A Longitudinal Examination of the Effects of Acculturation and Mental Health Problems on Immigrant Father Involvement: A Cross-Cultural Study

The present study examined how acculturation, mental health problems, and parenting stress are associated with two dimensions of father involvement longitudinally for Latino and Chinese immigrant fathers using a nationally representative sample of young children and their resident fathers from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B). After controlling for a variety of individual and demographic characteristics and previous levels of father involvement, results from multiple group structural equation modeling revealed that immigrant fathers' English proficiency is negatively associated with care-taking involvement at 2 years, but positively associated with care-taking involvement at 4 years. Interestingly, mothers' English proficiency is also positively associated with fathers' care-taking involvement at 2 years. In addition, fathers' US citizenship is positively associated with care-taking involvement at 2 years. Finally, mothers' US citizenship is negatively associated with fathers' literacy or language involvement at 2 years. In contrast with the hypotheses, no significant differences between Latino and Chinese immigrant fathers were found. Findings suggest that some dimensions of acculturation affect different dimensions of father involvement across different groups of immigrants, and the impacts may remain significant even four years after the child birth.

在目前愈來愈受重視的文化認同議題上,譚恩美在《喜福會》中充分地展現了華裔美國人在美國環境中的認同困境。面對自己的雙重文化背景,華裔美國人往往採取抗拒的態度,這常使得中國認同成為她們的包袱,誤以為只有拋棄中國認同才能使她們在美國被認同與接受。本論文提供了三個主題,分別從華裔美人的自我認同、語言和時空變化中打破華裔美國人普遍的迷思,亦即隱藏甚至打壓自己的中國認同才能使自己的認同不致混亂而獲得平衡。這三項主題同時也顯示在文中的華裔美人的內心成長,從抗拒到認同,她們終對自我肯定並創造出獨立的華裔美國人的歷史。 Introduction Chapter One: Disintegration of a Unitary Chinese or American Self: Emergence of New Female Selfhood Chapter Two: Decentering the Languages Chapter Three: Breaking the Boundaries of Time and Space Conclusion / Amy Tan has created The Joy Luck Club a book with Chinese Americans' struggles and inner conflicts in American context. In this book, Tan manages four pairs of Chinese American mothers and daughters to demonstrate their conflicts in both generation gaps and cultural identities. In the searching of cultural identities, we see resistance, negotiation and ultimately the communication between the mothers and the daughters. This book successfully portraits the becoming process of the in-between cultural identities of the Chinese Americans. This thesis is divided into five parts: Introduction, three chapters, and Conclusion. Three chapters discuss the development of the characters via the themes of self-construction, language application, and the arrangement of time and space not only to abolish monolithic American cultural identity but also to motivate an equal valuation for Chinese identity. By exploring these themes in the life of the Chinese Americans in The Joy Luck Club, I would like to inspire a border perspective for Chinese Americans to reach their cultural identities.

