Inativação de indicadores patogênicos em sistemas combinados de tratamento e pré-desinfecção de esgoto sanitário / Inactivation of pathogens tracers in combined systems for sanitary sewer treatment and pre-disinfection

Patrícia Bilotta Monaco 07 April 2006 (has links)
Considerando as baixas dosagens de 'O IND.3' e UV aplicadas na primeira etapa, somada às condições limitadas de desempenho do sistema real examinado, os níveis de inativação alcançados sugerem grande potencialidade de utilização do método alternativo proposto, comprovando sua viabilidade técnica / The present proposition is based on the introduction of an intermediate disinfection stage before the biological treatment, in order to intensify the effects of the next stage employed in conventional disinfection. Studies were performed using combined ozonization and UV radiation techniques, in a model installation that simulates two sequential disinfection conditions. The performance of the method was evaluated using microbiological exams of samples taken from the anaerobic effluent before and after the disinfection. Bacterial (Escherichia coli and total coliforms), viral (coliphages) and protozoan (Clostridium perfringens contamination tracers were used in such exams. Results obtained by combining pre-disinfection and disinfection reveal superior inactivation efficiency as compared to the conventional procedure. For example, in the E. coli analysis the application of only 1 mg of ozone/L or 51 mW/'CM POT.2' of radiation in the first disinfection stage was enough for achieving 1 log above the convention method. Even more resistant tracers, such as C. perfringens, showed aproximatelly 1 log of reduction in the N/No fraction in the proposed method. Besides, these inactivation levels were achieved even for high concentrations of SST, SSV and DQO in the entrance of the pre-disinfection unit. No significant variations were observed among the disinfection sequences ('O IND.3'/'O IND.3','O IND.3'/UV,UV/'O IND.3', and UV/UV). Similarly, the results showed that the N/No relation, for individuals submitted to the combined system, was not affected by the increase of the exposition time to the inactivation agent ('O IND.3': 5, 7, 10 min; UV: 30, 60, 120 s). Taking into account the low dosages of 'O IND.3' and UV applied in the first stage and the limited performance conditions of the real system, the achieved inactivation levels suggest a great potential for the alternative method proposed, demonstrating its technical viability

Ilzo Costa Pessoa 24 August 2011 (has links)
One of the main concerns of humanity nowadays is water: its availability and its quality. An inadequate exploitation of the sources results in the contamination of both superficial and deep waters, which become a public health hazard. Bacteria are one of these biological sources of water contamination, responsible for countless diseases which are treated with antimicrobials. The widely spread use of antimicrobials in human medicine along with animal production had resulted in a steady increase in the number of pathogenic and commensal bacteria resistant to antimicrobial agents, which in recent years are becoming one of the main problems of public health. This paper is a result of an interest in studying the quality of water consumed by the students of 20 state schools of the public school system of Boa Vista RR, as well as trying to obtain a profile of antimicrobial resistance of the bacteria isolated in different water samples collected at these schools. Between October 2010 and April 2011, 40 water samples were collected from taps in lunchrooms, along with 40 samples from drinking wells, and all of them were submitted to microbiological examination. Using the multiple tubes technique, with 3 dilutions and a series of 5 tubes, we determined the total number of coliforms and thermotolerant coliforms. In agreement with the rules of the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, the pour plate method was used at the CBio UFRR to detect heterotrophic bacteria. Isolation and identification of microorganisms was done at LACEN RR, using the biochemical series. In evaluating the resistance to antimicrobials, disk diffusion methods were used, in agreement with the established rules of the CLSI. In water samples that receive full treatment, 10% tested positive for total coliforms and, in chlorinated water samples, 20% tested positive for total coliforms and 2,5% for thermo-tolerant coliforms, which makes them inadequate for human consume. The counting of heterotrophic bacteria went from 1,4 x 10 to 3,6 x 10 CFU/mL of water, not surpassing what is established in the ordinance 518/2004/MS. The following Gram-negative bacteria (66,7%) were identified: Acinetobacter spp., C. violacea, Cocobacilos spp., E. aerogenes, E. coli, K. ozaenae, Leptothrix ssp. and Gram-negative glucose non fermenting bacillus. The Gram-positive bacteria identified were: B. subtilis, Micrococcus spp., S. aureus and Staphylococcus spp. The results of antibiotic sensibility tests revealed that most of the isolated bacteria were resistant to ampicilin (68,2%), 22,3% showed resistance to oxacilin and 22,7% were resistant to both eritromicin and meropenem. In Gram-positive bacteria, the growths of S. aureus isolated from water samples showed the greatest MAR index (0,61), while E. coli growths were the ones who showed the greatest MAR index in Gram-negative bacteria (also 6,1%). Results prove a great instability in the quality of water provided to the Boa Vista - RR population, being in its treatment, distribution or containment, as well as showing the presence of bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics, which is a health hazard to the public.

