Dhume-Sonzogni, Fabrice 21 June 2011 (has links)
This thesis is dedicated to the ethnico-racial discrimination in the work experience placements organized under school status. It lands these issues from the school point of view, disciplinary institution confronted with the transformations of its boundaries - as much on the level of the management of the public as on the reorganization of its connections with the company. It is first about the institutional and political environment of these issues in France, wich is simoultaneously characterized by a banality of processes of ethnicisation in the school and by the denial of the reality of ethnico-racial discrimination. Dealing then within the particular framework of professional training, this thesis analyses the way discrimination takes shape, among other illegalities, in the concrete strain between a plurality of standards co-existing in the school and the company. It brings to light the institutional and professional mechanisms as well as the reasons of a coproduction and a banalization of discriminations by school agents. At last, it analyses what the pupils make of these discriminatory experiments they live, as the strategies they will use to make sense or not of these issues, to give them room in their path and in their relationship with school. By a public sociology approach, built through a work with the public actors in the scholar institution, the analysis stands on several investigations led from 2004 to 2010 in different grounds in France.

Lauzon, Véronique 04 1900 (has links)
Based on the sociology of ethnic relations and symbolic interactionism, this master thesis aims at analyzing how women of Muslim culture involved in the Quebec public sphere interact with the stereotypes by which they are characterized in society but to which they do not associate themselves. Starting from the premise that there is a dominant ethnicizing discourse depicting Muslim women as being « submissive » and « vulnerable », these women are assigned a depreciative identity they do not share. They perceive a discrepancy between their own identity, which is the one they want to be perceived as, and their assigned identity.Starting from semi-structured interviews, this master thesis proposes a typology of women of Muslim culture involved in the public sphere. This typology is use to analyze how they perceive the dominant discourse and the reactions it evokes in them. The results suggest that these involved women develop identity strategies to confirm and reinforce the identity they wish to be recognized by the majority society. These strategies revealed the porosity of ethnic boundaries, since some of them will adopt strategies oriented to « similarisation » with majority while others will seek to differentiate themselves.

Hranice jazyka jakožto hranice etnické identity. Vztah užívání jazyka a etnické kategorizace u olašských Romů na východním Slovensku. / Language Borders as Borders of Ethnic Identity. Language Use and Ethnic Categorisation Among Eastern Slovak Vlax Roma.

Hajská, Markéta January 2018 (has links)
Language Borders as Borders of Ethnic Identity Language Use and Ethnic Categorisation among Vlax Roma in Eastern Slovakia The thesis focuses on the topic of the relationship between language use and the process of ethnic categorization in one municipality in Eastern Slovakia. It presents an extensive case study based on eighteen years of field research among the inhabitants of the Vlach Roma settlement in the village called "Borovany ". The author uses a combination of socio-anthropological and sociolinguistic methods and explores the actors' perspective on the conceptualisation of group boundaries dividing the inhabitants of the village into the Vlach Roma (Vlašika Rom), Non- Vlach Roma (Rumungri) and Non-Roma (Gáže) and the role of language in the whole process. In the anthropological part of her research, the author studied the patterns of social organization within the studied village and analysed the symbolic categories that are relevant for the social space of the group of Vlašika Roma. She discusses the ways in which symbolic boundaries between "us" and "them" are formed and focuses on identifying the boundary markers that shape these symbolic boundaries. She concludes that it is the language that represents one of the most important pillars of the group identity of the Vlach Roma while...

Those experiences were lived and realized in the period of Early Christianity and, without a doubt, contributed significantly to its expansion process. We present the passage of Acts 8,26-40, the episode of Philip and the Ethiopia n. What happens here is a dislocation of the missionary-geographical axis from Samaria to the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza , and reaching back to Caesarea. The text opens up the horizon of Christian experiences to other peoples and nations represented in the figure of the Ethiopian eunuch. Taking Acts 8,26-40 in its Lucan redaction as a starting point, using exegetical methods and historical-literary resources, based on the theoretical reference to the concepts of ethnicity and ethnic boundaries, we intend to investigate the possibility of a Christian experience lived in Ethiopia, which constructed itself ethnically from the identities that interacted in the text, and which points out to the imaginary of Ethiopia s symbolic universe. Doing so, we reclaim, within Biblical Exegesis, hermeutical issues for our own theological, biblical, and pastoral practice, on the horizon of the identities and ethnic boundaries of the Africanamerican and Caribian universe. Apresentamos a perícope Atos 8,26-40.

'I'm from Barcelona': Boundaries and Transformations Between Catalan and Spanish Identities

Drew, Liesl January 2017 (has links)
In the last decade or so, the multiple political factions in Catalonia have adopted pro-independence initiatives in their platforms following the 2008 financial crisis. Catalonia’s position as representing a minority culture in the face of the centralized administration of Madrid presents a contentious history of fighting for the right ‘to be’, culminating in what today is viewed by many as an identity crisis.              Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Barcelona, this thesis examines how informants construct and transform their socio-cultural identities in the framework of the independence movement in Catalonia. It places informants’ experiences in the theoretical realm of ethnic boundaries, analyzing central issues of Catalan language normalization vis à vis the historical imposition of Spanish as the national language. These themes are broadened in light of the recent upsurge of Catalan secession, and explores identity politics within the background of Spanish and Catalan nationalisms.
