The sounds of the city are subject of recent discussion. The 70th decade of the XXI Century is the period where the founders works in the study of sounds and of urban space are identified in literature linked to the social sciences, both pure and applied. Even being object of recent reflection and still little known, the sounds of the city takes themselves present in researches, if not as a central focus, as a constituent aspect of the town and the life in this place. This dissertation aims to identify the presence of the city sounds as theme of research in the Brazilian field of Urban and Regional Planning thru keywords searching in the studies of this area. The moments of analysis were two: former, to demarcate the temporal scope, was launched a broad look at PUR covering both dissertations and theses presented in Post-Graduation Program on Urban and Regional Planning (PROPUR/UFRGS) from the foundation of this program in 1970 until 2009, and the set of papers presented in the last four editions of the meetings of National Association of Post-Graduation in Urban and Regional Planning - ANPUR (X, XI, XII and XIII ENANPUR, that occurred respectively in the years 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009).In sequence were treated in depth the papers presented at the XIII ENANPUR (2009), because the biggest recurrence of keywords with associative potential with the research theme named sounds of the city was identified in this event. This analysis allows us to infer that the sounds are increasingly frequent topic in the PUR area, being identified as ways of dealing with the sounds the presentation of them as a constitutive part of the urban experience, as everyday practices, and as a aspect that is enounce because is apprehended as a problem.

Building a Pious Self in Secular Settings: Pious Women in Modern TurkeyJanuary 2012 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation aims to explore the diverse ways in which piety is conceptualized and cultivated by highly-educated Muslim women in Turkey. These women hold active positions within the secular-public sphere while trying to keep their aim of becoming pious in their own way, in relation to their subjective understanding of piety. After a detailed analysis of the formation of the secular modern public sphere in Turkey, in relation to the questions of modernity, nation-building, secularism, Islamism, and the gender relations, it gives an account of the individual routes taken by the highly educated professional women to particular aspirations of piety. The individual stories are designed to show the arbitrariness of many modern binary oppositions such as modern vs. traditional, secular vs. religious, liberated vs. oppressed, individual vs. communal, and etc. These individual routes are also analyzed within a collective framework through an analysis of the activities of two women's NGO's addressing at their attempt of building a collective attitude toward the secular-liberal conception of gender and sexuality. Finally the dissertation argues that Turkey has the capacity to deconstruct the aforementioned binary categories with its macro-level sociopolitical experience, and the micro-level everyday life experiences of ordinary people. It also reveals that piety cannot be measured with outward expressions, or thought as a sociopolitical categorization. Because just like secularism, piety has also the capacity to penetrate into the everyday lives of people from diverse sociopolitical backgrounds, which opens up possibilities of rethinking the religious-secular divide, and all the other binaries that come with it. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Religious Studies 2012

Writing the next Chapters of our Books : Every-day resistances by Greek women in SwedenVagena, Eftychia January 2016 (has links)
This work is dedicated to exploring the possibilities of everyday knowledges and practices to re-address the issue of resistance, problematise the existing notions and create re-articulations. In what follows, I am investigating the main intersections of discrimination in the experience of the latest wave of Greek women migrants in Sweden in order to single out and analyze the ways and tools of their everyday resistance and re-existence. Grounded in the geo-politics and body-politics of knowledge this research begins with challenging the Greek crisis and migration to transgress all-encompassing categories such as crisis, migrant, woman, everyday, resistance and at the same time propose alternative ways and tropes to comprehend and handle their content. In order to reconfigure everyday resistance and expose the marginal layers between “obedience” and “disobedience”, I will unlearn and relearn the Greek history, decolonize the Greek identity, and at last reaffirm the experiential knowing through being, a knowledge that has been durably repressed.

La quête identitaire dans le théâtre de Yasmina Reza / The identity’s quest in the theatre of Yasmina RezaMuttib Hussein, Thakaa 06 July 2009 (has links)
Yasmina Reza’s theatre is a part of the contemporary theatre. This study approaches the identity’s quest. In this theatre of conflict, the rezaldians ─ writers lacking in inspiration, critics or historians ─ are in loss of identity. These protagonists suffer from fear of death, of living in the memory of close relative or of the fact of getting older, experienced as a shipwrecked. They can only suffer of the imposed circumstances upon them and live a life doomed of a repeat scenarios of the past. In this kind of theatre without action, the inner drama transpires through the absurdity of a life filled with ridiculous acts and insignificant words or remembering family’s history. In this kind of plays, the language is the only action as the key which solves the dramatic plot. In this quest for unification of identity, each one tries painfully, through the story, to accept his past and the fact how he becomes now, far away from what he can imagine himself. This fragility of the identity is thus tending to end up as an engine creation. Reza’s writing, full of contradictions, is a looking for pacification. The author of this play invents her own style and identity by describing the quotidian life of her character. Such quest theatrical shows how Reza wants to make her character doing his quest of security, of his own identity and looking for a meaning in his life.