價值觀與生活型態是消費者從事各項消費行為的基礎,透過價值觀及生活型態可以解釋及預測消費者行為,因此對於研究消費者行為是相當重要的基礎主題之一。Rokeach (1973) 認為價值觀是一種持久的信念,這樣的信念使個人或社會對於某些特定的行為模式或是事情的結果產生偏好。Lazer (1963) 將生活型態定義為一種有特性的生活模式,代表某一個群體或社會有別於其他群體之特徵,這些特徵之差異來自於文化、價值觀及資源等綜合影響的結果。過去學者研究消費者的價值觀及生活型態時,多半以單一國家的消費者為主,雖然也有學者比較跨文化的消費者生活型態,但仍以美歐等地之研究居多。因此,本研究藉由交換至法國的機會,於當地進行消費者調查,取得第一手資料,以瞭解當地消費者生活型態及消費價值觀,並與台灣消費者進行跨文化比較。 本研究採滾雪球法抽樣,深度訪談十三位法國消費者及十九位台灣消費者。訪談內容為消費價值觀及生活型態等主題,包括工作與休閒生活、家庭及朋友關係、消費模式及金錢分配方式,並導出相關命題如:台灣人較法國人之價格敏感度高、台灣人較法國人具有品牌意識、台灣人在消費時較法國人具他人導向、台灣人較法國人具投資理財觀、台灣人較法國人重視工作所帶來的金錢滿足以及台灣人較法國人對婚姻關係有較高的期待等命題。 此外,本研究並探討消費價值觀如何具體影響消費者的生活型態及消費模式,透過本研究可發現:價格敏感度高的消費者,會隨著折扣或低價而調整其消費頻率;具他人導向的消費者會傾向購買外顯性的名牌產品,也較易受他人影響而產生衝動性消費行為。 藉由本研究可瞭解兩地消費價值觀及生活型態之差異,廠商進入兩地市場時,可參考本研究結果設計適合當地消費者之行銷策略,以期更貼近消費者需求。 / Values and lifestyles can be the foundation of most kinds of consumptions. Therefore, studying values and lifestyles is of importance for marketers to explain and predict consumers’behavior. According to Rokeach (1973), a value is defined as “an enduring belief that a specific mode of conduct or end-state of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite or converse mode of conduct or end-state of existence.”As for lifestyle, it is defined as“a distinctive or characteristic mode of living (Lazer, 1963). Past studies concerning values and lifestyles mostly focused consumers in one country. Even though some studies dealed with cross-cultural comparison, they usually compared two or more markets in American and European. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the lifestyles and consumption values of consumers in Taiwan and France to do a cross-cultural comparison between Taiwanese and French consumers. Thirteen French consumers and nineteen Taiwanese consumers were interviewed during this study. The interview questions were regarding to lifestyles and consumption values, such as respondents' work and leisure life, relations with family and friends, consumption patterns and the way to allocate money. Some important propositions are derived based on content analysis: Taiwanese consumers have higher price sensitivity, more brand consciousness, higher other-oriented degree and more saving and investment concept than French consumers. Besides, Taiwanese people place more importance on the salary of work and have higher expectation about marriage than French consumers. Furthermore, this study also discusses how consumption values influence consumers' lifestyles and consumption patterns. It reveals that consumers with higher price sensitivity will adjust their consumption patterns according to discount frequencies. Besides, people-oriented consumers tend to choose prestige brands and have more impulsive consumptions under the influence of friends. The findings of this reseach can provide suggestions to marketers in these two markets to develop marketing strategies corresponding with the values and lifestyles of local consumers.

台灣與波蘭消費者生活型態及消費價值觀之比較 / A comparison of lifestyles and consumption values between Taiwanese and polish consumers

