Etude expérimentale de l'aéroélasticité d'une plaque oscillante impactée par une batterie de jets turbulents / Experimental Approach to the Aeroelastic Behaviour of an Oscillating Plate Impinged by Arrays of Turbulent Jets

Les instabilités aéroélastiques de bandes d’acier constituent aujourd’hui l’un des problèmes majeurs dans les sections de refroidissement par jets impactants des lignes de recuit continues.En effet, le traitement thermique des nouveaux aciers nécessite de très fortes pentes de température impliquant constamment des augmentations de vitesse de soufflage susceptibles de mettre en jeu des instabilités aéroélastiques. Des flottements ainsi que des divergences de bande ont déjà été constatées et identifiées. Ces deux instabilités impliquent dans la plupart des cas des chocs entre la bande et les buses de soufflage ce qui engendre des défauts de surface sur la bande.Un banc d’essai a été conçu et fabriqué dans le but d’analyser ces instabilités et d’anticiper leur apparition. A partir d’observations, la dynamique structurelle de la bande a été simplifiée à un mode de rotation rigide. Le banc comporte une plaque oscillante en mouvement forcé.Celle-ci est impactée par un dispositif de plusieurs jets axisymétriques turbulents ayant une disposition identique à celle des tours industrielles. Les efforts aérodynamiques stationnaires et instationnaires agissant sur la plaque sont mesurés au moyen de capteurs de pression.L’impact de plusieurs jets en interaction crée de très importants gradients de pression sur la plaque il est donc nécessaire que la grille de prises de pression soit très fine pour que l’estimation des efforts aérodynamiques soit correcte. La plaque est donc instrumentée de 91capteurs de pression sur une surface de 18 cm². Elle peut également être translatée dans les ois directions de l’espace, ce qui permet d’obtenir la distribution des efforts instationnaires ainsi que des coefficients aéroélastiques sur une grande surface de plaque et à différentes distances d’impact.Les mesures de pression stationnaires ont permis d’établir les courbes d’évolution des efforts d’impact des jets sur la plaque en fonction de la distance jet-plaque ainsi que de la géométrie des buses. Les résultats ont permis de déterminer la stabilité statique de la plaque en mouvement de pompage. Les mesures de vitesses des jets libres ont été effectuées paranémométrie à fil chaud et ont permis de déterminer leurs propriétés statistiques.Les mesures de coefficients aéroélastiques sur la plaque en rotation ont été effectuées surune seule géométrie de soufflage, pour différentes vitesses réduites. Les résultats mettent en évidence l’importance des effets de bords sur la stabilité de plaque. Des méthodes de post traitements ont proposées afin d’extrapoler les résultats à différentes largeurs de bande. Ils sont confrontés aux travaux de Regardin et al. (réf. [1]) et mettent en évidence des désaccords avec le cas réel. Des suggestions sont apportées afin d’améliorer la représentativité du banc vis-à-vis des bandes industrielles. / Aeroelastic instabilities of steel strips impinged by arrays of cooling gas jets have becomeone of the main issues in cooling sections of continuous annealing lines. Indeed, the new steeltreatments require very high temperature variation rates which involve increases in jetvelocities that are likely to onset some aeroelastic instabilities. Strip flutter and divergencehave already been observed and identified. These two aeroelastic instabilities imply a strongrisk of contact with the blowing boxes, which can seriously blemish the strip.An experimental test rig was designed and built in order to analyze and predict of theseinstabilities. From observations, the strip’s structural dynamics was simulated by a rigidrotation mode. The rig included a forced oscillating plate which is impinged by an array ofaxisymmetric jets having the exact industrial geometry. The plate was instrumented withpressure sensors to measure the steady and unsteady surface pressures. The impingement ofinteracting jets creates very large pressure gradients on the plate and therefore a tight mesh ofpressure taps (91 over an 18cm² jet impingement surface) was necessary to allow a goodestimation of the aerodynamic loads The plate could also be moved in the three coordinatedirections as to obtain surface mappings of the unsteady jet forces and aeroelastic coefficientscan be obtained over a wide area and different jet-to-plate distances.The variation of the impinging aerodynamic forces was established as a function of the jetto-plate distance for different nozzle geometries. These results were used to determine the jetstatic stability in plunging motion. Velocity and turbulence measurements in free jets werecarried out using hot wire anemometry in order to determine their statistical properties.Aeroelastic coefficient measurements were carried out on the oscillating plate with onlyone nozzle geometry and different reduced velocities. Results show that the plate’s stability ismainly dependent on the boundary effects. Post processing methods are suggested in order toapply the results to larger plates. Results are compared to the data of Regardin et al. (réf. [1])and emphasize some discrepancies with respect to the real case. Finally some improvementsto the test-rig are suggested for it to be more representative of the industrial situation.

