Ecology of the Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) in the Southern area of the Gulf of Morrosquillo, Colombia : implications for conservation

Dussán-Duque, Beatriz Salomé January 2013 (has links)
Sotalia guianensis is listed as “Data Deficient” by the IUCN and as “Vulnerable” in Colombia. This study aimed to advance understanding of the ecology of this species and its habitats, and to provide information to conservation management in the southern Gulf of Morrosquillo, Colombia. Systematic boat-based surveys were conducted during 395 days in 2002-2006 and 2009-2010, following established routes. Total survey effort was 15,199 km in an area covering ~ 310km². Fine scale habitat use and behavioural modelling, photo-identification and mark-recapture techniques were used to analyze the ecological patterns for this species. The most recent abundance estimate of dolphins using the study area during dry and rainy seasons, varied from 225 (CV = 0.34; 95% CI: 118-426) to 232 (CV = 0.32; 95% CI: 127-246). Annual survival rate is estimated at 0.948 (95% CI = 0.876-0.980). Overall density was 0.74/km². Dolphins were present year-round in the whole study area. Results indicate that they do not use the study area uniformly and that the use of particular zones is related to eco-geographic variables. Dolphins showed a preference for waters greater than 3m in depth with a slightly increased preference for waters about 5m and 15-25m deep. The average group size was nine individuals. Some individuals show long-term high site fidelity to some zones within the study site boundaries. Even though the site fidelity to feeding areas varied individually, all the individuals focused primarily on one specific area. Foraging was among one of the most predominant behaviours observed. The individual movements show that some dolphins use both bay and gulf waters. Dolphins show a range of surface cooperative foraging and feeding strategies. These cooperative behaviours were influenced by zone, group size and prey type. Based on these results an area of special management for the species will be created in Colombia.

With or without you : pair fidelity and divorce in monogamous birds

Culina, Antica January 2014 (has links)
The drivers of fidelity and divorce of pair-bonded individuals, along with their fitness consequences, are of great interest as they influence mating systems, population structure and productivity, and gene flow. Socially monogamous birds offer an ideal opportunity to study divorce since they show great variability in the extent to which pair bonds are maintained. However, there has been little consensus as to whether divorce is a behavioural adaptation to improve a mating situation, or a consequence of other processes. Moreover, the biological and ecological correlates of fidelity are difficult to address because previous work has been based on indirect and potentially biased methods. Finally, in terms of process, the link between the process of mate choice and subsequent mating decisions has been largely inaccessible to study. My doctoral thesis addressed these significant gaps in our understanding of cause, process and consequence in the formation and dissolution of pair bonds in socially monogamous birds. I accomplished this in three principal ways. First, I conducted a robust phylogenetic meta-analysis on 84 studies across 64 species to assess the existing empirical evidence that divorce in socially monogamous birds is adaptive (in terms of breeding success). This analysis revealed that divorce is, in general, adaptive as it is both triggered by relatively low breeding success and leads to improvement in success. Next, I developed a novel probabilistic multievent capture–mark–recapture framework that provides joint estimates of survival and fidelity while explicitly accounting for imperfect detection, capture heterogeneity, and uncertainty in pair status. By applying this model to breeding data on a wild great tit population I showed that birds that remain faithful to their partner exhibit higher survival rates and are more likely to remain faithful in the next breeding season than do birds that change partners. Subsequently, I confirmed the generality of a survival benefit by applying the model to breeding data on other tit populations. Then, by applying the model to data from a population of mute swans, I showed that fidelity decreases the likelihood of skipping breeding and mortality in this long-lived species, and that these effects depended on age, individual quality, and immigration status. Finally, I investigated how the timing of pair formation influences breeding success and divorce probability using five years of data on the over-winter social behaviour of great tits. I showed that early pair formation had a positive effect on fitness components, influencing the likelihood of divorce only indirectly, through breeding success. Further, my work revealed that males, but not females, with higher numbers of the female associates in winter, and males whose future breeding partners were ranked low amongst these, divorced more often. My research makes a significant contribution to our understanding of divorce and fidelity, and generates a number of important implications for future studies. First, my work establishes that divorce is adaptive for breeding success. Second, my results highlight that survival is an important (and likely, widespread) fitness consequence of pairing decisions. Third, I provide a novel statistically rigorous modelling framework for estimating fidelity-rates and testing hypothesis about fidelity that overcomes many of the inherent biases in traditional estimates. Fourth, it provides the first evidence for a selective advantage of early pair formation in wild, thus highlighting that there are benefits to pair familiarity that manifest via social associations of individuals prior to breeding. Finally, my work reveals the selective pressures operating via the social environment can ultimately influence the mating strategies individuals adopt.