中、東歐十國加入歐盟後,發展引起世界關注,而擁有最多人口的波蘭更是備受矚目;近年來波蘭中產階級增加,消費力提高,令研究者興起瞭解波蘭消費者的念頭。消費者的價值觀與生活型態會影響消費行為,對研究消費者行為是十分重要的主題。然而過去與消費者價值觀與生活型態相關的研究大多以單一國家之消費者為主,跨文化比較以歐美研究為多,故研究者利用到波蘭交換的機會,進行消費者生活型態與消費價值觀之調查研究,以取得第一手資料,然後與台灣消費者作比較。 本研究以滾雪球法進行抽樣,深度訪談15位波蘭消費者與19位台灣消費者。訪談內容涵蓋生活型態與消費價值觀各面向,經過分析後發現兩地消費者於金錢配置、儲蓄理財觀、信用卡使用習慣、價格取向、他人導向、品牌觀、服飾消費模式、婚姻觀、家庭觀、工作觀、宗教觀、環保觀、助人觀等方面的差異,並推導出相關命題,如:台灣消費者的價格敏感度和他人導向程度較波蘭消費者高;台灣人和波蘭人相比,與原生家庭的關係較為密切、對婚姻關係也有較高的期待,並且更具環保概念等。 除此之外,本研究也探究消費價值觀、生活型態及消費行為間的關係。本研究發現價格敏感度高的消費者傾向選擇於較便宜的通路,以及在特價的時候購物,消費次數較一般人來得少,也少有衝動性消費與犒賞自己的行為產生,而且消費時不太在意品牌,通常是購買平價的品牌;然而注重價格之餘,這些消費者也會注意商品的質感,不希望別人發現該商品很廉價。另外,具環保觀念的人,傾向有需要才購物;在衣著方面,購買次數不多,且重視品質、材質與持久性,不願買路邊攤,但也不會買很貴品牌的服飾,也不會跟隨潮流;而這些具環保理念的人與其他人相比,較注重健康或養生。 本研究結果在學術上有助於拓展國內碩士論文的跨文化研究領域,以及建立跨文化消費價值觀與生活型態之訪談大綱;在實務方面,能夠提供欲進入兩地市場的廠商一些開發市場與行銷策略的建議。 / Central and Eastern European countries have attracted worldwide attention since 10 Central and Eastern European countries joined the European Union. Among these countries, Poland, the country with the largest population among these nations, gains the most attention. In recent years, the middle class in Poland has increased, and consumer purchasing power has enhanced. These have raised more and more researchers’ interests to investigate Poland consumer’s bevaviors. Values and lifestyles affect consumer behavior. Therefore, Values and lifestyles are important subjects in consumer behavior research. However, past studies concerning values and lifestyles mostly focused on consumers in a single country. Furthermore, the literature about cross-cultural comparative analysis emphasizes on comparing more than two markets in American as well as those in Europe. Thus, this study aims to compare the lifestyles and consumption values between Taiwanese and Polish consumers. This study uses snow ball method to find appropriate samples. 15 Polish respondents and 19 Taiwanese respondents were interviewed in this study. The interview covers various aspects with regards to lifestyles and consumption values. The results showed that there are differences between Polish and Taiwanese consumers in money arrangement, credit card usage, clothing consumption patterns, brand perception and so on. Besides, some propositions that are derived from content analysis include: Taiwanese consumers are more price sensitive and other-oriented, and have higher expectations about marriage, closer relationships with their family of origin, and are more conscious about environmental protection than Polish consumers. This study also discusses the relationship among consumption values, lifestyles and consumer behavior. It reveals that consumers with higher price sensitivity prefer to make purchases in places that sell cheaper things, and in stores with discounts. They expend less frequently than most people, and seldom have impulsive consumption behaviors or reward themselves. They do not really care about brands and usually buy cheap brands. Furthermore, people who are environmentally friendly tend to go shopping only when they have actual needs. In clothing aspect, they do not buy frequently, and put emphasis on quality, material and persistence. They are not willing to buy clothes from street vendors, but they also do not buy from expensive brands. Moreover, they do not follow the trend. Compared with others, they pay more attention to keep their health well. This study helps to expand the domain of cross-cultural research and develops an interview outline for cross-cultural consumer values and lifestyles. More importantly, this study provides some suggestion to those who are willing to enter Taiwanese or Polish markets.

