In our first methodological walkthrough, which was the bibliographical one, we have sought the comprehension about the online culture, associated to the communication practices in the cyberspace. Due to a restructuring in the music industry, opportunities have been opened in which the independent artist and the fans have commenced to act at the core of the process of transmitting and circulating culture in the virtual sphere, due to the appropriations of the current digital communication means. As online sociocultural experiences differ from face-to-face experiences, we have deemed significant to use as methodological contribution to empirical research the online ethnography or netnography. In a qualitative manner, this study does not offer universal generalizations, as it is based on a particular and specific context. Nevertheless, it is understood that this netnographic study can raise theoretical formulations that deepen the understanding of the complex relation established in this context. The online fields studied were three fan pages of independent bands from the cities of São Luis and Teresina. To implement the study, several methods were combined in the netnographic research, among them: direct participant observation in social networking sites, face-to-face interviews, observation - with a specific target - and archival data collections (taken from social network pages of analyzed bands). As a sample, we have had three bands from the independent music scene of the cities aforementioned, whose representatives were interviewed in person at the data collection stage. To analyze the research data, we have followed the proposed criteria for the netnographic study and associated it with two other methods: interviewing analysis and network conversation analysis. After this walkthrough, our study identified, in relation to the analyzed bands, the strategies employed in social networking sites in view of fans' participation and engagement, aiming at achieving network popularity. We also analyzed the difficulties and challenges that the independent musicians of our research have faced in order to circulate their art in cyberspace; we have pointed out that this fact is associated to control mechanisms of the traditional media that are occupying the virtual space. Therefore, the so-called network neutrality can be a utopia that is further and further away from being achieved. Our study is interdisciplinary and the analysis bases are the communication sciences and the computer-mediated communication (CMC), since they are a constituent and decisive part of new habits, sociability manners and social relationship practices, merged into the day-to-day basis of billions of people.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Anne Cristina Barbosa Peres.pdf: 5033631 bytes, checksum: a13373a5103b53f844f14376bf34bfb6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-27 / Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie / The aim of our research was to reflect on the anxiety about the importance of reading in a society that wants to have reflective and critical citizens and about the lack of motivation that teenagers and young people have to read books considered literary canons by the Academy. Since the early history of education in Brazil, there is a concern about teaching of reading and writing. Lately, it has been common to hear the students complaining about the required readings and the teachers asserting that students do not read canon books, they just turn to books summaries and analysis texts that are also available on the Internet, however technology can be used as a motivating and as a contemporary tool for reading books. The focus of this research was the pedagogical high school practice developed in Portuguese classes in a private school in Higienopolis neighborhood in São Paulo. This practice is grounded in the presentation and analysis of Papers done by students from the reading of the Auto da Barca do Inferno written by Gil Vicente in the sixteenth century and which was read and rewritten by them, students in the twenty-first century, with the use of digital media that have proved effective in this rewriting. This author was chosen due to the possibility of plural reading of his written work with a critical tone that could educate the fifteenth century Portuguese society about issues of respect, ethics and citizenship. We concluded that since teenager are motivated they read and, as recorded in the guidelines proposed by the PCNs propose in their guidelines teenagers can develop a historical research that enables rediscover the world from the perspective of the writer of each age and understand the timelessness of the books histories.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Leonardo Belem de Souza.pdf: 9121191 bytes, checksum: ce21d3142b872987d62246b9cb003d92 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-09-29 / Nowadays, digital media are increasingly present throughout early childhood. The elementary schools coincide with the stage that children begin to develop their logical reasoning and cognitive aspects and brings the necessary conditions for the introduction of new technologies in learning even though there are difficulties to incorporate these methods in the teaching process. This research is based on theories and surveys that support the analysis of Khan Academy's case study (American NGO that has the mission to provide worldwide free education through digital videos available on the Internet). We are in a time that digital media are integrated, open content is available on the network such as videos, games and other digital publications are no longer restricted to only one device. Either by tablets, smartphones or personal computers, the effect of the popularization of broadband and wireless connection allows users to choose where, how and when to absorb certain content. Therefore, the contribution of this work is aligned to show teachers and students which digital media can become partners in learning with a focus on primary education. In the end, it draws an outline of the case study and investigations, presenting new paths for future lines of research that can be explored in depth / Atualmente, os meios digitais estão presentes cada vez mais cedo ao longo da infância.

