Knudtson, Kevin M., Glass, Randy 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Today’s telemetry systems can reduce spectrum demand and maintain secure voice by encoding analog voice into digital data using; Continuously Variable Slope Delta Modulation ( CVSD ) format and imbedding it into a telemetry stream. The model CSC-0390 DvD system is an excellent choice in decoding digital voice, designed with flexibility, efficiency, and simplicity in mind. Flexibility in design brings forth a capability of operating on a wide variety of telemetry systems and data formats without any specialized interfaces. The utilization of 74HC series circuit technology makes this DvD system efficient in design, low cost, and lower power consumption. In addition the front panel display and control function is also is an example of Simplicity in design and operation.

Study of efforts in continuously reinforced concrete pavements as railway platforms.

Freitas, Rodrigo Souza de 01 April 2019 (has links)
Since the 1940s, continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) is a technology used in the United States of America (USA) for road traffic. Starting in 1972, the CRCP construction premises were applied to railway lines in Germany. Use of PCCA as a railway platform is relatively recent and there are no specific standards for its scaling and analysis, there are no specific standards for its design and analysis. Given this, the structural behavior of the PCCA road is adopted for the rigid railways. The central objective of this work is to understand the structural behavior of a conventional CRCP used as a railway platform. For this, numerical simulations were performed with Abaqus/CAE software to develop a conventional CRCP model calibrated with field test results. Later, simulations with fixations, rails and three different vehicles loads were conducted in the model initially proposed. The CRCP simulations as railway platform consisted of evaluating whether the positioning of the rail load in relation to the CRCP transverse cracks influenced the structural behavior of the pavement. A parametric study was also performed on the permanent track elements and on the concrete fatigue life. As a result, the pavement lifespan observed under these vehicles loads is within that expected for rigid railway platforms, for the three fatigue models used. However, in the case of the cargo vehicle, the fatigue models showed a design life inferior that expected for rigid railway platforms; therefore, the pavement would not be appropriate for the loading of cargo vehicles. The parametric study showed that the stiffness of the fixings is the element that most influences track deflection, tensile stress at the bottom of the slabs and tensile stress in the rails. The improvement of the foundation decreases the tensile stress in the pavement without changing the deflection in the permanent way.

