En Europe au XVIIIe siècle, le roman épistolaire connaissait un grand succès. En France aussi, un grand nombre d'auteurs s'appuyait alors sur ce genre littéraire pour transmettre des idées philosophiques et souvent critiques envers la société de l'époque, à travers des lettres prétendument véritables, à un lectorat croissant.À l'époque, parmi les écrivains dont les œuvres étaient très appréciées par les lecteurs, un nombre non négligeable était composé de femmes. Parmi elles se trouvent par exemple Françoise de Graffigny avec les Lettres d'une Péruvienne ou bien Marie-Jeanne Riccoboni avec plusieurs romans épistolaires comme les Lettres de Fanny Butler.À partir du XIXe siècle, ces auteurs ont souvent été effacées de la mémoire culturelle et ont, pendant longtemps, été délaissées par la recherche littéraire. Parmi elles se trouve Marie Leprince de Beaumont, gouvernante catholique, qui était jusqu'au XIXe siècle surtout connue pour ses ouvrages sur l'éducation des enfants, des jeunes filles et des pauvres. Elle a pourtant publié une œuvre d'une variété étonnante : on y trouve des contes pour enfants, le Nouveau Magasin français, un des premiers journaux mensuels en français à avoir été dirigé par une femme, ainsi que plusieurs romans épistolaires.L'œuvre de cette femme auteur qui, quoique catholique et croyante, essaie de transmettre dans ses livres des perspectives sur les possibilités pour les femmes de mener une vie vertueuse et honnête dans une société imprégnée par la prédominance des hommes, ne fait l’objet de recherches littéraires approfondies que depuis peu de temps.Cette thèse vise à analyser et interpréter la tension entre un christianisme profond et le désir d'améliorer l'accès au savoir pour les femmes dans les romans de Maire Leprince de Beaumont, qui « [...] avait une prédilection affichée pour le genre épistolaire [...] » . Il s'agit d'abord de les placer dans leur contexte littéraire et historique et de situer ensuite l'idée de « l'éducation narrée » au centre des recherches : comment Leprince de Beaumont se sert-elle du genre épistolaire pour communiquer des idées philosophiques ainsi que des modèles de comportement au lecteur ?La thèse veut démontrer qu'au XVIIIe siècle, il était tout à fait possible de concilier le christianisme avec le souhait de faire progresser la société de l'époque en facilitant l'accès au savoir pour les femmes ; qu'être croyant ne voulait pas forcément dire repousser les idées novatrices et que Marie Leprince de Beaumont et son œuvre épistolaire méritent une place honorable parmi les auteurs des Lumières / In 18th century Europe, the epistolary novel was very popular. In France, a great number of authors used this literary genre to spread, across supposedly real letters, the philosophical, and often critical ideas on society (of the time) between a growing readership.At that time, a significant number of authors, whose works were very appreciated by the public, were (was?) female. Among them were for example Françoise de Graffigny with the Peruvian Letters or Marie-Jeanne Riccoboni with serveral epistolary novels like Fanny Butler’s Letters or Julie Catesby’s Letters.From the 19th century, these authors often disappeared from the cultural memory and have been neglected by literary research for a long time. Amongst them we can find Marie Leprince de Beaumont, a catholic governess, who was, in the 19th century primarily known for her educational works for children, young girls and poor people. However, she has published a surprisingly divers œuvre : it consists of fairy tales for children, the Nouveau Magasin français, one of the first monthly journals edited by a woman, a considerable correspondence and several epistolary novels.The work of this female author who, even though she was catholic and believing, tried to pass on in her books new perspectives on the possibilities women had to live a vertous and simple life in a society that was shaped by male predominance, is only recently in the center of enhanced literary research. This thesis wants to analyse an interpret this tension between a profound christianism and the desire to improve womens acces to knowledge and education in the fictions of Marie Leprince de Beaumont who « had a predilection for the epistolary genre ». We will first range the works in their literary and historical context and place then the idea of „narrated education“ in the center of our research: how does Marie Leprince de Beaumont employ the epistolary genre to communicate philosophical ideas and behavioral patterns to her readers ?This thesis wants to show that in the 18th century it was possible to reconcile christianism with the desire to help developping the society by facilitating women’s acces to education ; that believing in God didn’t obligatorily mean that one rejected new ideas and that Marie Leprince de Beaumont and her epistolary fictions deserve their place among the authors of the Enlightenment

The Dynamics of Theatricality and Sensibility: Charlotte Lennox's The Female Quixote and Frances Burney's Evelina