Acknowledgement of emotional facial expression in Mexican college students / Felicidad, cultura y valores personales: estado de la cuestión y síntesis meta-analítica

The aim of this study is to explore the patterns of emotion recognition in Mexican bilinguals using the JACFEE (Matsumoto & Ekman, 1988). Previous cross cultural research has documented high agreement in judgments of facial expressions of emotion, however, none of the previous studies has included data from Mexican culture. Participants were 229 Mexican college students (mean age 21.79). Results indicate that each of the seven universal emotions: anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise was recognized by the participants above chance levels (p < .001), regardless of the gender or ethnicity of the posers. These findings replicate reported data on the high cross cultural agreement in emo- tion recognition (Ekman, 1994) and contribute to the increasing body of evidence regardingthe universality of emotions. / Este estudio presenta un meta-análisis sobre la relación entre los valores de Schwartz y el bienestar subjetivo en distintos contextos culturales, con estudiantes, sus familiares e inmigrantes en España. Los resultados confirman una asociación significativa entre los valores y el bienestar. Auto trascendencia y apertura al cambio, y con menor intensidad, conservación, se asocian positivamente con mayor bienestar. Auto trascendencia se asocia con felicidad y satisfacción de forma positiva no homogénea, siendo los inmigrantes quienes presentan medias más bajas. Apertura al cambio se asocia con felicidad, siendo más fuerte la asociación en inmigrantes que en estudiantes. Los valores conservacionistas se asocian homogéneamente. Un segundo estudio sobre criterios de salud psicosocial y bienestar subjetivo -analizando un país sudamericano colectivista y jerárquico como Brasil, y otro europeo más individualista e igualitario como España- confirma que los valores conservacionistas, así como los de apertura al cambio y auto trascendencia, son deseables y favorecen el bienestar.

Assim, este trabalho busca estabelecer relações do conceito de burnout, a partir de uma perspectiva ética e êmica, em amostras de professores moçambicanos e brasileiros. A pesquisa, de natureza quantitativa, descritiva e exploratória, envolveu 512 professores do ensino fundamental público, que lecionam do 1º ao 7º ano, sendo 278 da Província moçambicana de Nampula e 234 do Estado de Pernambuco-Brasil (região metropolitana de Recife). Os dados foram coletados por meio do questionário sociodemográfico, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Questionário do Senso de Coerência, Escala de Resiliência para Adultos, Escala Hopkin’s Symptom CheckList e técnica de associação livre. Posteriormente, foram tabulados e analisados, recorrendo-se ao tratamento quantitativo, com o auxílio do software estatístico SPSS (Statiscal Package for Social Science) e SSA (Similarity Structure Analysis). Os resultados da análise multidimensional indicam que a estrutura fatorial da versão em português do MBI, numa projeção SSA, é compatível com a estrutura interna do Maslach Burnout Inventory. As análises estatísticas revelaram que alguns professores moçambicanos e brasileiros apresentam um quadro instalado de estresse e burnout no nível de exaustão emocional; e o senso de coerência, resiliência, ansiedade, depressão e variáveis sociodemograficas (i.e., nacionalidade, estado civil, nível de ensino lecionado, idade, formação e anos de experiência) fazem diferença na ocorrência da síndrome. Os achados sugerem ainda a existência de múltiplos contextos de estresse no trabalho dos professores, que afetam a saúde e o bem-estar dos profissionais e sua organização de trabalho, e que, tornando-se crônicos, podem contribuir para a ocorrência da síndrome de burnout. Além da pesquisa chamar a atenção para a necessidade de uma reestruturação das formas de organização do trabalho dos professores nas escolas com vista a transformação do trabalho perigoso ou nocivo em trabalho saudável e prazeroso, que possibilite o bem-estar físico e psíquico, através da adequação do trabalho às características psicológicas dos professores, ela pode construir também um instrumento didático-pedagógico capaz de ajudar os professores na reflexão sobre o contexto em que decorre a atividade laboral, evitando à exposição de situações de risco e que põem em causa a sua saúde. Portanto, sublinha-se a necessidade de um conhecimento mais aprofundado da realidade relativa ao exercício da atividade docente nas escolas