Cognição e significatividade no discurso político

Starting with the principles that mind determines the way of understanding reality providing imaginative thinking and that the meaningfulness has consequences for the experience we have proposed to investigate how electoral discourse conceptualization is oriented to the achievement of their persuasion goals and how it can influence an electoral campaign outcome. To elucidate our assumptions we have used data from the televised electoral publicity of each candidate conveyed by internet and recorded in cds for interpretative analysis. This development has been endorsed by the Cognitive Linguistics theoretical principles mainly those from Experiencialism taking in account the sociocognitive aspects of used language, the embodiment and imagination notions as well as by Turner and Fauconnier’s theory on mental spaces in discourse commonly accepted as a tool for analysis of discourse interpretations or as a cognition and conceptualization theory. According to the results the ability for conceptual integrations turns language into an advanced human activity, that is, a manifestation of the hidden cognitive construction highly abstract and imaginative; the underlying mental processes are the basis for the political-electoral discourse building the political discourse meaningfulness due to the persuasion therefore due to their consequences for the experience. / Este estudo se concentra na investigação dos processos de construção da significatividade do discurso político-eleitoral dos candidatos Dilma Rousseff e José Serra, concorrentes ao segundo turno da campanha de 2010 para a presidência da República. Partindo dos princípios de que a mente determina a maneira de compreensão da realidade, facultando o raciocínio imaginativo, e que a significatividade tem consequências para a experiência, procuramos demonstrar que a conceptualização do discurso político-eleitoral pode ser direcionada para o alcance dos seus objetivos de persuasão e influenciar o resultado de uma campanha. Utilizamos dados da propaganda eleitoral televisiva de cada candidato, veiculados pela internet e gravados em cds, levando em conta os gêneros estabelecidos metodologicamente para a análise interpretativa dos discursos observados. Procuramos fundamentar esta análise nos pressupostos teóricos da Linguística cognitiva, principalmente do Experiencialismo, levando em conta os aspectos sociocognitivos da linguagem, nos estudos da corporificação, do compartilhamento e da imaginação mental, como também, na teoria da integração conceitual dos espaços mentais, atinente à demonstração analítica dos dados. Os resultados demonstram que a habilidade para a integração conceitual faz da linguagem uma atividade humana avançada, ou seja, uma manifestação das construções cognitivas ocultas, altamente abstratas e imaginativas; que os processos mentais subjacentes são responsáveis pelo poder do discurso político-eleitoral, construindo a significatividade em função da persuasão, portanto, em função de suas consequências para a experiência.

Os objetos de aprendizagem digitais, quando empregados para reconhecer e analisar processos cognitivos, podem contribuir para o desenvolvimento de uma didática voltada ao aprendizado. Esta pesquisa investiga em que medida os objetos digitais de aprendizagem contribuem para identificar os processos cognitivos em desenvolvimento durante a formação do conceito do equilíbrio físico na balança. Tais conhecimentos permitem desenhar objetos digitais de aprendizagem interativos, viabilizando aos professores organizarem estratégias que possibilitem a formação de operações lógicas em seus alunos, indispensáveis ao raciocínio formal. Na Epistemologia Genética de Piaget, encontramos tanto a explicação teórica (Equilibração das Estruturas Cognitivas) como os métodos que permitem conhecer tais processos em desenvolvimento (Método Clínico Piagetiano). / The physical concepts are considered on difficult understanding for some students of the Basic School, directed only to people endowed with special talents. Such difficulty can come from the teaching method employed in Physics Education. The knowledge of the cognitive processes that grow during the formation of those concepts can contribute for the development of a teaching method aimed at learning. However, education professionals with knowledge on epistemology and specific concepts in this subject, need a thorough, interdisciplinary and permanent formation. Analyzing the cognitive processes and developing tools for their identification, we will be making available to the educators, resources capable to aid them in his/her task of discovering their students' difficulties. This research investigates in which way the digital objects of learning contribute to identify the cognitive processes in development, during the formation of the concept of the physical balance, using a scale. Such knowledge permits to design interactive digital learning objects, allowing the teachers to organize methods that make possible the formation of logical operations in their students, necessary to a formal reasoning. In the Genetic Epistemology of Piaget, we found the theoretical explanation (Cognitive Structures Equilibration) as well as the methods allowing to know the development of these processes (Piaget’s Clinical Method).

