Realizace gravírovacího přístroje pro vykreslování grafiky / Project of Engraving device for graphics creationHložek, Vojtěch January 2011 (has links)
The objective of this master's thesis is to design and implement a system which would be able to transfer a picture (either a bitmap or a vector image) on a foundational material. The main part of the apparatus consists of a plotter controlled by two stepping motors. The engraving itself is provided by a marker mounted to a movable part of engraving head. There was a PCB created for controlling the entire system. It contains power supplies, a microcontroller and motor and engraving head controlling circuits. The second part of the thesis shows a microcontroller program and a user interface in a PC. The image is trasfered from the PC into the microcontroller where it is processed and, based on the controlling program, engraved to the material.

Constantin Guys and the Modern NewspaperBlair, Susannah E. January 2022 (has links)
My dissertation looks at a pivotal point in the history of the news image (c.1840 to 1860), when wood engraving and steam-powered printing presses transformed the genre into a mass medium that reached hundreds of thousands of readers. Using the format of the monograph and the work of French artist Constantin Guys, I argue that despite the advent of photography and other reproductive visual techniques, drawing formed the backbone of the new authority of the mass-produced news image.
To make this case, I locate Guys’s drawings within a wide range of other tactics of transcription that made the printing of text and image possible––including stenography and printing telegraphy––to contextualize the strange persistence of this manual medium within the increasingly mechanized armature of the illustrated newspaper. As a study of the formation of trust in the news image at a moment of momentous technological change, my project identifies a vital origin point for pressing questions related to the truth and objectivity of the news in our contemporary moment, and places mid-nineteenth-century drawing at its center.

[EN] This thesis deals with the study of the characteristics of the art of engraving protected by the Valencian Institutions, Provincial Council, City Council and San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The fact of carrying out the study of these three institutions in the same body of work is due to the interrelation that existed between all of them during the period covered by this work, 1934-1982. The approach and the method of work followed for this thesis was, in the first instance to carry out the consultation of the Archives in which the documents, minutes, files, competition exercises, awarded works, prizewinning works, etc., corresponding to each one of the subjects related to this study are kept. In a second step, locate bibliography corresponding to the period covered by this research. Once the subject was framed in its historical framework, we contacted the award-winning artists, the professors of engraving who worked during this period and some politicians who actively participated in the calls for such awards. The purpose of contacting them was to gather their personal testimony and, in the case of the artists, we also collected the data corresponding to their artistic and professional trajectory in order to learn about the works they produced during the years following the receipt of these awards. With all the graphic material collected, we have provided a photographic documentation made specifically for inclusion and study in this work. Once all this material had been located and studied, we went on to carry out the final drafting, ordering it in the following chapters: In a first chapter we briefly situate the matter studied in its specific historical context, in relation to the engraving defended by the Academies, especially by the Royal Academy of San Carlos of Valencia. The second chapter corresponds to the analysis of the two Valencia Engraving Chairs in the period studied, in which we include extensive documentation of the trajectory that led the first chair until the retirement of the head of it and the first moments of the new professor. The third and fourth chapters are dedicated to the study of the awards and prizes granted by the Valencian Institutions. The first of these deals with the scholarships of the Diputación, where we carry out the analysis of both the works corresponding to the competitive examinations and those carried out during the Pension, as well as an approach to the subsequent trajectory of the pensioner, in order to record his current situation. In the chapter corresponding to the Senyera Engraving Awards (fourth), we analyze the award-winning works and the subsequent evolution of these artists up to the present day. Once this research has been carried out, we believe it appropriate to draw some conclusions from each section, considering the particularities of each of the institutions and the differences between them. Finally, we included a section of general conclusions that allows us to give an overall view of what has been the Valencian institutional engraving, fundamental objective of our study. It is also included in this work a documentary appendix where the photocopies of the minutes, files, etc. are included, which due to their importance we consider essential and of interest to include them for consultation by those interested in the subject. / Lita Sáez, F. A competição entre os discursos e as artes na Historia de la conquista de México de Dom Antonio de Solís / The competition between discourses and arts in The History of the Conquest of Mexico by Don Antonio de SolísFreire, Deolinda de Jesus 05 December 2014 (has links)
The basis of study undertaken in this thesis is the approach to The History of the Conquest of Mexico by Don Antonio de Solís under the 16th-century perceptive rhetoric. In our interpretation, the 16th-century historical discourse is produced through art. Narrating memorable feats is the same as describing them, therefore, depicting them, so that the reader can see them. In the editions of de Solis The History enriched by illustrations, the topics read and seen engage in a competition between arts, that is to say, History and Engraving. Our aim is to study the contest imposed by image as a means of outshining the narrative and the descriptions made by the chronicler. Thus, the images mimic his text as a way of achieving emulation. In addition to the princeps edition of the History, the corpus of the thesis consists of three richly engraved editions: the Tuscan edition, published in Florence in 1699; the Castilian edition, published in Brussels in 1704; and the British edition, published in London in 1724. Solís literary composition, as well as its reeditions, is understood here as a competition field for both arts and discourses. The discursive dispute is analyzed through the reading of official texts which form the introductory section of the princeps edition and assess the chroniclers style, decency and prudence applied to precepts, approving and legitimizing his History. The rivalry between discourses and arts aims to achieve effects of docere (teaching), delectare (delighting) and movere (persuading). Thus, the competition incites the delight of wonder, teaches and pleases whoever reads the images through sight, therefore, it persuades in a more intense and effective manner.

