Female Voice In Jane Austen: Pride And Prejudice And Emma

Tanrivermis, Mihriban 01 November 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis analyses the devices manipulated by Jane Austen in Pride and Prejudice and Emma to foreground the &lsquo / female voice&rsquo / . The thesis argues that in these novels satire including irony and parody is used as a tool for revealing the place of women in eighteenth century England. In addition, themes and characters by which feminist conversations are constructed are also dealt with.

Excitable Boys: Male Dominance and Female Sexuality in Aphra Behn's The Rover and Thomas Middleton's A Chaste Maid in Cheapside

Ekholm, Jennifer 01 January 2018 (has links)
This paper investigates how Aphra Behn's The Rover and Thomas Middleton's A Chaste Maid in Cheapside complicate understandings of femininity and masculine dominance over female sexuality. The paper looks specifically at the "rake," and how he instigates questions about female identity and sexual assault. The paper also looks at the rake in regards to adulterous relationships. Finally, the paper analyzes the use of the female perspective in The Rover to highlight the importance of framing discussions about femininity and female sexuality outside of male discourse.

An Investigation of the Whistle Register in the Female Voice

Walker, Steven 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was concerned with specific elements of the portion of the female voice commonly referred to as whistle or flute register. Three elements of vocal production were chosen for which past research has demonstrated relationships to source function. These elements included spectral characteristics, airflow rates, and perceptual identification. The research compared what the singer-subjects perceived as being whistle register phonations with that which they perceived as being head register phonations. A comparative technique was utilized where pitch, intensity and phonemic category were held relatively constant, register, therefore, being the only variable. Spectral characteristics and airflow rates of the two subject-determined registers were compared. In addition, an attempt was made to determine if the whistle register could be perceptually differentiated on the basis of voice quality,

Earth Ascending: A Composition in Three Movements for Female Voice, Electroacoustic Music, and Video

Lillios, Elainie 08 1900 (has links)
Earth Ascending is a composition in three movements scored for female voice, electroacoustic music, and video. Composed in the Year 2000, Earth Ascending lasts approximately sixteen minutes and was created specifically for live performance in which all three elements combine to create a sonic and visual environment. As such, no single element has greater importance than any other, with each of the three performing forces assuming a foreground role at various times throughout the work. Earth Ascending is defined by a single poem written by contemporary female British poets Jeni Counzyn, Jehanne Mehta, and Cynthia Fuller. The movements are named according to the title of each poem: Earth-Body, Light-Body; Wringcliff Beach; and Pool. The movements are separated in performance by five seconds of silence and black on the video screen. The paper accompanying the score of Earth Ascending is divided into five chapters, each discussing in detail an element central to the composition itself. The Introduction presents background information, general ideas, and approaches undertaken when creating the work. Chapters 1 through 3 investigate in detail the content of the electroacoustic music, voice, and video. Chapter 4 discusses scoring techniques, revealing approaches and methods undertaken to solve issues relating to notation and ways of accurately representing sound, pitch, and rhythm within the context of a mixed media work. Chapter 5 presents information relevant to the live performance of the piece.

Aaron Johansson, Gabrielle January 2023 (has links)

Subjects were twenty normal newborn babies (seven female and thirteen male) with average weight of 3,300Kg and Apgar score of nine on the first and fifth minutes of life. The experiment used a multiple ABA or reversion design, alternating between periods of base-line and periods of verbal stimulation. Behavioral data were obtained through direct observation using behavioral sampling with fixed time interval. Recorded behaviors were: Orientation, Attention, Body movements, Crying, Vocalization and Non-nutritional suction. In this study, the variation of Orientation, through out the session, suggests that habituation occurred for female Motherese in general, especially for the maternal voice. Body movements indicate relation between the stimulus and the expectation of successive events, indicating recognition of maternal motherese. Cry response indicates a tendency to discriminate the infantilization of the maternal voice and also hold a singular relation with maternal verbal behavior during gestation. The occurrence Vocalizations in response to motherese might be related to the development of the emotional processing the language. The occurrence of Non-nutritional suction demonstrates the ability of the newborn to associate environmental stimulus to the received cares.

Ženský hlas v současné praxi historicky poučené interpretace barokní hudby v České republice / Female Voice in Contemporary Czech Practice of Historically Informed Interpretation of Baroque Music

Jägerová, Monika January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores specific ways of using female singing voice in subculture of historically informed performance of baroque music in the Czech republic. The thesis is based on principles of cultural theory and cultural analysis. Main source for my research were interviews from the years 2015 and 2016 held with female singers specialized in historically informed performance, and my own living experience first as voice student, later as a performer in the field of baroque music. I explore ways of fulfilling fundamental demand of the subculture for "historical authenticity" (which is usually defined as "how did the music sound at the time of its origin"). I come to key term of "naturalness" and I further explore how this concept is embodied by the singers, how it affects the sound of the voice and aesthetic expectations of the singers and also listeners. I put the experience of "authentic" and "natural" interpretation of baroque music in context of thinking about pleasure, especially in terms of jouissance and plaisir described by Roland Barthes.

Frida Kahlo, calor & frio - a escrita antropofágica, feminina e performativa do texto como ponto de partida de um experimento de criação e circulação / Frida Kahlo, calor & frio - the cannibalistic writing, feminine voice and performative text as starting points for an experience of creation and circulation

Dias, Viviane Costa 12 November 2015 (has links)
Is it possible a dialogue with myths in a theatrical text that, by its intrinsic characteristics, encourage a certain contemporary and Brazilian scene? The company has been dedicated since 2006 to the research and creation of play and the new texts. The cannibalistic political attitude bases the production - in artistic and academic interfaces - of this research. As conclusions, the research reveals dramaturgical attitudes that favored a dialogue with the survey questions: the mythical approach, as a constellation of images around a thematic core, and \"myth\" in its interrelationship with \"poetry\"; the creation of a hybrid structure of text from the traffic between different languages and the text in the perspective of a material of game. The variety of experiences with this text led to the occurrence of performativity of the word and the idea of an author performer. The indicated paths of the investigation can contribute to the search work and the practice of authors as well as actors, directors, performers and educators in theatre.

“To shape God, Shape Self”: The Political Manipulation of the Human Body and Reclamation of Space in Octavia E. Butler’s The Parable of the Sower

James, Lisa January 2018 (has links)
This paper considers the role of the human body in Octavia E. Butler’s The Parable of theSower and the way it interacts with defined space to stage expressive forms of politicalopposition. Understanding the relationship between physical or metaphorical space and thecontradictions of the societies they encompass is crucial to deciphering Butler’s near-futuredystopia; a world where the problems of real-life Los Angeles and Southern California aredistorted into a gross carnivalesque of gender stereotypes, sociopolitical tensions, and vigilante warfare. This paper places a special emphasis on the areas of social and political stagnation found in Butler’s vision of near-future L.A., and analyses the dangers of clinging to archaic, patriarchal systems that no longer resonate with contemporary audiences. Focus is also placed on potential methods of resistance against oppressive social institutions, particularly exploring the limitations met by protagonist, Lauren Oya Olamina, in her attempts to voice concerns in a society where language is so nuanced by “traditional” gendered qualities that the female voice carries no political value. This papers also questions theories which promote violent confrontation as a means to social reform, disregarding collateral damage and victims of war in favour of insurgency. By exploring the movement of the human body away from defined space, this paper supports Butler’s notion of alternative prosocial action which celebrates the margins of society, positing a nurturing, constructive means to resist political opposition.
