Power, Social Identity and Fashion Consumption : A thesis on how female executives use power-coded dressing as a tool to accentuate power as a part of their social identity.

Ordonez Asenjo, Carolina January 2014 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the CCT research field on social identity, by placing a focus on power from a customer perspective and studying how power can be accentuated within social identity. Theory from CCT with a focus on social identity has been used in combination with extensive literature on power and authority from a sociological perspective and literature from Fashion-Studies focusing on power-dressing, conspicuous consumption and luxury. The research question is: How is power-dressing and consumption of high-end luxury fashion brands used by female executives/senior managers in an attempt to accentuate power as a part of their social identity? In-depth semi-structured interviews where used as the main data collection method interviewing five female senior managers/female executives working in Stockholm; using the fashion consumption of female senior managers as its empirical sample. The main conclusion on this thesis is the creation of the concept of power-coded-dressing.This thesis implications are that it develops the CCT field slightly by adding a consumer-power perspective into the theoretical discourse. Its practical and social implications help women accentuate their power through, power-coded-dressing.

The decision-making process to leave the audit profession : How female senior managers reach their decision to resign

Ly, Carita, Karsberg, Ulrika January 2022 (has links)
Background/problematization: The audit industry has historically been characterized by male dominance, and it has long been a problem to succeed in retaining women throughout the work life. Female senior managers are influenced by triggering factors that cause them to consider their continuation in the audit profession. A high number of women opt out audit firms especially at the senior managerial level and choose to restart elsewhere.   Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to understand the decision-making process of leaving the audit industry of midcareer female auditors. By studying the phenomenon from a life world perspective, it will be described as it is perceived by the women.    Methodology: The study is based on a narrative interview method with an abductive approach where the interviews were conducted with six former female senior managers from the audit industry who left less than 10 years ago. A thematic analysis was conducted in order to analyze the collected data.   Findings: The findings indicate that family, discrimination, heavy workload, job offer and renumeration are influencing factors during female senior managers’ decision-making process. Further, the findings show that the factors influence their decision to varying degrees in different stages of the process.

Kvinnliga elitinnebandyspelares skottprecision vid handledsskott : En jämförelse mellan två olika komplexitetsnivåer

Olsson, Lisa, Lindh, Johan January 2020 (has links)
Purpose The purpose of the study was to investigate the level of complexity in stationary wrist shot and wrist shot in motion at female elite floorball players. Furthermore, the study aimed to investigate the impact of the placement of the target and investigate whether there was any learning effect in repeated shots at the same target. Methods Eight participants took part of the study were two tests was performed with different complexity level. The first test was performed as a stationary wrist shot (SH) while test two was performed as a wrist shot in motion (HR). In total, each participant performed 40 shots per test divided in four hit targets (Tp). These were placed in the upper and lower part of the goal. The tests were recorded and analyzed afterwards where the x- and y-coordinates of the shots were determined. The test values were then analyzed in SPSS where Paired-Sample t-test was used and Pearsons correlation analysis. Results There was a significant difference in shot precision between HR and SH (t = -6,68, p = 0,0068). There was a significant difference in shot precision in HR between the nearest upper target and the far upper target (t = 3,58, p = 0,0090). The other nearest and farther targets in each test showed no significant difference (p > 0,05). There was no significant learning effect in SH or HR (p > 0,05).Conclusions Shot accuracy was affected by the complexity levels that existed between SH and HR. The result can be used by players and coaches as players can develop shot precision in movement moments and to shoot in the nearest upper target. No learning occurred by performing 10 shots at the same target which means that players may need more movement repetitions to achieve a short learning effect.

Understanding The Lived Experiences of Being a Woman Leader in a Technology Organization

Odoh, Anne N. January 2020 (has links)
Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of female senior managers in technology organizations and understand how they feel about themselves, their roles and their technology organizations. The study highlights the issues faced by women working in a gendered role, a masculine industry and a non-western, strong patriarchal society. Methodology/Design: A qualitative research methodology was adopted for this study. Eleven semi-structured interviews were used to collect empirical data from women senior managers in Nigerian technology organizations, which was thematically analyzed. Findings: The findings from this study indicate that women in technology are no longer reluctant to progress in this gendered career. Women technology leaders are ambitious and driven to scale the semantic barriers to top management roles. They experience workplace discrimination, insecurities and work-family conflicts, but do not punish themselves for sometimes dropping the ball. Rather, they show up to take on daunting assignments that prove their competence and choose to lead assertively in order to align their core values with the expectations of their role. Research Implications: This thesis makes a contribution to the wider literature on women leaders in technology by providing new insights on the role of patriarchal institutions in technology leadership, from a developing country in Africa. Practical Implications: Practical contributions are to support aspiring women in technology to fine-tune their leadership strategies in order to succeed in this gendered career and become beneficiaries of the vast opportunities in this dynamic industry. For technology organizations, to understand the issues faced by women leaders so that they can support women’s career aspirations by implementing and managing policies that support skilled and high-potential women employees to fulfill their career aspirations, and become change agents at the top management level. These efforts will disrupt stereotypes, change the narrative of inequalities in this industry and improve firm performance. Originality: This study is the first of its kind to focus on the role of patriarchal structures on women leaders’ careers in the technology industry within the context of an African society, which is rare in the literature on women leaders in technology.
