"Where is your song?" : exploring the use of songs in therapeutic conversations.

Evans, Claire Lisa 31 October 2004 (has links)
This study explored the interaction between persons and songs in therapy, and was described according to the ideas of Social Constructionism and the Narrative Approach (Freedman & Combs, 1996; Gergen, 1985, 1994; Hoyt, 1998). The meanings around songs and the therapist-client interaction were explored. A flowing process evolved that allowed for new ideas to become part of the therapeutic conversations (Anderson & Goolishian, 1988; Hoffman, 1994). The research was qualitative as befits the above-mentioned epistemology. Therapeutic conversations evolved with a single client, in which songs and music were used to explore her life story. An unstructured interview was conducted to explore the therapeutic process underlying the incorporation of songs in therapeutic conversations. The hermeneutic method of analysis was employed to identify themes and meanings that encompassed the research participant's life story as well as the therapeutic process in which songs were utilised to facilitate therapeutic dialogues. It was found that the themes elicited in this study reflected the themes discussed in the literature. The following themes underlying the therapeutic process of songs were identified: songs created an emotional release; they elicited memories, feelings and imagery; they facilitated relaxation, coloured relationships and provided a new skill. This exploration of the themes allowed for rich descriptions of the participant's story and the therapeutic conversations, to emerge. / Clinical psychology / M.A. (Clinical psychology)

Ontwikkeling van alternatiewe konstruksies in 'n terapeutiese gesprek : 'n gevallestudie

Voges, Aletta Maria 01 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / In this study a description of the development of meaningful alternative constructions has been provided. The development of meaningful alternative descriptions of a painful situation within which people find themselves could create the possibility of movement taking place. · The development of alternative descriptions was discussed by means of the following components of a therapeutic conversation: The therapist uses the different punctuations of the family in their description of the problem and takes complementary descriptions into consideration. (Punctuation/complementation.) In the description of alternative realities the therapist uses a language that creates hope for change. (Reframing.) The therapist listens to the family with respect and endeavours to hear the family's themes, to understand and to use them. (Language.) The therapist, by asking questions of which the answers facilitate further questions, accepts the responsibility to facilitate discussions that encourage participation in the therapeutic process. (Participation/questions leading to further questions.) The discussion was based on a constructivist approach. A case history was described to illustrate how meaningful alternative descriptions were developed in a therapeutic conversation. / M.A. (Social Work)

Disputed custody and the people involved : an ecosystemic perspective

Du Plessis, Annelies 06 1900 (has links)
Custody disputes have traditionally been considered a legal matter. More recent trends have seen the recognition of divorce and custody as both legal and psychological events. This necessitated the involvement of professionals of the helping services in custody recommendations. Such a multidisciplinary approach is currently taken by the Office of the Family Advocate, Pretoria, in disputed custody matters. It is suggested that the way in which the problem of custody is currently defined, is on a pragmatic level, and does not include a higher-order awareness as implied by an ecosystemic epistemology. Such an awareness denotes self-reflexivity, and calls for a more aesthetic emphasis. The dialectic between aesthetics and pragmatics is maintained by means of a descriptive look at the various systems involved in a disputed custody case. Adopting an ecosystemic epistemology is recommended, through the metaphor of mediation, as a further evolution of an already changing process. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Descriptions of difference between painful loneliness and confortable aloneness

Lake, Tracy Melanie 11 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the differences between descriptions of the lived experiences of painful loneliness and comfortable aloneness. Loneliness, is documented as a modern-day social problem, associated with psychic pain and suffering and myriad mental and physical health problems. Uncomplicated, comfortable or neutral aloneness, is scarce in the literature, with allusions to the possibility that people may never feel lonely. The 'essences' of the experience ofpainfol loneliness have been gathered from the literature, while the 'essences' of the experience of comfortable aloneness have been gathered interviews with five people who are comfortable or ambivalent about their aloneness. The qualitative methods of heuristic and phenomenological research have been used to interpret and make sense of the raw data generated. It was found that the subjective experiences of aloneness and loneliness are fundamentally different, and that the thoughts, meanings and realities associated with either state are similarly disparate. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