Over the past 25 years, the rapid pace of spread and diversification of Internet connection devices lead us to question the cognitive impact of their presence in urban settings, now hyper-by computerized machines. The objective of this research is to deepen the understanding of communication on digital platforms connected by extending the concept of 'hypertext'. For this, we try to find it in a complex perspective of the study of networks, which considered authors from different areas of study: Duncan Watts and Albert-László Barabási in Science Network; Manuel Castells, sociology and studies on the Information Society; Edgar Morin, and his notion of knowledge and complexity; Bruno Latour and other assets authors in the development of Actor-Network Theory and its precursors, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. The research followed methodological indications of Actor-Network Theory and, through observations on different actors, mapped human and non-human interaction as a way to provide an overview of the dynamics of hypertext networks. The question raised by this situation is the concept of hypertext can be applied to analysis of communication mediated by systems connected in multiple platforms interconnected by global computer networks / A multiplicação e a diversidade de novos aparelhos conectados às redes de computadores nos últimos anos, bem como novas plataformas de softwares, tornaram ainda mais complexa a paisagem constituída pelos signos apresentados pelas interfaces digitais.

Stange, Jessica, Melin, Agnes January 2018 (has links)
Legitimacy is something all organizations aims for and much research has been done on gaining legitimacy among profit-making companies, but much less research has been done on nonprofit organizations and their legitimacy. Therefore this study will address this gap between charity organizations, which are nonprofit companies, and their legitimacy. The purpose of this study is to find the rhetorical strategies that ‘Sverige för UNHCR’ applies when communicating via Instagram to gain or maintain legitimacy. This essay's two research questions are; Firstly, what rhetorical strategies does ‘Sverige för UNHCR’ apply when communicating externally via Instagram? Secondly, what strategies for gaining and maintaining legitimacy can be found in the Instagram posts, and how are they related to the specific rhetorical strategies? In order to answer the outline research questions, qualitative methods were used. The empirical material was collected by using a rhetorical analysis of image and text published by ‘Sverige för UNHCR’ on Instagram. These qualitative methods became the base in which this essay gathers and analyses data. The theoretical framework of this study consists of classical rhetoric, visual rhetoric, legitimacy theory and legitimacy strategies. When analysing the empirical material in relation to the theories it proves how rhetoric methods shape the Instagram publications, and in turn shows how the organization works with legitimacy. This study shows that Sverige för UNHCR uses four main rhetorical strategies. It can be concluded that these rhetorical strategies helps the organization to gain and maintain pragmatic and moral legitimacy through different legitimacy strategies by Suchman (1995).

The research argues about the possibilities of bond establishment between individuals and possibilities of exercising, offered by the new technologies of communications. To accomplish it, this research analyzes the digital media developed by The Brazilian Federation of Philanthropic Breast Health Institutions (FEMAMA) and the interactions of the activists engaged on the fight against breast cancer, in these spaces. Trough theoretical research problematize the citizenship, as a guiding concept, which conducts the research practices and goes through communicational processes. It also reflects about the belonging, as a central category to the effective citizenship exercise. The research also address the techno communicative logics in which the organization’s digital spaces are involved. The investigation path concerns an epistemological reflection about methods, followed by the research procedures of documental, bibliographical, theoretical and methodological research. Besides that, the methodological strategy works through a combination of ethnographic and netnografic approaches, starting with the systemic analyses of Femama’s digital spaces, following to present activities observations and interviews with the organization’s activists. The results show the uses and appropriations the individuals do of technology during their interactions, and verifies that those communicational spaces have the potential to the exercise of communicative citizenship and to the formation of identity bonds. Although, it was possible to see that it is not enough to make the technological means to participations and interactions available to guarantee the full citizenship exercise. It is necessary to have diversity of opinions on the information’s planning and producing processes, on the discourse building methods, and on the way of thinking communications as a whole. Besides that, it became clear that the citizen perspective needs to be a part of the own organization constitution, in a structural way, which also reflect itself on daily practices.

Relevância das mídias digitais no âmbito das bibliotecas universitárias da área de exatas: identificação e análise de utilização / Relevance of digital media in the scope of university libraries in the area of exact sciences: identification and use analysis

Madruga, Stela do Nascimento 17 September 2018 (has links)
For this, it was verified in the literature how the use of information and communication technology (ICT) tools meets the demands of users\' information sources. In this approach, the main initiatives of Brazilian and foreign university libraries with better evaluation in university rankings were listed. A comparative study between the literature and the application of products and services available in the digital environments of the libraries was also elaborated. In addition, contemporary directions in library services have also been raised as a way of characterizing the present performance and the main technological propensities. The objective of the research is to evaluate the trends and verify the adaptation of the university libraries to the new technological resources of information, through the identification of what is available to the users in its websites. We used as research sample libraries in the area of mathematics, statistics and computation, then proposals were presented for the application of the resources identified for the Library Carlos Benjamin de Lyra, Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME) of the University of São Paulo (USP). From the results of this research, foreign libraries are considered to be more advanced in the use of Web 2.0 tools and also 3.0 in the resources offered to users and their services. Brazilian libraries are still timid in their work in the Digital Age, however, they show considerable advances in the development of journal portals and open access repositories, as well as using discovery systems for the integrated search of information resources.

