Discours romanesque, théorie litteraire et théorie du monde dans l’œuvre d’Édouard Glissant et d’Ernesto Sábato / Novelistic Discourse, Literary Theory and Theory of the World in the Works of Edouard Glissant and Ernesto Sabato

Grotowska, Eva 26 June 2014 (has links)
Édouard Glissant and Ernesto Sábato are both well-known for their work as writers and philosophers. Their theoretical reflection, which analyses questions pertaining to language, history and identity, nourishes their novelistic production. In fact their novels mark the crossroads of theory and fiction. The latter are a forum for thought where the theoretical bases of their reflection are applied to reality. This perception of the novel as strictly related to their essay work leads us to consider the use of metafiction, a technique that encompasses both types of creation. The search for different metafiction strategies will allow us to analyze the construction of “guiding fictions”. At the same time, it will lead us to consider the role of a writer in the process of constructing a “national conscience” through literature.

Gladiolas for the Children of Sanchez: Ernesto P. Uruchurtu's Mexico City, 1950-1968

Villarreal, Rachel Kram January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation examines the moralization and beautification campaigns of Mexico City's mayor Ernesto P. Uruchurtu. As head of the Department of the Federal District from 1952-1966, his policies encouraged more popular housing, improved infrastructure, better transportation, cleaner markets, and safer streets. Uruchurtu also aimed to crack down on vice and beautify the city. He believed that through beautification and moralization the city would become safer, healthier, and more livable for all residents. Significantly, he promoted the expansion and improvement of parks, gardens, recreational facilities, the repairing and building of fountains, and the planting of trees and flowers, especially gladiolas. Living with more green and athletic spaces, urban dwellers would have the opportunity to improve physically and spiritually, and would feel inspired to lead more moral lives. Residents could then collectively come together to take pride in their city and generate a stronger sense of civic culture. Consequently, a new generation of youth would grow up in a healthier urban environment and promote national prosperity. This dissertation explores these policies and analyzes the debates surrounding Oscar Lewis's anthropological work, The Children of Sanchez, to highlight anxieties about the effects of urbanization, modernization, and industrialization on the capital's inhabitants. Following the book's publication in 1964, hundreds of articles appeared in newspapers and magazines responding to its subject matter; the intimate details about life for one "typical" poor family living in a slum tenement in the city's center. The debates underscored the uneven benefits of Uruchurtu's policies and offered insights into contradictory depictions of Mexico City: the prospering center of industrialization and growth, and the hub of poverty and despair. Responses to the book expressed how many of the poor experienced economic and political changes during the 1950s and 1960s. The debates also offered details about the cultural and social implications of Uruchurtu's administrative policies and provided a unique opportunity for an open public exchange about life in the capital.

A Resistência de Ernesto Sabato

Skrepetz, Inês 15 June 2011 (has links)

The present dissertation aims to investigate the diversity of Ernesto Nazareth interpretations, whose music has been performed by classical pianists and choro groups. Such diversity leads us to some questions that permeate this work: what are the auditory and interpretative tools available to us to enjoy and build a performance of Nazareth’s music? Do such tools exist in function of the written music or the environment, instrumentation or social surroundings in which the music is played? How was Nazareth acting as a pianist and composer? How was the musical practice of the pianists of this period? What do we have to take into account from the history of popular urban music in Rio de Janeiro to address this song? Therefore, the work analyzes the interpretation of four musicians: Jacob do Bandolim, on the recording of the song Confidências; Carolina Cardozo de Menezes on her arrangement for Odeon; Hercules Gomes on his arrangement for Odeon; and Sônia Rubinsky, on the recording of Batuque. Still in this investigation, the present research studies the period in which Ernesto Nazareth composed his songs and the relation of composer with choro groups.

: A study in the use of history of Che Guevara in popular culture.

Melin, Katarina January 2017 (has links)
Låten diskuteras vidare under studiens resultatdel.

Interrogating post-Marxism: Laclau and Mouffe, Foucault, and Žižek

Nash, Matthew Austin 15 December 2009 (has links)
According to Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, our postmodern era and its correlate political problematic requires a shift in positing socialist strategy. Their wager is that by shifting away from essentialist Marxism, and towards a post-Marxist theory of hegemony which they adapt from Gramsci, the analytic for overturning contemporary hegemony will take the form of a radical democratic politics. My contention is that in shifting away from essentialist Marxism through their post-structuralist deconstructive stance, Laclau and Mouffe overstep and make their analytic for socialist strategy impotent. In order to show where Laclau and Mouffe have gone wrong I use primarily the work of Michel Foucault and Slavoj Žižek in order to demonstrate how a post-structuralist theory of ideology need not be a post-Marxist theory of ideology. / Master of Arts

O colapso e a reconstrução: uma análise do discurso sobre Estados falidos e reconstrução de Estados / Collapse and Reconstruction: a Discourse Analysis of Failed States and Nation-Building

Gomes, Aureo de Toledo 23 August 2012 (has links)
Using Ernesto Laclaus discourse theory, this dissertation analyzes the conceptions of failed states and nation-building presented in documents produced during George W. Bushs administration. We intend to understand how it was possible to conceive state failure as an essentially domestic event, as well as the ideas that democracy is the best institution for failed states and that the U.S has a proven capacity to rebuild states. Our hypotheses are the following: firstly, through assumptions based upon rational choice institutionalism, the history of failed states is seen in a depreciative manner by being judged in light of a Western model of economic and political development. Secondly, democracy is here understood as an empty signifier, given that it is not only the best and the fairest political and economic system, but also the one that today enables countries to perform essential state tasks in a more efficient fashion. Finally, through a series of case studies, the documents present the idea that the U.S is historically engaged in nation-building, from the occupations of Germany and Japan at the end of World War II to the recent interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq after the September 11th, 2001, attacks.

Mobilinea: design de um estilo de vida (1959-1975) / Mobilinea - the design of a lifestyle (1959 - 1975)

Hugerth, Mina Warchavchik 27 April 2015 (has links)
This dissertation aims to uncover and critically examine the evolution of Mobilinea, a Brazilian furniture design company. During the period from 1959 to 1975 it was one of the most prominent firms in the country, not only as a producer of goods but also in terms of promoting certain lifestyles. The first chapter of the study presents the context of furniture production in Brazil until the founding of the company, its insertion in the Brazilian design circuit of the 1960s and 1970s, and the individual stories of its creators and collaborators. The second chapter has a focus on the key attributes of the products, as well as the promotional environments and sales approaches, highlighting them as components of domestic environments. The third chapter reviews the presence of Mobilinea in publications during the studied period, analyzing the different messages created for the target audiences, through charting out the similarities and differences. It was mostly in this media that the company disseminated its values, which included ways of inhabiting and acting in the home, suggesting a leading role for women in developing and consuming these living styles.
