Material design for OLED lighting applications: Towards a shared computational and photophysical revelation of thermally activated delayed fluorescence

As the third generation of luminescent materials, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)-type compounds have great potential as emitter molecules in OLEDs allowing for electro-fluorescence with 100 % internal quantum efficiency. For organic electronics, the general wide range of applications from OLEDs, bio-fluorescence imaging to sensor technologies and photonic energy storages roots on the enormous variety of organic materials. Especially in the field of metal- free aromatic designs, the range of possible materials showing diverse triplet harvesting effects is immense, making material development a highly complex task. Firstly, initial efforts in the understanding of the basic concepts behind TADF will be highlighted. A rational design strategy for TADF materials will be illustrated on an innovative material series based on phenylcarbazoles. A reasonable branch of isomers are theoretically constructed and slight stoichiometric modifications are performed to understand how molecular structure and intramolecular steric hindrance affects reverse intersystem crossing (RISC), while simultaneously revealing the strategy for deep blue TADF. The rational design of a bluish green TADF material called 5CzCF3Ph providing CIEy ≤ 0.4 is demonstrated, enabling peak EQE values of 12.1 % with a promising LT50 of 2 hrs at 500 cd∙m-2. Subsequently, the photophysics of five newly designed trimeric donor (D)-acceptor (A)-donor (D) type material compounds, analogue concepts to archetypical TADF designs, highlight the importance of intramolecular electronic couplings between adjacent triplet states for adiabatically-driven TADF, revealing the mechanism of local type triplet state perturbations on 3CT states. The most promising candidate (DMAC-PTO-DMAC) is disclosed and in turn optimized to meet required conditions for deep blue TADF emission. Ultimately, a deep blue luminescent material called isoDMAC-PTO is developed, featuring CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.14) with an overall quantum yield of (86.4 ± 0.5) %. The focus switches to the fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanism giving rise to TADF in small molecules, leaving the scope of deep blue emission. While investigating the photophysical properties of a synthesized donor (D)-acceptor (A) type thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter named methyl 2-(9,9-dimethylacridin-10-yl)benzoate (DMAC-MB), it is possible to identify the excited state dynamics mediating the spin-flip process and hence the reutilization of non-radiative triplet states allowing for an internal quantum efficiency approaching unity. As experimentally observed by detailed temperature- and time-dependent transient photoluminescence (PL) measurements and consolidated by comprehensive quantum-chemical considerations, excited state configuration interaction by non-adiabatic couplings are anticipated as key property behind triplet up-conversion in the vicinity of conical intersections, contributing to recent research facing the exciton management within the auspicious field of TADF. For the first time, this thesis reports that even a TADF-silent molecule can be converted into efficient TADF systems by increasing the donor π- conjugation length through polymerization of the building block itself. With a total photoluminescence quantum yield up to 71 %, comprehensible research illustrates an efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence polymer P1, based solely on non-TADF chromophores represented by a model compound 2 (PLQY of 3 % at RT). Finally, as predicted by TDDFT calculations and shown for the first time in the aspiring field of TADF, a thermally activated delayed fluorescence polymer based on a merely radiative, solely phosphorescent repeating unit is demonstrated. Intramolecular π-conjugation is exploited to trigger the charge-transfer excited state energy, revealing a general design tool to provoke TADF, reserved in particular for polymers. While the introduced twisted methyl 2-(9,9-dimethylacridin-10-yl) benzoate (DMAC-MB) reveals efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), a modified analogue 9,9-Dimethyl-5H,9H-quinolino[3,2,1-de]acridin-5-one (DMAC-ACR) shows emerging room temperature phosphorescence (RTP). As for TADF, intramolecular non-adiabatic couplings are unlocked as key feature actuating persistent RTP, linking photophysical analogies between TADF and RTP to structural self-similarities. Last but not least, degradation processes in TADF materials will be addressed. A correlation between theoretically calculated bond-dissociation energies (BDEs) and phenomenological observations reveals that low BDEs, in particular along pronounced charge-transfer bonds, ultimately lead to irreversible TADF material degradation induced by bi-molecular processes comprising TPQ as well as TTA. Finally, this thesis reveals the photophysics of 24 newly designed, synthesized and characterized TADF materials and demonstrates a fundamentally new approach for RTP, based on structural analogues to TADF. Far reaching design principles as conjugation induced TADF in polymers, as well as new design strategies selectively incorporating virbonic couplings yield device performances comprising LT50 of 2 hrs at 500 cd∙m-2 and targeted deep blue emission with CIE (0.16, 0.14). While lighting the way for TADF as future luminescent OLED materials, intrinsic material instabilities due to low bond-dissociation energies are disclosed as key-issues for tomorrows research.