The cult of sensibility in the eighteenth century celebrates delicate emotional responses. Such susceptibility to emotion, however, has to rely on somatic representations such as sighs, tears, convulsion, and faints. So, paradoxically, interiority is known to others only by outer bodily signs, signs that could just as easily reflect an affectation of sensibility as sensibility proper. The attempt to control the slippage in the reference between interiority and appearance becomes an anxious cultural feature of eighteenth-century men and, especially, women, of the higher classes. If sensibility requires such careful control and practice, its assumed spontaneity becomes a fiction. The performing body of sensibility turns into a screen that veils one¡¦s true interiority rather than a transparent reflection of it. The performing body is theatricalized¡X placed on the stage as a spectacle, examined by spectators. Sensibility falls prey to insincere, artificial, and affected performances. Emotional representations are constantly facing inroads of theatricality. When emotional expressions are rendered formulaic and reproducible, they lose their naturalness. Moreover, sensibility requires witnesses, spectators who can vouch for its authenticity (but never validate it beyond all doubt). Sensibility cannot proclaim itself because such proclamation would violate sensibility¡¦s principle of sheer sincerity and spontaneity. Theatricality, as an abstracted concept of theater, points both to the formulaic performances and to the model of spectator and spectacle in the theater. Sensibility is closely related to theatricality in these terms. This thesis aims to reveal the dynamics of the interplay between theatricality and sensibility in two eighteenth-century British novels. Both novels present a young heroine making her debut in the world after spending her formative years in seclusion with a male guardian. The Introduction reviews the eighteenth-century cult of sensibility. Chapter One discusses the theoretical and contextual relations between theatricality and sensibility. Chapter Two deals with Charlotte Lennox¡¦s novel The Female Quixote (1752), and how the heroine¡¦s sensibility is ridiculed as a form of self-theatricalization. Lennox gives the clash between sensibility and ridicule a generic dimension by blaming romance for the heroine¡¦s delusions. Chapter Three examines Frances Burney¡¦s epistolary novel Evelina (1778) and argues that the heroine¡¦s sensibility is both sealed and revealed in Burney¡¦s epistolary form since it enables Evelina to switch between being both spectator and spectacle. The conclusion briefly sums up the previous chapters and points out how, more generally, interpretations of literature can benefit from a recognition of the dynamics of theatricality and sensibility.

In this context, the ideas of the philosopher John Locke (2012) ― inserted in this study ― were influential in placing the sensorial experience in the first sphere of the means by which the individual is led to understanding, and thereby giving the body greater importance in the construction of the individual identity. Following Ian Watt's (2010 ) conclusion that the novel is consolidated when the narrative resources used in it become subordinated to a moral intention, and Foucault's (2006 ) assertion that the practice of religious confession gradually lifted sex to a privileged dimension of individual inner truth, our research aims to analyze the impact of writing of the self in the consolidation of the novelistic genre, taking as a corpus for this thesis two influential pornographic works of the period: Fanny Hill or Memoirs of a woman of pleasure (1749, John Cleland / England) and Theresa, Philosopher, or Memoirs to serve as the story of Father Dirrag and Miss Eradice (1748, Jean-Baptiste de Boyer , Marquis d' Argens / France). In these novels, the moral is problematized by an incursion into the obscene, and in confessions in which the characters recall learning processes from two relevant axes in the literature of the Enlightenment: pleasure (Fanny Hill is an apprentice prostitute) and philosophy (Theresa is an apprentice libertine). In this study, we have tried to show that the discourse on sex in the eighteenth century pornographic novel is endowed predominantly with what we have chosen to name aesthetics of confession, and that this resulted in important developments in the characteristics that the novel took in the eighteenth century. / O romance licencioso do chamado "Século das Luzes" foi aliado à composição epistolar a partir da qual é criado um espaço de intimidade que favorece o surgimento de um discurso de confidência; espaço, a priori, propício à exposição individual e à confissão de segredos. Naquele contexto, influiu o pensamento do filósofo John Locke (2012) ― presente neste estudo ― que colocara a experiência sensorial na primeira esfera dos meios que levam o indivíduo ao conhecimento e, assim, dando ao corpo maior importância na construção da identidade individual. À luz da conclusão de Ian Watt (2010) de que o romance moderno se consolidou quando os recursos narrativos nele utilizados se subordinaram a um propósito moral e da constatação de Foucault (2006) de que a prática da confissão religiosa gradativamente alçou o sexo a uma dimensão privilegiada da verdade íntima, tendo seu auge no século XVIII, nossa pesquisa busca analisar as consequências da valorização da escrita de si na consolidação do gênero romanesco, tomando como corpus duas obras pornográficas influentes no período: Fanny Hill ou Memórias de uma mulher de prazer (1749, John Cleland/Inglaterra) e Teresa filósofa ou Memórias para servir à história do Padre Dirrag e da Senhorita Éradice (1748, Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquês d'Argens/França). Nesses romances, a moral é problematizada através do mergulho no obsceno, em confissões nas quais as personagens rememoram processos de aprendizagem a partir de dois eixos relevantes na literatura do Século das Luzes: o prazer (Fanny Hill é aprendiz da prostituição) e a filosofia (Teresa é aprendiz do libertinismo). Neste estudo, buscamos apontar que o discurso sobre o sexo no romance pornográfico setecentista se mostra dotado predominantemente do que optamos chamar de estética da confissão, que trouxe desdobramentos importantes para a configuração que o romance tomou no século XVIII.