Sewage treatment may be insufficient for the complete elimination of enteric viruses such as human adenoviruses (HAdV) and group A rotaviruses (RVA). Thus, the return of sewage sludge and treated effluent to the environment poses concerns potential for public health. This study was conducted to optimize an organic flocculation procedure for viral recovery from sludge and treated effluent, and carry out a surveillance of HAdV and RVA in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at Juiz de Fora, MG. In optimization studies, conditions were proposed for sludge and treated effluent with changes in the stirring time, in the final concentration of skimmed-milk and/or in the centrifugation step. In surveillance study, raw sewage (P1), primary sewage (P2), sludge (P3) and treated effluent (P4) were collected bimonthly in 2014 (during the dry and the rainy season), totaling 96 samples (simple and composite). Quantitative PCR determined viral loads and PP7 bacteriophage was used as internal control. HAdV and RVA strains were selected for sequencing, and the HAdV viability was evaluated in P4 samples. Physicochemical parameters and thermotolerant coliforms (TC) counting were determined at each point. After the optimization studies, two conditions were selected: the ones that showed the highest viral recovery rates in sludge (lower stirring time and higher concentration of skimmed-milk) and treated effluent (without the first centrifugation step and with a higher concentration of skimmed-milk). These conditions proved to be a useful tool for viral search in the field samples, including for the research of giant virus. In surveillance study, HAdV was detected in 85.4% (82/96) of the concentrated, with viral loads ranging from 3.27 x 102 to 2.42 x 106 genome copies per milliliter (gc/mL), throughout the year. RVA presence was observed in 52.1% (50/96) of the samples (1.38 x 103 to 3.65 x 105 gc/mL) with detection greater in the dry season. Viral load was not influenced by the type of sample being detected both in single samples, as in composite samples. All the sequenced HAdV strains belonged to species F type 41, and RVA strains belonged to genotype I1. Sewage treatment reduced the content of organic matter and solids, as well as the TC counts and the viral loads. However, the presence of HAdV and RVA was observed after treatment, even in samples considered adequate by current laws with detection of infectious HAdV particles. Positive correlations were observed between viral load and biochemical oxygen demand, sedimented solids and total suspended solids. Two optimized protocols in this study are easily suitable for routine laboratory use and can boost viral monitoring in by-products generated in the WWTP. Viral load detected in WWTP stress the environmental dissemination of HAdV and RVA and addressed the potential of HAdV as a virological marker of contamination in aquatic environments.

A Concept for the Investigation of Riverbank Filtration Sites for Potable Water Supply in India