Environmental System-of-Systems Engineering for integrated Nexus design - Developing participatory approaches to design decision making processes in complex human-nature-technology systems

In this thesis, a conceptual framework and related methodological approaches for complex system design are developed and tested. The approaches are based on insights from the fields of Systems Engineering (SE) and System-of-Systems Engineering (SoSE), as well as Natural Resources Management (NRM). The focus of this thesis is on: 1) the development of the System-of-Systems Design Framework “FRESCO”, 2) the development of a methodological framework for participatory systems design, 3) the application of the framework in two case studies, and 4) the development of an evaluation scheme to qualitatively measure the effectiveness of the methodological framework. The overall objectives of this doctoral dissertation are to highlight synergies between SE and NRM and to develop a methodological framework for designing decision making processes in a human-nature-technology context. The complexity of coupled and complex adaptive systems (CAS) such as the Water-Energy-Food Nexus (WEF-Nexus) and sustainability strategies, influences the design of decision-making processes and strategy building. Integrated process design which is promoted by the developed frameworks can assist in such tasks on an urban, regional, and national level.

Behavioral Economics of Agri-Environmental Policies

Modern agriculture is causing a wide range of environmental problems. By regulating the agricultural sector, human societies try to find a balance between enabling the production of food and public goods and preventing negative consequences for the environment. In the European Union this is mainly achieved through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Since many of the environmental indicators are still showing negative trends, an ongoing evaluation and adaptation of the policy instruments included in the CAP is asked for. At the same time, the field of policy evaluation is more and more incorporating a behavioral economic perspective on human behavior, one that deviates from the homo oeconomicus model that has long dominated research in this area. This thesis presents a study on “Behavioral Economics of Agri-Environmental Policies” by combining themes from agricultural and environmental economics with methods and perspectives from behavioral and experimental economics. It thereby contributes to the emerging field of behavioral agricultural economics. Specifically, it aims to shed light on the behavioral drivers of pro-environmental decisions of farmers and how these insights can be used to evaluate and adapt the CAP. With a lab-in-the-field experiment with farmers from Lower Saxony in Germany, an influence of the framing of the farmers’ societal role, their self-identity, as well as control aversion and feelings of warm glow on farmers’ behavior was uncovered. From a policy perspective, the results of this thesis provide a case for the continued use of both mandatory and voluntary policy instruments. Furthermore, with a Principal Components and Cluster Analysis, a multi-facetted picture of different farmer self-identities prevalent in the sample population was revealed. Based on a literature review, the thesis also provides an analysis of how behaviorally-informed interventions might increase the environmental performance of the CAP in the future.

Adaptive Eyes: Driver Distraction and Inattention PreventionThrough Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Behaviour-Based Safety