Orientador: Daniela Mantarro Callipo / Banca: Marcos Antonio de Moraes / Banca: Ana Maria Carlos / Resumo: No romance epistolar O marido da adúltera, publicado em 1882 pelo escritor e jornalista Lúcio de Mendonça, encontram-se traços marcantes e inequívocos da estética naturalista desenvolvida, sobretudo, por Émile Zola. Neste trabalho, pretende-se verificar de que modo o idealizador da Academia Brasileira de Letras recebeu as ideias do Naturalismo e as inseriu em sua obra, verificando o processo de adaptação executado pelo autor brasileiro, que soube dialogar com a estética naturalista em voga na época, aplicando muitos de seus princípios, discordando de alguns deles. Cabe observar, igualmente, o fato de que Lúcio de Mendonça optou pelo romance epistolar, gênero pouco utilizado no Brasil do século XIX, mas fundamental para a construção desta obra. Esta pesquisa visa, portanto, analisar de que maneira o autor de O marido da adúltera utilizou-se do naturalismo francês para criar um romance epistolar brasileiro, publicado, originalmente, no periódico O Colombo, em forma de folhetim; característica, aliás, que se conserva no momento da publicação do romance em livro, em 1882 / Abstract: On the epistolary novel The adulterer's husband, published in 1882 by the writer and journalist Lúcio de Mendonça, it‟s found distinctive features and unequivocal from the naturalist theory developed, especially, by Émile Zola. In the present paper, it‟s intended to verify what way the creator from the Brazilian Academy of Letters received the ideas of Naturalism and put them into his work, checking the adaptation process performed by the Brazilian author, who knew how to dialog with the naturalist aesthetics in common use that time, enforcing lots of his principles, disagreeing with some of them. Este trabalho pretende apontar algumas características da retórica epistolar presentes nas cartas trocadas entre Francisco Pinheiro, grande mercador lisboeta da primeira metade do século XVIII, e seus familiares e amigos enviados para representá-lo no trato em algumas partes da América lusa. Com o pressuposto de que os recursos presentes nas cartas cumprem um fim pragmático esperado segundo o costume retórico de longa duração, primeiramente se busca um olhar para as cartas que supere as hipóteses feitas sobre elas em sua transcrição e publicação na obra intitulada Negócios Coloniais. Assim, ao constituir os papéis novamente como ruínas de um tempo que já é morto, espera-se alcançar e delimitar a noção de negócio presente nas relações dos tratantes do Antigo Estado português. Esse exercício se espera realizado por meio de ao menos dois procedimentos: o primeiro consiste em especificar a retórica atuante no horizonte de possibilidades daqueles mercadores segundo uma genealogia do gênero epistolar; o segundo incide no papel que essa retórica cumpre associada aos códigos teológicopolíticos que permitem tal atividade ser chamada de trato. Destarte, pretende-se delinear o quanto a noção de carta, nesse contexto, auxilia na compreensão da noção de negócio, pois o que nos séculos XVII e XVIII se entende por relação de amizade baliza os parâmetros de ambas. / This work aims to point out some characteristics of epistolary rhetoric present in letters exchanged between Francisco Pinheiro, grand Lisbon merchant of the first half of the XVIIIth century, and members of his family and friends who were sent to trade in regions of Portuguese America. Through the assumption that the resources present in those letters play a pragmatic order expected in the long term of the rhetorical institution, we first searched for a look at the letter that surpasses the hypotheses made upon their transcription and publishing in the work entitled Negócios Coloniais. Therefore, whenever looking at the papers again as ruins of a time that is already dead, we expect to reach and define the notion of business shared by the tradesmen of the Old Portuguese State. We expect to accomplish this exercice through at least two procedures: the first one is to situate the active rhetoric on the horizon of possibilities of expression of those merchants within a genealogy of the epistolary genre; the second, in turn, focuses on the role of rhetoric associated to the theological-political codes that allow an activity called affair. Thus, we intend to draft how the notion of letter in this context helps to understand the concept of business, in order to show that, in XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries, what was meant as a relationship of friendship was the the goal of both.

