Hållbarhet i en textil värdekedja : en studie av produktutveckling inom ridsport / Sustainability in a textile supply chain : a study of product development within equestrian sport

Hydén, Emilia, Majava, Sara January 2018 (has links)
Equestrian sport is one of the largest sports in Sweden. Despite this, it has lagged behind in the development towards a sustainable future. However, according to research, there are a lot of strategies for implementing sustainability in the textile value chain, which the equestrian companies could benefit from.   The purpose of this study has been to map some of the Swedish product development brands in the equestrian industry, to see how they work with sustainability and what kind of obstacles and challenges they face within this work. A qualitative method was used in the study, where interviews were conducted with Swedish companies that manufacture products for horses and riders. Production takes place exclusively abroad.   The results of the study show that the four participating companies work differently with sustainability. Although the two most prominent and most established companies are reasonably similar in their design and in their vision of sustainability, different measures have been taken to achieve these. Crucial factors seem to be the ability to allocate resources to active sustainability work, and commitment from employees and management, but also traditional factors weigh in. Where the older company works more conservatively with well-implemented strategies, such as code of conducts and long-term supplier relationships to create stable relationships, while the more newly established company takes another path, where innovation and research are the main focus. Similarities to how conventional clothing companies work has been identified, in terms of supplier management and managing code of conduct's regarding labor issues.

The Equestrian statue - a study of its history and the problems associated with its creation

Duffey, Alexander Edward January 1982 (has links)
Through the ages the portrayal of man on horseback has provided the sculptor with the chall~nge to solve one of the most baffling compositional problems in Art. The problem involves the balancing of a vertical mass on a large horizontal one, which in its turn rests on slender supports. To add to the complexity, the natural gait of the horse is unsuitable for artistic reproduction and must be skilfully modified so as to look natural and be aesthetically acceptable. Further, horse and rider must form a unity, which reflects the character of the rider. In spite of the formidable technical, compositional and aesthetic problems associated with this type of sculpture, the monumental equestrian statue has always been a popular form for honouring heroes and sovereigns. The representation of man controlling the powerful majestic horse and at the same time looking down on his fellow men from his elevated position on the back of the horse, appealed to the depostic ruler as well as to the man on the street. The monumental equestrian statue had its origin in the sixth century B.C. in ancient Greece. Since then it has flourished in times of autocracy. The ancient Greeks solved most of the technical, compositional and aesthetic problems of the equestrian statue. The Romans inherited the tradition of erecting equestrian statues from the Greeks and made it the sole privilege of sovereigns. Solutions to technical and compositional problems were taken over directly from the Greeks. The Romans, however, preferred bronze as a medium instead of marble. In spite of the compositional freedom which the use of bronze gave the sculptors, the Romans preferred a rest fur figure showing a rider as triumphator. During the Middle Ages most of the Roman equestrian statues were destroyed, with the exception of a few. The Marcus Aurelius in Rome was mistaken for a statue of Emperor Constantine, the first Christian emperor, and it was spared. Since it showed a barbarian beneath the forelegs of the horse, the statue became symbolic of Christianity overcoming paganism. In this sense the equestrian statue acquired symbolic funerary implications. Stone was the favourite medium and the sculptors of the Middle Ages solved numerous problems associated with the creation of an equestrian statue in this medium. Bronze equestrian figures were neglected because the technical know-how of the Greeks and Romans had been lost. The Renaissance once more focussed the attention on the individual, thereby reviving the truly secular commemorative equestrian statue of Classic Antiquity. Technical, compositional and aesthetic secrets of Antiquity were gleaned from surviving equestrian statues and antique sources. Donatello revived the Roman tradition of monumental bronze equestrian statues with his Gattamelata, while Verrocchio created the first secular equestrian monument since Antiquity with his Colleoni equestrian monument. Although Leonardo's Sforza and Trivulzio equestrian statues have not survived, the solutions which he found to technical, compositional and aesthetic problems while working on them, were to have a profound influence on all later equestrian statutes. A complete revisal of the commentaries on his notes connected with these monuments have proved that he not only renewed the entire technical approach to this sculptural form, but he also found new compositional and aesthetic solutioDuring the period from the Baroque to the end of the nineteenth century, Leonardo's innovations were implemented. The Giambologna studio in Italy established the proto-types for all Baroque equestrian statues. The French inherited this tradition. A complete history of all the French equestrian statues before the French Revolution is given. During the nineteenth century technical improvements resulted in the mass production of equestrian statues throughout the world. A complete history of all the equestrian monuments in South Africa is given and it is indicated how this form was adapted to South African conditions. Modern technical and compositional methods are discussed and evaluated.ns which completely revolutionised the creation of equestrian statues. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 1982. / gm2014 / Historical and Heritage Studies / Unrestricted

