Axios / Axios

Alvares, Jose Alfonso Ballestero 20 December 2007 (has links)
Axios is a sequence of xylographs produced on mdf support with only one V-form gouge; through which we mean to expand the reflection about the human body as an expressive theme, and which includes engraved images and theoretical reflection concerning this process as well as the creation of meaning process; reconstructing, through the dialogue between the engraving and the observer, part of that which the artist needs to say to himself to begin the adventure of poetic manifestation.

The engaging line: E. Mervyn Taylor's prints on Maori subjects

Horrell, Douglas January 2006 (has links)
E. Mervyn Taylor (1906-1964) was a pakeha artist whose prints drew influence from Maori culture and motif. He was one of a small number of artists who developed interest in Maori culture during the 1940s and 1950s. He expanded interest into detailed study of Maori culture, and interaction with Maori, and produced a significant body of prints on this subject during his career. Taylor's prints were acclaimed during his lifetime, but in the decades after his death, his reputation faded to the extent that he became relatively obscure. This persisted until the late 1980s, when art historical reassessment of his work began. This thesis forms a part of this continued re-evaluation. It focuses on Taylor's prints on Maori subjects, an area not sufficiently scrutinised in an academic context. It aims to reach deeper understanding of his prints through historical analysis of the factors that influenced him to choose Maori, and their culture as subjects for his artwork. The thesis also examines why Taylor's reputation was so emphatically based on his New Zealand heritage, as well as the quality of his craftsmanship, his beliefs about which formed the foundation of his philosophy. Nationalist and regionalist notions also figured in his aesthetic ideals. His prints are also placed in relation to the modern debate over cultural appropriation in art. Greater recognition and understanding of Taylor's oeuvre may be achieved by establishing why he chose Maori subjects, and what specific features they contributed to the character of his work.

A competição entre os discursos e as artes na Historia de la conquista de México de Dom Antonio de Solís / The competition between discourses and arts in The History of the Conquest of Mexico by Don Antonio de Solís

Deolinda de Jesus Freire 05 December 2014 (has links)
The basis of study undertaken in this thesis is the approach to The History of the Conquest of Mexico by Don Antonio de Solís under the 16th-century perceptive rhetoric. In our interpretation, the 16th-century historical discourse is produced through art. Narrating memorable feats is the same as describing them, therefore, depicting them, so that the reader can see them. In the editions of de Solis The History enriched by illustrations, the topics read and seen engage in a competition between arts, that is to say, History and Engraving. Our aim is to study the contest imposed by image as a means of outshining the narrative and the descriptions made by the chronicler. Thus, the images mimic his text as a way of achieving emulation. In addition to the princeps edition of the History, the corpus of the thesis consists of three richly engraved editions: the Tuscan edition, published in Florence in 1699; the Castilian edition, published in Brussels in 1704; and the British edition, published in London in 1724. Solís literary composition, as well as its reeditions, is understood here as a competition field for both arts and discourses. The discursive dispute is analyzed through the reading of official texts which form the introductory section of the princeps edition and assess the chroniclers style, decency and prudence applied to precepts, approving and legitimizing his History. The rivalry between discourses and arts aims to achieve effects of docere (teaching), delectare (delighting) and movere (persuading). Thus, the competition incites the delight of wonder, teaches and pleases whoever reads the images through sight, therefore, it persuades in a more intense and effective manner.

Les collections d’estampes en Europe (v. 1450-v. 1610) / Print Collecting in Europe (ca. 1450-ca. 1610)

Gallian, Nastasia 07 December 2019 (has links)
The origins of print collecting are ill documented and cannot be dated nor located with certainty. The early signs can be traced back to ca. 1450, when prints were collected to be pasted in manuscripts and printed books. From the 1470s-1480s onwards, these archaic practices tended to be replaced by modern collecting. It then spread throughout Europe and became a common practice at the dawn of the Baroque era. There are several types of print collectors at that time. Enthusiasts and connoisseurs such as Ferdinand Columbus, Willibald Imhoff and Abraham Ortelius created special methods for selecting, storing and classifying high quality engravings and woodcuts. Ferdinand of Tyrol, Philip II of Spain and others princes gathered prints in their encyclopedic collections and libraries. Other collectors were interested in using them as sources. Artists and craftsmen kept prints to train apprentices and use them as models and tools in the creative process. Scholars purchased them for their subject-matter and used them as historical, geographical, and scientific documents. This wide range of practices is maybe what define the most early print collecting.