Aproximações acerca do cotidiano: enigmas e revelações de pessoas com hepatite B / Approaches on the everyday routine: enigma and revelations of people with hepatitis BIsabela Nogueira Pessoa 17 August 2009 (has links)
The Amazon region is considered an area of high endemicity for hep B. In the State of Acre, and in the city of Rio Branco, the reality of teens and young adults, on the heights of their reproductive and work/study productive period, constituting a population severely affected by the disease, is characteristic. Therefore, it\'s been aimed in this study, the comprehension of the way of life of the HBV affected people, both sexes, between 15 and 30 years, to contribute on the understanding of the complexity of this situation., through health actions more appropriate to the needs of these individuals. The qualitative methods were shown more suitable, because they allow the understanding of the events and the way those individuals lived their experiences. It\'s been recognized on the routine, \"historical-original-meaningful\", an opportunity of discovering new paths of understanding for reality. The participants were found on the Specialized Assistance Service, by the use of exclusive research tools, handled for obtaining socioeconomic informations and guiding the interviews with the individuals. Eleven interviews were made, two of them with relatives. The testimonies given, along with the field notes and the pointers of the participant observation, as well as the information gathered by the initial questionnaires, constituted the analyzed records. The material analysis permitted the following categories: disease discovery, covering the situations that hastened the diagnosis on the asymptomatic and symptomatic cases, as well as the main information about the disorder; everyday disease, covering the perceptions around the adverse effects of the treatment, the restrictions derived of the disease and/or farmacologic treatment and the prophylactic care; way of life, presenting the strategies of coping the disease, arrangements which the individuals confront with the implications of Hep B, whichever they are, religiosity, familiar and spiritual support, and planning for the future, as well as the affective relations on routine, and at last, the discrimination and stigma, reality still present on the context of infectious diseases. So, the comprehension of the way of life of people who live with the B virus, based on the routine, is pointed out to colaborate on the greater understanding of their health needs, enabling the allowance of fairer assistance strategies, glimpsing the full attention of these individuals

Time as penalty and the work as premium: daily lives of the prisioners at the PeniteniÃria Industrial de Sobral (PIRS).Robson Augusto Mata de Carvalho 23 July 2009 (has links)
The objective of this research was to examine the relationship between the length of prison sentence and the prison work from the perspective of the prisoners of the Sobral Regional Industrial Penitentiary (PIRS). In order to understand this relationship, I analyzed the experiences of the perception of time and the sense of work in the socio-prison dynamic. Among the issues that guided the research are: how the individuals subjected to the disciplinary rules in PIRS perceive and experience the time of sentence? What are their representations of the time? How the prison spaces are distributed, appropriated and resignified by prisoners? What is the meaning of work for the prison way of life and the consciousness of the prisoners? Which sociability is made by the work? For technical and methodological procedures used during the field research, between the years 2007 and 2008, I made use of observations of the spaces and the relations between the social actors in prison, the analysis of institutional documents, local newspapers etc. Besides the observations, Iâve made semi-structured interviews with prisoners and people from the group leader in order to elucidate the network of social relations established in the institution. The research revealed that the time and work are appropriate and resignified the prisoners in a different way of the outside society. In a idlenessâ context , the time presents itself as a significant daily category, since the prisoners have their own formulations about the time they spend in prison, as "lost time", "dead time", "kill time" etc. As scarce goods, the work appears with one of the best ways to "spend time" and to achieve "recovery", contributing to the formation of expectations, desires, relationships, behavior, forms of organization and sociability.

There is much talk about the problems in the everyday life of schools, about school failure and the so-called troublesome students, but very little has been discussed about the pedagogical practices inside schools. Little attention has been given to the youngsters\' accounts of their school experiences and their way of going through them. With the purpose of analysing this latter issue, we initiate our study with a bibliographical search inside the CAPES academic resources website - in which we noticed that the presence of the students´ voice in the published research is minimal, and that the academic studies have largely focused on the subjects of the poorer urban neighbourhoods. The new element in our study refers to the locus in which it was carried out: a middle class neighbourhood in São Paulo city. We tried to observe, to listen to and to analyse a group of youngsters that used to hang around the gateway of a public primary and secondary school. We thought initially that they were out of school. During the fieldwork we learned that they were still enrolled at the school and that some days they come in to attend the classes: In their own words: \"It depends on the teacher\". On the other days they stay at the gateway, lingering, playing guitar and smoking. In the process of understanding what was underlying their act of \"staying at the school gateway\" we realized that it was a way of resisting to definitively abandoning the institution. It is important to notice that the school authorities pass by them on a daily basis and do not show any interest in bringing them back to their place as regular students. And the students, in their turn, take active part in this game, as long as it is convenient for them. A practice they learned inside the school, when their teachers put them out of the classroom freeing them to be wherever they wanted. Practices such as that comprise what we denominate here the process of precarious schooling. This study presents contributions related to this process.