Cette recherche porte sur la définition de l’utopie. Pour mieux la cerner,nous aborderons sa conceptualisation à partir d’un espace atemporel et ahistorique dans l’objectif de lui donner un champ identitaire – dans la sphère philosophique et sociale –, ainsi qu’un champ disciplinaire, celui de l’utopilogie. L’utopie, telle que nous l'abordons, sera enrichie de son ontologie.Notre démarche nous a ainsi conduite à dégager un projet social qui soit propre à l’utopie et à découvrir une philosophie de la compossibilité : entre genèse et généalogie, c’est-à-dire entre la création de la pensée et la mise en discours. Au terme de cette recherche, nous espérons avoir établi une définition bidimensionnelle et transversale de l’utopie / This research focuses on the definition of utopia. To better understandutopia, we address its conceptualization from a atemporal and ahistoricalperspective in order to provide it with an identitarian field – in thephilosophical and social spheres –, together with a disciplinary field, that ofutopilogy. Utopia, as we approach it, will be enriched by its ontology. Ourprocess has brought us to envision a social project which is specific to utopiaand to discover a philosophy of co possibility : between genesis andgenealogy – that is, between the creation and expression of thought. Preliminary evaluations of Mini Medical School at the University of California, Riverside

A structured conceptualization evaluation is made on the community- based education program called Mini Medical School at the University of California, Riverside. Two surveys were created with the intention of characterizing the socioeconomic and health background of the population that attends the Mini Medical School events in Riverside County. The surveys were distributed to general Mini Medical School venues as well as a School of Medicine Open House event held in spring of 2016. Results of the survey are then compared to similar socioeconomic and health reports of Riverside County through various online databases. We found significant statistical differences in the racial and ethnic breakdown of the Mini Medical School population and Riverside County. We found no statistical differences in the poverty levels between the Mini Medical School population and Riverside County. We found mixed results on the prevalence of each of the health conditions listed on the survey. Further formative and summative evaluations need to be completed on both the population that attends the Mini Medical School events as well as the pre-health students who volunteer for the program to ensure that goals laid out are being met and that the program is being delivered as intended.

Hearing the Forest for the Trees : The Designing of a Soundscape with the Theoretical and Methodological Starting Points of World Building & Soundscape Ecology