La serigrafía artística en Valencia. Evolución histórica y técnica

Silvestre Visa, Manuel 31 January 2024 (has links)
[EN] The objectives of this study are first of all a preliminary analysis of the process of introduction and establishment of the permeographic printing system known as screen printing as a means of artistic expression. permeographic printing system known as serigraphy as a means of artistic expression. It should also analyse the way in which the new procedure was assimilated by Spanish society, in relation to other artists, styles, publishers, etc., taking into account several points: that its artistic use is very recent, that the first to use it were avant-garde groups and movements, and the industrial and advertising connotations with which it began. Finally, we should analyse the way in which screen-printed prints are integrated into the so-called "original graphic work", and the various results of printing that do not fall within this concept: posters, book and magazine covers, multiple, etc.

Eftekharian, Sâyeh 13 October 2006 (has links)

Haj Sassi, Taïeb 24 September 2016 (has links)
The libertine novels ornated with figures grew dramatically in the eighteenth century. According to Goncourt brothers it is “the century of the vignette”. The development of this genre of illustrated books changed, both aesthetic sensibility of the reader and the material conditions of reading a trick story, for our conception of libertine literature as a system of representation is no more exclusively textual nor discursive but triggers a dialogue with the image. The study of this duplication of representation is at stake, using the text-and-image devices it operates, as a new method to analyse their interconnection in the libertine trick stories. One could imagine such narratives are the most distant from the image, since the machination and trickery need to act covertly, whereas the logic of the image appears to be at the very heart of the operative devices of representation which govern the eighteenth century libertine novel. Following that scientific approach, we’ll try to complete the existing studies on poetics of the erotic or intimate scene, and how gazing and theatricality interact within classical fiction, with the hypothesis that, in the trick stories, the representation of the libertine plot faces two strategies: the one that lures with showing something and the other with concealing.

The portrait of the deceased in the Lorraine cemeteries from 1804 to the present day

Bolle-Anotta, Françoise 06 November 2017 (has links)
From the imperial law of 23 Prairial year XII (June 12, 1804) which imposes the burial obligation for all in the cemetery, the sculpture puts itself at the service of the portrait of the deceased, in this very special space which is at the same time of the private frame and the public setting. Heir to a tradition hitherto booked with noble and to the king, the funerary portrait is displayed in an iconography which oscillates between symbolic system and realism of the physical features; the soldier is honored as hero while the priest is venerated by the parishioners. Falling under the fashion of the “statuomanie galopante” years 1880, the Lorraine cemeteries join the public will to honour its Great men, at one time when the “Small Fatherland”, Lorraine, meets the “Great Fatherland”, France, where known artists and sometimes less known put their know-how and their notoriety at the service of portraits the notable ones. The funerary portrait knows its golden age then. Whereas the modern cemetery is built little by little thanks to its compartmental organization, the families test the imperative need very quickly to materialize, on these family concessions, the memory of the features of their late and the carved portrait give of it them the opportunity and here it is which leaves the intimacy of the living rooms to be installed either on the family stele of the tomb. Thus the tearful husband remembers the face his dear wife, that ploughed up parents can comfort themselves to have lost a little angel in him substituent another face, rather idealized, or best the figure of another angel, more solid because out of marble and more protective. Little by little, the cemetery is avoided of people of statues which some professional reasons come to supplement, rare however. The personalization of the tomb remains however very discrete, the pain contained. The funerary sculpture, and the portrait in particular, are put at the service of the expression of subsidiary or marital feelings, hitherto booked with the intimacy, but translate an elitism which the legislation 23 Prairial An XII did not wish. For the period 1880-1930, the silent partners of the funerary portraits profit from a widened offer of products in particular thanks to rise of the photography and with the process of vitrification. Without competing with the carved portrait carried mainly by the bronze medallion and the sculpture in the round, the photographic stained glass makes it possible to promote the memory of late in a luxurious house, where, for the first time, the presence of the color makes animate these faces and makes them almost alive. But, it is a luxury which few families can offer. Then, the photographic medallion on enamelled plate, more modest, makes it possible to less fortunate customers to reach the funerary portrait with the cemetery. After 1930, whereas vault and stained glass disappear from the alleys of the cemetery, the medallion can definitively take seat on the burials. Very quickly, these is a assured success which is not contradicted, still today. The period of 1940 to our days is by far richest in funerary portraits and this thanks to techniques controlled well, that of photography on porcelain medallion and that of mechanical or artistic engraving, grace also to new supports which are the funerary plates, the ballot boxes, vases. And it is not rare that a family resorts to different techniques for each one of her late. The way of presenting the late one also evolved; the photographic model of studio gives way to a model presented “to the naturalness”, i.e. resulting from the family photographic album and new symbols show the late one under more personal aspects. From now on, the funerary portrait of late with the cemetery is not only any more one face but it is also a sportsman, a hunter, a motorcyclist, a professional, in love with the animals, an amateur of game of bowls.
