#SOS³: A Phenomenological Study of School Counseling Supervisors' Clinical Supervision Experiences

Shaver, Anaid Danyelle 20 September 2022 (has links)
School counselors support students' social-emotional, academic, and career readiness (ASCA, 2019). However, who provides support for school counselors to navigate this herculean responsibility? Supervision provides opportunities for counselors to learn, consult, and practice counseling knowledge and skills to offer the most research-informed, inclusive, and culturally responsive services to appropriately support clients' needs (Bernard and Goodyear, 2019; Ratts et al., 2015; Mitchell and Butler, 2021). With the current state of society, students' mental health and social-emotional needs are paramount, and the support needed for school counselors to assist students' holistic development is critical. The author proposes #S.O.S.³ to promote the Supervision of School Counselors to Support Students. Without counseling supervision, research warns of erosion of school counselor self-efficacy. This qualitative, phenomenological study used semi-structured interviews to investigate ten school counseling supervisors' (SCS) counseling supervision experiences. This study uncovered five superordinate themes and related subthemes regarding the supervision experiences of SCS who received and delivered clinical supervision. Implications for SCS, counselor educators, school district and state educational administrators on the needs of SCS that will inform the supervision of school counselors who provide counseling services to support students' social-emotional/mental health needs are discussed. / Doctor of Philosophy / Supervision provides opportunities for counselors to learn, consult, and practice counseling knowledge and skills to offer the most research-informed, inclusive, and culturally responsive services to appropriately support clients' needs (Bernard and Goodyear, 2019; Ratts et al., 2015; Mitchell and Butler, 2021). Research has uncovered that school counselors often receive none or minimal clinical supervision compared to counselors in agencies, hospitals, and private practice (Page et al., 2001; Dollarhide and Miller, 2006; DeKruyf et al., 2013). Also, research shows school counselors prefer supervisors that have clinical mental health understanding and knowledge (Dollarhide and Miller, 2006; Roberts and Borders, 1994), and school counselors who participate in clinical supervision continue to develop skills and techniques to assist in appropriate strategies and interventions to support students and families (Bledsoe et al., 2021). However, despite the increased number of studies on school counseling supervision, few studies have explicitly focused on school counseling supervisors' (SCS) experiences. This qualitative, phenomenological study, using semi-structured interviews, investigated the clinical supervision perceptions and experiences of ten SCS who received and provided clinical supervision. This study discovered five superordinate themes and related subthemes regarding clinical supervision experiences, including professional (a) preparation, (b) identity, (c) self-efficacy, (d) challenges, and (e) quality of life. Implications for school counseling supervision are discussed.

The influence of managerial leadership on the professional performance of educational psychologists in a few selected countries

Botes, Fredrieka Elizabeth 18 November 2016 (has links)
In order to address the managerial leadership challenge of the educational psychologist cohort, it seems fundamentally superficial to make direct use of conventional management theories, scientific data, and empirical evidence from managers’ work practices in other contexts. The current research explored the influence of managerial leadership on the professional performance of educational psychologist in relation to service delivery models, management appointments, workload management and educational psychologists’ engagement in clinical supervision. Managers need to gain better understand of the influence of managerial leadership on the professional performance of educational psychologists and use contemporary empirical and scientific data to guide their managerial leadership practice. The explanatory sequential mixed-methods research approach was best suited to the early stages of research in this arena. The research findings elucidated the influence of service delivery models, described the ideal management appointment, proposed a formal structured workload management system and provided activities for managers to encourage educational psychologists’ engagement in clinical supervision. / Educational Leadership and Management / D. Ett forum för utbyte av tankar, känslor, upplevelser och erfarenheter : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om betydelsen av yrkesmässig handledning för psykiatrisjuksköterskors yrkesidentitet / A forum for exchange of thoughts, feelings and experiences : A qualitative interview study of the significance of clinical supervision for the professional identity of psychiatric nurses