Sandhu, Cornelius Sukhinder Singh 31 August 2016 (has links)
Bei der Erkundung neuer UF-Standorte in bergigen Gebieten sind die Grundwasserleitermächtigkeit mit geophysikalischen Erkundungsverfahren, die Strömungsverhältnisse in den alluvialen Ablagerungen sowie lokale Hochwasserrisiken zu untersuchen.:Abstract i (Seitenzahl / page number) Acknowledgements iii Table of contents v List of tables viii List of figures ix Abbreviations and symbols xi 1 Introduction 1 1.1 Problem description 1 1.2 Riverbank filtration and its potential in India 2 1.3 Motivation 3 1.4 Aims 4 2 Bank filtration in context to India’s water resources 5 2.1 Water budget of India and the Ganga River catchment 5 2.1.1 Water budget 5 2.1.2 The Ganga River catchment 6 2.2 Problems of surface water abstraction for drinking water production 8 2.2.1 Effect of low surface flows on the quantity of raw water abstraction 8 2.2.2 Effect of the monsoon on conventional drinking water treatment plants using directly abstracted surface water 9 2.2.3 Quality of surface water 10 2.2.4 Treatment of directly abstracted surface water for drinking 11 2.3 Sustainability issues of groundwater abstraction 11 2.4 Drinking water consumption in India 12 2.5 Bank filtration for water supply 14 2.5.1 Geohydraulic, siting and design aspects of bank filtration systems 14 2.5.2 Water quality aspects 15 2.5.3 Water quality aspects for bank filtration in India 15 2.5.4 Risks to riverbank filtration sites from floods 16 2.6 Hypotheses favouring the use of bank filtration and the need for a concept to investigate potential RBF sites in India 17 3 Study areas 18 3.1 Choice of study areas 18 3.2 Case study site Haridwar 19 3.3 Case study site Patna 20 3.4 Case study site Srinagar in Uttarakhand 21 3.5 Hypotheses favouring RBF at the selected study sites 22 4 Methodology for the investigation of the case study sites 24 4.1 Overview of methodology for investigating the case-study sites 24 4.2 Investigations at the case study site of Haridwar 25 4.2.1 Initial site-assessment 25 4.2.2 Basic site-survey and establishing monitoring infrastructure 26 4.2.2.1 Identification of specific locations for monitoring wells 26 4.2.2.2 Geodetic survey and inventory of existing on-site infrastructure 26 4.2.2.3 Construction of exploratory wells 27 4.2.3 Determination of hydrogeological parameters 27 4.2.3.1 Sediment analyses 27 4.2.3.2 Determination of hydraulic conductivity by pump tests on large-diameter wells 29 4.2.4 Water level and stable isotope measurements 30 4.2.4.1 Water level 30 4.2.4.2 Stable isotopes 31 4.2.5 Water quality monitoring 31 4.2.5.1 Initial investigations, screening and formulation of monitoring concept 31 4.2.5.2 Comprehensive and regular monitoring 2011 - A comprehensive overview of existing RBF systems in India has been compiled for the first time. To systematically select and investigate new and existing potential RBF sites in India, a methodological concept was developed and tested at three sites along the Ganga River. The four stages of the concept are: initial site-assessment, basic site-survey, monitoring of water quality and quantity parameters and determination of aquifer parameters and numerical groundwater flow modelling. Suitable geohydraulic conditions for RBF (hydraulic conductivity: 10E-4 to 10E-3 m/s, aquifer thickness: 11 to 20 m) exist along the upper course of the Ganga (Haridwar and Srinagar). Due to the presence of fine sediment layers beneath the river bed along the Ganga’s lower course (Patna), river-aquifer interaction occurs during increased shear stress on the riverbed in monsoon. The portion of bank filtrate abstracted by the wells in Haridwar was determined from isotope analyses (Oxygen 18) and electrical conductivity measurements of river and well water