Making a market for art : Agnews and the National Gallery, 1855-1928

Pezzini, Barbara January 2018 (has links)
The thesis investigates the interaction that developed between a major art dealer, Thos. Agnew and Sons (Agnews), and a principal public collection, the London National Gallery, from 1855 to 1928. Agnews played a crucial role in the life of the National Gallery and greatly facilitated the museum accession of important paintings, such as the Madonna Ansidei by Raphael, the Rokeby Venus by Velazquez, the Portrait of Doge Vincenzo Morosini by Tintoretto, and many others. In turn, collaborating with the National Gallery allowed Agnews to penetrate the international Old Masters market and reach for higher social standing. Through the analysis of ten case studies of acquisitions, which are supported by new archival evidence and are contextualised within a broader historical and theoretical framework, this thesis charts the emergence, development and decline of the rapport between the two organisations. It analyses how Agnews and the National Gallery began as two unconnected entities in the mid-nineteenth century, explores how their distinct trajectories turned into a close, collaborative rapport during the 1880s, and finally examines how in the third decade of the twentieth century they separated and initiated a newly detached professional relationship. Appropriating sociological theories by Pierre Bourdieu, Bruno Latour, Viviana Zelizer and others, this study investigates museum acquisitions as resulting from complex interplays of cultural and commercial forces within the field of cultural production. Acquisitions are further enlightened by the analysis of the networks that underpin them, which provide additional evidence on how economic factors are embedded within broader social constructs. By detailing and locating these processes and relationships within the historical context of a broad shift towards commercialisation, yet demonstrating that cultural elements are part of the dealers activities and that commercial values are an intrinsic component of the museum, this study provides an insight into the historical origins of modern-day relationships between museums and art dealers.

Niu, Dandan 27 June 2018 (has links)
For decades, France has imposed quotas for Francophone music. Radio stations need to reserve a minimum percentage of total song plays for French-language songs since 1996. The development of streaming services, which faces no quotas, has changed how we listen to music and poses a new challenge to regulators. The applicability of quotas is increasingly difficult in the radio broadcasting industry and raises the question of competitive disadvantage. In this thesis, I try to answer three main issues on the topic of music consumption in this changing ecosystem. First, I empirically examine the strategic responses of French radio stations to quotas for Francophone music. Do stations comply with the quotas? Is the realized audience for Francophone music lower than it would be in the absence of these strategic responses? To answer these questions, I use detailed data on the playlists of major radio stations in France to show that stations have some scope for adjusting their playlists subject to the quota constraints. Second, I build a dataset to provide some descriptive evidence on radio and streaming services. These are entirely different economic models, and are not comparable without adjusting the dataset to reflect the differences. In order to compare the audience number of music titles on radio stations with the number of streams on streaming services, I develop a methodology to combine radio data with streaming data in France in 2016. Third, using this novel dataset, I look at music consumption pattern and music variety on streaming services compares to that of radio. I also provide empirical evidence on the consumption externalities of both markets.

[pt] ENSAIOS EM ECONOMIA POLÍTICA E CULTURA / [en] ESSAYS IN POLITICAL AND CULTURAL ECONOMICS

PEDRO HENRIQUE THIBES FORQUESATO 07 December 2016 (has links)
[en] This thesis is composed of three papers, the first in organizational economics and culture; the last two in political economics. In the first chapter, we model the relation between dissemination of social norms of work ethic and incentives proposed by firms, which we motivate using evidence from three different datasets. In the second chapter, we examine whether neighbors income affects voting, using data from election results for the 2004-2012 Presidential Elections in Unites States, by precinct and block group. That way, we try to contribute to understanding the reason why there are different demands for income redistribution. As an identification strategy, we use year fixed-effects and tract year dummies; tract is the smallest geographic unit larger than block group (on average, each tract contains 4 block groups). In the third chapter, we study patronage, investigating the effect of a mayoral candidate s victory on the probability that members of his party (or parties in the same presidential coalition) occupy public jobs in the government, or on their income accrued from government, in case they are already public employees. We also analyze the effect of a party s victory over the number of registered members of that party in future years, which would indicate that voters affiliate to political parties as a way to signal support to the office holder. We estimate plausibly causal effects of a party holding mayoral position by comparing municipalities where that party nearly won with places where it nearly lost.

Sociedades culturais, sociedades anônimas: distinção e massificação na economia da cultura brasileira (Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, 1890-1922) / Cultural societies, anonymous societies: distinction and massification in brazilian cultural economics (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, 1890-1922)

Moraes, Julio Lucchesi 18 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the economic aspects of the financing and management of the Brazilian culture in the period 1890-1922 in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The argument is based on extensive survey of quantitative data extracted from primary sources from both Brazilian and international historical archives connected to the dynamics of initiatives, spaces and institutions of distinct artistic media music, theater, cinema and plastic arts. More than a simple gathering of data, the project here is to undertake a synthetic effort, focusing on the identification of economic macrofunctionalities in the world of culture in its different manifestations. In dialogue with the great names of the international cultural theory such as Pierre Bourdieu and Theodor Adorno, the research centers attentions in the identification and understanding of the action of two structuring social forces: massification and distinction. Related, diverging and mutually influential, these are the two central biases for the structuring of the Brazilian cultural circuits. The two forces will be present in various cultural activities of the period. The result of this complex interaction is a mosaic where socioeconomic distinction, elitism and the instrumentalization of culture for exclusionary purposes triumphs.