Diversité génétique et adaptation au milieu chez les arbres forestiers tropicaux : étude chez le genre Virola (Myristicaceae) / Genetic Diversity and Environmental Adaptation in Tropical Forest Trees : Study of Virola Genus (Myristicaceae)

Le maintien de ressources génétiques suffisamment larges est nécessaire pour assurer la viabilité et le potentiel évolutif des populations naturelles. Cette thèse a le principal objectif de caractériser la diversité et la variabilité génétique chez le genre Virola (Myristicaceae) pour décrire les processus évolutifs qui en sont à l'origine. Premièrement,une étude de la régénération d'un échantillonnage exhaustif de V. michelii a été menée dans une parcelle du dispositif expérimental de Paracou ayant subi une exploitation forestière de faible intensité et comparée à une parcelle témoin. La diversité génétique mesurée à partir de marqueurs AFLP (Amplified Fragment-Length Polymorphism, N=229) en zones perturbées s'est révélée être plis grande qu'en zone non-perturbées. Puis, l'adaptation locale a été étudiée à travers ces mêmes individus et certains loci (AFLP) montrent une sélection divergente pour des environnements contrastés, indiquant un signe d'adaptation. Enfin, l'étude des niveaux de divergence génétique chez trois espèces de Virola du bouclier guyanais (V. michelii, V. surinamensis et V. kwatae) montrent que deux d'entre elles (V. surinamensis et V. kwatae) montrent de fortes similarités génétiques malgré leur distribution sur des environnements contrastés. des Flux de gènes intersécifiques ont été mis en évidence chez ces deux espèces-soeurs et l'hypothèse d'une spéciation écologique est avancée. Ce travail a permis d'aborder différents processus évolutifs à l'origine de la diversité génétique actuelle chez ces espèces forestières tropicales et peut fournir une contribution pour appréhender le devenir des populations. / Genetic diversity is an essential component of biodiversity. The maintenance of sufficient genetic resources is needed to ensure the adaptive potential and the viability of natural populations. In the current context of global changes, the study of adaptation in living organisms is a key task, particularly for tropical forest trees that are dominant components (in terms of biomass and as ecological drivers) of some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. The main objective of this thesis is to characterize genetic diversity and genetic variability to understand the evolutionary processes that act on them. This ecological-genetic study was carried out at the interspecific and intraspecific level in the Virola genus.If overall high levels of genetic diversity are a guarantee of prosperity for the future of the species, it seems essential to perform studies on the impact of environmental disturbance on genetic diversity. In the first section, the genetic consequences of regeneration dynamics were studied in an exhaustive sample of V. michelii in a low-intensity logging plot and in a control plot at the Paracou experimental site. A greater genetic diversity, measured from AFLP markers (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism, N = 229), was found in perturbed areas. Because studying genetic diversity within species may be useful for understanding species adaptation to environmental changes, in the second section. I studied local adaptation in a population of V. michelii on the Paracou experimental site. A genome scan approach with AFLPs (N = 229) was conducted on 77 adult individuals and 401 juveniles to identify genetic differences between populations associated to contrasting conditions for an array of environmental variables. Some loci (N = 2) were found to be subject to divergent selection, indicating adaptation to contrasting habitats.In the third section, the study of levels of genetic divergence in three Virola species of the Guiana Shield (V. michelii, V. surinamensis and V. kwatae) was investigated for nuclear and chloroplast molecular markers. V. surinamensis and V. kwatae showed strong genetic similarities despite their contrasting habitats preferences. Coalescent analyses have revealed, on one hand, a recent divergence between these two species suggesting an ecological speciation, and one the other hand that interspecific gene flow occurs between these sister-species.This work focuses on understanding evolutionary processes shaping genetic diversity and provides a useful contribution for biodiversity conservation programs.