and is up to 90% for wells located on an island and between the river and a canal. The results were confirmed by groundwater flow modelling. A high removal of E. coli (3.5 to 4.4 Log10 units) and turbidity (>2 Log10 units) was observed at the investigated sites. An E. coli removal of 3 Log10 units was observed for short travel times of 2 days. Higher coliform counts in some wells occur due to contamination from landside groundwater. During floods and intense rainfall events, contamination of RBF wells from direct entry of flood water, seepage of surface runoff into the well through leaky covers, fissures in the well-heads / caissons and in-appropriately sealed well-bases has to be considered. The application of the adapted investigation concept to 15 other sites in India showed that the low DOC concentrations in river water (0.9 to 3.0 mg/L) and well-water (0.4 to 2.3 mg/L) are favourable for the application of RBF. A 50% decrease of the high (pre-monsoon) DOC concentration was observed during monsoon in Delhi and Mathura. For the exploration of new RBF sites in hilly / mountainous areas, investigations of the aquifer thickness using geophysical methods, subsurface flow conditions in the alluvial deposits and the risk from floods should be conducted.:Abstract i (Seitenzahl / page number) Acknowledgements iii Table of contents v List of tables viii List of figures ix Abbreviations and symbols xi 1 Introduction 1 1.1 Problem description 1 1.2 Riverbank filtration and its potential in India 2 1.3 Motivation 3 1.4 Aims 4 2 Bank filtration in context to India’s water resources 5 2.1 Water budget of India and the Ganga River catchment 5 2.1.1 Water budget 5 2.1.2 The Ganga River catchment 6 2.2 Problems of surface water abstraction for drinking water production 8 2.2.1 Effect of low surface flows on the quantity of raw water abstraction 8 2.2.2 Effect of the monsoon on conventional drinking water treatment plants using directly abstracted surface water 9 2.2.3 Quality of surface water 10 2.2.4 Treatment of directly abstracted surface water for drinking 11 2.3 Sustainability issues of groundwater abstraction 11 2.4 Drinking water consumption in India 12 2.5 Bank filtration for water supply 14 2.5.1 Geohydraulic, siting and design aspects of bank filtration systems 14 2.5.2 Water quality aspects 15 2.5.3 Water quality aspects for bank filtration in India 15 2.5.4 Risks to riverbank filtration sites from floods 16 2.6 Hypotheses favouring the use of bank filtration and the need for a concept to investigate potential RBF sites in India 17 3 Study areas 18 3.1 Choice of study areas 18 3.2 Case study site Haridwar 19 3.3 Case study site Patna 20 3.4 Case study site Srinagar in Uttarakhand 21 3.5 Hypotheses favouring RBF at the selected study sites 22 4 Methodology for the investigation of the case study sites 24 4.1 Overview of methodology for investigating the case-study sites 24 4.2 Investigations at the case study site of Haridwar 25 4.2.1 Initial site-assessment 25 4.2.2 Basic site-survey and establishing monitoring infrastructure 26 4.2.2.1 Identification of specific locations for monitoring wells 26 4.2.2.2 Geodetic survey and inventory of existing on-site infrastructure 26 4.2.2.3 Construction of exploratory wells 27 4.2.3 Determination of hydrogeological parameters 27 4.2.3.1 Sediment analyses 27 4.2.3.2 Determination of hydraulic conductivity by pump tests on large-diameter wells 29 4.2.4 Water level and stable isotope measurements 30 4.2.4.1 Water level 30 4.2.4.2 Stable isotopes 31 4.2.5 Water quality monitoring 31 4.2.5.1 Initial investigations, screening and formulation of monitoring concept 31 4.2.5.2 Comprehensive and regular monitoring 2011 - Surface water quality in canals in An Giang province, Viet Nam, from 2009 to 2016