The Crafting of the Self in Private Letters and the Epistolary Novel: El hilo que une, Un verano en Bornos, Ifigenia, Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela, and Cartas apócrifas

The inherent flexibility of the letter form or epistolary mode of writing frees the writer within the framework of salutations and closings to use vocabulary and language to create, to omit or to invert conventional constraints imposed on women by a patriarchal society. The letter begins as a blank page but becomes the space for writing one’s personal thoughts and emotions to the absent other in a communicative effort to minimize the separation. This dissertation examines the female narrator in actual letters written during the Spanish emigration to the New World in the sixteenth century and four epistolary novels written by female authors during the nineteenth- and twentieth centuries. The female “I” emerges in the selected texts and attests to the writer’s ability to inhabit her own writing space. By applying Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of dialogism and Janet Altman’s formal approach to the epistolary novel, the epistolary and literary textual creations by women writers challenge the silence and traditional anonymity generally assigned to women. I explore the cultural enculturation of the transgressive female who loses her “self”, her very being because of her inability to conform to societal norms as outlined by Barbara Creed and Elaine Showalter. In addition, I apply ideas from Linda Kauffman’s study on the transformation of the female writer who metamorphoses from victim to artist through the use of pen and paper. The female ‘self’ crafted by each of the letter writers is studied as they narrate their space, exercise agency, and negotiate the conflicts and contradictions of their domestic and public space. The epistolary, whether actual or fictional, becomes a textual creation challenging the silence and traditional anonymity assigned to women. The letter, when used as a literary device, is the perfect vehicle to create a narrator who controls his or her own life’s narrative. The writer constructs an implicit recipient linking the addressee and engages the reader in an absorbing story.

La construction linguistique de la relation interpersonnelle dans les Lettres de Mme de Sévigné / The linguistic construction of the interpersonal relation in Mrs de Sévigné's letters

Dans cette recherche, je m’intéresse à l’analyse de la relation interpersonnelle telle qu’elle est construite dans / par un discours spécifique : les Lettres de Madame de Sévigné. Les Lettres sont adressées à des destinataires différents. Une analyse comparative des configurations énonciatives me permet de dégager les différentes façons d'ancrer linguistiquement le coénonciateur (-destinataire) dans les lettres. Les analystes de Madame de Sévigné ont rarement mis l’accent sur le fait que la lettre s'inscrit dans une interaction, ne serait-ce que parce que la réponse du destinataire a été la plupart du temps perdue. Mon travail consistera donc aussi à repositionner ces lettres dans le cadre plus vaste de l’interaction. On sait que Madame de Sévigné aime écrire, ce qui lui permet, entre autres, de présentifier ses destinataires, et particulièrement sa fille, cette analyse s’attache donc aux différentes FNA présentes dans la lettre. La valeur de ces formes est à prendre en considération avec le co(n)texte / In this search, I am interested in the analysis of the interpersonal relation such as she is built in a specific speech: Madam de Sévigné's letters. Letters are sent to different addressees. A comparative analysis of the enunciative configurations allows me to clear the various manners to anchor linguistically the coénonciateur (- addressee) in letters. The analysts of Madam de Sévigné rarely emphasized the fact that the letter joins in an interaction, if only because the answer of the addressee was lost most of the time. My work will also consist in repositioning these letters in the vaster frame of the interaction. We know that Madam de Sévigné likes writing, what allows him, among others, to présentifier his addressees, and particularly her daughter, this analysis thus becomes attached to the present various FNA in the letter. Pushing the "Scented Envelope": Elisa von der Recke at the Cultural Crossroads Carrie L. Cox Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages, BYU Master of Arts This thesis serves as an introduction to the 5-volume electronic edition of the collected works of the influential German-language author Elisa von der Recke to be published by the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages at Brigham Young University. The compilation presents a modern edition of Recke's published writings and letters in German, with an extensive critical apparatus in English, including introductions to the edition, author and individual sections, biographical information, a complete bibliography of primary and secondary works, a photo/portrait gallery, and critical annotations. During her life as an author, traveler, social luminary, and salonnière, Elisa von der Recke (1754-1833) stood at the crossroads of European history and culture. Born into a German-speaking noble family in the Duchy of Courland (now Lithuania), Recke was positioned between the conflicting intellectual discourses of religion and rational Enlightenment; between intellect and sentiment; between the noble class, to which she belonged, and the bourgeoisie, which she preferred; between traditional views of a woman's role, and her own ceaseless intellectual striving. This essay examines the way Recke creatively asserted herself as an individual in spite of the limitations of her time in three main areas. First, I discuss the way that Elisa writes her memoir in an expertly layered style, utilizing her author's voice alternately as both character and narrator.