Motstridiga motprestationer : En studie om museers finansiella möjligheter och utmaningar / Contradictory compensation : A study concerning museums financial possibilities and challenges

Schill, Emma, Ruckstuhl, Angelica January 2018 (has links)
Introduction This master ́s thesis focuses on the financial situation in a number of museums located in Stockholm, Sweden. In particular the study focuses on external financing and sponsorship and which means that are given to meet the conditions surrounding financial support. The aim of the study is to increase the knowledge of how the financial situation for museums looks like and how the interaction between cultural and economic capital shows. Theory The theoretical framework for the study is based on the theory of cultural economics and Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural / economic capital and his concept of space. The study used Bruno Freys terms Superstar Museumsand thetotal experience. Method The main method for the study was a comparative method, but a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods were also applied in the study. Interviews were conducted with informants from a number of the museums and data from all the selected museums was collected and compared. The material also consisted of a variety of written material, mostly annual reports, but also news articles, reports and official documents. Analysis & Results The material shows a wide range of factors defining the economic situation of museums in Stockholm. A large part of the income comes from public fundings for the public museums. The private museums are more dependent on incomes from admission fees and external financing. For many of the public museums the market based rents for the building is an issue that causes economic distress. Conclusions Many museums work with sponsorships and have a positive view on external collaborations, at the same time the majority of the museums report a low revenue from sponsorships. The legal framework makes it more difficult for public museums to work with external financing and the taxation system aggravates sponsoring in museums. The free admission reform was both criticized and applauded and divided the private and public museums.

The evaluated disbursements, conducted by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), from 2007 to 2012, consist of long-term credit for opening new screens, with below-market interest rates and a flexible collateral structure. The econometric methodology used is the Synthetic Control Method, as formalized by Abadie et al. (2010). Under this method, it was not possible to identify any positive contribution of the credit policy after comparing the individual performance of the exhibitors who received the credit versus their synthetic controls, nor on the evolution of the number of screens nor on admissions. Furthermore, a possible aggregate effect was tested, considering the evolution of the Brazilian number of admissions per capita, also with no positive contribution of the policy being identified.

L'évolution du droit d'auteur à l'heure du livre numérique : les conditions de développement d'un nouveau marché / The evolution of copyright in the digital book industry : the development conditions of a new market

Petrou, Jessica 23 March 2016 (has links)
After the music and the audiovisual industries, it is the turn of the publishing world to start its digital revolution. The proper functioning of the cultural industries is based on a specific and old intellectual property law: the copyright. Economics usually identifies it as the guarantor of a subtle balance between the incentive for the creation of authors and good dissemination of their works. The emergence of digital technology modifies the economic environment in which copyright applies and therefore alters its traditional effects. This doctoral thesis in economics aims at seizing such new consequences on the book market in order to assess the relevance of copyright in its current form and its possible revision. The analysis of the two aspects of copyright shows that it does not produce the same effects in the market of digital books than in the traditional one: despite the decrease of economic constraints, the current legal framework remains rigid and challenges both the stability of author’s remuneration and the sound management of the dissemination opportunities on the digital book market. That is why we discuss some general principles applicable to an effective copyright and suggest some guidelines for the renewal of the copyright regulation allowing to seize opportunities offered by the digital technology both in terms of encouraging the creation and distribution of books.

Music markets and the adoption of novelty : experimental approaches / Marché de la musique et adoption de la nouveauté : approches expérimentales

Bernard, Anna 06 June 2017 (has links)
By its prototypical nature, each musical good, and by extension each cultural good, is new. The aim of this thesis is two study the consumption and the funding of musical novelty, using two experimental approaches : the use of in-lab experiments to study demand (part I) and the use of experimental measures to understand field behaviors (part II). The first part explores the determinants and characteristics of demand for novelty. In the first chapter, we study the demand concentration when consumers can choose between established artists and new entrants. The second chapter presents estimations of an almost ideal demand system for four musical genres. The second part of this thesis focuses on contributors’ behaviors of a reward-based crowdfunding platform. In a third chapter, we propose a model of decision to contribute to a musical project, based on the observation that contributors are exposed to two types of risk : a risk of coordination failure and a risk of non delivery. With this in mind, illusion of control allows to understand the timing of decision. A closer look at the role of risk preferences shows that risk aversion is negatively correlated with contributions when coordination is ensured. On the contrary, the correlation becomes positive at the beginning of a campaign. In the last chapter, we investigate the mixed nature of crowdfunding. Results suggest that the decision to contribute falls within a donation logic while the decision on how much to contribute falls within a consumption logic.