REDUCED FIDELITY ANALYSIS OF COMBUSTION INSTABILITIES USING FLAME TRANSFER FUNCTIONS IN A NONLINEAR EULER SOLVER

Gowtham Manikanta Reddy Tamanampudi (6852506) 02 August 2019 (has links)
<p>Combustion instability, a complex phenomenon observed in combustion chambers is due to the coupling between heat release and other unsteady flow processes. Combustion instability has long been a topic of interest to rocket scientists and has been extensively investigated experimentally and computationally. However, to date, there is no computational tool that can accurately predict the combustion instabilities in full-size combustors because of the amount of computational power required to perform a high-fidelity simulation of a multi-element chamber. Hence, the focus is shifted to reduced fidelity computational tools which may accurately predict the instability by using the information available from the high-fidelity simulations or experiments of single or few-element combustors. One way of developing reduced fidelity computational tools involves using a reduced fidelity solver together with the flame transfer functions that carry important information about the flame behavior from a high-fidelity simulation or experiment to a reduced fidelity simulation.</p> <p> </p> <p>To date, research has been focused mainly on premixed flames and using acoustic solvers together with the global flame transfer functions that were obtained by integrating over a region. However, in the case of rockets, the flame is non-premixed and distributed in space and time. Further, the mixing of propellants is impacted by the level of flow fluctuations and can lead to non-uniform mean properties and hence, there is a need for reduced fidelity solver that can capture the gas dynamics, nonlinearities and steep-fronted waves accurately. Nonlinear Euler equations have all the required capabilities and are at the bottom of the list in terms of the computational cost among the solvers that can solve for mean flow and allow multi-dimensional modeling of combustion instabilities. Hence, in the current work, nonlinear Euler solver together with the spatially distributed local flame transfer functions that capture the coupling between flame, acoustics, and hydrodynamics is explored.</p> <p> </p> <p>In this thesis, the approach to extract flame transfer functions from high-fidelity simulations and their integration with nonlinear Euler solver is presented. The dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) was used to extract spatially distributed flame transfer function (FTF) from high fidelity simulation of a single element non-premixed flame. Once extracted, the FTF was integrated with nonlinear Euler equations as a fluctuating source term of the energy equation. The time-averaged species destruction rates from the high-fidelity simulation were used as the mean source terms of the species equations. Following a variable gain approach, the local species destruction rates were modified to account for local cell constituents and maintain correct mean conditions at every time step of the nonlinear Euler simulation. The proposed reduced fidelity model was verified using a Rijke tube test case and to further assess the capabilities of the proposed model it was applied to a single element model rocket combustor, the Continuously Variable Resonance Combustor (CVRC), that exhibited self-excited combustion instabilities that are on the order of 10% of the mean pressure. The results showed that the proposed model could reproduce the unsteady behavior of the CVRC predicted by the high-fidelity simulation reasonably well. The effects of control parameters such as the number of modes included in the FTF, the number of sampling points used in the Fourier transform of the unsteady heat release, and mesh size are also studied. The reduced fidelity model could reproduce the limit cycle amplitude within a few percent of the mean pressure. The successful constraints on the model include good spatial resolution and FTF with all modes up to at least one dominant frequency higher than the frequencies of interest. Furthermore, the reduced fidelity model reproduced consistent mode shapes and linear growth rates that reasonably matched the experimental observations, although the apparent ability to match growth rates needs to be better understood. However, the presence of significant heat release near a pressure node of a higher harmonic mode was found to be an issue. This issue was rectified by expanding the pressure node of the higher frequency mode. Analysis of two-dimensional effects and coupling between the local pressure and heat release fluctuations showed that it may be necessary to use two dimensional spatially distributed local FTFs for accurate prediction of combustion instabilities in high energy devices such as rocket combustors. Hybrid RANS/LES-FTF simulation of the CVRC revealed that it might be necessary to use Flame Describing Function (FDF) to capture the growth of pressure fluctuations to limit cycle when Navier-Stokes solver is used.</p> <p> </p> <p>The main objectives of this thesis are:</p> <p>1. Extraction of spatially distributed local flame transfer function from the high fidelity simulation using dynamic mode decomposition and its integration with nonlinear Euler solver</p> <p>2. Verification of the proposed approach and its application to the Continuously Variable Resonance Combustor (CVRC).</p> <p>3. Sensitivity analysis of the reduced fidelity model to control parameters such as the number of modes included in the FTF, the number of sampling points used in the Fourier transform of the unsteady heat release, and mesh size.</p> <p> </p> <p>The goal of this thesis is to contribute towards a reduced fidelity computational tool which can accurately predict the combustion instabilities in practical systems using flame transfer functions, by providing a path way for reduced fidelity multi-element simulation, and by defining the limitations associated with using flame transfer functions and nonlinear Euler equations for non-premixed flames.</p> <p> </p><br>

