Assess Intersectionality & Cultural Competence: Attitude toward Elderly Immigrants

Lee, Youn Mi 03 April 2020 (has links)
Considering the geographical setting of the Southern region of the U.S., which is mostly divided into two races, Black and White, this study is to examine human science-related major undergraduates’ cultural competence and attitude toward the intersectionality group, elderly immigrants. The data, a total of 444 human science related major undergraduates in Mississippi, were collected. Through the principal factor analysis, attitudes toward elderly immigrants were divided into three factors: discrimination, avoidance, and tolerance, and cultural competence was into attitude, awareness, and sensitivity factors. The further related data analysis is to be completed by spring 2020. Through the study, it is expected to increase awareness of the need for culturally competent programs to educate the students on diversity and help to prepare undergraduate students to meet societal demands related to the intersectional minority population in the future.

A comparison between different participants' views on community property. Differences in risk assessment in comparisonto Office Buildings and Rental Housing Properties / En jämförelse mellan olika aktörers syn påsamhällsfastigheter.

Laurén, Erika, Valo, Emilia Alexandrie January 2014 (has links)
The market for community properties is a relatively new market for private investors. Previously, local governments usually owned these properties. The demands for community properties from property companies and institutions have increased over the past 10 years and an increasing number of local governments are selling their properties. One popular type of community property is elderly accommodations. This study aims to provide an overview of the greatest risks concerning elderly accommodations in comparison with office buildings and rental housing properties according to different operators. The study is based on a qualitative approach and information has mainly been obtained through interviews with ten operators. Elderly accommodations are generally viewed upon as a safe segment since they usually have long leases, often with a municipality, which is considered to be a very safe tenant. Investing in such properties is therefore often compared to buying a bond. The view on what is the greatest risk differs between the operators. According to most operators the greatest risk is in the residual value by the end of the lease contract. Yet we have not reached the end of the long contracts since these properties became popular on the market about 10 years ago. The residual value is mostly influenced by the political risk, the location and the alternative use of the property. This differs from office properties that are more dependent on the economic situation and rental residual places that are more dependent on the location than elderly accommodation properties. Research show that there have been changes in what the elderly demand in their living environment. Despite that most operators believe that changes in preferences will not have a substantial impact on the segment and that elderly accommodation properties is a safe product.

THE INVESTIGATION INTO ELDERLY PEOPLE’S INTERNET USAGE

Sun, Li January 2011 (has links)
The Internet has gained increasing popularity in the recent twenty years, and numerous services and products are provided online. However, the inevitable digital divide has differentiated people living in the same society into IT rich and poor. As world population is irreversibly aging, the elderly will be the largest IT inability group because of the digital divide. One information inability is their lack of access and capability to use internet. In China, despite many elderly-aimed ICT projects are carried out, internet prevalence rate among the elderly is lower than in Sweden. Successful online applications or services in western society finally proved total failure in another, which gives the designer and developer a good lesson to learn: to design or provide a kind of application to users across cultures or nations is more than simply interface language translation. Studies on cultural differences provide scholars in ICT field a good reference on how to take cultural issues into product design and applications, to make the applications and services more culture-friendly. Therefore, the research is carried out on elderly internet usage in China in comparison with the situation in Sweden: by comparing the elderly people‟s experiences, perceptions and expectations for the internet in these two countries, differences are analyzed from the perspective of cultural differences and an in-depth analysis of unique problems of Chinese elderly people internet use is given. By comparing China and Sweden, which are defined as countries under absolutely different cultural systems, implications on Chinese elderly people‟s expectations and requirements for internet are proposed.

Upplevelser av fysisk aktivitet under covid-19 : En kvalitativ studie av åldersgruppen 70 år och äldre / Experiences of physical activity during covid-19 : A qualitive study of the age group 70 years and older

Håkansson, Hanna, Johansson, Ellinor January 2021 (has links)
Background: The covid-19-pandemic resulted in an amount of social adaptations in order to minimise the spread of infection, which resulted in new approaches in everyday life that among other things impacted the terms to engage in health behaviours such as physical activity. The age group 70 years and older became particularly restricted by the confinements. It is important for the older population to maintain functional capacity and reduce age-related morbidity through physical activity, therefore it may be important to identify challenges and opportunities for physical activity when the conditions alter as they have during the covid-19-pandemic; for further work to promote public health.  Aim: The aim was to examine the experiences of and thoughts concerning physical activity/exercise connected to covid-19 of people in the age group 70 years and older.  Method: A qualitative design based on semi structured interviews was used. Five women in age 72-88 years were recruited through convenience sampling. Data was processed with a qualitative content analysis.  Results: The data generated five categories and fourteen subcategories. The categories were: Changes in physical activity during covid-19, Positive experiences of outdoor training, “Träffpunkt” is important during the pandemic, Challenges which complicate physical activity during covid-19 and Driving factors which facilitate physical activity during covid-19. Conclusion: The opportunity of continued organised and adapted group training for elderly during a pandemic contributes to reduced inactivity and increased physical activity within the age group 70 years and older.