Technology pervades our daily living, and is increasingly integrated into the vehicle – directly affecting driving. On the one hand technology such as cell phones provoke driver distraction and inattention, whereas, on the other hand, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) support the driver in the driving task. The question is, can a driver successfully adapt to the ever growing technological advancements? Thus, this thesis aimed at improving safe driver behaviour by understanding the underlying psychological mechanisms that influence behavioural change. Previous research on ADAS and human attention was reviewed in the context of driver behavioural adaptation. Empirical data from multiple data sources such as driving performance data, visual behaviour data, video footage, and subjective data were analyzed to evaluate two ADAS (a brake-capacity forward collision warning system, B-FCW, and a Visual Distraction Alert System, VDA-System). Results from a field operational test (EuroFOT) showed that brake-capacity forward collision warnings lead to immediate attention allocation toward the roadway and drivers hit the brake, yet change their initial response later on by directing their eyes toward the warning source in the instrument cluster. A similar phenomenon of drivers changing initial behaviour was found in a driving simulator study assessing a Visual Distraction Alert System. Analysis showed that a Visual Distraction Alert System successfully assists drivers in redirecting attention to the relevant aspects of the driving task and significantly improves driving performance. The effects are discussed with regard to behavioural adaptation, calibration and system acceptance. Based on these findings a novel assessment for human-machine-interaction (HMI) of ADAS was introduced. Based on the contribution of this thesis and previous best-practices, a holistic safety management model on accident prevention strategies (before, during and after driving) was developed. The DO-IT BEST Feedback Model is a comprehensive feedback strategy including driver feedback at various time scales and therefore is expected to provide an added benefit for distraction and inattention prevention. The central contributions of this work are to advance research in the field of traffic psychology in the context of attention allocation strategies, and to improve the ability to design future safety systems with the human factor in focus. The thesis consists of the introduction of the conducted research, six publications in full text and a comprehensive conclusion of the publications. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist der Erkenntnisgewinn zur Verbesserung des Fahrverhaltens indem der Verhaltensänderungen zugrunde liegende psychologische Mechanismen untersucht werden. Eine Vielzahl an Literatur zu Fahrerassistenzsystemen und Aufmerksamkeitsverteilung wurde vor dem Hintergrund von Verhaltensanpassung der Fahrer recherchiert. Daten mehrerer empirischer Quellen, z. B. Fahrverhalten, Blickbewegungen, Videomitschnitte und subjektive Daten dienten zur Datenauswertung zweier Fahrerassistenzsysteme. Im Rahmen einer Feldstudie zeigte sich, dass Bremskapazitäts-Kollisionswarnungen zur sofortigen visuellen Aufmerksamkeitsverteilung zur Fahrbahn und zum Bremsen führen, Fahrer allerdings ihre Reaktion anpassen indem sie zur Warnanzeige im Kombinationsinstrument schauen. Ein anderes Phänomen der Verhaltensanpassung wurde in einer Fahrsimulatorstudie zur Untersuchung eines Ablenkungswarnsystems, das dabei hilft die Blicke von Autofahrern stets auf die Straße zu lenken, gefunden. Diese Ergebnisse weisen nach, dass solch ein System unterstützt achtsamer zu sein und sicherer zu fahren. Die vorliegenden Befunde wurden im Zusammenhang zu Vorbefunden zur Verhaltensanpassung zu Fahrerassistenzsystemen, Fahrerkalibrierung und Akzeptanz von Technik diskutiert. Basierend auf den gewonnenen Erkenntnissen wurde ein neues Vorgehen zur Untersuchung von Mensch- Maschine-Interaktion eingeführt. Aufbauend auf den Resultaten der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde ein ganzheitliches Modell zur Fahrsicherheit und -management, das DO-IT BEST Feedback Modell, entwickelt. Das Modell bezieht sich auf multitemporale Fahrer-Feedbackstrategien und soll somit einen entscheidenen Beitrag zur Verkehrssicherheit und dem Umgang mit Fahrerunaufmerksamkeit leisten. Human ecological analysis of land and forest use by the Hmong people for harmonising with the governmental reforestation program in Vietnam