do ensino fundamental moçambicano e brasileiro tendo em vista o desenvolvimento de programas de prevenção da síndrome de burnout e de engajamento no trabalho. / The Burnout phenomenon concerns workers of different countries around the world, and nowadays it has been reported as a problem for all international work organizations, particularly in educational institutions. Therefore this report seeks to stablish the concept of the Burnout from an ethic and emic point of view in patterns shown in Mozambican and Brazilian teachers. The research, of quantitative nature, descriptive and exploratory, involved 512 of primary school teachers who teach students from the 1st to 7th year, 278 from the Mozambican province of Nampula and 234 from the estate of (Metropolitan region of Recife). The data were collected through social-demographic questionaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Sense of Coherence questionaire, the Resilence Scale for adults, Hopkin’s Symptom CheckList and the Free Association Method. Subsequently that data were tabulated and analysed, using quantitative treatment with help of statistical software SPSS (Statiscal Package for Social Science) and SSA (Similarity Structure Analysis). The results of multidimensional analysis show that the factorial structure of the portuguese version of MBI in a projection SSA, is compatible with the internal structure of Maslach Burnout Inventory. The statistical analysis show that some Mozambican and Brazilian teachers presented stress and burnout to a level of emotional exhaustion; and the consistency, resiliency, anxiety, depression and social-demographic variables (i.e., nacionality, social status, teaching level, age, studies and years of experience), make a difference in the occurrence of the syndrome. The results also show the existence of multiple contexts of stress in the teachers work that affects the health and well-being of the professionals and their organizational workforce turning themselves chronic, and may contribute to the burnout syndrome, as well as the research, it is paramount to highlight the need of remodeling the different ways of organizing the teachers´ workload at schools with a view to transforming dangerous or damaging labour into a healthy and pleasurable one, making posible the physical and psychological wellbeing through the work needs to the psychological characteristics of the teachers, it could also build didactic-pedagogical instruments able to assist teachers reflect about the context that derives from the labour activity, avoiding the exposure of risky situations which compromises their health. Therefore it is highlighted here, the need of a deeper acknowledgement of the reality related to the docent´s activities around Mozambican and Brazilian primary schools, bearing in mind the developement of programs of prevention of burnout syndrome, and engagement in the workplace.

A Comparison of Attitudes About Paternal Child Support Payments in the United States and South Korea

We compared attitudes about child support between the United States and South Korean respondents, using a multiple segment factorial vignette to gather quantitative and qualitative data from 132 Americans and 132 South Koreans. South Koreans were more likely than U.S. respondents to think child support should be paid. Respondents in both countries thought fathers should pay more child support when mothers had sole custody than when both parents shared custody. Remarriage, combined with custody, affected respondents’ attitudes. The primary rationale of U.S. respondents focused on issues of fairness, while Koreans highlighted fathers’ responsibility and obligation. Cross-cultural differences in attitudes regarding child support payments, and their implications for support compliance rates in the United States and South Korea, are discussed.

, , , , Les jeux dangereux et le harcèlement entre pairs sont des phénomènes complexes et très répandus en milieu scolaire. Les ‘jeux d’asphyxie’ et les ‘jeux d’agression’ sont des con-duites à risques, devenues des questions de santé publique pourtant peu connues des professionnels et peu explorées dans le domaine scientifique. L’objectif de cette recherche a été d’étudier les ‘jeux d’asphyxie’, les ‘jeux d’agression’ et l’éventuelle implication du harcèlement entre pairs pour l’adoption de ces comportements dangereux ; cela dans le contexte transculturel France-Brésil. Une étude descriptive sur le contexte d’initiation aux ‘jeux d’asphyxie’ et aux ‘jeux d’agression’ a été menée auprès de 1395 écoliers français