Evaluation, information et perspectives industrielles lors des scissions de filiales par introduction en bourse / Valuation, Information and Industry Perspectives of Equity Carve-outs

Nous étudions l’évaluation, l’information et les perspectives industrielles lors des scissions de filiales par introduction en Bourse (ECO). Dans notre première étude, nous estimons les effets de richesse aux différentes étapes d’une ECO et leur lien sur les rentabilités boursières anormales de la société mère de la filiale. Nous trouvons que c’est la période de construction du livre d’ordres de l’introduction en bourse qui permet au marché financier de mieux estimer les effets de richesse positifs pour la société mère. Dans notre second travail, nousavançons que les ECO sont effectuées dans les secteurs industriels où les firmes présentent des opportunités de croissance plus faibles en moyenne. Nous démontrons que les industries concernées par des ECO ont des performances opérationnelles (mesurées par la rentabilité d’exploitation, les liquidités générées et la margeopérationnelle) plus faibles. Nous montrons également que les fusions acquisitions réalisées dans les industries où une ECO a eu lieu durant les trois années précédentes créent moins de valeur pour l’offreur que les fusions acquisitions qui ne sont pas concernées par une ECO. La dernière étude de cette thèse analyse l’impact d’une ECO sur la divergence d’estimations des analystes financiers et sur le nombre d’analystes suivants la société mère. Nous trouvons que la divergence d’estimations et le nombre d’analystes augmentent après une ECO. / We study the valuation, information and industry perspectives of equity carve-outs. In our first paper, we study the wealth effect of equity carve-outs and its relationship with the abnormal returns to the parent firm. Using thisrelationship we find that during book-building period of equity carve-out, the returns to the parent firm can be used to pre-empt the wealth effect of equity carve-out. In our second paper, we argue that equity carve-outs, on average, are carried out in industries, where opportunities are low. We find that these industries have low operating performance, gauged on profitability, cash flow and profit margin compared to industries where there are no carve-outs. In addition to this evidence, we find that the merger and acquisition activities, in which targetsare in industries where carve-out activities happened in last three years before the M&A activity, bidders have less value created compared to mergers where the target industry has no carve-out activity. In our third paper, we analyze the impact of carve-outs on the divergence of belief and the number of analysts following the firm. We find that divergence of belief increases after a carve-out and number of analysts following the firm increases, also.

Détection d'attaques dans un système WBAN de surveillance médicale à distance / Attacks detection in a WBAN system for remote medical monitoring