Leung, Christelle 10 1900 (has links)
Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) is a commercially-exploited freshwater fish species in Lake Saint-Pierre (Quebec, Canada). Even if this fluvial lake is designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, the yellow perch status is of concern. To ensure the persistence of species facing to anthropogenic pressures, understanding dynamics and mechanism that structure populations are of major importance. Because the habitat characteristics are spatially structured and this species is known to display natal site fidelity, a subdivision of the species in multiple populations and local adaptations may occur. It is possible to detect these processes according to genetic signal associated with individuals’ reproduction. However, low genetic differentiation is hypothesised due to the recent colonization of the system (< 8 K years). This study aims at determining if there are multiple populations of yellow perch in Lake Saint-Pierre. Simulations was first performed to confirm that population differentiation is better depicted by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) than microsatellite markers. In order to associate individuals to their site of birth, larvae captured after hatching were used. A survey of the variation throughout the entire genome was then performed by using the AFLP approach and variations at microsatellite loci were used to further investigate the organization of these populations. Three distinct AFLP analyses indicated a correlation between genetic composition of individuals and spawning sites, and thus confirmed the presence of multiple sympatric populations in Lake Saint-Pierre, resulting likely from natal site fidelity. At the opposite, the lack of genetic differentiation reported by microsatellites markers confirms the importance of the choice of genetic markers. While the genetic differentiation is very low, the management of this species should take into account the existence of distinct population structures in this system.

Comparaison de traductions du début, du milieu et de la fin du XXe siècle de Dama Sobackoj d’Anton Pavlovic Cehov du russe en français, en anglais et en espagnol / The development of the translation from Russian into French, English and Spanish in the XXth century (A comparison between the translations of the beginning, the middle and the end of the century of "The lady and the little dog" by Anton Cexov

Peterson, Marinette 06 April 2013 (has links)
Is the translation from Russian, English and Spanish developing over time ? It is developing the same way in French, English and Spanish ? In other words, do the French, the English and the Spanish translators obey the same rules ? The comparison of the translations of the beginning, the middle and the end of the XXth century of nine excerpts from "The lady and the little dog" by Anton Cexov is a way to spot the differences between the translations in the three languages. On the other hand, it is also necessary to know about the slow progress of translation since the time of Cicero and St Jerome, the various theories expressed through the centuries, the various solutions proposed for the passage from one language to another, the figures of speech presented by the theorists to define the act of tanslating. Also an insight into Cexov's life and work helps the comparison, sentence by sentence, world by world and allow to assess the progress of translation and to define the art of translating.