et brésiliens âgés entre 9 à 12 ans grâce à un questionnaire ad hoc. Le harcèlement scolaire a été évalué par le questionnaire d’Olweus (rBVQ), adapté pour les deux cultures et validé par nos soins dans cette étude. Globalement, il a été observé qu’environ 40% des écoliers français et brésiliens avaient déjà pratiqué au moins une fois un ‘jeu d’agression’ ou un ‘jeu d’asphyxie’ et pour l’implication au harcèlement, environ 52% des élèves ne sont pas concernés (‘neutres’), 27% en sont ‘victimes’, 5% comme ‘agresseurs’ et 16% comme ‘agresseurs-victimes’. Environ 15% des enfants ont été contraints de participer à un ‘jeu d’asphyxie’ et un tiers, à un ‘jeu d’agression’. Bien qu’il existe certaines différences culturelles, les phénomènes étudiés restent comparables dans les deux cultures. L’ensemble des résultats permet d’avoir un panorama descriptif sur la prévalence des jeux dangereux, de mieux comprendre les profils des élèves impliqués tant sur le harcèlement que sur les jeux dangereux et offre des éléments pour des pistes de sensibilisation à ces comportements à risque. / Dangerous games and school bullying are complex phenomena occur at all ages of childhood and adolescence. ‘Self-asphyxial behaviors’ and ‘violent games’ and are taking-risk behaviors and have become a public health problem. However, they remain largely unknown by professionals and are still poorly researched. The aim of this study was to investigate ‘self-asphyxial behaviors’, ‘violent games’, and the possible involvement of school bullying in a France-Brazil cross-cultural study. A total of 1395 French and Brazilian schoolchildren aged 9 to 12 years were assessed. Demographic characteristics and dangerous game habits were collected by means of an ad hoc questionnaire. bullying was assessed by “The revised Bully/Victim Questionnaire” of D. Olweus which adaptation in both cultures and construct validation are presented in this study. We conducted a cross-analysis between these two kinds of dangerous games, the school bullying and some demographics variables. The results show that approximately 40% of French and Brazilian schoolchildren had practiced at least once a ‘violent games’ or a ‘self-asphyxial behavior’. bullying prevalence was of 52% non-concerned children (‘neutral’), 27% of ‘victims’, 5% of ‘bullies’ and 16% of ‘bully-victims’. Over 15% of schoolchildren were constrained to participate at least once in a ‘self-asphyxial behavior’ and a third in a ‘violent game’. These three phenomena are comparable in both cultures and have few significant differences. Our results helps to better understand the phenomenon of dangerous games in school children and its intricacy with school bullying and offer some elements for the prevention of taking-risk behaviors. / As brincadeiras perigosas e o bullying escolar são fenômenos complexos que se espal-ham rapidamente no contexto escolar. Os ‘jogos de asfixia’ e os ‘jogos de agressão’ são condutas de risco, tornando-se questão de saúde pública mas, sendo ainda pouco conhecidas dos profissionais e pouco exploradas no meio científico. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar os os ‘jogos de asfixia’, ‘jogos de agressão’ e a eventual influência do bullying escolar para a adoção dos mesmos; dentro do contexto transcultural França-Brasil. Realizou-se estudo descritivo através de um questionário ad hoc sobre o contexto de iniciação aos ‘jogos de asfixia’ e aos ‘jogos de agressão’ com a participação de 1395 crianças francesas e brasileiras com idade entre 9 a 12 anos. O envolvimento em bullying foi avaliado pelo questionário de Olweus (rBVQ) adaptado para as duas culturas e validado por nossa equipe. Globalmente, foi observado que cerca de 40% das crianças francesas e brasileiras já haviam praticado, ao menos uma vez, um ‘jogo de agressão’ ou um ‘jogo de asfixia’; quanto ao envolvimento em bullying, cerca de 52% das crianças não estão envolvidas (‘neutros’), 27% o estão enquanto ‘vítimas’, 5% como ‘agressores’ e 16% como ‘agressores-vítimas’. Cerca de 15% dos escolares foram forçados a participar ao menos uma vez de um ‘jogo de asfixia’ e um terço, a um ‘jogo de agressão’. Ainda que existam certas diferenças culturais, os fenômenos estudados permanecem comparáveis nas duas culturas. Os resultados representam um panorama descritivo sobre a prevalência das brincadeiras perigosas no contexto escolar, e possibilitam melhor compreender o perfil dos escolares envolvidos, tanto em bullying como nas brincadeiras perigosas, oferecendo elementos para pistas de sensibilização aos comportamentos de risco.