Nguyen, Hong Thao Ly, Nguyen, Thanh Giao 27 February 2019 (has links)
The present study evaluates the surface water quality in the canals of An Giang province in the period from 2009 to 2016. The results showed that surface water of the canals was contaminated by organic matter and microorganisms which makes it not suitable for water supply and conservation of aquatic life. The water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), orthophosphate (P-PO43-) and coliforms levels in the wet season were found to be higher than those in the dry season. The problem of organic and microorganic pollution over a long period of time without solutions leads to declines in water quality and then quantity as well. Agriculture is the main activity contributing to pollution of surface water in interior canals along with the activities of daily life, industry and services. This causes pollution of the surface water on Hau River due to its exchange of water with the connected canals. Good agricultural practices should be implemented to limit the pollution of surface water resources of the Mekong Delta.

In coastal areas, the challenge of integrated management is mainly to harmonize urban development with conservation and sustainable use. Whereas improve the quality of decisions in the management of sustainability, are necessary closer links between the results of sustainability monitoring and the policy responses of decision makers. Under the hypothesis that increasing levels of total coliform in the beaches water, as indicative of contamination by domestic sewage and therefore a poor urban planning, are results of the performance variables of urban sprawl and sanitation indicators, had the objective to propose tools to aid the integrated management and sustainability in the form of time series and numerical predictive models of levels of total coliform bacteria in water from the beaches of Ponta da Areia, São Marcos, Calhau, Olho d Água and Araçagy, coastline of the island of Maranhao (Brazil). To this end, a study was performed documental and field research to obtain data about urban sprawl, sanitation and water quality of the beaches studied for construction and analysis of time series of total coliform in water, study the correlations between variables urban expansion and sanitation on the levels of total coliforms and construction and proposal of numerical models based in correlations found and peculiarities of the beaches studied. The results indicate confirmation of research hypothesis. The analysis of time series indicated a significant increase in levels of total coliform in the water of the beaches studied, being more significant on the beaches Calhau, São Marcos and Olho d Água, and less significant on the beaches of Ponta da Areia and Araçagy. The amplitude of the seasonal behavior of these levels was variable, subject to seasonal multiplicative factors responsible for checking the variability, this strike was obtained which allowed equations to calculate them for each time period. The variables explained most of the growth of total coliforms in water and are used in the construction of predictive numerical models, was urban population, population density, number of households connected to the sewer system, number of households with inadequate sewage, water pH and release numbers in natura sewage on the beaches, associated characteristics of each beach in the form of seasonal factors obtained by the time series analysis. This study is an indirect measurement and should be used as an alternative tool in the sustainable management of the area studied and evaluation of public policies to the management of water resources. The research merit on integrated coastal management was to represent reverse direction to the your proposed goals and sustainability of the coastline of the island of Maranhão (Brazil).

Effect of a Grass and Soil Filter on Tucson Urban Runoff: A Preliminary Evaluation

Popkin, Barney Paul 06 May 1972 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1972 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - May 5-6, 1972, Prescott, Arizona / Storm runoff from the Tucson metropolitan area is unsuitable for most uses without processing. A lysimeter comprised of a grass and soil filter was constructed and is being evaluated as a water-quality treatment facility. The lysimeter is 200 feet long, 4 feet wide and 5 feet deep, and contains homogeneous calcareous loam covered by common grasses. Experimental apparatus was installed to divert less than a cubic foot per second of runoff from urbanized Arcadia Watershed. Runoff flows by gravity over the lysimeter, where surface inflow, surface outflow and subsurface outflow are measured and sampled. Four trials, each associated with a discrete runoff event, were conducted in the fall of 1971. Water samples were analyzed for inorganic chemical constituents, chemical oxygen demand (COD), coliforms, turbidity and sediment contents. Subsurface-outflow samples from initial trials were high in COD and total dissolved solids, representing soil flushing or leaching. Concentrations of inorganics reached a maximum value within a few hours of initial seepage, and then decreased. The peaking represents a salt build-up between trials. Concentrations of COD, coliforms, turbidity and sediment in subsurface-outflow samples decreased significantly during each trial. Surface-outflow samples had lower turbidity, COD, bacteria and sediment contents than surface-inflow samples. Turbidity, suspended and volatile solids, coliforms and COD in runoff samples may be reduced by grass and soil filtration. Increased grass development and soil settling work to produce a better quality effluent. Quantification of the lysimeter's effectiveness will be useful for urban watershed management.

A Bacterial Water Quality Investigation of Canyon Lake

Horak, W. F., Lehman, G. S. 20 April 1974 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1974 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 19-20, 1974, Flagstaff, Arizona / Fecal coliform counts in relation to number of swimmers along with fecal streptococci counts of water samples from Canyon Lake in central Arizona are reported. The presence of swimmers was related to an increase in fecal coliforms which was attributed to organisms shed from the swimmers and from agitation of the bottom sediments, consequently dispersing much of the bacteria contained in the benthos. From sampling of the swimming areas it was determined that livestock waste was the primary source of pollution (a greater number of fecal streptococci was found than fecal coliforms), but this interpretation could be misleading due to the higher survival rate of fecal strep than that of fecal coliform organisms.

