Writing materiality into management and organization studies through and with Luce Irigaray

Fotaki, M., Metcalfe, B.D., Harding, Nancy H. 04 July 2014 (has links)
Yes / There is increasing recognition in management and organization studies of the importance of materiality as an aspect of discourse, while the neglect of materiality in post-structuralist management and organization theory is currently the subject of much discussion. This article argues that this turn to materiality may further embed gender discrimination. We draw on Luce Irigaray’s work to highlight the dangers inherent in masculine discourses of materiality. We discuss Irigaray’s identification of how language and discourse elevate the masculine over the feminine so as to offer insights into ways of changing organizational language and discourses so that more beneficial, ethicallyfounded identities, relationships and practices can emerge. We thus stress a political intent that aims to liberate women and men from phallogocentrism. We finally take forward Irigaray’s ideas to develop a feminist écriture of/for organization studies that points towards ways of writing from the body. The article thus not only discusses how inequalities may be embedded within the material turn, but it also provides a strategy that enriches the possibilities of overcoming them from within.

Impairment effects as a career boundary: a case study of disabled academics

Williams, Jannine, Mavin, Sharon A. 2013 June 1924 (has links)
No / Within the academic career literature, disabled academics are under-researched, despite calls for career theory development through the exploration of marginalized groups' career experiences and the boundaries which shape these experiences. Here, boundaries refer to the symbolic resources which become reified to construct social boundaries shaping what is and is not possible in career contexts. This article contributes to the advancement of academic career theory by enabling insights into impairment effects as an embodied career boundary for disabled academics and outlining how experiences of impairment effects and disabled academics' agency are entangled with their career context and organizational members' responses. Impairment effects shape career choices and opportunities, by being negated, and/or influencing expectations of employers to provide inclusive contexts which acknowledge impairment effects as a legitimate organizing principle. However this recognition of impairment as a legitimate organizing principle is not always reciprocated, with implications for disabled academics' careers.

[IN]EVIDENT ECOLOGIES : Embodying Operational Landscapes. Exploring how the embodiment of hidden narratives and situated knowledge can spread awareness of operational landscapes

Landstedt, Ebba January 2024 (has links)
The demand for ‘green’ resources is growing, and in response to this, industrial expansion in northern Sweden is accelerating, leaving little room for a thorough examination of long-term consequences from ecological and social perspectives. Resource extraction in Sweden is nothing new, and some areas still deal with the consequences of previously hastily induced industrialism. This research explores how embodied experiences can be utilized to convey the hidden narratives of a riverine landscape affected by extractive industries, more precisely the area around Áhkájávvre situated in the Luleå River, and how situating oneself within these embodied narratives can contribute to raising public awareness of their ecological and cultural impacts. To support this research question, theories of situated knowledge are introduced, which advocate for the subjective knowledges of the landscape’s ecology and the embodiment of the agents in it. By highlighting the perspectives of its ecology, this thesis aims to connect the urban and the hinterlands - the operational landscapes and change how we view them. The research is conducted through interviews and case studies, followed by a design-as- research methodology, a process-based project which explores various methods of artistic research representation as mediators to situate the observer in the subject and embody the knowledge of the site. It is explored through two perspectives: the area of disturbance (the operational landscape) and the disruptor (us), through the scope of social and ecological dimensions, represented by ‘the people’ and ‘the soil’. This research presents scenarios and explorations aimed at increasing connection to, and raising public awareness of, resource extraction, both historical and ongoing. These scenarios highlight the local effects of the affected area, and the interconnectedness of operational landscapes and urban environments. This research contributes to the understanding of the need for embodied experiences in developing an understanding of the hidden consequences of resource extraction on operational landscape, and to situate oneself in its context.

Projektiv-Evaluatives Priming

Weinreich, André 28 November 2011 (has links)
Judgment and decision are biased by contextual emotional stimulation. However, it has not yet been sufficiently examined how this influence is mediated. Therefore, in this work I investigated the functional mechanisms that underlie the impact of the valence of a prime stimulus on subsequent evaluative judgments. Specifically, I focused on the paradigm of Projective Evaluative Priming (PEP), where the target stimuli that have to be explicitly evaluated are emotionally neutral. The results of the first part of the current work indicate that priming with supraliminally presented primes occurs reliably across diverse classes of primes (words, landscapes, pictures of facial expressions). These findings are incompatible with a core assumption of one of the most prominent theories about affective influence on judgment and decision, the Feeling As Information hypothesis (Schwarz & Clore, 1983, 2003). The findings of the second part show that supraliminal priming increases with the prime’s cognitive complexity, emotional intensity, and the participants’ cognitive resources during target processing. In contrast, priming decreases with the extent to which the participants allocate cognitive resources during prime processing. These findings indicate that PEP is better explained and predicted by the theory of the cognitive-emotional compound (CEC) than the prominent associative semantic network model (e.g. Bower, 1981). The CEC has been developed by the author within the current dissertation process. In the third part of the current work I observed that the impact of a subliminally presented prime on following evaluative judgment behavior increases with the temporal distance between prime and target (SOA), and with the participants’ interoceptive awareness, respectively. These findings suggest that the output of implicit emotional stimulus processing is (partly) embodied, and that the perception of the resulting valence-indicative somatic state provides the agent with information about the value of an event.