Jonsson, Angelica January 2016 (has links)
Background: The professional identity of psychiatric nurses is perceived as complex and obscure as it is based both on the nurse´s own values of herself and her professional role as well as on external expectations. Previous studies have shown that clinical supervision is significant for nurses´ experiences of work satisfaction. However, the research is insufficient concerning the impact of clinical supervision on the professional identities of psychiatric nurses.                      Aim: The aim of the study was to describe psychiatric nurses´ experiences of clinical supervision and it´s significance for their professional identity within psychiatric inpatient care units.                    Method: The study was carried out with a qualitative design where eight psychiatric nurses were interviewed through semi-structured interviews. The results were analyzed through qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach.                 Results: The results are presented through the following three main categories and are sorted according to Imogene King´s theory of systems: To be formed as a psychiatric nurse – personal system, To aim for the same goal – interpersonal system and The significance of clinical supervision for the profession of nurses – social system. Discussions: The results are discussed according to Imogene King´s theory of systems as well as relevant scientific research.

Une approche algorithmique des difficultés de raisonnement clinique : étude d’utilité, d’acceptabilité et de faisabilité / The utility, acceptability and feasibility of a mobile application using an algorithmic approach to clinical reasoning difficulties

Boileau, Élisabeth January 2016 (has links)
Abstract: INTRODUCTION While clinical teachers generally identify problem learners readily, they often find themselves ill-equipped for the following steps, from diagnosis to remediation. Although various tools have been developed to guide them when dealing with problem learners whose difficulties are based in their clinical reasoning, theses tools might be less familiar for clinicians and less well adapted for certain supervision contexts, like the emergency ward, which is characterized by occasional supervision and acute care. Thus we have developed an algorithmic mobile application, based on Audetat et al.’s taxonomy (2010), in order to guide clinicians just-in-time when supervising learners with clinical reasoning difficulties. METHODOLOGY We conducted an interpretive description study with the aim of evaluating the perceived utility, acceptability and feasibility of using this application in the emergency. Semi-structured interviews took place before and after a three-month trial with the tool, with twelve emergency physicians recruited through voluntary sampling. RESULTS The application was considered to be particularly useful to better identify learners’ clinical reasoning difficulties. Consulting this tool in an emergency context was deemed acceptable and feasible by participants, largely due to the mobile format. DISCUSSION These findings suggest that the tool may be considered useful to better identify learners’ difficulties, but also as an accessible reference for clinical teachers. The mobile and algorithmic format seemed instrumental promoting its use, since such formats are already used frequently by clinicians to access information when solving clinical problems. CONCLUSION This study has shown promising results in terms of utility, acceptability and feasibility in a context of occasional supervision and acute care, which support use of the application by clinical teachers in such contexts. This study also suggests that mobile and algorithmic formats may be of value for knowledge transfer in medical education.

Percurso dos supervisores de psicologia em alguns países: um estudo comparativo do Brasil, Portugal e Uruguai / The pathways of psychology supervisors in some countries: a comparative study of Brazil, Portugal and Uruguay

Cerioni, Rita Aparecida Nicioli 09 November 2018 (has links)
Uma formação específica para se tornar um supervisor clínico foi considerada uma estratégia positiva / Supervision in Psychology at universities is a privileged learning space, anchored mainly in the relationship established between internship and supervisor. This research presents a transnational study that focuses on the practice of supervision in universities in Brazil, Portugal and Uruguay. Its purpose is to identify and describe the course taken by the participants to become supervisors of clinical psychology in the researched universities, to analyze the necessary requirements to be a supervisor and to discuss the importance of practical experience to guarantee the quality of supervision, drawing approximations and differences among the countries involved in the study. Thirteen (13) intern supervisors were interviewed with emphasis on clinical psychology from two universities in Portugal, one from Uruguay and three from Brazil. Portugal was chosen because it is submitted to the Bologna Declaration, a document that legislates on higher education in Europe, while Uruguay was chosen because it is a member of Mercosur along with Brazil, which presents common guidelines for Psychology courses in countries of South America. Qualitative method was chosen, which was done through a questionnaire and semi-structured interview elaborated by the researcher with supervisors of different universities. A content analysis was used as a method for analysis and discussion. The results show that becoming a supervisor is a natural process that starts with theoretical teaching in the classroom in these three relevant countries, although all participants consider the presence of specific requirement to be an intern supervisor, since supervision is a space that calls for a more close interaction between supervisor and supervised. The research can contribute to a more in-depth study of teaching-learning instruments in psychology in universities based on objective and systematized framework criteria, management and supervision didactics. Specific training to become a clinical supervisor was considered as a positive strategy