[pt] O objetivo desta tese é avaliar as semelhanças e diferenças das motivações para a parentalidade (MP) em uma amostra de homens e mulheres adultos dos países do Brasil e do Peru. Especificamente, os objetivos foram investigar as relações do MP com variáveis biosociodemográficas (ex. Sexo, idade, inserção no trabalho, estado civil, número de irmãos, cuidado de irmãos mais novos na infância ou adolescência), psicológicas (positividade, religiosidade, personalidade), relacional (ajustamento diádico e suporte familiar) e reprodutivo (desejos reprodutivos). A amostra total foi de 4014 indivíduos; 2029 peruanos (68,1 porcento mulheres) de 22 departamentos do país e 1985 brasileiros (83,6 porcento mulheres) de 27 estados diferentes. O objetivo do Capítulo I é descrever o estado da arte no estudo das MP por meio de uma revisão sistemática e duas revisões teóricas que visam descrever as principais teorias que explicam as MP, as evidências empíricas que as sustentam e a descrição do modelo Trait-Desires-Intenção-Behaviour utilizado como base teórica para esta tese. O capítulo II, composto por três artigos psicométricos, descreve a adaptação e análise de validade do Childbearing Motivation Questionnaire (CBQ) (Miller, 1995) para seu uso no Brasil e no Peru e testa a possibilidade de uso dessa escala para estudos transculturais nos dois países. O capítulo III, composto por dois artigos empíricos, analisa as motivações positivas (MPP) e negativas (MPN) para a parentalidade na população brasileira e peruana respectivamente, analisando suas relações com variáveis sociodemográficas, relacionadas à infância, características pessoais e relacionamento. Finalmente, o capítulo IV, por meio de três artigos transculturais, fornece dados sobre as diferenças e semelhanças das MPP e seus variáveis preditivas e também a relação do MPP com os desejos reprodutivos no Brasil e no Peru. Notamos a necessidade de continuidade dos estudos sobre o assunto. Esta tese tem como objetivo contribuir para a área da psicologia reprodutiva ao fornecer um instrumento de mensuração das MP para uso no contexto peruano e brasileiro e por apresentar resultados nunca antes discutidos na literatura latino-americana da área. / [en] The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the similarities and differences of the childbearing motivations (CM) in a sample of adult men and women from the countries of Brazil and Peru. Specifically, the objectives were to investigate the relationships of the CM with biosociodemographic variables (ex. Sex, age, work, marital status, number of siblings, care of younger siblings in childhood or adolescence), psychological (positivity, religiosity, personality), relational (dyadic adjustment and family support) and reproductive (reproductive desires).The total sample was 4014 subjects; 2029 Peruvians (68.1 percent women) from 22 departments of the country and 1985 Brazilians (83.6 percent women) from 27 different states. Chapter I aims to describe the state of the art in the study of CM through a systematic review and two theoretical reviews that aim to describe the main theories that explain CM, the empirical evidence that supports them and the description of the model Trait - Desires-Intentions-Behaviors used as the theoretical basis of this thesis. Chapter II, composed of three psychometric articles, describes the adaptation and validity analysis of the Childbearing Motivation Questionnaire (CBQ) (Miller, 1995) for use in Brazil and Peru and tests the possibility of using this scale for cross-cultural studies in both countries. Chapter III, composed of two empirical articles, analyzes the positive (PCM) and negative (NCM) childbearing motivations for parenting in the Brazilian and Peruvian population respectively, analyzing their relationships with sociodemographic variables, related to childhood, personal characteristics and couple relationship. Finally, chapter IV, through three cross-cultural articles, provides data on the differences and similarities of PCM and predictor variables of PCM and as well as the relationship of PCM with reproductive desires in Brazil and Peru. We note the need for continuity of studies on this subject. Específicamente, los objetivos fueron investigar las relaciones de las MP con variables biosociodemográficas (ex. sexo, edad, inserción en el estado de trabajo, estado civil, número de hermanos, cuidado de hermanos menores en la infancia o adolescencia), psicológicas (positividad, religiosidad, personalidad), relacionales (ajustamiento diádico y soporte familiar) y reproductivos (deseos reproductivos).
