The concept of affectivity (LAMY, HDR (2011)) is an independent variable that Lamy, Guéguen &Fischer-Lokou (2008, 2009,2010) will measure the effects by semantic evocation on pro-socialbehavior. As the semantic evocation of the concept of freedom (Gueguen & Pascual, 2000, 2002),the concept of affectivity facilitates action. Semantic Beginning of a Concept by Violence Tested byTodorov and Bargh (2002), a sentence (Banaji, Hardin & Rothman, 1993), an object (McCall and Belmont, 1996) makes it possible to modify the judgments or behaviors of the individual (Devine, 1989; Bargh, Chen and Burrows, 1996). We test the effects of the initiation of the concept of affectivity by a word on pro-social behavior. Six experiments are conducted to explore this hypothesis. The results show that pro-social behavior is facilitated when the concept of affectivity is visually initiated by the word "LOVE" in order to obtain an act of giving, whether or not there is an interaction with the individual; Similarly, the influence of this concept introduced orally into a sentence facilitates the production of the expected behavior. The symbol of affectivity expressed by a flyer in the shape of a heart, makes it possible to obtain a gift more frequently than a flyer of rectangular form. Finally, the verb "AIMER" compared to the symbolic expression of a red heart affixed on a tee-shirt, makes it possible to obtain more donation. The force of the concept of affectivity initiated by the word "LOVE" introduces into the environment of the individual visually on a tee shirt in an explicit or implicit request for help or orally introduced in the phrase of interaction with the " Individual, facilitates the expected behavior. The theory of semantic networks explains these results. The perspective of this work is to test this concept of affectivity in children, in other cultures, to explore the mental lexicon in order to identify the concepts likelyto positively influence the pro-social action.

REACTIONS TO RANSOMWARE VARIANTS AMONG INTERNET USERS: MEASURING PAYMENT EVOCATIONJason Cameron Bays (6613361) 15 May 2019 (has links)

Ransomware,
a form of malicious software, takes users’ files hostage via encryption and
demands payment for their return. Since its inception, ransomware has branched
into many different variants, some of which threaten users with scare tactics
in order to evoke payment. For this study, four variants of ransomware were
examined by presenting vignettes via an anonymous online survey. No actual malware was installed on
any devices throughout this study. Their
emotional responses were captured as well as their level of familiarity with
information security. Responses to the survey after the simulated ransomware
vignette were recorded to gauge how users would react to a ransomware attack.
Data was analyzed to discover which types of ransomware evoked payment as well as if information security knowledge also
had an effect on likelihood to pay. This
data is intended to be used to develop better prevention methods and messaging, with an emphasis
on promoting training
on malware avoidance. The study found most
individuals did not choose to pay, and
this could be attributed to a distrust of the ransomware threat. Self-reported
information security behavior appeared to decrease payment evocation, however, peer information security
experience and prior exposure to malware appeared to increase payment evocation.

Modelling institutional values transmission through a comparative case study of three schoolsTrubshaw, Donald Mark January 2014 (has links)
This thesis presents a model of institutional values transmission through cross-case analysis of values education undertaken in three UK secondary schools. Since the early 1980s a significant amount of research has been carried out on cultural transmission and the transmission of values, though it has focused on intergenerational transmission within families and the interaction between the school and the family in terms of converging and diverging values and worldviews. Very little work has been done on the process of transmission of values in schools or other organisations that is evidence-based. An increasing number of governments and organisations, as well as schools, are beginning to invest seriously in values education programmes, but whether the idea of values education is theoretically coherent is still disputed. Through an evaluation of the philosophical, psychological and sociological literature on values and employing phenomenological and semiotic analyses, a theory of values as transmissible entities is developed, which is then extended to a general concept of values transmission using the twin terms invocation and evocation, to denote modes of bringing value concepts to the awareness of an audience and of generating group cohesion through a shared experience linked to particular values, respectively, these terms themselves emerging from the theory of values. Through data collection, analysis and modelling of values education in three schools – a state comprehensive, a faith school and an independent – a plausible mechanism for institutional values transmission is developed. This mechanism integrates two partial models: a permeation-authority inculcation model of transmission flow with a resistance-transformation model of moral autonomy. At its heart it envisages a systemically robust cycle of institutional values discourse, institutional cultural expectations and the generation of a sense of community shored up by individual commitment. A two tier qualitative approach is used in this research, having both an inductive, theory generating phase of field research, data capture and analysis, and a deductive, hypothesis-led confirmatory phase. The inductive phase uses a case study format and cross-case analysis, providing data for analysis and for testing a set of hypotheses in the deductive phase. The development of a mechanism for institutional values transmission is carried out using an institutional model of the schools as a data collection and analytical instrument, based on three structural aspects: an authority hierarchy; an interiority/exteriority duality in the institutional lived-experience; and a system hierarchy. Multiple data collection and analytic methods are employed in each case study, in order to build up a ‘three-dimensional’ picture of the transmission of values in each school. Both comparative and iterative cross-case analyses are carried out. The findings emerging from the case studies suggest the following tentative conclusions: schools have varying degrees of awareness of the values that they impart, although all consider values education to be an important part of what they do and to impact on student performance and behaviour; while there is some explicit values-oriented pedagogy, most teaching of values is implicit; schools with greater ethnic diversity have more challenges to build a cohesive community, as this is at odds with the ‘spontaneous sociality’ of the pupils; there is a broad convergence on the same values found most widely distributed throughout schools across the widest range possible with respect to forms of governance, educational philosophy and demography. The findings carry a number of pedagogical implications: general support is found for explicit values education programmes and the linking between behavioural standards and academic achievement; the importance of the development of a ‘moral community’ around the ethos of the school and the creation of opportunities for multiple belonging is highlighted; and resistance to institutional authority structures is explored for its significant potential for transformation to an acceptance of institutional values.