Real-time Detection And Tracking Of Human Eyes In Video Sequences

Savas, Zafer 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Robust, non-intrusive human eye detection problem has been a fundamental and challenging problem for computer vision area. Not only it is a problem of its own, it can be used to ease the problem of finding the locations of other facial features for recognition tasks and human-computer interaction purposes as well. Many previous works have the capability of determining the locations of the human eyes but the main task in this thesis is not only a vision system with eye detection capability / Our aim is to design a real-time, robust, scale-invariant eye tracker system with human eye movement indication property using the movements of eye pupil. Our eye tracker algorithm is implemented using the Continuously Adaptive Mean Shift (CAMSHIFT) algorithm proposed by Bradski and the EigenFace method proposed by Turk &amp / Pentland. Previous works for scale invariant object detection using Eigenface method are mostly dependent on limited number of user predefined scales which causes speed problems / so in order to avoid this problem an adaptive eigenface method using the information extracted from CAMSHIFT algorithm is implemented to have a fast and scale invariant eye tracking. First of all / human face in the input image captured by the camera is detected using the CAMSHIFT algorithm which tracks the outline of an irregular shaped object that may change size and shape during the tracking process based on the color of the object. Face area is passed through a number of preprocessing steps such as color space conversion and thresholding to obtain better results during the eye search process. After these preprocessing steps, search areas for left and right eyes are determined using the geometrical properties of the human face and in order to locate each eye indivually the training images are resized by the width information supplied by the CAMSHIFT algortihm. Search regions for left and right eyes are individually passed to the eye detection algortihm to determine the exact locations of each eye. After the detection of eyes, eye areas are individually passed to the pupil detection and eye area detection algorithms which are based on the Active Contours method to indicate the pupil and eye area. Finally, by comparing the geometrical locations of pupil with the eye area, human gaze information is extracted. As a result of this thesis a software named &ldquo / TrackEye&rdquo / with an user interface having indicators for the location of eye areas and pupils, various output screens for human computer interaction and controls for allowing to test the effects of color space conversions and thresholding types during object tracking has been built.

Étude de l’évolution de la réactivité des matériaux porteurs d’oxygène dans un procédé de combustion en boucle chimique / Study of the reactivity evolution of oxygen carriers in a chemical looping combustion process

Tilland, Airy 04 December 2015 (has links)
An oxygen carrier (NiO/NiAl2O4) is used to deliver oxygen during the combustion of methane. It is then regenerated by air. The oxygen carrier material degrades over time, which increases the costs of the process and reduces its performance. The present study aims at determining the impacts of thermal and chemical phenomena on the oxygen carrier degradations. The reaction mechanisms corresponding to the reduction and oxidation of the oxygen carrier are determined and validated through experimental studies and the modeling of a continuously auto-stirred tank reactor (CASTR) and a plug flow reactor. The importance of controlling the quantity of deposited carbon in the process is illustrated. Then, the kinetic parameters of the reactions representing the reduction of nickel oxide are determined with an original model of the CASTR and validated in the plug flow reactor. The interest of using the CASTR for the determination of kinetic constants of the reactions involved in CLC process is presented. The obtained parameters give a good description of all reactions even if additional work is required to obtain a better precision of the results. Finally, a degradation mechanism of the oxygen carrier has been proposed. This mechanism describes the large production of fine particles separated from the grains and their role in the observed agglomeration phenomena. The support material, supposed to be inert, provides some of its oxygen. The methodology developed in this work could be adapted for the analysis and the characterization of other oxygen-carriers

Filsinger, Markus 20 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The influence of biofilm, encrustation, flow velocity and water quality on the release of PAHs was investigated in batch, continuously flown reactor experiments and in a pipe rig system. Chlorination of coal-tar coated stainless steel slides with biofilm resulted in an almost complete removal of the biofilm and an increase of the release of fluorene, phenanthrene and fluoranthene. PAH release of coal-tar coated stainless steel slides exposed to a solution of drinking water with 0,1% sodium azide as an inhibitor of the respiratory chain which did not remove the biofilm led to an increase of all observed PAHs up to the same magnitude as without biofilm. In chlorinated coal-tar leachate the following derivatives were detected while partly utilizing an easy method for a continuously extrac-tion: chloroacenaphthene, 1-chloropyrene, 9-fluorenone, anthrone. While reaction products of phenanthrene and fluoranthene could not be found a further reaction to 9-fluorenone catalysed by the coal-tar surface is proposed. Instationary corrosion and no aerobic degradation are the reasons for PAH increase during stagnation periods.