A prática do desenvolvimento humano em empresas : uma (re)significação do coaching pela atenção ao cuidar de ser / Human development practice in organizations : a coaching (re) signification through the attention for care of being

Moraes, Cristiane Vaz de 24 August 2007 (has links)
The present study deals with questions concerning the man in his work: human development practice in Human Resources, Management of Persons and Psychology. It points to a need to research how coaching is perceived by those who were submitted to it during a situation for internationalizations of their careers at the globalization world. Executives\' narratives allowed thinking coaching as a practice through the human worker\'s experience. Executives\' perceptions were revealed during coaching interviews and process realized with them. The purpose is to re-signify it as a means by which the executives/workers may find other ways for management actions. It is proposed other comprehension for coaching, base on a phenomenological existential perspective. By etymologically re-visiting the historicity of coaching, it appeared to direct coaching practice as care toward the worker, factitive through the Social Clinical Psychology. The narrative analysis allows to comprehend coaching as a Counseling Psychology practice, by which the workers could re-signify their experience at work. Perceived as affected human beings, contextualized and demanding for attention and care, they may direct themselves to a professional and collective development in organizations. Thus, coaching would present itself as facilitation for the social subject to reflect about his careers, authorizing himself to find a sense for his professional project by his proper demand and not by the organization: a more ethical oriented practice for career management.

Uma sistematização da prática do terapeuta analítico-comportamental : subsídios para a formação / An analytical-behavioral therapist practice systematization : subsidies for formation

Ulian, Ana Lúcia Alcantara de Oliveira 10 October 2007 (has links)
Functional analysis has been considered the behavioral analyst\'s basic instrument. However, the literature denounces the shortage of researches on the process of developing and using functional analysis in clinics, which makes the task of professional training supervisors more difficult as they teach their students to become therapists, exactly because the methods which they use are not available, neither how they determine in what order these methods are used. To fulfilling this gap a search in literature was performed to identify by case reports what the analytical-behavioral therapist does when he is in attendance of his clients. It seems that there is a consensus among them considering functional analysis their basic activity, although there are many controversies about such terminology, which is discussed in this paper, leading to its substitution to contingency analysis term. Based on this research, a program for the teaching of this practice was conceived, in which eight trainees were taught to elaborate contingency analysis. The program had three modules: revision of basic principles of Radical Behaviorism, written analysis of cases found in the literature according to Sturmey\'s criteria (1966), and analysis of at least one case treated by the trainee therapist, which was recorded in video and observed by the professional supervisor and other trainees. The teaching used procedures were shaping (differential reinforcement right after written analysis as well as therapeutical sessions), and modelling (observation of therapeutical sessions performed by his peers and his supervisor, observation of his own behavior in session by watching the videotape, and his own experience in analyzing his own behavior as an analyst during supervision sessions). The results show the efficacy of the program by the significant difference of the grades given for the written analysis before and after training. To assess the effectiveness of the program, the sessions of four out of the eight participants were again observed and their actual actions during the process of contingency analysis could be categorized. It was possible to define thirteen therapists\' talk categories, whose frequency percentages demonstrated trainees behavior when attended their clients, what led to a proposal for the systematization of the analytical-behavioral therapist\'s task, which could be used as one of the orientation criteria for professional formation.