In parallel with land devolution, the Government of Vietnam has launched reforestation programs aiming to increase the forest cover of the country and to improve the living of local population. In this context, conflicts between the state and local people over land and forest have been entailed or even intensified. To be successful, restoration must „fit‟ with ongoing local patterns of land and forest use. In the uplands of Vietnam, it is recognised that understanding of the current land and forest use by ethnic minority groups is crucial for objective oriented development of land and forest management. However, such understanding is lacking to a wide extent. This research looks into the current land and forest use by the Hmong people and tries to elaborate scenario for harmonising the governmental reforestation program with local patterns of land and forest use. The conceptual framework of the research is adapted from the Human Ecosystem Model (Machlis et al., 1997). For this study, both case study and survey are conducted. Three Hmong villages considered as three cases are selected based on predetermined criteria. In each of the selected villages, a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods, including Rapid Rural Appraisal, Land Use Inventory, Forest Inventory and Household Survey, is employed to capture the required data sets. The study results show the current patterns of land and forest use by the Hmong people in their village territories for their subsistence. Land use is virtually shaped by the physical attributes of the land and closely related to elements of the critical resources and the social system at the village, such as population, production tools, cropping seasons, wealth and knowledge. There are also close links between tree/forest use and the elements of the critical resources and the social system at the village, such as extraction tools, belief in Gods, extracting seasons, gender and local knowledge. Furthermore, following cultural traditions, the uses of forests customarily claimed either by individual households or by individual clans or by the village as a whole are strictly regulated by the system of customary tenure, customary and locally developed rules, and traditional and village institutions rather than the system of formal tenure, rules and institutions. However, the informal system has not been officially recognised by the state yet. The governmental reforestation project has been followed top-down approach, not taking into account the local reality. The project has brought about no tangible benefits to the villagers in terms of cash, forest products and others. Instead, conflicts between the state institutions and the villagers over land and forest have arisen. Lack of the villagers‟ participation in planning and decision-making concerning the project is the main reason explaining the conflict situations. It is posited that participatory planning of the project at village level can help to harmonise the project with local pattern of land and forest use. The human ecosystem model serves to integrate data related to concerned variables, and has been used as the basis for the elaboration of the harmonising scenario. Besides the involvement of the state/state institutions and the villagers/village institutions, involvement of a mediator as a third party seems to be helpful to harmonise the contrary positions of the two principle parties with regard to the use and management of land and forest resources. / Im Zuge der Dezentralisierung für den Bereich der Landnutzung hat die Regierung Vietnams Programme zur Wiederaufforstung initiiert, die auf Erweiterung der Waldbedeckung und Verbesserung des Lebens lokaler dörflicher Bevölkerung abzielen. In diesem Zusammenhang traten jedoch Konflikte zwischen Staat und lokaler Bevölkerung zu Tage oder bestehende Konfliktsituationen haben sich verstärkt. Programme der Wiederbegründung von Wald können nur erfolgreich sein, wenn sie mit aktuellen lokalen Mustern der Land- und Waldnutzung abgestimmt sind. In den Berggebieten Vietnams ist das Verständnis der Land- und Waldnutzung durch ethnische Minderheiten von zentraler Bedeutung für die zielorientierte Entwicklung der Bewirtschaftung von Land und Wald. Bisher fehlt das entsprechende Verständnis weitgehend. Vorliegende Forschung erkundet die derzeitige Land- und Waldnutzung der ethnischen Gruppe der Hmong. Ein Szenario zur Harmonisierung des staatlichen Aufforstungsprogramms mit lokaler Land- und Waldnutzung wird erarbeitet. Das konzeptionelle Vorgehen folgt dem Human Ecosystem Model (HEM) nach Machlis et al. (1997). Die Forschung umfasst Fallstudie und Survey. Drei Hmong-Dörfer repräsentieren drei Fallstudien, die auf der Grundlage vorbestimmter Kriterien ausgewählt wurden. In jedem der Dörfer wurden die erforderlichen Datensätze durch ein Mix von qualitativen und quantitativen Methoden wie Rapid Rural Appraisal, Landnutzungsinventur, Waldinventur und Befragung der Haushalte erhoben. Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen die derzeitigen Muster von Land- und Waldnutzung der Hmong in den Territorien ihrer Dörfer mit Orientierung auf Sicherung des Lebens. Die Landnutzung ist wesentlich bestimmt durch die natürlichen Eigenschaften des Landes und eng gebunden an Elemente der „kritischen Ressourcen“ und des „sozialen Systems“ auf Dorfebene wie Demografie, Geräte der Produktion, Wachstumsperioden, Wohlstand und Wissen. Gleiches gilt für die Waldnutzung mit dem Beziehungsgefüge zwischen Nutzung und Elementen der „kritischen Ressourcen“ sowie des „sozialen Systems“ im Dorf wie Gerät für die Ernte, Glaube an Gottheiten, Erntezeiträume, Geschlechter und lokales Wissen. Im Weiteren erfolgt die Waldnutzung vor allem auf traditioneller Grundlage durch Haushalte, Clans oder Dorfgemeinschaften entsprechend strikter Regelung im Rahmen des Gewohnheitsrechts, des traditionellen Besitzes, traditioneller und lokal entwickelter Regeln, traditioneller und anderer dörflicher Institutionen im Vergleich zu formalem Besitz, formalen Regeln und Institutionen. Allerdings ist das informelle System staatlich bis jetzt nicht anerkannt. Das staatliche Wiederaufforstungsprojekt folgt dem typischen top-down Verfahren ohne Beachtung der lokalen Realität. Das Projekt erbrachte keine nennneswerten Vorteile für die Dorfbewohner in Form von Geld, Waldprodukten o. a. Im Gegenteil, es haben sich Konflikte zwischen den staatlichen Institutionen und den Dorfbewohnern um Land und Wald ergeben. Fehlende lokale Beteiligung an Projektplanung und Entscheidungsfindung erklären die Konfliktsituation. Es ist zu schlussfolgern, dass partizipative Planung auf Dorfebene helfen kann, das Projekt mit den lokalen Bedingungen von Land- und Waldnutzung zu harmonisieren. Das Human Ecosystem Model diente dazu, relevante Variable zu integrieren und wurde als Grundlage für die Erarbeitung des Szenarios zur Harmonisierung genutzt. Neben dem Staat und den Dörfern wird die Beteiligung eines Mediatoren als dritter Partei für die Harmoniserung der gegensätzlichen Positionen der zwei wichtigen Interessengruppen zu Nutzung und Management von Land- und Waldressourcen als nützlich erachtet.