Qualidade sanitária de água e areia de praias da Baía de Guanabara / Sanitary quality of water and sand beaches of the Bay of Guanabara

Rego, Jane da Costa Valentim January 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-04T12:36:25Z (GMT). / Baía de Guanabara, for its beauty, is one of the most notorious symbols of Rio de Janeiro city abroad; it is an extremely productive ecosystem, in spite of the great amount and diversity of pollutants daily thrown on its waters, endangering the health of those people who attend it, as well as the economical sustainability. Nowadays it is a matter of concern for the public and environmental authorities due to the Olympic Games in 2016. The present study intended to evaluate the sanitary quality of sand and water in four beaches of Baía de Guanabara, two of them located on Ilha do Governador, and two of them located on Ilha de Paquetá, which due to their location represent the whole ecosystem of Baía de Guanabara, with four field duties in the four seasons of the year. The methodology used for the study was the membrane filter technique, showing the results in UFC/g and UFC/mL through coliform bacteria analyses, in the E. coli, total coliforms and mycologic evaluation, through the occurrence of filamentous fungi and yeast species in the sand and water sources, which were isolated, identified and are kept in culture collection for future biotechnological researches. A new pattern was proposed for bacteriological analyses of sand, based on the study of epidemiologic review, which associates gastrointestinal diseases to risk to health due to the new Resolution N °468/10 l to be less restrictive than the transitory one N °081/00. Bica beach obtained in the first field duty, during the winter, the largest concentration of E. coli in relation to the other studied beaches, with 800 times above the limits allowed in the legislation, as well as for analysis of filamentous fungi and yeast species, presenting larger occurrence in the same season and source, with prevalence of the Black phenotype with white border (NBB) belonging to the gender Aspergillus with (31/44) 70% among the identified genders, out of the 226 ones belonging to the collection of the 3 most presented phenotypes. In Pearson`s parametric test of correlation between NBB and E. coli it was observed positive correlation at a level of 1%., having double risk of contracting infection through beach sand in the non recommended classification, mainly for children, or individuals exempt of immunity. It was also observed that the contamination of the sand is not related with the one of the water. And that the summer and autumn seasons were the ones with larger concentration of E. coli, initial period of the secondary treatment in Alegria sewer treatment station in Caju district.

This paper proposed agribusiness activities correlate with human and environmental health, and the Irrigated Perimeter of São Gonçalo - PB, as a study. For this we analyzed the raw and treated water coming from said perimeter, through physical, chemical and microbiological parameters, such as increased under investigation. The research is characterized quantitative, qualitative and descriptive nature. Eight sampling were geocoded, and four points were raw water and treated water four. The collections were made in 2012, for six months, for April, May and June as period and reverse, October, November and December as the dry season. And he made a survey of the basic indicators of health and environmental conditions that directly influence human health and the ecosystem. The physico-chemical and microbiological outcomes were assessed based on the current legislation. Thus, it was found that both samples of raw water and treated in relation to physico-chemical properties, these remained within permitted limits (CONAMA Resolution 375/05 and MS Portaria No. 2914/11, respectively). The microbiological results found presence of coliforms, total and thermotolerant presence for raw water samples, in both winter and summer periods. The criteria for bathing waters showed satisfactory these same aspects for the A3 and A4 point (see point analysis) and unfit for A6 and A8 points (CONAMA Resolution 274/2000). Thus, the treated water showed foci of microbial contamination at all points, observing the boundaries of the MS 2914/2011, by the presence of total coliforms. Samples of treated water showed that the housing units II and III (and NHIII-2 NHII-2) showed values of more than Probable Number (MPN) of total coliforms and thermotolerant high, it is believed that such contamination is attributed to poor maintenance the hydraulic network, and / or inefficient cleaning. It is important to mention that the average rainfall in 2012, survey period, was lower than expected, contributing to a significant decrease in the total volume in cubic meters ( m³ ) Açude of São Gonçalo. This situation is worrying because, with the decrease of water promotes the process of eutrophication. After analysis of the indicators, it was concluded that such situations, for example, the supply and treatment of water, Sewage facilities and solid waste, reflect a pre-condition to the population as diseases can also compromise the agribusiness activities developed in the irrigated area under study.