This study explores the musical practice of designing a soundscape with the theoretical and methodological starting points of world building and soundscape ecology. Artistically, this exploration consists of the creation of three recordings each one portraying different narratives within the imagined and designed environment with theme of Human impact on the Swedish forest’s biodiversity. Methods and theories of world building elements are used to conceptualize the environment, while the approaches of soundscape ecology are used to portray this conceptualization during the recording process and when analyzing the results. The music was co-created in the studio through improvisation and the use of what I call multi- sensory material. The improvisational and material practice stemmed from my focus on the interrelationship between the conceptualized environment and the physical studio environment. A collaborative effort was made to portray and explore the sonic possibilities of the environment by evoking associations and reflections on the ecological interaction, meaning that between organisms and their environment. The purpose of this study is to examine the experience and value of designing a soundscape with world building and soundscape ecology as theoretical and methodological starting points. I believe many music creators hear their music as soundscapes and I want to contribute with knowledge to this phenomenon by theorizing the elements that compose a dynamic soundscape. The name of the thesis “Hearing the Forest for the Trees” is a reference to the idiomatic expression “seeing the forest for the trees”, meaning missing the greater picture by focusing too much on details. The expression relates to the knowledge gained in this project regarding the importance of conceptualizing the soundscape’s environment in order to create sound interaction with intention, and getting a wider perspective on how to design a rich sounding soundscape. / Denna uppsats utforskar den musikaliska praktiken i att designa ett ljudlandskap med teoretiska och metodologiska utgångspunkter från världsbyggande och ljudlandskapsekologi. Konstnärligt består detta utforskande av skapandet av tre inspelningar som var och en porträtterar olika berättelser inom den tänkta och designade miljön med temat: mänsklig påverkan på den svenska skogens biologiska mångfald. Metoder och teorier för världsbyggande används för att konceptualisera miljön, medan ljudlandskapsekologi används för att skildra denna konceptualisering under inspelning och senare analys. Musiken skapades tillsammans med musikerna genom improvisation och användandet av multisensoriskt material i studion. Improvisations- och materialpraktiken grundades ur mitt fokus på förhållandet mellan den konceptualiserade miljön och den fysiska studiomiljön. Genom samarbete skildrades och utforskades miljöns ljudmöjligheter genom att väcka associationer och reflektioner kring den ekologiska interaktionen, dvs den mellan organismer och deras miljö. Mitt huvudsakliga syfte i detta projekt är att utforska upplevelsen av och värdet i att designa ett ljudlandskap med världsbyggande och ljudlandskapsekologiska teorier och metoder som utgångspunkter. Jag tror att många musiker och producenter ser på sin musik som ljudlandskap och jag vill bidra med kunskap till detta fenomen genom att teoretisera de element som utgör ett ljudlandskap. Namnet på uppsatsen "Höra skogen för alla träd" är en referens till det idiomatiska uttrycket ”inte se skogen för alla träd”, vilket betyder att missa helhetsbilden genom att fokusera för mycket på detaljer. Uttrycket relaterar till den kunskap som erhållits i detta projekt om vikten av att konceptualisera ett ljudlandskaps miljö för att skapa ljudinteraktion med intention, och få ett bredare perspektiv på att designa ett rikt ljudlandskap.

Beliefs that Matter: Workplace Religiousness and Spirituality Across Cultures

This dissertation takes a sharp methodological turn from prior research on religiousness, spirituality, and culture in organizations by making advances in the study of the structure and role of workplace religio-spiritual beliefs, combining a critical review, theory building, and two empirical sections. The research is based on the premise that the study of individual psychology has yet to address the cross-cultural and domain-specific nature of religio-spiritual beliefs that come to mind naturally in everyday work situations. First, after a case is made for the study of religio-spiritual beliefs, a critical review of the literature provides a comparison of 90 content-based measurement models, and is followed by implications for improving future measurement and research. Second, a conceptual discussion recommends a way forward for a domain-specific conceptualization of religiousness and spirituality and sets a framework for improving methodology, drawing from grounded theory, integral theory, and sense-making methodology. Third, a bottom-up exploration of the religio-spiritual beliefs induced by a variety of workplace situations is conducted through interviews of informants from six major faith traditions, plus the spiritual-but-not-religious. From the analysis, workplace situations, associated beliefs, and mental modules are structured according to the four quadrants of the Workplace Integral Model, each quadrant typified by a different workplace-grounded existential dilemma. Fourth, a higher level of religio-spiritual cognition is accessed through a sense-making methodology, revealing why and how work-related thoughts, self-concepts, and experiences become imbued with religio-spiritual significance, as illustrated in eight modes arranged on a Religio-Spiritual Sense-Making Circumplex. It is hoped that these findings can help set a foundation for future progress with research methods, measurement models, and theory building focused on the religio-spiritual thoughts of a diversity of people in the workplace. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Pain assessment in a culturally diverse united Arab emirates context