L'un des défis majeurs du monde de ces dernières décennies a été l'augmentation continue de la population des personnes âgées dans les pays développés. D’où la nécessité de fournir des soins de qualité à une population en croissance rapide, tout en réduisant les coûts des soins de santé. Dans ce contexte, de nombreux travaux de recherche portent sur l’utilisation des réseaux de capteurs sans fil dans les systèmes WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network), pour faciliter et améliorer la qualité du soin et de surveillance médicale à distance. Ces réseaux WBAN soulèvent de nouveaux défis technologiques en termes de sécurité et de protection contre les anomalies et les attaques. Le mode de communication sans fil utilisé entre ces capteurs et l’unité de traitement accentue ces vulnérabilités. En effet les vulnérabilités dans un système WBAN se décomposent en deux parties principales. La première partie se compose des attaques possibles sur le réseau des capteurs médicaux et sur le médium de communications sans fils entre ces capteurs et l’unité de traitement. La deuxième partie se compose des attaques possibles sur les communications à haut débit entre le système WBAN et le serveur médical. L’objectif de cette thèse est de répondre en partie aux problèmes de détection des attaques dans un système WBAN de surveillance médicale à distance. Pour atteindre cet objectif, nous avons proposé un algorithme pour détecter les attaques de brouillage radio (jamming attack) qui visent le médium de communications sans fils entre les capteurs et l’unité de traitement. Ainsi nous avons proposé une méthode de mesure de divergence pour détecter les attaques de type flooding qui visent les communications à haut débit entre le système WBAN et le serveur médical. / One of the major challenges of the world in recent decades is the continued increase in the elderly population in developed countries. Hence the need to provide quality care to a rapidly growing population while reducing the costs of health care is becoming a strategic challenge. In this context, many researches focus on the use of wireless sensor networks in WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network) systems to facilitate and improve the quality of medical care and remote monitoring. These WBAN systems pose new technological challenges in terms of security and protection against faults and attacks. The wireless communication mode used between the sensors and the collection node accentuates these vulnerabilities. Indeed vulnerabilities in a WBAN system are divided into two main parts. The first part consists of the possible attacks on the network of medical sensors and on the wireless communications medium between the sensors and the processing unit. The second part consists of possible attacks on high-speed communications between the WBAN system and the medical server. The objective of this thesis is to meet some of the problems of detecting attacks in a WBAN system for remote medical monitoring. To achieve this goal, we propose an algorithm to detect the jamming attacks targeting the wireless communications medium between the sensors and the processing unit. In addition we propose a method of measuring divergence to detect the flooding attacks targeting the high-speed communications between the WBAN system and the medical server.

With or without context : Automatic text categorization using semantic kernels

In this thesis text categorization is investigated in four dimensions of analysis: theoretically as well as empirically, and as a manual as well as a machine-based process. In the first four chapters we look at the theoretical foundation of subject classification of text documents, with a certain focus on classification as a procedure for organizing documents in libraries. A working hypothesis used in the theoretical analysis is that classification of documents is a process that involves translations between statements in different languages, both natural and artificial. We further investigate the close relationships between structures in classification languages and the order relations and topological structures that arise from classification. A classification algorithm that gets a special focus in the subsequent chapters is the support vector machine (SVM), which in its original formulation is a binary classifier in linear vector spaces, but has been extended to handle classification problems for which the categories are not linearly separable. To this end the algorithm utilizes a category of functions called kernels, which induce feature spaces by means of high-dimensional and often non-linear maps. For the empirical part of this study we investigate the classification performance of semantic kernels generated by different measures of semantic similarity. One category of such measures is based on the latent semantic analysis and the random indexing methods, which generates term vectors by using co-occurrence data from text collections. Another semantic measure used in this study is pointwise mutual information. In addition to the empirical study of semantic kernels we also investigate the performance of a term weighting scheme called divergence from randomness, that has hitherto received little attention within the area of automatic text categorization. The result of the empirical part of this study shows that the semantic kernels generally outperform the “standard” (non-semantic) linear kernel, especially for small training sets. A conclusion that can be drawn with respect to the investigated datasets is therefore that semantic information in the kernel in general improves its classification performance, and that the difference between the standard kernel and the semantic kernels is particularly large for small training sets. Another clear trend in the result is that the divergence from randomness weighting scheme yields a classification performance surpassing that of the common tf-idf weighting scheme.

What happens with the social bond as the individual oscillate between this analyticbisection? This purpose raises important questions of the use of Internet in everyday life.</p><p>A new stance is taken toward studying the Internets integration into everyday life. The focusis adjusted to the importance of emotions. Emotions of pride and shame will be treated as thesignals of social bonds state and will indicate the resistance or openness of this integration.Goffmans theory on face-work will be used as a complement. A cognitive approach on socialbonds will assist the emotional approach. This is interwoven with a perspective forunderstanding Internet as a medium in form rather than only to focus on the “content”.</p><p>The conclusion consists of a required consistency between the quality of the social bond onthe Internet and outside the Internet. The fear of inconsistency had to do with a threat of lossof face, not to come in conflict with established norms from outside the Internet.Development of close and intimate social bonds on the Internet that didn’t have a counterpartor was in inconsistency with the social bond outside Internet, lead to shame that threatenedthe social bond. The integration of Internet in everyday life is therefore not accomplished.Still, a new generation with instant access to the Internet is to be primary socialized undernew conditions.</p>