Poppy : plate-forme robotique open source, imprimée en 3D et totalement modulaire pour l’experimentation scientifique, artistique et pédagogique / Poppy : open-source, 3D printed and fully-modular robotic platform for science, art and education

Lapeyre, Matthieu 14 November 2015 (has links)
This thesis suggests novel approaches and design processes to create and produce robotic platforms, the control and morphology of which can be freely explored through experimentation in the real world, that are easy to diffuse and reproduce in the research community. Especially, this alternative design methodology is driven by the desire to:• freely explore morphological properties,• reduce the amount of time required between an idea and its experimentation on an actual robotic platform in the real world,• makes experiments that should be easy to do, actually easy to do,• make the work easily reproducible in any other lab,• keep the work modular and free to use in accordance with open source principles,so it can be reused and extended for other projects. Our approach follows novel design methods for both design and production, for all technological aspects of the robot (i.e. mechanics, actuation, electronics, software, distribution). In particular these methods relies on 3D printing for all mechanical parts, the Arduino electronic architecture for the sensors acquisition, an easy to use Python API called pypot for the control and finally the distribution of all our work under open source licenses. Using this methodology, we create the Poppy Humanoid robot, a fully modular robot allowing exploring freely the role of morphology and adapting its body to specific experimental setup. This robot has been released under open source license and all files are easily accessible on the GitHub repository: https://www.github.com/poppy_project/. We experiment the use of this robot for several applications. First, as a scientific tool and we show that Poppy can be easily and quickly modified to either explore the role of morphology or to be adapted to different experimental setups. Based on this work, but from another perspective we investigate the potential impact of such platform for educational and artistic applications.

Alm, Annelie January 2011 (has links)

Losonci, Isabelle January 2017 (has links)
This Bachelor's thesis aims to shed light on the connection between the body and the narrative, and in the execution illuminate and problematize existing power structures that are being replicated in media technical designs. Together with the terms situated knowledges and embodiment I reflect upon if stories, like knowledge, can be enriched through the act of limitation and what happens as stories are transported from their original context to another. I examine stereotypical representation of minorities in film, such as the differently abled, and thereafter reflect upon my own attempts to illustrate narratives beyond my own situated context. I aim to reach a position within my own designing where I can talk about the constructed realities that I replicate, accept my craft as a technology of power, and take steps towards creating designs that are critical of the norm, using the methods design fiction and diffraction as tools. By using web technologies to transport my fictional narratives between bodies, I hope to reflect upon what makes a narrative universal and when they are to be considered situated.

The theoretical basis of the discussion proposed here is the idea of performative embodiment of corporeality (BUTLER, 1993), based on the concept of embodiment (CSORDAS, 1994), seeking to establish relations with the fieldwork in 2011, in gyms in this capital. Special attention is given to issues related to body techniques practiced by these women, the individual management of their own aging process and the construction of feminine identities in old age. We consider the subjectivities, meanings and practices undertaken by them in the life course, paying particular attention to the observed changes in their bodies, the way it influences the configuration of their identities and also to how these women are perceived in their family relationships – gender and intergenerational. This study is located in the field of Anthropology of Aging and Anthropology of the Body.

Flyrén Barrsäter, Veronica January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate if and how the abacus can be an alternative tool for students with mathematics difficulties. Six interviews with mathematics teachers have been conducted. One of these teachers worked in high school, three in high school and two in primary school. Three use or have used the abacus and the other three have no experience with it. The study's result show that all participants are positive about using the abacus as an alternative tool for students with difficulties. However, they felt that mathematics teachers needed a broad knowledge of the abacus to work with the students, and that there was a knowledge threshold that the students needed to come across to learn how the abacus works. The study's result also show that the participating mathematics teachers consider that special education teachers have an important role to play in this context, as advising teachers about the use and function of the abacus. This, in combination with the teachers giving the students the basics of mathematics, makes it easier for students with difficulties in mathematics to gain knowledge in the mathematics subject. Finally, the importance of alternative tools for students demonstrating shortcomings in mathematics, as well as specialist teachers' assignments to promote, prevent and support students in difficulties, is discussed.

A study about body image in practitioners and non-practitioners of activities that promote positive body image

Larsson-Berg, Therese January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine mens positive body image and embodiment. The purpose was also to compare men that practice activities that promote positive body image; hiking, yoga, freestyle dancing, rock climbing, scuba diving, martial arts, horse riding and mindfulness meditation, with med that does not practice any of these activities. Four hypotheses was formulated and tested with Mann Whitney U-test and Spearman´s rank correlation coefficient. Data was collected through an electronic questionnaire that was published on social media. The samples consisted of 328 men that practiced activity and 40 men that did not practice activity. Positive body image was measured with Body Appreciation Scale-2 and embodiment was measured with the simplified instrument Physical Body Experiences Questionnaire Simplified for Active Aging. The results showed that men that practice activites that promote positive body image has a higher level of positive body image and embodiment than men that doesn´t practice that kind of activities. The correlation coefficient show that general exercise correlates with positive body image and embodiment for both groups but shows a greater correlation for the men that doesn´t practice activity. The conclusions in this study is that further research is needed to examine whichactivities and which characteristics in those activities that could promote positive body image. The conclusion is also that in the light of previous research further research is needed to examine which activities and which traits in those activities that can promote body image in men. Further, the conclusion is that some activities could be used in work to promote body image and in daily life to prevent a negative body image.