Creating Leadership Efficacy Through Digital Media in the Electricity Supply Industry

Moodley, Kenny 01 January 2017 (has links)
Business leaders lack transformational leadership strategies to promote the use of digital communication in the electricity supply industry. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore transformational leadership strategies to promote the use of digital communication to mitigate electricity-related shutdowns and other electricity-related product recalls. The conceptual framework for this study aligns with general systems theory. The participants recruited in the study were business leaders, key account electricity consumers, and electricity consumers located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The rationale for the target population was their success in implementing transformational leadership strategies to promote the use of digital communication to mitigate the risk of electricity-related shutdowns. Data collection included semistructured interviews, direct observations with 14 participants, archival records/materials, and documents. Saldana's sequence of coding and data analysis technique using thematic coding and content analysis were used to determine specific themes and patterns derived from the 3 data sources. Based on methodological triangulation, 4 emergent themes evolved: business sustainability, digital media, electricity-related product recall crisis, and leadership efficacy that would assist leaders in growing a sustainable business in the electricity supply industry. The results of this study may contribute to positive social change by providing leaders with transformational leadership strategies for embracing digital media to ensure the industry's sustainability. This in turn would encourage improved economic activity, broad-based black economic empowerment, investments in health, education, environmental issues, and business opportunities for small businesses.

A conversation on globalisation and digital art

Milton-Smith, Melissa January 2008 (has links)
Globalisation is one of the most important cultural phenomena of our times and yet, one of the least understood. In popular and critical discourse there has been a struggle to articulate its human affects. The tendency to focus upon macro accounts can leave gaps in our understanding of its micro experiences.1 1 As Jonathon Xavier Inda and Renato Rosaldo argue there is a strong pattern of thinking about globalisation 'principally in terms of very large-scale economic, political, or cultural processes'. (See: Jonathon Xavier Inda and Renato Rosaldo (Eds.), The Anthropology of Globalisation: A Reader, Malden, Blackwell Publishing, 2002, p. 5.) In this thesis, I will describe globalisation as a dynamic matrix of flows. I will argue that globalisation's spatial, temporal, and kinetic re-arrangements have particular impacts upon bodies and consciousnesses, creating contingent and often unquantifiable flows. I will introduce digital art as a unique platform of articulation: a style borne of globalisation's oeuvre, and technically well-equipped to converse with and emulate its affects. By exploring digital art through an historical lens I aim to show how it continues dialogues established by earlier art forms. I will claim that digital art has the capacity to re-centre globalisation around the individual, through sensory and experiential forms that encourage subjective and affective encounters. By approaching it in this way, I will move away from universal theorems in favour of particular accounts. Through exploring a wide array of digital artworks, I will discuss how digital art can capture fleeting experiences and individual expressions. I will closely examine its unique tools of articulation to include: immersive, interactive, haptic, and responsive technologies, and analyse the theories and ideas that they converse with. Through this iterative process, I aim to explore how digital art can both facilitate and generate new articulations of globalisation, as an experiential phenomenon.

Public news network: digital sampling to create a hybrid media feed

Stenner, Jack Eric 30 September 2004 (has links)
A software application called Public News Network (PNN) is created in this thesis, which functions to produce an aesthetic experience in the viewer. The application engenders this experience by presenting a three-dimensional virtual world that the viewer can navigate using the computer mouse and keyboard. As the viewer navigates the environment she sees irregularly shaped objects resting on an infinite ground plane, and hears an ethereal wind. As the viewer nears the objects, the sound transforms into the sound of television static and text is displayed which identifies this object as representative of an episode of the evening news. The viewer "touches" the episode and a "disembodied" transcript of the broadcast begins to scroll across the screen. With further interaction, video of the broadcast streams across the surfaces of the environment, distorted by the shapes upon which it flows. The viewer can further manipulate and repurpose the broadcast by searching for words contained within the transcript. The results of this search are reassembled into a new, re-contextualized display of video containing the search terms stripped from their original, pre-packaged context. It is this willful manipulation that completes the opportunity for true meaning to appear.
