Football en guerre : l’acculturation sportive de la population française pendant la Grande Guerre (1914-1919) / Football in war : sporting acculturation of french populations during the Great War (1914-1919)

Waquet, Arnaud 03 December 2010 (has links)
During the First World War, France knew an intense development of sport who marked a turning point in French sport and cultural history. Indeed, on the Western front, the interpenetration between Allied soldiers, who had a modern sporting culture, and the French civilians and soldiers, educated by patriotic gymnastic, elicited a sporting acculturation and a modernization of the French cultural and sporting model. Through the study of football and using an anthropo-historic analysis framework, this doctoral work focused on the effects of the interpenetration of different cultural groups in the transformation of “sport in war”. After describing the French sporting trend before contact, seven studies showed the results of primary, symbolic and in-group contacts on the French sporting acculturation. We analysed a) the construction of an intercultural and sporting melting pot during war in France, b) the dissemination of football within the Poilus, c) the development of football in British garrison towns, d) the legitimatization and mediatization of football during the war, e) the reinforcement of international dimensions of French football, f) the construction of sporting masculinity during the war, and g) the ruralisation of football in army zones. A wide-range of sources were consulted to obtain the current results. The British and French military archives, several personal notebooks of soldiers, and regimental registers were the basis of our study. Moreover, the national sporting press, the local press of army zones and the press of the trenches were consulted to follow the theoretical framework and to obtain additional information about football during the war. Finally, audio, photo and video recordings of British and French armies were analysed to support our comments and attest the French passion for sport during the war. To conclude, this doctoral thesis defined football as a feature of the culture of the Great War, and the sporting winner of the First World War

Repression and articulation of war experience : a study of the literary culture of Craiglockhart War Hospital

Schaupp, Anne-Catriona January 2018 (has links)
Prior study of Craiglockhart War Hospital has focused on the hospital's two most famous patients, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, along with the work of the psychotherapist W. H. R. Rivers. Craiglockhart's literary culture is studied in detail for the first time in this thesis and the hospital's therapeutic ethos used as a framework by which the creative work produced at the hospital can be examined. This thesis argues that the British Army's lack of consensus regarding the best treatment of war neuroses facilitated the development of Craiglockhart's expressive culture, in which patients were encouraged both to articulate their wartime memories and return to purposeful activity. The hospital's magazine, The Hydra, is examined at length; both in terms of its links to the wider genre of wartime soldier publications and as a telling document of the hospital's therapies in action. Owen and Sassoon's time at the hospital is also discussed, with particular emphasis on the hospital's central importance in Owen's poetic development and its troubling legacy in the post-war life of Sassoon. Finally, readers are introduced to George Henry Bonner, a patient of the hospital whose creative work is discussed here for the first time. This study makes clear the fact that, for the hospital's literary-minded patients, creative endeavour was an ideal means by which to negotiate the movement away from repression to the articulation of their wartime experiences.

1914-1918 ˸ les années grises : L'expérience des civils dans l'Aisne occupée / 1914-1918 ˸ the grey years : Experience of civilians in occupied Aisne

Salson, Philippe 11 November 2013 (has links)
This study intends to explore how German occupation during the Great War redefines socialconfigurations and interdependencies among civilian populations. Analyzing a limited arealike Aisne provides us an opportunity of drilling in social reality, from mezzo to micro scale.Comparing experiences within the 'département', on the basis of numerous accounts gathered, allows us to outline the contours of a specific violence during military occupation which is notonly the violence of German armies. The perception of municipal governments accounts for anew balance of power at local level : mayors, considered by occupier as the only legalauthorities, have to define with him acceptable ways of cooperation. At the same time, theymust renew their practices to respond to social emergencies and orders of Germancommanders. Finally, at the individual level, strategies and perceptions of civilians areexamined as those of social actors within local communities. This brings us to gauge both theextent of tensions and the duplicity towards occupying authority, duplicity which does notexclude different types of meetings and agreements with enemy soldiers.