REDUCED FIDELITY ANALYSIS OF COMBUSTION INSTABILITIES USING FLAME TRANSFER FUNCTIONS IN A NONLINEAR EULER SOLVER

Gowtham Manikanta Reddy Tamanampudi (6852506) 02 August 2019 (has links)
<p>Combustion instability, a complex phenomenon observed in combustion chambers is due to the coupling between heat release and other unsteady flow processes. Combustion instability has long been a topic of interest to rocket scientists and has been extensively investigated experimentally and computationally. However, to date, there is no computational tool that can accurately predict the combustion instabilities in full-size combustors because of the amount of computational power required to perform a high-fidelity simulation of a multi-element chamber. Hence, the focus is shifted to reduced fidelity computational tools which may accurately predict the instability by using the information available from the high-fidelity simulations or experiments of single or few-element combustors. One way of developing reduced fidelity computational tools involves using a reduced fidelity solver together with the flame transfer functions that carry important information about the flame behavior from a high-fidelity simulation or experiment to a reduced fidelity simulation.</p> <p> </p> <p>To date, research has been focused mainly on premixed flames and using acoustic solvers together with the global flame transfer functions that were obtained by integrating over a region. However, in the case of rockets, the flame is non-premixed and distributed in space and time. Further, the mixing of propellants is impacted by the level of flow fluctuations and can lead to non-uniform mean properties and hence, there is a need for reduced fidelity solver that can capture the gas dynamics, nonlinearities and steep-fronted waves accurately. Nonlinear Euler equations have all the required capabilities and are at the bottom of the list in terms of the computational cost among the solvers that can solve for mean flow and allow multi-dimensional modeling of combustion instabilities. Hence, in the current work, nonlinear Euler solver together with the spatially distributed local flame transfer functions that capture the coupling between flame, acoustics, and hydrodynamics is explored.</p> <p> </p> <p>In this thesis, the approach to extract flame transfer functions from high-fidelity simulations and their integration with nonlinear Euler solver is presented. The dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) was used to extract spatially distributed flame transfer function (FTF) from high fidelity simulation of a single element non-premixed flame. Once extracted, the FTF was integrated with nonlinear Euler equations as a fluctuating source term of the energy equation. The time-averaged species destruction rates from the high-fidelity simulation were used as the mean source terms of the species equations. Following a variable gain approach, the local species destruction rates were modified to account for local cell constituents and maintain correct mean conditions at every time step of the nonlinear Euler simulation. The proposed reduced fidelity model was verified using a Rijke tube test case and to further assess the capabilities of the proposed model it was applied to a single element model rocket combustor, the Continuously Variable Resonance Combustor (CVRC), that exhibited self-excited combustion instabilities that are on the order of 10% of the mean pressure. The results showed that the proposed model could reproduce the unsteady behavior of the CVRC predicted by the high-fidelity simulation reasonably well. The effects of control parameters such as the number of modes included in the FTF, the number of sampling points used in the Fourier transform of the unsteady heat release, and mesh size are also studied. The reduced fidelity model could reproduce the limit cycle amplitude within a few percent of the mean pressure. The successful constraints on the model include good spatial resolution and FTF with all modes up to at least one dominant frequency higher than the frequencies of interest. Furthermore, the reduced fidelity model reproduced consistent mode shapes and linear growth rates that reasonably matched the experimental observations, although the apparent ability to match growth rates needs to be better understood. However, the presence of significant heat release near a pressure node of a higher harmonic mode was found to be an issue. This issue was rectified by expanding the pressure node of the higher frequency mode. Analysis of two-dimensional effects and coupling between the local pressure and heat release fluctuations showed that it may be necessary to use two dimensional spatially distributed local FTFs for accurate prediction of combustion instabilities in high energy devices such as rocket combustors. Hybrid RANS/LES-FTF simulation of the CVRC revealed that it might be necessary to use Flame Describing Function (FDF) to capture the growth of pressure fluctuations to limit cycle when Navier-Stokes solver is used.</p> <p> </p> <p>The main objectives of this thesis are:</p> <p>1. Extraction of spatially distributed local flame transfer function from the high fidelity simulation using dynamic mode decomposition and its integration with nonlinear Euler solver</p> <p>2. Verification of the proposed approach and its application to the Continuously Variable Resonance Combustor (CVRC).</p> <p>3. Sensitivity analysis of the reduced fidelity model to control parameters such as the number of modes included in the FTF, the number of sampling points used in the Fourier transform of the unsteady heat release, and mesh size.</p> <p> </p> <p>The goal of this thesis is to contribute towards a reduced fidelity computational tool which can accurately predict the combustion instabilities in practical systems using flame transfer functions, by providing a path way for reduced fidelity multi-element simulation, and by defining the limitations associated with using flame transfer functions and nonlinear Euler equations for non-premixed flames.</p> <p> </p><br>

No. of bitstreams: 1 Paula Fernanda Prado Pereira.pdf: 1670141 bytes, checksum: a1fae6268d9fbba622c17b483329d479 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-18 / The main purpose of the present essay is to verify to what extent the Relationship Marketing strategies may contribute to the increase in fidelity rates among customers in the drugstore/pharmacy chains in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, always searching for solutions to the issues arising from the vast competition in the segment today. The relevance of this theme is clear when one observes the difficulty found nowadays by organizations, in the most diverse market segments, in trying to make their trademarks able to conquer and retain customers, and gaining the customer fidelity. The research was of the exploratory kind, and the quantity methodological approach was conducted through a survey. This one was created from a question form with closed questions which enabled pre-determined answers and, aiming a certain degree of flexibility, some questions were half-open, making it possible for the interviewed to give an individual and specific answer. The sample was of the non-probability kind and counted on the participation of 232 individuals, who came to compose 108 valid question forms, according to three filter criteria adopted. Individuals belonging to classes A1, A2, B1 and B2 were chosen (even though they represent only 29% of the total Brazilian population), because it is believed that the Relationship Programs focus their efforts in people belonging to those classes. The application strategy adopted was the sending of the form through the Internet, using the website http://www.surveymonkey.com. A link for the research was sent to the email of the responding people, along with an invitation for taking part. Based on this research, it was possible to conclude that the process of client fidelity search in the segment of pharmacy and drugstores still remains in need of a deeper analysis, given that it was made clear that the Relationship Marketing was not the only and main requirement for client fidelity in that segment / O objetivo geral da presente dissertação foi verificar como as estratégias de Marketing de Relacionamento podem contribuir para o aumento do índice de fidelidade dos clientes de redes de farmácias/drogarias da cidade de São Paulo, buscando-se soluções para os problemas da vasta concorrência que a maioria das redes enfrentam atualmente.