Despite the authority that time holds in the discipline of studying events of the past, not all historians or writers analyzing the past use time to study history—some use space, including writers who write about and interact with an urban topography. The space used by these writers is built space, as well as inhabited and practiced "lived" space. Whereas time provides a transparent overview of history, the urban spaces tend to be opaque. Clarifying history through urban space is additionally troublesome, because built space and its attached memories are visibly forgotten and ignored as time advances. Despite the difficulties of working with and understanding urban space, some intellectuals specifically choose space as a tool of discernment of history. For these individuals, understanding history becomes an investigation of sensing, feeling, and divining human activity out of the mass of artifacts and used spaces. Hermine Cloeter is one such urban forensic historian.

Phase-field modeling of brittle fracture along the thickness direction of plates and shells

The prediction of fracture in thin-walled structures is decisive for a wide range of applications. Modeling methods such as the phase-field method usually consider cracks to be constant over the thickness which, especially in load cases involving bending, is an imperfect approximation. In this contribution, fracture phenomena along the thickness direction of structural elements (plates or shells) are addressed with a phase-field modeling approach. For this purpose, a new, so called “mixed-dimensional” model is introduced, which combines structural elements representing the displacement field in the two-dimensional shell midsurface with continuum elements describing a crack phase-field in the three-dimensional solid space. The proposed model uses two separate finite element discretizations, where the transfer of variables between the coupled twoand three-dimensional fields is performed at the integration points which in turn need to have corresponding geometric locations. The governing equations of the proposed mixed-dimensional model are deduced in a consistent manner from a total energy functional with them also being compared to existing standard models. The resulting model has the advantage of a reduced computational effort due to the structural elements while still being able to accurately model arbitrary through-thickness crack evolutions as well as partly along the thickness broken shells due to the continuum elements. Amongst others, the higher accuracy aswell as the numerical efficiency of the proposed model are tested and validated by comparing simulation results of the new model to those obtained by standard models using numerous representative examples.

In dieser Arbeit wird ein ähnlich Ansatz verwendet, mit Hilfe dessen grundlegende Verhaltenskomponenten identifiziert werden sollen, die eine autonome Aneignung motorischer und kognitive Fähigkeiten durch die Roboter ermöglichen könnten. Diese Arbeit untersucht die sensomotorische Interaktion als Mittel zur Schaffung von Erfahrungen. Es werden Experimente zu explorative Verhaltensweisen zur Aneigung von Arbewegungen, der Werkzeugnutzung und von interaktiven Fähigkeiten vorgestellt. In diesem Rahmen wird auch die Entwicklung sozialer Fähigkeiten, insbesondere durch joint attention, behandelt. Dabei werden zwei Vorraussetzugen zu joint attention untersucht: Zeigegesten und Erkennung von visueller Salienz. Dabei wurde das Framework der interen Modelle für die Darstellung von sensomotorischen Erfahrungen angewendet. Insbesondere wurden inverse und Vorwärtsmodelle mit unterschiedlichen Konfigurationen am sensorischen und motorischen Daten, die vom Roboter durch exploratives Verhalten, durch Beobachtung menschliche Vorführern, oder durch kinästhetisches Lehren erzeugt wurden geschult. Die Entscheidung zu Gunsten dieses Framework wurde getroffen, da es in der Lage ist, sensomotorische Zyklen zu simulieren. Diese Arbeit untersucht, wie grundlegende kognitive Fähigkeiten in einen humanoiden Roboter unter Berücksichtigung sensorischer und motorischer Erfahrungen implementiert werden können. Insbesondere wurden interne Simulationsprozesse für die Implementierung von Kognitivenfahigkeiten wie die Aktionsauswahl, die Werkzeugnutzung, die Verhaltenserkennung und die Self-Other distinction, eingesetzt. / State-of-the-art robots are still not properly able to learn from, adapt to, react to unexpected circumstances, and to autonomously and safely operate in uncertain environments. Researchers in developmental robotics address these issues by building artificial systems capable of acquiring motor and cognitive capabilities by interacting with their environment, inspired by human development. This thesis adopts a similar approach in finding some of those basic behavioural components that may allow for the autonomous development of sensorimotor and social skills in robots. Here, sensorimotor interactions are investigated as a mean for the acquisition of experience. Experiments on exploration behaviours for the acquisition of arm movements, tool-use and interactive capabilities are presented. The development of social skills is also addressed, in particular of joint attention, the capability to share the focus of attention between individuals. Two prerequisites of joint attention are investigated: imperative pointing gestures and visual saliency detection. The established framework of the internal models is adopted for coding sensorimotor experience in robots. In particular, inverse and forward models are trained with different configurations of low-level sensory and motor data generated by the robot through exploration behaviours, or observed by human demonstrator, or acquired through kinaesthetic teaching. The internal models framework allows the generation of simulations of sensorimotor cycles. This thesis investigates also how basic cognitive skills can be implemented in a humanoid robot by allowing it to recreate the perceptual and motor experience gathered in past interactions with the external world. In particular, simulation processes are used as a basis for implementing cognitive skills such as action selection, tool-use, behaviour recognition and self-other distinction.