Réintégrer les départements annexés : le gouvernement et les services d’Alsace-Lorraine (1914-1919) / Returning to motherland : French government and the public administration of Alsace-Lorraine (1914-1919)

Schmauch, Joseph 01 December 2016 (has links)
From 1915, the French government develops political and administrative plans for Alsace-Lorraine in case of a victorious peace. For that purpose, different organizations are involved in the conception of orientations to be applied after war. Following the armistice, a decree puts three commissars of the French Republic, in residence at Strasbourg, Metz and Colmar, in charge of prefectural duties. This study, about the civil organizations in charge of Alsace-Lorraine during the First World War, lies within an administrative, but also political frame. It is dealing with the positioning of French authorities, facing a substitution of sovereignty: definition of an administrative system, adaptation of the existent laws, integration into the French economic space, orientations to be given in the fields of language, scholarship or religion. It questions the practices of government in a context of war and of redefinition of the relations between State and regional power. The geographical frame, in which this research is inscribed, leads necessarily to make comparisons with the reflections about the future of Alsace-Lorraine in case of an imperial victory, that are taking place in Germany in the same time. The analysis will first deal with the projects, which are developed by the organizations in charge of preparing the future of the annexed provinces. To underline this French wish of a return of Alsace-Lorraine, the study will also be handling with the organizations in charge of “inspire love toward France”. The thesis will also be dealing with the different organizations in charge to govern concretely Alsace and Lorraine, in a first time the only territories in Upper-Alsace, that are occupied by the French armies, and during the months that are following November the 11th 1918, the entire the three departments in totality.

Slaget om Liège : lärdomar från fasta försvar / The battle of liège : Lessons from fixed fortifications

Edvinsson, Johan January 2011 (has links)
Belgium had declared herself neutral in the conflict between the central powers and the allied but was still invaded. The Belgian defence revolved largely around the political will to remain neutral and was therefore ill prepared in either direction. Germany’s first attack struck at the great fortresses outside Liège. The defence of this town was tied to the local forts, which had been erected some 40 years before. The outnumbered defenders with poorly executed preparations were able to perform well against the German might. The use of forts is an old practice in war but there are still lessons to be learned from its utilisation. This study is a theory constructive case study based on a quality text study. Therefore, the battle with its pros and cons of the use of forts are presented in an attempt to derive reasonable conclusions towards the use of fixed fortifications These facts led me to form a foundation of a theory on the usefulness of fixed fortifications.

Peace and Mind: Religion, Race, and Gender among Progressive Intellectuals and Activists

Humphries, David 06 August 2007 (has links)
This paper explores how changing conceptions of religion, race, and gender at the beginning of the twentieth century promoted transnational anti-systemic movements and increased cooperation between progressive intellectuals and political activists. Using the cases of Bertrand Russell, George Bernard Shaw, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Jane Addams, and Sylvia Pankhurst, this paper chronicles and analyzes protest to the First World War and objection to the organization of the world-system.

Birth of a Regiment, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry 1914-1919

Kempling, James S. 05 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis uses a web site as its primary format. Readers are invited to visit www.birthofaregiment.com. Financed by a wealthy Montreal businessman, the original regiment was very British in its make-up. The Patricia’s were recruited and trained separate from the Canadian Expeditionary Force. For the first year of the war, they fought in a British brigade, under British officers using British weapons. By 1919, the PPCLI were distinctly Canadian. The Patricia’s became the best known Canadian regiment and one of three retained in the permanent force. This thesis examines that remarkable transition, the changes wrought by the war and the mechanisms used to reinforce the unique image of the Patricia’s. It also tests several myths embodied in the histories of the Regiment against a database of over five thousand files of soldiers who served with the Patricia’s during the First World War. / Graduate

Les ruines de guerre et la nation française (1914-1921) / Ruins of War and the French Nation (1914-1921)

Danchin, Emmanuelle 17 December 2012 (has links)
This PhD work focuses on the material destruction caused by the Great War and more specifically on the way French society used the representations of ruins as a symbol of pain. As a first direct and visible consequence of conflict, ruins bear testimony to it, to its course, but also to the suffering of soldiers and civilian populations. Everybody, from the official military artist, the anonymous soldier to the ordinary citizen, evoked the material destruction, the desolate landscapes and the earth upheaved by artillery shells during the First World War. Photographed, drawn, filmed, exhibited in Paris, London or Geneva, the representations of ruins were shown in newspapers, they have been distributed as postcards and have also been reproduced in various works. These iconographic representations were used from the very beginning of the conflict to support the arguments used to mobilize populations and convince neutral countries of the validity of the war. They then became a way of making the conflict visible, but especially to testify the new violence caused by artillery. The Literary descriptions presented them as living, wounded bodies, as anthropomorphic transpositions of the soldiers whose bodies were rarely displayed. Targets of armed violence, symbolic bodies and fragile, ruins have embodied first of all the body of the warrior and subsequently the sacred body of the Nation. Once peace had been restored, the ruins were mobilized one last time to reinforce the demands for war reparations. They were also honoured through decorative ceremonies and valued through organized tourist tours. Since then the debate around ruins has been minimized to a question of their conservation as remnants of war.