A cognitive mechanism for vertical handover and traffic steering to handle unscheduled evacuations of the licensed shared access band

Fernandez, Jean Eli Cerrillo January 2017 (has links)
There has been a steady growth in the traffic generated by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), and by 2020 it is expected to overload the existing licensed spectrum capacity and lead to the problem of scarce resources. One method to deal with this traffic overload is to access unlicensed and shared spectrum bands using an opportunistic approach. The use of Licensed Shared Access (LSA) is a novel approach for spectrum sharing between the incumbent user (i.e., the current owner of the shared spectrum) and the LSA licensee (i.e., the temporary user of frequencies, such as an MNO). The LSA system allows the incumbent users to temporarily provide the LSA licensee with access to its spectrum resources. However, licensees must adopt vertical handover and traffic steering procedures to vacate their customers from the LSA band without causing interference, whenever this is required by the incumbent. These procedures should be carried out, de facto, before the base station is turned off as a part of a rapid release of unscheduled LSA band facing evacuation scenarios. Thus, in this dissertation, a cognitive mechanism is proposed to make decisions in advance to find the best target network(s) for evacuated customers in connected mode and with active traffic per class of service. On the basis of these decisions, the vertical handover and traffic steering procedures are carried out for the best target network(s), which are selected in advance and undertaken immediately to avoid interference between the licensee and incumbent services. Furthermore, this guarantees the seamless connectivity and QoS of evacuated customers and their traffic respectively, during and after the unscheduled evacuation scenarios. A performance evaluation conducted in a simulating scenario consisting of one LTE-LSA and three Wi-Fi networks, demonstrated that the proposed solution could be completed within the time required for the unscheduled evacuation, as well as, being able to ensure the QoS and seamless connectivity of the evacuees. The total execution time obtained during the performance evaluation of the proposed solution was around 46% faster than of two related works and could thus avoid interference between the licensee and incumbent services.

A DEBRIEFING TECHNIQUE IN HIGH-FIDELITY PATIENT SIMULATION AND COMPETENT DECISION-MAKING ABILITIES AMONG NURSING STUDENTS

Seago, Trena 01 January 2016 (has links)
Nursing faculty are utilizing high-fidelity patient simulation (HPS) with debriefing to help engage nursing students in making competent clinical decisions. This quasi-experimental study examined the use of HPS with debriefing and students’ ability to make nursing care decisions using standardized exams. The experimental group received debriefing after HPS and the control group did not receive debriefing after HPS. The pre- and post-test assessed participants’ ability to make clinical care decisions. The analysis of the pre-test and post-test HESI scores showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups.

Brembs, Gunhild January 2004 (has links)
The present study investigates the translation of dialectal elements in literary texts from the German and Swedish linguistical and cultural areas. Translation theory generally advises against the translation of dialectal elements in standard language texts thereby implicitly questioning their creative and communicative function. The aim of the study is to investigate to what extent the dialectal elements in the source text are translated by corresponding dialectal elements in the target text thereby promoting a "cultural transfer" or whether a translation method based on translation theory is used. The linguistic material from the novels Die Räuberbande by the German author Leonhard Frank, Tjärdalen by the Swedish author Sara Lidman and Kapten Nemos bibliotek by the Swedish author Per Olov Enquist is microanalyzed. In doing so, the phonetical-phonological, morphological and syntactical dialectal features in the three source texts are treated methodically and are exemplarily and systematically presented together with their translation variants in the target language. The study focuses mainly on the translations of dialectal lexicology, which is investigated according to its contrastive function regarding the translations of standard language, thereby examining its adequacy. By including all the dialectal lexemes appearing in the works and their translations empirical dates have been compiled as a result of the translation methods. The study´s analyses demonstrate that dialectal elements are mainly translated into standard language, that a large part of dialectisms is paraphrased and that a small part is rendered by spoken language without regional limits. A tendency towards increasing use of dialectal elements through the times can be detected as well as a propensity to adapt the translation to the stylistical preferences in the receiving country. Thus, "cultural transfer" is not promoted.

Construct validity of situational judgment tests: An examination of the effects of agreeableness, organizational leadership culture, and experience on SJT responses

Shoemaker, Jonathan Adam 01 June 2007 (has links)
Numerous factors are likely to influence response patterns to situational judgment tests, including agreeableness, leadership style, impression management, and job and organizational experience. This research presents background information and research on situational judgment tests and several constructs hypothesized to influence situational judgment test responses. A situational judgment test and manipulations to influence response patterns were developed and piloted with a small sample of management professionals and undergraduate students. Larger samples of management professionals and undergraduate students participated in the experimental research. Participants were asked to imagine that they are applying for a job. Each participant was presented with background information about a fictitious company, describing a company as either highly Participative/Supportive or highly Directive/Achieving in its leadership culture. A third description provided no information about leadership culture to serve as a control. Participants responded to a situational judgment test consisting of some commercially developed items and some new items. Then participants responded to an inventory comprised of items that measure the factors hypothesized to influence response patterns, specifically Agreeableness and Experience. Significant differences in response patterns were determined to be attributable to the Agreeableness and Experience variables, and the Leadership Culture manipulations, as well as the interaction between Experience and the Leadership Culture manipulations. No significant differences were clearly attributable to the Agreeableness by Leadership Culture interaction. The ramifications of these findings are discussed and recommendations for future research are presented.