This thesis advocates a complementary relationship between the practices of travel literature and translation, seen as important disseminators of the image of a literature and culture beyond their national and linguistic boundaries. We also support the importance of both activities in the formation of Brazilian national literature, through the action of important mediators between our nation and the community centers with which Brazil conversed throughout its history. For this, we examined the course of four travelers translators from different national origins and historical moments, providing a brief overview of our cultural relations with foreign countries. We have selected as the subject of our study: the Frenchman Ferdinand Denis, who was in Brazil in 1816, the Englishman Sir Richard Burton, who lived in the country between 1865-69 as British consul, the French-Swiss Blaise Cendrars, who visited the country for three times in the 1920s, and American Elizabeth Bishop, poet who lived in Brazil between 1951 and 1971. Each developed its own trajectory, spreading their own images of Brazil around the world, and acting at different levels to influence our writers. Denis was a key figure in the rise of the Romantic movement in Brazil, the first author of a literary history to separate Brazilian literature from the Portuguese. Burton was a pioneer in translating our literature into English. Cendrars worked with our first generation of modernist writers in developing a national Brazilian modern art. And Bishop was the introducer of modern Brazilian literature in English. Together, the trajectories of these four travelers-translators remake a long and important period of our cultural history, showing how the foreign presence have participated in the development of our national literature and culture / Doutorado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Development of methodology of digital cartography for the recovery of verge of country property through old technical description.

Adilson Haroldo Piveta 10 April 2007 (has links)
This master thesis proposes techniques of Digital Cartography for the enhancement of the technical bases of the State in the defense of its real state patrimony in judicial actions regarding the issues related to the right of use and occupation of public lands, in great part located in areas of environmental preservation resulting, many times, in millionaire indemnifications against the State. According to COSTA NETO (2006), the predominant confusion on the real state property documentation in units of whole protection favors the occurrence of illegal actions and turns the conflicts resolution difficult, constituting one of the main hindrances to the governmental actions for the implementation and protection of those units. It favors yet the existence of the so called \"Power to Seize Industry\", through a rush in search of great sum of indemnifications by the Public Power. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance the adoption of technical procedures which incorporate modern methodologies of Digital Cartography so the plans can be compatible, deed and old descriptive memorials to cartographic bases geo-referred and unified, in order to streamline the work in defense of the State interests, saving the treasury from unsuitable indemnifications. For in such a way, the Forest Reserve of the Curucutú was overcome as object of studies, property of the Government of the State of São Paulo, with characteristics techniques sufficiently diversified, and that it served of paradigm for the establishment and application of the procedures in the excessively immovable ones well.

Clusters (k) Identification without Triangle Inequality : A newly modelled theory / Clustering(k) without Triangle Inequality : A newly modelled theory

Narreddy, Naga Sambu Reddy, Durgun, Tuğrul January 2012 (has links)
Cluster analysis characterizes data that are similar enough and useful into meaningful groups (clusters). For example, cluster analysis can be applicable to find group of genes and proteins that are similar, to retrieve information from World Wide Web, and to identify locations that are prone to earthquakes. So the study of clustering has become very important in several fields, which includes psychology and other social sciences, biology, statistics, pattern recognition, information retrieval, machine learning and data mining [1] [2].   Cluster analysis is the one of the widely used technique in the area of data mining. According to complexity and amount of data in a system, we can use variety of cluster analysis algorithms. K-means clustering is one of the most popular and widely used among the ten algorithms in data mining [3]. Like other clustering algorithms, it is not the silver bullet. K-means clustering requires pre analysis and knowledge before the number of clusters and their centroids are determined. Recent studies show a new approach for K-means clustering which does not require any pre knowledge for determining the number of clusters [4].   In this thesis, we propose a new clustering procedure to solve the central problem of identifying the number of clusters (k) by imitating the desired number of clusters with proper properties. The proposed algorithm is validated by investigating different characteristics of the analyzed data with modified theory, analyze parameters efficiency and their relationships. The parameters in this theory include the selection of embryo-size (m), significance level (α), distributions (d), and training set (n), in the identification of clusters (k).

Pastoral participation in a school context: transforming trauma

Geldenhuys, Marina, M.Th. 30 November 2007 (has links)
The research started in a school context where the teachers were severely affected by the changes in and closing of their school. In my qualitatively based research project, I embarked with the research participants on a pastoral, narrative- and appreciative inquiry approach which assist the teachers to deal more efficiently with the effects of the changes they experienced. By sharing and reflecting on their stories, a climate that's conducive to their well-being was constructed. I describe how my participatory action research invited the teachers to be active research participants, who are responsible for their own construction of richer or alternative meanings in their lives.