Performance development of adolescent equestrians : a Mindfulness -Acceptance - Commitment (MAC) approach

Schutte, Ilé Louisa January 2014 (has links)
The Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment (MAC) approach is a sport psychology programme aimed at performance development in athletes. This study set out to gain an understanding of how adolescent equestrian athletes experienced this programme, using an in-depth qualitative approach called interpretive phenomenology analysis (IPA). Four equestrians, three females and one male, ranging in age from 16 to 18 years, completed an experiential learning-based programme over a two-day period. Semi-structured interviews were subsequently conducted with each participant to gain an understanding of their experience of the programme in terms of (1) their learning regarding the programme; (2) possible application of the learning to equestrian sport; and (3) possible transference of the learning to other areas of their lives. The interviews were transcribed and analysed according to the principles of IPA and the findings pertaining to each participant are discussed in terms of the most significant themes identified during the interviews. The concluding chapter discusses both the common and the unique findings obtained from the participants’ accounts in relation to the existing literature. The findings of this study highlight the importance of the partnership between equine and human when applying MAC in equestrian sport and also illustrate the applicability of MAC, not only in equestrian sport, but also in other areas of an adolescent’s life. This project contributes to sport psychology since it is the first qualitative study describing the experiences of adolescent equestrians regarding the MAC approach. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / lk2014 / Psychology / MA / Unrestricted

Equestrian communities: design features and development process

Fackrell, Lara L. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Stephanie A. Rolley / Equestrian Communities are platted housing developments that include amenities suited for horse boarding and riding. Since the mid 1970s, this particular sector of amenity community development has become an increasing trend. This study was designed to take a look at the way these communities are designed; where they are located; how they are managed; and, to whom they are marketed. Designing equestrian communities requires knowledge of how these communities are designed, where the land comes from, why people are buying into them and who those people are. Case study methodology was used to gather data on 22 communities across the US. Data sources included review of the marketing websites belonging to the communities; a literature review; and, interviews conducted with individuals responsible for the design and sales of the communities' lots or the management of the equestrian facilities. Statistics and images of the communities, including plats where available, were compiled into community "cut sheets" which are single-page synopses of each community.

Western Riders Association of Sweden : En kartläggning och genusteoretiskundersökning av Wras historia 1982-2006 / Western Riders Association of Sweden : A survey and gender theoretical study of Wrashistory 1982-2006

Hillring, Petra January 2020 (has links)
This essay is a survey and a gender-theoretical study of Western Riders Association of Sweden(from here on: Wras) between 1982-2006. The purpose of the study is to contribute to equestrian historical research as well as gender historical research by examining Wras from a gender theoretical perspective. The aim is broken down to two research questions: • What did the organization, as well as collaboration with other organizations and authorities, look like in Wras between 1982-2006, and can this be connected to the gender structures within the association? • What was the gender structure in leading positions within Wras and in competitions held by the association between 1982 and 2006, and how did this change over time? The material in this paper consists of various documents from Wras, including documents from board meetings, results from competitions, magazines and letters. The study uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative method, as both were considered necessary to fulfil the purpose of the essay. In the qualitative study texts has been interpreted and analyzed. The quantitative study has collected the number of men and women in charts and based on these figures interpreted the result. The results of the study have been compared to Hirdman's theory of gender regarding gender segregation. The survey shows that when Wras was formed in 1982, the association was male-dominated.The association invested in educating the Swedish western riders. During the 1990s, Wras cooperated with several other organizations and authorities, which in some cases led to competition and some fragmentation between western riders.During the 1990s, more women became members in Wras, having leading positions and competed. The study shows that several competition classes were feminized and became female dominated when more and more women started to compete. This mainly applied to classes that within the rodeo was gender coded as feminine, or classes where assessment was on appearance and therefor required a well-groomed horse. The classes associated with the rough work on the ranches were given a male gender coding. In America, this division between classes and gender distinction had already taken place in the western riding and rodeo, and Sweden took notice. The result shows that Hirdman's theory of gender segregation can be applied to western riding where men and women are divided according to the characteristics they are considered to have.

