'So much neglected?' : an investigation and re-evaluation of vocal music in Edinburgh 1750-1800

Edwards, Thomas Hayward January 2015 (has links)
This thesis gives a comprehensive account of the vocal music performed in Edinburgh between 1750 and 1800. One of its aims is to highlight the importance of vocal music to a contemporary audience, an area which has hitherto been neglected in investigations into the musical culture of the city in the eighteenth century. It also attempts to place the Edinburgh Musical Society in the wider context of the vibrant concert and musical culture which developed through the second half of the century. The study attempts to demonstrate the importance of singing, not just within concerts, but as an integral part of many other social and cultural aspects of life, including: gentlemen’s clubs, schools, and the city’s churches. The careers of singers, as impresarios and teachers, and the influence they held over prevailing tastes and culture are examined. In addition to discussing the many foreign musicians active in the city this investigation also traces the impact of native born singers and teachers. It calls into question the assertions made by previous studies which suggested the primacy of instrumental music over vocal music and it attempts to demonstrate that the interest in, consumption of, and participation in vocal music grew over the course of the century. It also attempts to show that vocal music became a dominant influence following the demise of the Musical Society. The information contained in this account has been drawn from previously neglected newspapers and other archival sources, such as diaries, personal letters, the archives of the Musical Society preserved by Gilbert Innes, the Sederunt Books of the Musical Society, the repertoire of the Harmonical Society and published works on music, culture and history. The repertory itself has also been closely examined. By means of this work it has been possible to examine and expand the whole spectrum of musical life in the Scottish capital and thus establish the thriving vocal musical culture which existed at the time.

Qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde de mulheres grávidas com sintomas depressivos / Health related quality of life of pregnant women with depressive symptoms

Lima, Marlise de Oliveira Pimentel 11 February 2011 (has links)
The aims of the present study were to analyze the influence of depressive symptoms on the health related quality of life (HRQOL) perceived by low risk pregnant women and at postpartum and verify the socioeconomic and obstetric factors associated with the quality of life and depressive symptoms. This is a longitudinal study and it was conducted with 313 pregnant women enrolled in 11 Basic Health Units of the southern area of São Paulo City, SP. The participants were followed up at their 20th, 28th, 36th weeks of gestation and 45 days postpartum, with ± 2 weeks in each periods. Data was collected from July 2008 to March 2010. The final sample of four periods consisted of 132 women. Sociodemographic and obstetric data was obtained by interviewing subjects in the first period and postpartum data in the fourth period. For the assessment of depressive symptoms, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used and to assess the health related quality of life (HRQOL), the questionnaire Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (MOS-SF36), which were self-administered in four stages. The study was approved by the Ethics in Research Committee nº 154/08-CEP/SMS. The mean scores of the domains of MOS-SF36 presented decline over the gestation with postpartum recovery, except in General (Health) and Mental Health, with a significant difference in Physical Functioning (p<0,000), Role Limitation due to Physical Problems (p=0,001), Bodily Pain (p<0,001) and Vitality (p=0,002). The proportion of pregnant women with depressive symptoms was 29.5% at 20th, 24.2% at 28th, 24.5% at 36th weeks of gestation and 33.6% at 45 days postpartum. There was a significant inverse correlation among all domains of the MOS-SF36 and the EPDS, with Spearman coefficients range of 0.234 to 0.785. At the four periods, the mean scores of the domains showed significant differences between pregnant subjects with or without depressive symptoms except Bodily Pain in the second period and Role Limitation due to Physical Problems in the fourth one. At HRQOL logistic regression the depressive symptoms were a risk factor in all domains, except Role Limitation due to Physical Problems. To depressive symptoms, the associated factors were marital status, years of education and the number of prenatal consultations as protective factors and complaints as a risk factor. The presence of depressive symptoms at pregnancy and postpartum changes the subjective perception of Health related quality of life in low risk pregnant women.

Industrialisation, residential mobility and the changing social morphology of Edinburgh and Perth, c. 1850-1900

Southern, Richard Lloyd Vaughan January 2002 (has links)
The aim of this research is to advance the understanding of the impacts of the industrial revolution on urban space during the period 1850-1900. This was a period of great dynamism with high levels of social and economic change, political radicalism and urban growth that had profound effects on the urban landscape. In contrast to much previous research on Victorian urban space, the case study settlements used are Edinburgh and Perth, Scottish burghs with diverse economies not dominated by a heavy industrial sector. The analysis uses data from a variety of sources including the census, valuation rolls and the Register of Sasines. It also draws insights from structuration theory by examining the spatial outcome of various processes in terms of the reflexive relationship between structural factors such as class and capitalism and the residential movements of individuals (agents). Three scales of analysis are used. Thus, meso-scale socio-spatial change is seen as affected by both macro-scale structures and micro-scale actions of agents. By constructing a series of maps and measures of the distribution of social groups at various times over the half century, the thesis demonstrates that socio-spatial differentiation increased markedly over the period. The processes driving this socio-spatial change are identified as the operations of the housing market, structured feeling and mobility. The detailed roles of each is examined. Together, it is argued these are the modalities which link structures and agents and are thus the proximate determinants of socio-spatial change.

