Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes for removal of Pharmaceuticals from water : Performance studies for sub-stoichiometric titanium oxide anode and hierarchical layered double hydroxide modified carbon felt cathode / Procédés électrochimiques d'oxydation avancée pour l'élimination des composés pharmaceutiques de l'eau : Etude des performances d'une anode d'oxyde de titane sous-stoechiométrique et feutre de carbone modifie par double couche d'hydroxide

Ganiyu, Soliu 02 December 2016 (has links)
La cathode préparée a montré une bonne capacité de réutilisation et peut constituer une alternative pour le traitement des eaux usées à des valeurs de pH naturel / Pharmaceuticals residues as emerging pollutants have become a major concern due to their persistence and continuous accumulation in various environmental compartments and their removal is one the major challenges of this century. Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) such as anodic oxidation (AO) and electro-Fenton (EF) have shown to be efficient techniques for complete degradation and mineralization of this class of pollutants. A substoichiometric titanium oxide (Ti4O7) deposited on titanium alloy by plasma elaboration was investigated as an alternative stable and efficient low cost anode materials for application in AO and EF for degradation of pharmaceuticals amoxicillin (AMX) and propranolol (PPN) and mineralization of their aqueous solutions. Excellent mineralization of both pharmaceuticals was achieved with Ti4O7 anode compared to dimensional stable anode (DSA) and platinum (Pt) anodes at similar experimental conditions, but less efficient when compared with boron doped diamond (BDD) anode during AO treatment. Almost complete mineralization (96%) was attained with Ti4O7 anode in EF degradation of PPN at 120 mA after 8 h of electrolysis. Several aromatic, bicyclic and other intermediate byproducts were identified and quantified during the electrochemical treatment of both pharmaceuticals, with the final end products in the treated solutions being short-chain carboxylic acids and inorganic ions. Plausible mineralization pathways for both pharmaceuticals were proposed based on the identified intermediates, released inorganic ions and carboxylic acids as well as TOC data. Initial AMX solution shows relatively high inhibition to V. fischeri bacteria, which further increased at the early stage of electrooxidation due to formation of cyclic intermediates more toxic than mother molecules but sharply decreased at the later stage of electrolysis. Since the Ti4O7 is produced mainly from TiO2 which is very cheap and highly abundant material, this anode material could be an interesting alternative electrode in industrial wastewater treatment by electrochemical oxidation. On the other hand, CoFe-layer double hydroxide modified carbon-felt (CoFe-LDH/CF) cathode synthesized by solvothermal process was studied as a heterogeneous catalyst/electrode for degradation of organic pollutant Acid Orange II (AO7) over a wide pH range. Excellent mineralization of this azo dye solution was achieved in pH range 2 – 7.1, with TOC removal much higher than corresponding homogeneous EF with raw carbon-felt (CF) at all pH studied. The prepared cathode exhibited good reusability and can constitute an alternative for the treatment wastewater effluents at neutral pH values

Relationships Between Felt Intensity And Recorded Ground Motion Parameters For Turkey

Bilal, Mustafa 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Earthquakes are among natural disasters with significant damage potential / however it is possible to reduce the losses by taking several remedies. Reduction of seismic losses starts with identifying and estimating the expected damage to some accuracy. Since both the design styles and the construction defects exhibit mostly local properties all over the world, damage estimations should be performed at regional levels. Another important issue in disaster mitigation is to determine a robust measure of ground motion intensity parameters. As of now, well-built correlations between shaking intensity and instrumental ground motion parameters are not yet studied in detail for Turkish data. In the first part of this thesis, regional empirical Damage Probability Matrices (DPMs) are formed for Turkey. As the input data, the detailed damage database of the 17 August 1999 Kocaeli earthquake (Mw=7.4) is used. The damage probability matrices are derived for Sakarya, Bolu and Kocaeli, for both reinforced concrete and masonry buildings. Results are compared with previous similar studies and the differences are discussed. After validation with future data, these DPMs can be used in the calculation of earthquake insurance premiums. In the second part of this thesis, two relationships between the felt-intensity and peak ground motion parameters are generated using linear least-squares regression technique. The first one correlates Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) to Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) whereas the latter one does the same for Peak Ground Velocity (PGV). Old damage reports and isoseismal maps are employed for deriving 92 data pairs of MMI, PGA and PGV used in the regression analyses. These local relationships can be used in the future for ShakeMap applications in rapid response and disaster management activities.