Ridsportens konsumenters köpprocess av hästtäcken och ridbyxor : en studie om hållbarhet inom ridsporten / Equestrian consumers purchasing process of horse blankets and riding pants : A study about sustainability within equestrian

Karlsson, Emma, Wilck, Elin, Börjesson, Nathalie January 2020 (has links)
Equestrian is one of the largest sports in Sweden and is dominated by a target group of people who are often interested in fashion given the majority of this group is female. Two key products in equestrian are riding pants and horse blankets, which contribute as a major part of consumer purchases. There are large volumes of textiles used in the equestrian industry for different products, which create a challenge for sustainability. This study is intended to contribute as research relating to the sustainability of textiles within equestrian. Moreover, the study investigates the purchasing process of consumers in equestrian in relation to sustainability. The qualitative data has been collected by undertaking fifteen interviews, focusing on the purchasing of horse blankets and riding pants. The results have been analysed using the purchasing process as a framework, as well as focusing on additional factors which have an impact on consumption, and in turn on purchasing behaviour and the purchasing process. The analysis outlines some key factors in the equestrian consumers’ purchasing process, which help outline the procedures for purchasing riding pants and horse blankets. When it comes to the role of sustainability, it can only be found in two out of five parts of the purchasing process. As a result of the analysis, the interviewees believe that it is difficult to find enough information regarding sustainable purchases of horse blankets and riding pants. Moreover, there is a belief that there is a shortage of environmentally sustainable products in the market. The interviewees also believe that companies within the equestrian industry that produce and sell textile products need to be more informative about the sustainability of their products. This is to create a demand among consumers for sustainable products. The aim of the study has been to create an understanding of consumers’ choice of environmentally sustainable products within equestrian. Overall, the result of the study shows that there is a lack of environmentally sustainable textile products within the equestrian industry.

E-träning inom ridsporten : Om medierad träning till häst / E-training in equestrian sports : about mediated training on horseback

Wernquist, Ellinor January 2021 (has links)
The wave of digitalization has reached the world of equestrian sport and multiple applications for training and improvement for riders and horses has been launched on the market.  This candidate paper study how e-coaching is currently being applied in Swedish equestrianism and how this new technology impacts the relationship between trainer, rider, and horse. The aim of this thesis work is to reach a conclusion on the status of the demand and, in extension, the market potential of new and/or improved services for e-training in equestrian sport.  A series of interviews were performed with trainers whom are current, active, users of e- coaching as well as trainer whom have never tried the technology. These interviews where then put in contrast with the results from a survey of equestrian.  The main concern and challenge of e-coaching in equestrian sport is the technological challenges. Building trust and a working relationship between student and trainer over digital link was described as challenging by students and trainers alike.  The study found that there is a lack of understanding of e-coaching among Swedish equestrians. E-coaching is a growing phenomenon and there is a market for technical solution for applying electronical solutions tailor-made for application in equestrianism.

Drop out inom svensk ridsport : En studie om faktorerna om varför man väljer att sluta med ridsport / Drop out in equestrian sports : A study on the factors why actives in equestrian sports choose to quit

Persson, Hanna January 2017 (has links)
What makes some choose to drop out of a sport? The purpose of this paper is to investigate what influences the choice to end participation in equestrian sports in Sweden and if these factors differ depending on the level of practice. I have also checked at what age it's most common with drop out in the equestrian sports and how many people have chosen to resume it again after a break. The essay is quantitative and data collection was done by a survey, where n = 47 respondents participated in different ages and backgrounds. The survey contained background questions and a questionnaire (Questionnaire of Reasons for Attrition, Gould et.al(1982) ) highlighting eight different factors that may affect the choice to end. Data analysis performed the SPSS statistics program and calculations were based on mean values, mode, variation and t-test. The result showed that the most common causes of drop out in equestrian are too high costs, it takes too much time and other interests are more fun for the group as a whole. Those who had a background as competitive activists knew, however, that the biggest reasons were lack of development and success, and that it was too stressful / strenuous to keep up with. Those who did not compete thought that lack of interest and less social support were the main reasons.