Analysis and forecasts of 300 hPa divergence associated with severe convection using ETA-212 and MM5 model data

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This study investigates severe weather events occurring in the Midwest, Central, and Northeastern United States from May through September 2004. Severe weather events are pinpointed using tornado and hail reports and correlating them with NEXRAD radar data to determine maximum intensity of the event. Severe storms that occur within 30 minutes of a model forecast hour are catalogued for further investigation. Once these events are diagnosed, ETA-212 and MM5 model data is regridded, centered on the storm. Divergence values at 300 hPa are extracted from the model data for each storm event. These storms are then grouped in three ways: all storms, tornadic storms, and hail producing storms. The averaged maximum divergence values from the ETA-212 for each group are examined from the 0 hour analysis through the 21 hour forecast. From these averaged divergence values, a matrix of recommended divergence threshold values is derived. For the MM5 data, a subset of storms is examined. The MM5 and ETA-212 are run on an identical set of storms, and the divergence forecasts are compared. / Captain, United States Air Force

Why so specious? The role of pollinators and symbionts in plant population structure and speciation along elevational gradients.

This thesis explores the role mutualist pollinators and their symbionts play in the genetic structuring and speciation of their host plants along an elevational gradient in Papua New Guinea. Using the fig and fig-wasp mutualism as a model system, we employed high-throughput sequencing techniques to explore fine-scale population genomics of both fig and wasps along their elevational range. We found there to be clear lowland and highland clustering of tree populations along the gradient, often with a mid-elevation contact zone. In the case of the pollinating wasps, we retrieved the same clustering except in this case, the genetic difference between clusters was high enough as to consider them as separate species. This result supports evidence from other studies challenging the cospeciation paradigm of one wasp species per fig species. In addition, we explore ecological traits which may promote, or at least, maintain, reproductive isolation between fig (sub)species along with behavioural preference tests from pollinating wasps. In order to further investigate the mechanisms promoting wasp speciation along the gradient, we describe Wolbachia infection status as well as strain type. Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) is often invoked as a possible speciation agent since it can rapidly provoke and maintain reproductive isolation between otherwise freely interbreeding insect populations. Finally, we explore non-pollinating fig wasp (NPFW) diversity along the gradient for a subset of our focal species. Our study reveals that there is a tight relationship between NPFW diversity and host species, and a mid-elevation peak.

Dans notre travail qui porte sur les productions romanesques majeures de Marguerite Yourcenar, nous nous sommes proposé de suivre deux axes d’investigation : d’un côté, l’écriture de l’histoire, qui s’avère être indissolublement liée à une vision mythique du monde ; et de l’autre, l’écriture de soi, celle-ci amplement définie par les conceptions empruntées au bouddhisme qui cherchent à dénoncer l’illusion du « je » et la vacuité substantielle de toute notion identitaire. Ceci dit, nous avons tâché de montrer que l’écriture autobiographique de notre auteur devient amplement problématisée pour être muée enfin en une écriture hétérobiographique. De même, nous avons essayé de dégager une certaine réversibilité de thèmes et de procédés narratifs qui est à l’origine de la fluctuation générique des œuvres romanesques de M. Yourcenar / In our paper, we suggest two planes of the examination of Marguerite Yourcenar’s major novels: on the one hand, her novels are seen as a form of a narrative indistinguishably associated with a mythic vision of the world; on the other hand, they are seen as the writing of the self, utterly defined by the concepts based on Buddhism that denounce the illusion of ‘’I’’ and substantially leave out the notion of identity. Having stated this, we endeavor to show that the autobiographical writing of the author in question becomes greatly problematized as it is being misinterpreted as a heterobiographic piece of writing. We have also tried to clear out some uncertainties about themes and narrative procedures which are the basis of generic fluctuations of Marguerite Yourcenar’s novels

