The aim of this study was to find the relationships between leadership style, organisational culture and organisational performance and subsequently develop a conceptual framework for enhancing Organisational Performance through the linkage between Leadership style and Organisational Culture in the public sector, in the South African Police Service (SAPS). Many of the previous studies have explored the direct relationship between specific culture domains and a specific performance measure and researchers have paid attention to mediators and moderators of the link between organisational culture and performance only in private sectors. According to the literature, leadership style and organisational culture have been independently linked to organisational performance (Ogbonna & Harris, 2000; Denison & Mishra, 1995; Xenikou & Simosi, 2006; Cameron & Quinn, 2011). All these authors focused on the effect of organisational culture and leadership style on organisational performance in the private sector.
In order to achieve the research aim and objectives extensive an intensive literature review of the relevant and current literature was done. The mixed methods approach was applied. Data was collected by the use of self-administered questionnaires for the quantitative data and in-depth interviews and observations for the qualitative data. Regression analysis was used to investigate the relationships between the key study variables and more importantly the mediating and moderating effect on the effect of leadership style on organisational performance.
The results of this study indicated that the transformational leadership style does not have a direct effect on organisational performance but rather through organisational culture as a mediating and moderating variable. It was also found that transformational leadership style and organisational culture affect each other. The implication was that leaders should cultivate an organisational culture which is conducive to work in order to enhance organisational performance. / Business Management / D.B.L.

This study focuses on the role of school managers in addressing challenges associated with the
implementation of continuous assessment (CASS) in the Further Education and Training (FET)
band in Mopani District. It furthermore investigates to what degree school managers in the
district engage in performing the “traditional” leadership and management roles which create a
conducive atmosphere for the implementation of CASS.
A thorough literature review provides an understanding of the emerging trends and challenges in
the implementation of CASS internationally. Most of these challenges are analogous with those
constraining the implementation of CASS in Mopani District. The data were collected by means
of semi-structured interviews and questionnaires from purposively sampled district educators and
school management teams (SMTs) who came from randomly selected schools. The findings
enumerated the insufficient training for school managers and infrequency of performing
“traditional” leadership and management roles as some of the factors hampering the

Market orientation and business performance : an empirical study of the banking sector in EthiopiaMulugeta Gebre-Medhin Kassie 09 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between market orientation and business performance mediated by marketing resources and moderated by contextual factors. The study also examined the extent to which the conceptual model was a good fit to the sample data. A quantitative approach was used to test if there was a significant relationship between market orientation, marketing resources, and business performance. For the purpose, a cross-sectional survey was carried out to obtain data pertaining to market orientation, marketing resources, contextual factors and business performance. The unit of analysis of the study was banks consisting of 3 public and 15 private banks. A sample size of 507 consisting of 492 branch managers and 15 top level marketing managers was used in the survey. With a response rate of 87.97%, 446 questionnaires were collected of which 377 were used for data analysis.
A SEM was used to test the extent to which the theoretical model fits the sample data. Mediation analysis was used to test the indirect effect of market orientation on business performance and hierarchical regression analysis was used to test whether the relationship was moderated by market dynamism, competitive intensity, and government regulation. Finally, an independent t – test was used to examine the statistical variations between public and private banks in terms of market orientation, marketing resources, and business performance.
The confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the modified model was fit with the observed data in terms of chi-square and the individual indices. The total effect of market orientation on business performance was moderate with a 0.36 regression coefficient. The indirect effect was high with a 0.91 regression coefficient where complete and inconsistent mediation was found due to suppression effect. The moderation analysis revealed that the interaction effect of market dynamism, competitive intensity, and government regulation was not statistically significant. Finally the result showed that there was a statistically meaningful difference between public and private banks in terms of market orientation, marketing resources, and business performance.

The master’s thesis provides an overview of available neutron sources in terms of neutron yields and energy spectrum of emitted neutrons. Reactions of neutrons with matter, especially neutron scattering and radiation capture, are described. The possibilities neutron neutron detection and spectrometry are also described. The following experiment deals with a design of suitable shielding materials and the analysis of the moderated energy spectrum of neutron flux. The properties of the neutron field were measured using detection by activation. Subsequently, a simulation of the problem was performer in the MCNP program. In the end, the achieved results are compared and evaluated.

A Cross-Cultural Study of Adult Attachment, Social Self-Efficacy, Familismo, and Psychological WellbeingZamudio Leal, Gabriel Mario 08 1900 (has links)
Although Latinos are the largest minority group in the country, research examining how different psychological and cultural variables affect Latino individuals' wellbeing is disproportionately developed and cross-cultural comparison studies are particularly scarce. To address these issues, this dissertation research examined cross-cultural adult attachment-social self-efficacy-psychosocial wellbeing conceptual mediational model while investigating the moderator effects of country membership and familismo on the proposed mediational model using a cross-cultural sample of Mexican and Mexican-American university students. A total of 595 participants, including 360 Mexican students from Mexico and 235 Mexican-American students from the United States completed the research questionnaires. Results indicated that social self-efficacy was a significant mediator for the effects of insecure attachment on life satisfaction and conflict resolution in both cultural groups and for the links between attachment insecurity and depressive symptoms in the Mexican-American group. Additionally, moderated mediation analyses showed that country membership was a significant moderator for the links between attachment avoidance and social self-efficacy when life satisfaction, conflict resolution style, and depressive symptoms were the dependent variables, as well as for the direct link between attachment anxiety and physical health symptoms. Familismo was also found to be a significant moderator for the direct effects of attachment anxiety on physical health symptoms and life satisfaction in both groups. Findings are discussed from the attachment and cross-cultural perspectives. Counseling implications, limitations, and future research directions are offered.

AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION AND CONDITIONAL PROCESS ANALYSIS OF THE ROLE OF CATASTROPHIZING IN THE PAIN—WORKING MEMORY NEXUSPhilip Matthew Procento (8083106) 05 December 2019 (has links)
There is a well-documented bidirectional relationship between pain and
cognitive dysfunction, especially working memory. Despite this extensive body
of research, the pain–working memory relationship is poorly understood. Pain
catastrophizing – exaggerated negative cognitive and emotional responses
towards pain – may contribute to working memory deficits by occupying finite,
shared cognitive resources, but this has yet to be investigated. The present
study sought to clarify the role of pain catastrophizing (assessed as both a
trait-level disposition and state-level process) in working memory dysfunction.
Healthy undergraduate participants were randomized to an ischemic pain or
control task, during which they completed verbal and non-verbal working memory
tests. They also completed measures of state- and trait-level pain
catastrophizing. Mediation analyses indicated that state-level pain
catastrophizing mediated the relationships of pain group to both verbal and
non-verbal working memory, such that participants in the pain group (vs. the
control group) catastrophized more about their pain, which then resulted in
worse verbal and non-verbal working memory performance. In moderated mediation
analyses, trait-level pain catastrophizing moderated this mediation effect for
both verbal and non-verbal working memory. Those participants in the pain group
who reported greater tendency to catastrophize about pain in general exhibited
greater catastrophizing in-the-moment during the pain task, thereby leading to
worse verbal and non-verbal working memory performance. These results provide
evidence for pain catastrophizing as a putative mechanism and moderating factor
of working memory dysfunction in pain. Future research should replicate these
results in chronic pain samples, investigate other potential mechanisms (e.g.,
sleep), and develop interventions to ameliorate cognitive dysfunction by
targeting pain catastrophizing.

PhD (Business Management) / Department of Business Management / Despite the fast pace of development within the mobile commerce industry globally, marketers in developing countries are still lagging in understanding why and how consumers participate in mobile marketing transactions. The literature reporting on mobile marketing transactions’ adoption in a South African context remains largely inconsistent and fragmented as most previous studies are based on the experience of consumers in a non-South African (and nondeveloping country) context. Therefore, this study identifies a literature gap, in that there lacks a sufficient critical mass of studies into the moderating effect of information security on consumer adoption of mobile marketing transactions in South Africa particularly among the youth who have a strong affinity for constant mobile connectivity. Furthermore, confronted with rapid changes in emerging technology, previous models of technology adoption are slowly becoming outmoded. Consequently, this study considered testing a proposed model on the predictive power of marketing-related mobile activity to help improve understanding and prognosis of the adoption of mobile marketing transactions in South Africa. Specifically, in order to render these tests robust, perceived information security was applied as a moderator variable to increase the explanatory power of the model. The objectives set out for this research were measured utilising a single cross-sectional approach, guided by the positivist paradigm. In keeping with the dictates of ensuring the highest levels of reliability and validity, a measuring instrument developed from past studies was used. Using a self-administered questionnaire, data were collected from a sample of 810 students from selected South African universities. Descriptive and multivariate statistical tests including the moderated hierarchical regression analysis were used to analyse data. The implication of the study is that it provides both marketers and policymakers with a set of controllable variables that may be manipulated to promote the adoption of mobile marketing transactions. / NRF

Das interessante Leben von Dr. Georg Kühne ist auf das engste mit der Entwicklung des Deutschen Fernsehfunks, dem Wettbewerbsbestreben zwischen den zwei deutschen Staaten Ost und West um die Vorreiterrolle dieses Mediums im gesamtdeutschen Konflikt zu sehen. Kühne wurde mit Einführung der bisher unüblichen Wettervorhersagen im Fernsehen zum ersten Ansager der täglichen Wetterberichte, im Anschluss an die „Aktuelle Kamera“. Der in Radeberg aufgewachsene Georg Kühne, Schüler am Radeberger Realgymnasium mit Realschule, absolvierte an der Technischen Hochschule Dresden sein Lehrerexamen, promovierte zum Dr. der Technischen Wissenschaften, darauf folgte ein Zusatzstudium zum Meteorologen. Diese Tätigkeit, unterbrochen durch die Kriegsereignisse, wurden ab 1949 in der Zentralen Wetterdienststelle Potsdam fortgesetzt. Hier wurde er zu einem der maßgeblichen Wissenschaftler auf dem Gebiet der Meteorologie, später der Erforschung der Klimatologie, in der DDR. Seine Leistungen führten dazu, dass er zum Leiter der „Zentralen Wetterdienststelle Potsdam“ (ZWD) berufen wurde. Dieses hohe Amt hatte er bis zum Beginn seines Ruhestandes 1975 inne.