Inquiry and the social : an empirical study of the construction of knowledge in architectural designing

Berthold, Henning Alexander January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is a study of inquiry. Drawing upon the work of American pragmatist John Dewey, this work seeks to contribute to our understanding of the construction of knowledge within the social system of communities of inquiry. The process of inquiry that is traced in this work is one effected in the course of architectural designing. An ethnographically informed study of an architectural masterplan project is used to illustrate Dewey's ideas and how they are played out in design practice. This thesis is understood to correspond with the growing interest of the students of organisational learning and knowledge management in knowledge creation and the underlying social processes. It is further seen as a response to the claim that the key processes of knowledge creation remain largely an enigma. Agreement has been established with Dewey that knowledge is not just an end in itself but a form of action, a medium of change and social transformation. The formation of knowledge, however, within the operation of inquiry is not a matter that “naturally” runs its course. The process of inquiry as studied both in theory and practice has shown just how much its results, which by definition constitute knowledge, are shaped by the institution and control of a problem. A problem is a social construct and the product of the purposeful selection and arrangement of pieces of information. Inquiry is therefore considered a process of controlled knowledge formation. That which counts as knowledge in the realm of social phenomena has been shown to be a matter not so much of agreement between actions and their consequences but agreement in terms of intellectual acceptance. What “satisfies” as a solution (such as the final masterplan) has therefore been shown to be not necessarily a question of its logical status.

BVC-sköterskors upplevelser att möta mödrar med symtom på postpartumdepression : En kvalitativ intervjustudie / Child health care nurses experiences to encounting mothers with symptom of postpartum depression : A qualitative interview study

Jern, Frida, Sigfridsson, Uldine January 2016 (has links)
Background:  During pregnancy and after childbirth the woman go through a period that represents a major change in her life and it´s common to experience a wide range of different emotions. The first time after birth, symptoms of serious mental health problems can be triggered, such as depression. Depression in new mothers, known as postpartum depression, has increased in interest since the 1990s in health care, nursing research and among parents.   Aim: The aim of the study was to illustrate Child health care nurses’ experiences of encounting mothers’ with symptoms of postpartum depression.   Method: Qualitative content analysis with inductive approach was used and data were collected through interviews. Eight Child health care nurses’, CHCN, were interviewed.   Results: Four categories emerged from the analysis: establish a good collaboration, provide advice and guidance, to use instruments that facilitate and communicative barriers at work and associated subcategorys.     Conclusion: In order to meet mothers with symptoms of postpartum depression CHCN need to establish a good collaboration. The first home visit was also important to establish a good collaboration between CHCN and mothers. The use of instruments such as EPDS, facilitate the conversation and was an important tool for the CHCN.

Sintomas depressivos em mulheres no pós-parto residentes em um município do sul de Minas Gerais / Depressive symptoms in postpartum women living in a municipality in southern Minas Gerais

Costa, Elisiany Mello 30 November 2012 (has links)
The study objectives were to identify the occurrence of depressive symptoms in postpartum women and the association between depressive symptoms and sociodemographic and obstetric variables. This is a cross-sectional study on 302 women who were between 42 to 56 days after delivery, residents in Lavras (MG). Data were collected from August 2011 to January 2012, through an interview and application of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). The EPDS is a self-assessment to track depression after pregnancy, which contains 10 statements, each item has a score ranging from 0 to 3, reaching a maximum score of 30. We adopted a cutoff 13 points in EPDS, 59.5% sensitivity, 88.4% specificity in the Brazilian population, to detect depressive symptoms. The reliability was assessed by Cronbach\'s Alpha coefficient and the association of depressive symptoms with some maternal variables were analyzed by chi-square. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the School of Nursing, University of São Paulo under Opinion No 1059/2011 and the University Center Lavras. The women had an average of 27.04 (± 6.12) years of age; 49.3% white, mean 10.44 (± 2.12) years of education, 85.8% with partner. The Cronbach\'s Alpha coefficient was 0.85 verified. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 11.9%. There were significant differences in the level of ethnicity (p = 0.032), education (p <0.001), marital status (p <0.001), number of pregnancy (p = 0.004), parity (p <0.001) and resting (p = 0.004) , smoking (p <0.001), drug (p = 0.004); planning pregnancy (p <0.001); acceptance of gestation (p <0.001); desired pregnancy (p <0.001); experience prenatal care (p = 0.007); experience in childbirth (p = 0012); violence before pregnancy (p <0.001); violence during pregnancy (p <0.001); psychological problem before pregnancy (p <0.001); psychological problem during pregnancy (p <0.001); breastfeeding (p = 0.006) and baby with health problems (p <0.001). The prevalence of depressive symptoms (11,9%) in postpartum women in Lavras (MG) is compatible with the national and international literature that refer as 10% to 20%. Knowledge of maternal variables that may influence the occurrence of postpartum depression is critical for the health team can intervene early and appropriate treatment of women.
