Of mice and bunnies : Walt Disney, Hugh Hefner, and the age of consensus

Allen-Spencer, Patricia C. 21 May 2001 (has links)
Post World War II victory culture and its fallout-the consensus ideology-led to the creation of a middle class willing to conform to a prescribed set of ideals, safely removed from all danger, and enjoying the material benefits of a growing middle-class income bracket. Walt Disney and Hugh Hefner, two seemingly ideologically opposed businessmen, recognized this economic, political, and cultural shift and sought to capitalize on it financially. A cultural-history study of both companies revels many similarities in each company's design, development, and impact on American culture. To begin with, Disneyland and Playboy appeared in the mid-1950s as Americans were settling into postwar affluence and consumerism. Disney and Hefner each recognized the changes occurring within society and intended to design areas of reprieve. As such, Disneyland and Playboy were designed as areas of refuge where one could escape the stifling conformity of middle-class America and simultaneously forget Cold War fears. Instead, Disneyland and Playboy embraced the consensus and became reflections of society and culture rather than operatives of counter-culture. To understand how each company could fail in its original intent but remain as an emblem of American culture, it is necessary to understand the era, the men behind the visions, and how each company absorbed and reacted to cultural attitudes and strains. Disney and Hefner manipulated their way into the American cultural consciousness through a series of ironies and inconsistencies. Each sought to provide a haven of diversity as an alternative to the consensus conformity rampant within 1950s society. Ultimately, Disneyland and Playboy came to represent the homogeneity Disney and Hefner sought to escape. / Graduation date: 2002

Sleeping Beauty and Her Many Relatives

Kemptner, Dorothy Jeanine 23 July 2009 (has links)
The Grimm Brothers’ Little Briar-Rose is a beloved fairytale, which is more commonly known as Sleeping Beauty. What began as a Volksmärchen, is now a world famous and beloved Kunstmärchen. The Brothers collected and adapted the tale, incorporating their own literary style, helping to develop a literary Germanic cultural history. In this thesis I analyze how the tale evolves from the original oral tale to the literary story, and how various perspectives of culture and authors, with particular audiences in mind, adapt their versions. Historical background of the Grimms and their influences, an analysis of how the story was revised by the Grimms in the 1812 and 1857 editions, how American children’s versions compare to the Grimms’ version and how Jane Yolen’s version of Sleeping Beauty meets the structural and cultural expectations of the Grimms’ tale are examined.

Analýza a komparace dramatizací Žabákových dobrodružství / Analysis and Comparison of Dramatizations of The Wind in the Willows

Šteidlová, Kateřina January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with an analysis and comparison of dramatizations of The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, a book which ranks among the British children's classics. The paper examines to what extent the dramatizations correspond to the book, whether and why they deviate from the original text, and what consequences these changes have. The thesis focuses on four dramatizations – a play by Alan Alexander Milne called Toad of Toad Hall, Alfa Theatre production of The Wind in the Willows, a Walt Disney short animated film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and Terry Jones´s adaptation of The Wind in the Willows to a feature film. In the thesis, firstly the book and then the dramatizations are analyzed in terms of the theme and genre, characters, setting, composition and language use. Subsequently, the dramatizations are examined and compared with regards to the transformation processes – selection, condensation, substitution, amplification, and changes in composition and language. In the final chapter, I summarize my findings and draw the conclusion.

Arantes, Carolina Faria 28 March 2014 (has links)
The objective of this research was to present to the cognitive-behavioral therapists a cinematherapeutic technique, based on the Disney animated films, which can be used for children and adolescents for psychoeducate about the entitlement / grandiosity scheme and insufficient self-control/self-discipline scheme, which make up the impaired limits domains, according to the theory Jeffrey Young. Seven experts professional in the clinical area of cognitive-behavioral approach aged between 26 to 47 years (𝑥= 33; DP = 8,01) and average acting time of 𝑥 = 9 anos (DP = 7,1). All participants had evidence of specialization in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), 29% had master\'s degree and 29% had postdoctoral. The instrument used was a test of judges composed of the transcription of verbal and nonverbal content of 19 scenes relative to the movies Cars , Beauty and the Beast , Wreck-It Ralph and Brave . Judges should read and judge which category was being portrayed in the scene at issue: entitlement / grandiosity scheme or insufficient self-control/self-discipline scheme. Data collected by test judges that these were nominal variables were transformed into binomial variables and then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results indicated which scenes had a prevalence of impaired limits schema domain. Regarding the movie \"Cars\" was found predominance of entitlement / grandiosity scheme in three scenes; in \"Beauty and the Beast\" three scenes were representative of entitlement / grandiosity scheme and two about insufficient self-control/self-discipline scheme; in Wreck-It Ralph four scenes were considered examples of such schemes, three relating to insufficient self-control/self-discipline scheme and one concerning the entitlement / grandiosity scheme; finally, on Brave prevalence of insufficient self-control/self-discipline scheme was found in two scenes. In total was found a predominance of the impaired limits schemes characteristics in 14 scenes, which are represented by speech and nonverbal language of the characters. These scenes can be used to psychoeducate children and adolescents about these schemes. The use of tools able to engage the child and arouse their interest is very important in cognitive play therapy and is known to that the cinematherapy has a high potential for motivating patients. Psychoeducation is an essential practice in CBT because can affect adherence to treatment and enables the achievement of the other aim of therapy. Therefore, applying the cinematherapy in psychoeducation for children and adolescents contributes to increasing the effectiveness of the therapeutic process. This work contributes to expanding the arsenal of cognitive-behavioral techniques, as it suggests scenes that can be used as psychoeducational tools in the cognitive play therapy, based on a systematic categorization.

The Disney International College Program (ICP) is an internship program sponsored by The Walt Disney Company, in which foreign university and college students travel to the United States, to spend their summer vocation working on the Walt Disney World Resort on Florida. The ICP has become very popular among Brazilian university students. Every year, almost thirty thousands of them apply for this program, though only about eight hundred manage to become a cast member. While on the program these youngsters develop a Disney Identity that is joined to their self. This research's goal is to explore the ICP role on the participants` life, showing its effects on these youngsters self-construction. In addition, we have aimed to investigate how ICP Alumni (people who took part of the ICP) manage to sustain their Disney identity, even after leaving the program. In order to meet our goal we have developed a qualitative case study, in which the case studied was the ICP alumni identity. Moreover, through our literature review we have acknowledged that someone’s self lays in the capacity to keep a particular narrative going on. Hence, our data was collected and analyzed through a narrative inquire method. Athwart our study, we have found out that the Walt Disney Company does an efficient job in convincing these youngsters that their mission and values are very important and thus, the ICP alumni become to praise the Disney Company and brand. We have also observed the existence of an actual Disney alumni community bonded by principles, ideas and consumption.