Darstellendes Spiel auf Englisch als Perspektive für den bilingualen Sachfachunterricht

Deutschlandweit nehmen die Schulen zahlenmäßig von Jahr zu Jahr zu, die ein bilinguales Angebot z.B. als Zweig oder als Modul in ihr Unterrichtsprogramm aufnehmen. Die meisten Angebote sind in englischer Sprache, aber auch andere – vor allem europäische Sprachen – spielen eine Rolle. Mittlerweile gibt es bilinguale Angebote in fast allen Fächern, wobei die gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen Fächer wie z.B. Geschichte und Geographie nach wie vor dominieren. Überraschenderweise spielt das Fach Darstellendes Spiel in der Diskussion um potenziell geeignete bilinguale Fächer weder in der Theorie noch in der Praxis eine nennenswerte Rolle. Mit der Wahl dieses Themas für die vorliegende Dissertationsschrift wird der bilinguale Sachfachunterricht Darstellendes Spiel erstmals in das Blickfeld der Forschung gerückt. Damit werden sowohl dem Sachfach als auch dem bilingualen Unterricht neue Perspektiven eröffnet. In der vorliegenden Dissertation wird folgenden übergeordneten Fragestellungen nachgegangen: Wie kann das bilinguale Sachfach Darstellendes Spiel für die Sekundarstufen I und II der allgemeinbildenden Schulen konzipiert werden? Worin liegt das besondere Potenzial des bilingualen Sachfachunterrichts Darstellendes Spiel? Welches sind seine spezifischen Merkmale? Dabei soll aufgezeigt werden, wo und in welchem Maße der Einsatz der Fremdsprache die sachfachliche Arbeit positiv oder negativ beeinflusst bzw. welche Auswirkungen der Unterricht im Sachfach auf den Fremdsprachenerwerb hat. Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen wurde eine Auswahl existierender Ansätze zum szenischen Spiel im Fremdsprachunterricht unter Einbeziehung allgemeiner Überlegungen zur Funktion von Theaterspiel analysiert und zu den Besonderheiten des bilingualen Sachfachunterrichts in Beziehung gesetzt. Das auf dieser Basis erstellte Konzept wird in seinen vielfältigen Potenzialen analysiert und ausgelotet und mit Hilfe eines Praxisbeispiels in englischer Sprache veranschaulicht. / The number of schools in Germany which offer to teach one or more subjects in a foreign language (content and language integrated learning = CLIL) is still growing. The subjects often chosen for this type of instruction are Geography and History. Other subjects are less frequently taught in a foreign language. The courses vary in length (a number of school years or only some weeks). Drama is very rarely chosen as a CLIL-subject, and there are hardly any reports of successful teaching of or scientific literature about CLIL Drama. This thesis puts CLIL Drama for the first time in the centre of scientific research, thus opening new prospects for Drama and CLIL. The main questions this thesis attempts to answer are the following: What could a concept for CLIL Drama look like for pupils at state schools aged between 13 and 18? How can the potential value added of CLIL Drama be described? What are its key features? This thesis also points to the advantages and disadvantages of CLIL Drama. In the search for an answer to the above questions the author has analysed existing approaches to teaching a foreign language (mainly English, but also German and French) with the help of drama, including the current German discussion about bilingual teaching at state schools. Furthermore, the author presents an alternative look into what theatre is about in this context. On the basis of the results of her research the author draws up a broad concept for CLIL Drama at German secondary schools. The thesis concludes with an illustration of a CLIL Drama project (in English) launched among 14-year-olds at a German gymnasium.