Previous issue date: 2006-05-29 / The thesis develops a study about the creation process of DJ Oliveira (Dirso José de Oliveira, from Bragança Paulista, SP, 1932-2005), in an approach of the Genetic Critic of Semiotic base. Painter, muralist and engraver, he had his artistic formation in the Santa Helena Group, São Paulo. He moved to Goiânia in 1959, and became one of the modernist movement and engraving founders. In theory, we try to comprehend how and in which way the artist s gesture drawing configures in work, how it moves, it materializes, it inserts in other movements that involve creation and how it intertwines in doing according to the techniques and materials he uses. For the debate about the cultural matters, a dialogue about the complexity thoughts developed by Edgar Morin is established, mediated in the semiotics by Vincent Colapietro, discussing in Pierce the relationship between the subject and the semiotics and the implications in not considering the subjectivity, in this process, once the semiotics reveals subjects not only as users of symbols, but also as processes and products of semiotics, because, according to this thought, the subject can be a result as well as a transformer and symbol experience agent. In the analyses, the communication process is emphasized, which development, in arte, occurs in two moments: during the process of making and when the work is completed. In the first moment, the process of making occurs in an intrapersonal way, according to the dynamic of symbols, during the creation, and in several ways, guiding himself through the drawing and following his footsteps, as well as the exchanges the artist makes in his historical, technical, artistic, material and cultural contexts to make the work. In the second moment, the process of making occurs in an interpersonal way, by means of the contact of the work with the public. In DJ Oliveira s work, the communication becomes amplified due to factors such as the option for the engraving (which in its multiplicity makes possible the access to a range of people), the production of frescos (which, exhibited in public squares and public places of the city makes easy the access to the work) and the strength of the expressiveness as a way of the spectators involvement.

Carlos Oswald: a gravura como obra de arte na primeira metade do século XX no Rio de Janeiro / Carlos Oswald: ecting as art in the first half of the XX century in Rio de JaneiroPaulino, Helenira 14 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation studies the etchings of Carlos Oswald (1882-1971) in light of his own concepts disclosed in many of his texts, in particular in the autobiography entitled Como me tornei pintor, published in 1957, and in articles published in the magazine Vozes de Petrópolis. The innovativeness of the artist, who established the teaching of metal etching as art in Rio de Janeiro, is evident. With the goal of demonstrating how Oswald\'s concept of metal etching as art distanced it self from Brazil\'s first decades of the XX century firmly established conception of engraving as an art applied to the industry, an analysis of documents and texts about the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes and the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios was performed. Oswald establishes in the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios the teaching of etching as Art, being responsible for the formation of many Brazilian etchers. Here it is also demonstrated that the etchings of Carlos Oswald, during the first two decades of the 1900s, were not evaluated by most art critics for not being considered art. The analysis of the artist etching presented here is based on this above-mentioned conception, as well as in Oswald\'s own propositions expressed in his texts. The research is centered in etchings belonging to the collections of the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes/Ibram/MinC and the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional - Brasil.