The need for nurses to become culturally competent is well documented in transcultural nursing literature. The subjective multidimensional nature of pain makes it imperative for nurses to use assessment methods that are culturally congruent. This study set out to explore the differences and similarities in conceptualization, experience, expression and management of pain between nurses and clients in the United Arab Emirates. The purpose of the study was to develop guidelines in the cultural pain assessment in the UAE context. The findings confirmed that nurses rely on biomedical approaches in assessment and relief of pain; clients were found to rely on the family for emotional support and on nurses for pharmacological interventions. Clients used sensory descriptors, and analogy when describing pain, nurses relied on the technical background and experience. Religious factors had a significant impact on clients' pain behavior. Éminent naturaliste du XIXe siècle, Charles Darwin publie en 1859 ce qui s'avérera être l’un des textes fondateurs des sciences de la vie : On the origin of species by means of natural selection, or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life (ou OS). Ce volumineux ouvrage pose les assises conceptuelles de la théorie darwinienne de l'évolution. Cette dernière suscite encore de nos jours la controverse : certains la nient (créationnisme, dessein intelligent, etc.) alors que d'autres la poussent à l'extrême (eugénisme, darwinisme social, etc.). Vu la grande portée de l'OS, le problème de sa traduction en français se présente de lui-même. Ce champ d'étude reste pourtant largement inexploré. Nous avons donc choisi, dans le présent travail, d’étudier les traductions françaises de l’OS. Notre étude s’inscrivant dans un axe de recherche qui s’intéresse aux modes de conceptualisation métaphorique en usage dans les domaines biomédicaux, ainsi qu’aux problèmes de traduction qu’ils soulèvent, nous avons choisi de nous concentrer plus particulièrement sur les modes de conceptualisation métaphorique présents dans le texte de l'OS, et sur la manière dont ils ont été traduits en français. Pour mener à bien ce projet, nous avons élaboré une méthodologie à partir de celle déjà utilisée avec succès dans des études antérieures menées au sein du même axe de recherche que le nôtre. En plus de l’annotation et l’interrogation informatisée de notre corpus, cette méthodologie consiste en la mise en relation, au plan informatique, de plusieurs traductions d’un même texte. De par sa complexité technique, son élaboration constitue l’un des objectifs majeurs de notre étude. Les résultats obtenus nous ont permis de confirmer deux de nos trois hypothèses : 1) la totalité des modes de conceptualisation identifiés dans notre corpus anglais se retrouvent également dans chacune des traductions, et 2) aucun mode de conceptualisation métaphorique ne peut être dégagé des traductions françaises qui n’est pas déjà présent dans l’original anglais. En plus de nous permettre de comparer chaque traduction à l’original anglais, ces résultats nous ont également permis de comparer entre elles les différentes traductions françaises de l’OS. Ce mémoire de maîtrise comporte six chapitres, qui correspondent tour à tour à : notre cadre théorique, l'état de la question, nos hypothèses et nos objectifs, notre méthodologie, nos résultats et la discussion de ces résultats. / In 1859, prominent British naturalist Charles Darwin published On the origin of species by means of natural selection, or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life (OS). In this book, Darwin introduces his theory of evolution. Since its inception, however, the Darwinian theory of evolution has been shrouded in controversy, rejected outright by some (proponents of creationism, intelligent design, etc.) or highjacked by others (proponents of eugenics, social Darwinism, etc.). Yet the profound impact of the theory extends well beyond the English-speaking world. Despite this, the French translations of this important book have rarely been studied. Therefore, in the current study, we have chosen to fill this gap and study the French translations of the OS. Our study is conducted within a framework that is mainly concerned with conceptual metaphors in biomedical discourse, as well as the problems they cause in the process of translation. We have thus chosen to focus on the identification of conceptual metaphors in the OS, and the ways in which they were translated into French. For this project, we developed a methodology involving the electronic annotation and interrogation of our corpus, namely the OS and its French translation. It also involves the creation of electronic links between a translation and its source text. This methodology is based on a previous one, already used successfully in other studies. Due to its complexity, its development constitutes one of the major objectives of our study. The results thus obtained have made it possible to confirm two of our three hypotheses: 1) all conceptual metaphors identified in the original English text of the OS can be found in each of the French translations, and 2) no conceptual metaphor can be found in any of the French translations that is not already present in the original English text. The results obtained allowed us to compare each translation to the original text, but also to compare the translation amongst themselves.