Högberg, Agnes, Svensk, Rebecka January 2021 (has links)
Aim: Product descriptions can communicate the beneficial properties that comes with a product, which can make the product stand out, among others. In recent decades, there has been an increased interest in both sensory and environmentally friendly product descriptions and for companies, it is becoming increasingly important to succeed in identifying the factors that affect consumers’ willingness to pay. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate how sensory and environmentally friendly product descriptions affect consumers’ willingness to pay.  Method: The method has a deductive approach, and our empirical data has been based on a quantitative method in the form of a survey. The population refers to individuals between the ages of 15 and 75 who either drink coffee regularly or have ever bought brewed coffee in a grocery store. The results have been processed in SPSS where they have been analyzed based on descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and regression analysis.  Result & Conclusion: The results of the study show that sensory product descriptions of coffee have a positive effect on the consumer’s willingness to pay. Sensory taste attributes are the most important to communicate in a product description to appeal to the consumer. On the other hand, the results of the study show that product descriptions that are ecological and Fairtrade-labeled have a stronger impact on the consumer’s willingness to pay for coffee than with sensory product descriptions.  Contribution of the thesis: Our contribution to the subject of business administration and marketing is that product descriptions for coffee should primarily communicate ecological and Fairtrade-labels if such exist, to influence the consumer’s willingness to pay. In the case of non-ecological or Fairtrade-labeled products, the sensory attributes should be communicated to have a positive impact on the consumer’s willingness to pay. Suggestions for future research: After this study, we can state that the willingness to pay differs depending on which product description is presented. It would therefore be of interest to also look at different brands for coffee when producing different types of product descriptions to see if the willingness to pay changes. For future research, it would also be of interest to see how sensory product descriptions in combination with environmentally friendly product description had affected the willingness to pay.

PHYLOGENY, CHARACTER EVOLUTION, BIOGEOGRAPHY, AND REDEFINITION OF GENERA IN THE TRIBE EDROTINI LACORDAIRE, 1859 (COLEOPTERA: TENEBRIONIDAE: PIMELIINAE)

Christopher Charles Wirth (12469815) 27 April 2022 (has links)
<p>The tribe Edrotini is the largest component group of the largest tenebrionid subfamily, Pimeliinae, in the Americas, with 427 described species/subspecies in 55 genera. However, the group is taxonomically impeded, with the last comprehensive revision published nearly 115 years ago. This is particularly regrettable since members of this tribe are ubiquitous in arid regions throughout the Americas and are exceptionally diverse in their morphology and behaviors. To provide phylogenetic context and a foundation for taxonomic work, in Chapter 1 I sample a majority of genera and reconstruct the first phylogeny of the Edrotini, using targeted enrichment sequencing. My results indicate major changes are required to both edrotine tribal composition and generic concepts. In combination with a suite of eight morphological characters I use this phylogeny to reconstruct ancestral states and test for characters correlated with stridulation the tribe. I find stridulation is strongly correlated with two morphological characters and propose a defensive function for these structures</p> <p>In Chapter 2, I use the molecular phylogeny in combination with 100 morphological characters to evaluate all Edrotini genera and members of five related tribes with constrained parsimony analyses. Based on the results thirteen genera are transferred from the Edrotini and the tribal classification is revised, with 35 genera recognized and description of a further five recommended. One neotype and seven lectotypes are designated for type species. A dichotomous key to genera is provided. Thirty-one current genera are redescribed; two species described; and four genera described, including four species. One subgenus is elevated to genus and three genera are placed as subgenera pending a species-level revision of the clade. Six genera, four subgenera, and one species are synonymized. Eleven species are transferred to the correct genus and one replacement name proposed. </p> <p>And in Chapter 3, I revise the genus <em>Edrotes</em> LeConte to include eight species distributed across arid southwestern North America. All species are redescribed, of which three are brought out of synonymy. A neotype for <em>E. rotundus</em> (Say) is designated. The synonymic position of five species is amended. An illustrated key to <em>Edrotes</em> species is included. A molecular phylogeny of all species is generated and used to infer divergences dates and historical biogeography for the genus. The most recent common ancestor of <em>Edrotes</em> is dated to the late Miocene or early Pliocene and inferred to have inhabited the Sonoran Desert. </p>