Omvårdnadsproblem relaterade till polyfarmaci hos äldre / Nursing problems associated with polypharmacy in the elderly

Grujic, Danko, Silva, Alan January 2013 (has links)
Background: The development of various medicines and treatments has resulted in better treatment for the elderly that has led to a longer life. Because the elderly often suffer from various diseases, they consume more drugs than other age groups. At the same time, the presence of different drug therapies, defined as polypharmacy, increases the risk of adverse effects that can affect the patient's well-being and quality of life. It is therefore important to illuminate the nursing problems that may arise associated with polypharmacy. Through the identification of these problems, the nurse can be able to prioritize and manage nursing actions that benefit the elderly security and wellbeing. Aim: Illuminate nursing problems related to polypharmacy in the elderly. Methods: This paper has been carried out as a literature review. The content acquired through the compilation of available studies in the chosen problem area. The choice of material included articles written in english and included people aged 65 years and older treated with polypharmacy. Results: The result is based on 12 reviewed articles that illustrate associations between polypharmacy and nursing problems. Nursing problems that have emerged in this study include risk of falls, malnutrition, function disability, confusion and lack of adherence. Discussion: The relationship between polypharmacy and nursing problems can be complicated to determine. The difficulty is due to the fact that polypharmacy lacks a clear definition. In addition, polypharmacy is seen in many cases only as a risk factor in the crowd, rather than a unique cause of various problems.

Vitamin D Deficiency: Implications for Acute Care in the Elderly and in Patients With Chronic Illness

Youssef, Dima A., El Abbassi, Adel M., Cutchins, Della C., Chhabra, Shalini, Peiris, Alan N. 01 October 2011 (has links)
There is evidence that the vast majority of hospitalized patients have vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency is a poorly recognized pandemic with evidence to indicate inadequate testing and monitoring of response to treatment in high-risk populations. Vitamin D receptors are ubiquitous in the human body and while the endocrine effects of vitamin D are well recognized, the autocrine and paracrine effects of this steroid hormone are less well appreciated. These functions include antimicrobial and immunomodulation effects as well benefits on cardiovascular health, autoimmune disease, cancer and metabolism. Vitamin D deficiency increases mortality and even a modest amount of vitamin D may enhance longevity. Emerging evidence suggests that a vitamin D replete state carries significant health benefits in acute illness. In this review, we discuss the role of vitamin D deficiency and potential benefits in treating this deficiency focusing on the implications for managing acute illness in elderly patients and those with an underlying chronic illness.

Geriatric Social Workers and Grieving Seniors : An exploratory study of the experiences of geriatric officers working with grieving elderly clients

Otieno, Adede, Jimoh, Ayobami January 2019 (has links)
In Sweden, the elderly population above the ages of 65 who can no longer cater for themselves can seek assistance from the social services in their municipalities. A case officer popularly known as biståndshandläggare in Sweden is usually assigned by the municipality to assist in planning, assessing and making decisions on the kind of services which best fits the elderly clients seeking assistance. This study investigated the experiences of geriatric case officers working with grieving elderly clients who are either in hospitals or in their private homes. A qualitative methodology was employed and, interviews were conducted with four geriatric case officers working within elderly care departments in social services around Mid-Sweden. The results were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that these geriatric case officers had insufficient knowledge on how to work with grief and loss. The results also showed that geriatric case officers had both positive and negative experiences when working with grieving elderly clients. To work in elderly care services, a social work degree or related education is a requirement.

Äldres tankar och reflektioner att självständigt genomföra 30 second chair stand test i hemmiljö - En intervjustudie / Community-dwelling elderly peoples thoughts and reflections to perform a 30 second chair stand test without supervision in their homes - an interview study

Wik, Petter, Skärlén, Joakim January 2022 (has links)
Multiple balance tests exist that’s used in clinic however none that’s utilized independently in home environments. This study explores the thoughts and feelings of community-dwelling elderly to perform a 30 second chair stand test (30CST) without supervision. There´s lack of research regarding thoughts among older adults about physical home test. Objective: The objective is to explore community-dwelling elderly people’s thoughts and reflections to theoretically perform a 30CST without supervision in their homes. Method: The study was a qualitative descriptive interview study based on a strategic sample of five elderly people aged 75-85. They received instructions for 30CST before the interview which the interviews were based on. A qualitative content analysis was used to comprehend data.  Results: The qualitative content analysis resulted in three categories and five subcategories. The categories were Elders health, Perceived advantages and disadvantages with the test instructions, Characteristics in situations and persons that affect elderly during a test situation. Conclusions: The analysis indicate that the participants had positive attitude to perform 30CST meanwhile the participants had thoughts about the need of test-leaders to ensure reliability but not as demand to follow through with the test. The study indicated factors that could be implicate in future home-testing. This study was performed on a limited sample and more studies needs to be concluded to furthermore explore whether a function test can be conducted independently by community-dwelling elderly people.