O complexo Drosophila buzzatii (grupo repleta) compreende 13 espécies, divididas em três clusters, de acordo com o bandeamento observado nos cromossomos politênicos: cluster D. stalkeri, incluindo D. richardsoni e D. stalkeri, restrito às ilhas do Caribe e Flórida; cluster D. martensis, incluindo D. martensis, D. uniseta, D. venezolana e D. starmeri, encontrado em áreas desérticas da Colômbia e Venezuela; e cluster D. buzzatii, incluindo D. buzzatii, D. koepferae, D. antonietae, D. serido, D. gouveai, D. borborema e D. seriema, habitando regiões sazonalmente secas ao longo da diagonal de vegetação aberta da América do Sul. O presente estudo teve como objetivo inferir as relações filogenéticas entre as espécies do complexo D. buzzatii, dando ênfase ao cluster D. buzzatii, por meio de análises multilocus de genes mitocondriais (COI e COII) e nucleares (EF-1F1, transformer e period). Nas hipóteses filogenéticas estabelecidas, as espécies do complexo D. buzzatii constituíram um grupo monofilético, composto por dois subgrupos monofiléticos, os clusters D. martensis e D. buzzatii, e um parafilético, o cluster D. stalkeri. As relações de parentesco entre as espécies do cluster D. buzzatii foram estabelecidas. Drosophila buzzatii ocupou a posição mais basal dentro do cluster D. buzzatii, estando proximamente relacionada à espécie D. koepferae. Drosophila antonietae ocupou uma posição intermediária em relação às espécies D. koepferae e D. serido, que representa o táxon irmão do ramo formado por D. gouveai, D. borborema e D. seriema, com D. gouveai ocupando uma posição mais basal em relação às espécies irmãs D. borborema e D. seriema. Foi detectada seleção purificadora como a principal força dirigindo a evolução dos genes nucleares transformer e period, para as espécies do complexo D. buzzatii. O gene mitocondrial COI, por sua vez, foi utilizado para estimar os tempos de divergência para as espécies do cluster D. buzzatii, revelando que o processo de diversificação do grupo iniciou-se no período Plioceno, provavelmente em decorrência de eventos de vicariância associados à elevação dos Andes, sendo também influenciado pelo avanço e retração da vegetação xerófita, nas flutuações climáticas do Pleistoceno. / Drosophila buzzatii complex (repleta group) consists of 13 species, divided into three clusters according to the banding seen in polytene chromosomes: D. stalkeri cluster, including D. richardsoni and D. stalkeri, restricted to the Caribbean Islands and Florida; D. martensis cluster, including D. martensis, D. uniseta, D. venezuelana and D. starmeri, found in desert areas of Colombia and Venezuela, and D. buzzatii cluster, including D. buzzatii, D. koepferae, D. antonietae, D.gouveai, D. borborema and D. seriema, that inhabit seasonally dry regions along the open vegetation diagonal in South America. This study aimed to infer the phylogenetic relationships among the D. buzzatii species complex, emphasizing the D. buzzatii cluster, by multilocus analysis of mitochondrial (COI and COII) and nuclear (EF-1F1, transformer and period) genes. In established phylogenetic hypotheises, the species of the D. buzzatii complex formed a monophyletic group, composed of two monophyletic subgroups, the D. martensis and D. buzzatii clusters, and a paraphyletic one, the D. stalkeri cluster. The relationships among the D. buzzatii species cluster were established. Drosophila buzzatii occupied the most basal position within the D. buzzatii cluster and is closely related to D. koepferae. D. antonietae occupied an intermediate position in relation to the D. koepferae and D. serido species. D. serido represents the sister taxon of the branch formed by the D. gouveai, D. borborema and D. seriema species, with D. gouveai occupying a basal position in relation to the sister species D. borborema and D. seriema. It was detected that purifying selection is the main force driving the evolution of transformer and period nuclear genes for the species of the D. buzzatii complex. The divergence time of the D. buzzatii species cluster was estimated by the COI gene analysis, revealing that the process of diversification of the group began in the Pliocene period, probably due to vicariant events associated with the uplift phase of the Andes, and it was also influenced by the advance and retraction of xerophytic vegetation in Pleistocene climatic fluctuations.