This dissertation was developed in the Professional Master's Program in Public Administration of the Faculty of Administration and Accounting Sciences of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora and sought to understand how the social representation of UFJF employees' strike has impacted the strike movement. Strikes in the public sector are controversial phenomena, and can be considered as causing disruption to society or as an inalienable right. It is possible to verify in the institution the existence of strikes almost every year, some of which have a long duration. The research sought to understand the concepts and perceptions related to the strike movements. To that end, it relied on the Theory of Social Representations, which proves to be promising for a deeper understanding of social phenomena. It was identified the representation of the strikes from the perspective of the Technical-administrative in Education, who constitute the non-teaching personnel of the university. The word evocation technique was used to collect data. The research revealed that the social representation of strikes comprise, significantly, the idea of positive connotation fighting for rights, demonstrating that the servants understand them as protest movements. However, at the same time, they involve relevant negative connotations, such as the transformation into a simple opportunity to take time off on the part of the servers, in addition to the damages naturally caused to the academic community due to the discontinuity of the services provided due to the work stoppage. The main problems identified relate to the lack of dialogue and interaction among the servers and the lack of adequate information on the issues surrounding the strikes. As a possible strategy for action, it is suggested, especially, the promotion of dialogue and interaction among employees, through the creation of environments for discussion of issues concerning labor relations in an institutionalized manner by the UFJF administration. It is also recommended to provide adequate information to the servers and also the adoption of personal and professional training actions, related to the awareness, training and development. Such actions may be implemented by both the university administration and the union representative of the category.