There are several therapies where the main is the surgery and in this case, the use of bone substitutes can be indicated. However the repair process may require assistance. Thus, the use of activated charcoal as bone substitute when the implementation of low-power laser to aid bone repair can be an alternative to these problems. The aim of this study was to verify the use of activated carbon felt as bone substitute and the interaction with the laser in the process of bone repair in rat tibias, assessing biochemical, histological and biomechanical changes. Material and methods: male wistar rats, 35 were used between 150 g to 200 g, with 3 months of age. The animals were anesthetized with ketamine hydrochloride and Association (90mg/Kg and 10mg/Kg, IP). Once anesthetized, the animals were put on surgical table, the skin was dissected and were made monocortical bone defects in the central region of the right tibia of mice. Immediately after surgery the rats were randomized and divided into the following groups: control (CTL), untreated Injury (NT), Lesion treated with activated carbon felt (AF), Lesion treated with lasertherapy (L6J) and Lesion treated with association of activated carbon felt and laser 830nm, 6J-100mW (AF+L). After 28 days the animals were euthanized with overdose of the same anesthetic, blood was collected and the tibia was taken for biochemical, histological and biomechanical analysis. Committee of ethics: AN00462014-UNINOVE. Results: the NT group reduction in bending forces and histological changes related to disorganization of the tissue. The group showed no L improve mechanical properties, whereas AF increase the strain in compare to CTL. AF+L group presented better flexion forces, related with improvement of histological aspects, however increased the alkaline phosphatase levels. Conclusion: the use of activated carbon felt seems to improve the bone repair induced in this study. The laser association with activated carbon felt showed improvement of biomechanical properties and still the histological results have a better aspect.

The research was carried through in a Nesting, located in the Zone of Mata of the State of Alagoas, when 65 living citizens of this nesting had been interviewed in the first stage and in the second stage nine citizens, of which only seven had been valid for the purposes of the research and construction of histories of life of the citizens, since the interviewed others had been monossilábicos in its answers. The analysis was guided by the theoretical referencial created by Vygotsky, searching subtexto (affective-volitional base) of it speaks of the interviewed ones to understand the directions and meanings of if becoming one seated agricultural one of the MST. With this analytical procedure one arrived it the following units of felt: Work, Education, Religion and Leisure, all they perpassadas by the unit of bigger direction that is the land. From the results it was arrived conclusion that the citizens had searched the MST for survival necessity, e had been potencializados for the action during all the period of fight for the land and construction of the nesting. When becoming seated agricultural, they were desmobilizaram for the action, with the attitude to wait for the other for the resolution of the problems of the nesting, with few spaces and moments of collective convivência, with the productive work and commercialization of the agricultural products almost always restricted to the lot and the family (in detriment of the collective production). The only factor of mobilization is the religion. All these results point with respect to a form of perverse and precarious inclusion by means of the agricultural nesting, where they lack convivência spaces, allotment and affection; assistance technique adjusted for the production and commercialization of the products; precarious access to the system of public health; unglued education of the reality of the nesting; precarious access to the nesting through roads without asphalt and badly conserved and predominance of the directions proclaimed for religious institutions, that they take them to wait, now, for the land promised in the sky.

Development of new macroscopic carbon materials for catalytic applications / Développement de nouveaux matériaux carbonés macroscopiques pour les applications en catalyse

Xu, Zhenxin 22 May 2019 (has links)
Nowadays, macroscopic carbon materials are facing an increasing number of applications in catalysis, either as supports or directly as metal-free catalysts on their own. However, it is still challenging to develop hierarchical carbon-based catalyst support or catalyst using a much simple synthesis process. In the quest for novel structured carbon materials for heterogeneous catalysis we explored the potential of commercial carbon/graphite felt (CF/GF). The aim of the work described in this thesis has been the development of GF and CF monolith as metal-free catalyst for gas-phase oxidation reactions and as catalyst support, notably for palladium, for liquid-phase hydrogenation reactions, and their roles in the reaction performance of these catalysts. Due to their inert chemistry surface with inappropriate wettability, a prerequisite for such a study was to activate the origin ones. Therefore, well-rounded modified GFs and CFs were synthesized with tailored physic-chemical properties by a series of chemical treatment processes, such as oxidation, amination, thiolation, nitrogen- and sulfur-doping. The partial oxidation of hydrogen sulfide into elemental sulfur and selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated cinnamaldehyde, as the sensitive test reactions to the influence of the catalyst properties on activity and selectivity, combined with characterization techniques, were chosen to investigate the effect of functionalized carbon materials on the catalytic behavior.