Theory and intuition in psychotherapyShirley, Derek William 01 1900 (has links)
This study is an account of the development of a personal, intuitive epistemology for psychotherapy, and an exploration of some possible implications thereof for a general professional epistemology. Initial analysis of the author's problematic clinical cases revealed that assumptions regarding the nature and process of therapy predisposed the author to a reliance on rational, theoretically founded therapeutic praxis. When rationality was perceived not to be achieving the desired ends in therapy, the author experienced escalating, critical self-consciousness, and worked ever harder at improved rational problem-solving. This constituted a self-reinforcing problem cycle during 'stuck' consultations. The premise that effective action is rational was seen to constitute a
weltanschauung of the therapist, and understood to be inconsistent with the postmodern frame of ecosystemic theory. A hermeneutic .action research process was initiated, its concern to accommodate spontaneity as an antidote to rigidifying rationality in the author's clinical and academic praxis. The exploration of spontaneity and intuition was massively influenced by the author's unexpected immersion in shamanic tradition, itself predicated on mythological and intuitive construction of "a" world, rather than denotive description of 'the' world, as is
the case in logocentric practice. i'he social disjunction and existential challenge occasioned by immersion in such tradition occasioned angst in the author, and it took years to find an uneasy rapprochement between the
different contexts of the author's life. Nonetheless, a change in the author's epistemology and clinical praxis
were effected, and the initial problematic clinical situation - partly a consequence of a relational stance entailed in notions of objectivity, a hidden concomitant of logocentrism - has not recurred. A case which evokes the revised epistemology and cognitive-affectiverelational stance of the author is presented. The possibility of an intuitive psychotherapy and its coherence with ecological thought and the tenets of postmodernism and narrative therapy are explored. / Psychology / D. Litt. et Phil. Floral induction and initiation in Ptilotus nobilis: The effect of light intensity, temperature and daylength on floral evocation and development.Sybille Orzek Unknown Date (has links)
Ptilotus nobilis is a short-lived perennial wildflower, native to semi-arid and arid areas of Australia. Propagation by vegetative means is constrained by the early onset and a continuous flowering habit. Despite being defined as the main barrier for vegetative propagation no published research on floral induction and initiation was found. The aim of this study is to provide the first insights into floral evocation in P. nobilis, with the general objectives being to investigate floral induction and initiation, find the means to maintain plants in the vegetative phase, enhance leaf initiation and to gain knowledge of growth and development with an emphasis on light intensity, temperature and daylength. Early experiments aimed to increase the understanding of growth and development. The main cardinal events were identified including the onset of branching (axillary stem growth), visible bud stage, first floret opening and maturity of the inflorescence. To aid future cultivation schedules, four growing degree days (GDD) and one chronological model, using days after sowing (DAS), were established and validated. All GDD models were accurate in predicting first floret opening and maturity, but not in predicting visible bud stage. Best prediction was achieved by using an upper temperature threshold of 18.2 ºC and an own base temperature of 5.0 ºC. Days after sowing were an accurate means of prediction, indicating that temperature and other variables such as light intensity regulate development. A series of defoliation treatments investigated the maintenance of P. nobilis plants in the vegetative phase. Within all treatments, reproductive structures were observed and all plants with more than two true leaves entered the reproductive phase. Plants with less than two true leaves showed a delayed floral bud appearance by up to 20 days. Floral development was affected by most defoliation treatments resulting in vegetative growth within the inflorescences. It is hypothesized that plants have a very short juvenile phase and that a constant floral stimulus may be needed for floral evocation. Using scanning electron and light microscopy a template for the transition from vegetative to reproductive phase was developed. Bract initiation was accompanied by a significant increase in meristem area and diameter, and was defined as the onset of flowering. The established template was used in a subsequent glasshouse trial, which revealed that floral initiation occurred very early and at 25 DAS all plants had entered the reproductive phase. Branching and leaf area expansion were identified as post- initiation processes. Plants were exposed to different light intensities (229.3, 398.6 and 909.3 µmol m-2 s-1) in a glasshouse. Under low light, final leaf number increased by up to three leaves, indicating that the vegetative phase was prolonged. Cardinal events were delayed but all plants reached maturity. It was concluded that a light intensity of 229.3 µmol m-2 s-1 was not low enough to prevent floral initiation and that a further decrease of light intensity in combination with temperature could be more effective. Interactions of light intensity, temperature and daylength were investigated. Plants were grown under high light and low light (< 1.2 MJ m-2) intensities, 25/10 ºC and 35/20 ºC and daylengths of 11 h and 16 h. During the trial period (42 days), low light intensity suppressed floral initiation and high temperatures maintained more plants (70%) in the vegetative phase. However daylength treatments had no effect on the time of bract initiation or the percentage of vegetative plants. After 83 days floral buds and axillary stems were observed on some plants under low light intensity, indicating the onset of the reproductive phase and showing that P. nobilis could not be maintained in the vegetative phase indefinitely. Plants under high light were harvested at maturity and effects of temperature and daylength were analysed. Final leaf number increased under 35/20 ºC supporting the previously established results that floral initiation was delayed and leaf production enhanced by high temperature. Morphological data was collected to classify the photoperiodic response of P. nobilis. Plants under 25/10 ºC and 11 h had the longest inflorescences and greatest number of buds and flowers, which was also reflected in the buds and flowers dry weight, with an increase of up to 3.4 fold under these conditions. The difficulty of classifying some plants accordingly to their photoperiodic response and the proposal that P. nobilis may be a facultative short day plant under 25/10 ºC is discussed. In summary, this study presents the first evidence that P. nobilis has a very short juvenile phase and that growth and development are mainly driven by light intensity and temperature. It was possible to enhance vegetative growth by defoliation, low light intensity and high temperatures, however this did not fully prevent flowering, which indicates that P. nobilis has a very strong flowering response or signal.

This study aimed to identify how IT professionals in a Brazilian oil company perceive its IT Governance. For this, the Theory of Social Representation (TRS) was used, specifically the Central Nucleus Theory inaugurated by Jean-Claude Abric. To carry out the investigations we used an online questionnaire, which was used to apply a word evocation test aimed at interpreting the central nucleus of social representation. In total, it was considered the responses from 140 professionals of the company's IT department surveyed who responded to the questionnaire. The word evocation test allowed the identification of the social representation of IT Governance, through the construction of Vergés quadrant, with the calculations performed in spreadsheets and later confirmed by EVOC software. The elements identified in the central nucleus, responsible for consolidating the consensus view of the group, were Control, Strategy, Alignment, Management and Planning. The first three elements have solid support in IT Governance literature, as IT professionals have the vision that IT Governance is responsible for the control of IT, ensuring its continued alignment with the organization's strategy. Already, the Management and Planning elements appear to be linked to more operational specificities and characteristics of the IT Governance model implemented in the studied company, suggesting a lack of clarity in the distinction between Management and IT Governance concepts. Regarding the peripheral elements, it was found the following expressions: Decision, Guidelines and Standards. Some elements such as Decision, Steer and Responsibilities, according to the literature, have relevance to the concept of IT Governance, but were not identified in the central nucleus. Additionally, it was not indicated any expression related to relational mechanisms, which according to the Academy, are fundamental and necessary for effective IT Governance. There were not also identified other elements highlighted in the literature, such as the notion that IT Governance is responsible for ensuring that IT investments create value, for managing IT performance and manage the risks due to the use of IT in the organization. Understanding the social representation of IT Governance can help explain the organization's behavior analyzed in relation to various aspects of IT Governance, allowing the identification of opportunities for improvement in the currently adopted model.