Attachment and Religion : An Integrative Developmental Framework

Granqvist, Pehr January 2002 (has links)

The aim of the thesis was to examine the applicability of attachment theory to adult and adolescent religiosity. Attachment theory is an empirically oriented research paradigm that takes evolutionary theory as the starting point in the study of child-parent relations and their socioemotional correlates in development. The work consisted of two interrelated tasks. First, limitations in theory and research in the psychology of religion, particularly the traditional psychodynamic perspectives, were highlighted, and attachment theory was proposed as an integrative framework to remedy some of those limitations. Second, four empirical studies (I-IV), based on attachment theoretical predictions, were conducted to investigate relations between individual differences in attachment and religiosity.

The combined results from the studies suggest the existence of two religiosity profiles in relation to attachment. Both profiles resemble influential descriptions of individual religiosity differences in the psychology of religion literature. The religiosity of individuals in the first profile is similar to their parents' religiosity and is likely to be stable over time. If religious changes have been experienced, these are likely to be gradual, to occur early in life, and in a context pointing to the importance of relationships with religious significant others. Such individuals' God image is likely to be loving, and not distant. It was hypothesized that these religiosity characteristics stern from experiences with sensitive attachment figures in childhood, and that such experiences have promoted partial adoption of the attachment figures' religious standards. The mental representations of attachment resulting from the favorable experiences were suggested to be responsible for a corresponding image of a loving God.

The religiosity of individuals in the second profile is independent of parental religiosity, and is likely to fluctuate (increase and decrease) over time. Their religious changes are more sudden and intense, occur relatively later in life, and in a context pointing to an emotionally supportive function for religion. Such individuals' God image is more distant, and less loving. These religiosity characteristics were hypothesized to stem from experiences with insensitive attachment figures in childhood. It was suggested that they reflect an affect regulation strategy to obtain/maintain a sense of felt security, and that God is utilized as a compensatory attachment-like figure in this regard.

Findings pertaining to the profiles generally emerged regardless of whether the design was cross-sectional (I-IV) or longitudinal (III); whether participants were adults (I, II, and IV) or adolescents (Study III); and whether attachment was assessed with self-report questionnaires (I-IV) or independent ratings based on a semi-structured interview (IV).

The Impacts of Reflective Practices on the Dispositions for Critical Thinking in Undergraduate Courses

Sable, David 20 August 2012 (has links)
The primary objective of this research was to determine if a specific set of reflective practices enhance university undergraduate students’ abilities to: 1) reflect on their thinking processes to become more aware of their own intellectual habits and how they form; 2) inquire with open-minded curiosity, including suspension of assumptions long enough for them to be challenged; and 3) generate justifiable, contextual understandings and judgments, individually and in collaboration. “Reflective practices” refers to a specific set of reflective learning activities introduced to undergraduates in two courses: mindfulness practice extended into journal writing, listening, inquiry and dialogue. The purpose of the reflective practices in this research was to support independent, critical thinking: well-reasoned, evaluative judgments based on evidence, contextual understanding, and respect for others. Students were instructed in both individual, introspective activity as well as in paired and group interaction while preserving a degree of mindfulness. Indicators of the dispositions for critical thinking were developed using grounded theory methods to study students’ experiences, as well as those dispositions previously identified in the research literature. Qualitative results showed increased self-confidence, engagement with multiple points of view, and an unexpected sense of connectedness that was stronger between students who disagreed with each other than between students who found easy agreement in their interaction. Quantitative results showed statistically significant gains in the average number of indicators of critical thinking dispositions appearing in student journals comparing week 1 to week 11. There was also positive correlation between final essay exam scores graded for critical thinking skills and the total number of indicators found in students’ journals. / This thesis presents primary research on the impacts of mindfulness applied to introspective and interactive learning activities in undergraduate university courses.
