[en] CHILDHOOD AND JUVENILE CANCER: SIBLINGS, THE CHILDREN NO ONE SEES / [pt] CÂNCER INFANTO-JUVENIL: IRMÃOS, AS CRIANÇAS QUE NINGUÉM VÊ

ANA VALÉRIA PARANHOS MICELI 12 July 2018 (has links)
[en] This paper contemplates the repercussions of childhood and juvenile cancer on the patients siblings. Cancer is presented as a serious illness that threatens the family s structure affecting all of its members. Since cancer is always related to death in social imagination, the family reproduces the silent conspiracy around the theme, creating obstacles to the free circulation of information about the disease and its treatment, leaving children subject to their own fantasies about the illness and treatment of their sibling. The parents, specially the mother, are frequently absent due to prolonged hospitalizations, affecting the other children who suffer important changes in their routine and are equivocally demanded to mature more rapidly. Qualitative field research was done with seven siblings, ages between 8 and 16, using semi-structured interviews whose content was analyzed in four categories: representations about illness and death; about emotions concerning the sick brother/sister; about loss and about the environment and its changes. The results point towards feelings also observed in other studies (sadness, loneliness, rejection, jealousy, rage, guilt, resentment, dissatisfaction with the information received, fear of death, feelings of loss and abandonment, complaints about the physical and emotional absence of parents, rivalry with other siblings, rupture in normality and safety in the family, changes in roles and family relationships; diminution of social life and even social isolation; scholastic difficulties; impoverishment of life’s quality; somatic complaints and preoccupation with one s own health; feelings of compassion; of maturity, of more responsibility, and of independence; increased perceptiveness and commitment; desire of more family cohesion) and also to shame, envy, altruism, heroism, and the kids expectation of having their own efforts recognized. We have interpreted and discussed the results in the light of psychoanalytic viewpoints and concluded that cancer disrupts the family with traumatic force not only due to its characteristics and association with death, but moreover, due to the sensation of helplessness and the exclusion felt by the healthy siblings. The disease and its developments bring out something incomprehensible to the child that was unprepared for the event and still was not capable of a mature reaction to the fact. This environmental failure, a flaw in the caring of the child can be lived as traumatic with short, medium and long term effects, demanding more attention and care of these siblings. However, they get neither familiar, social, scholastic or support of the health team, because these are the children no one sees.

IMPLICAÇÕES DO CÂNCER INFANTIL NA DINÂMICA FAMILIAR / IMPLICATIONS OF CHILDHOOD CANCER ON FAMILY DYNAMICS

Salvagni, Adelise 28 March 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present study has as objective to know the implications of childhood cancer on family dynamics. To this end, it was conducted with a clinical study-qualitative comprising three case studies with families of children who had received the diagnosis of childhood cancer and carried out treatment in a city in southern Brazil. The data collection were through semi-guided interviews with parents and teenage brothers; with children, both the patient and their younger brothers, applied the technique of drawing the family with story; In addition, observations were performed at the hospital and the homes of the families. The data were submitted to content analysis. The results are presented in three articles, so that each one of them deals with a case and emphasizes one of the family relations. One of them treats on the marital relationship, the other about parental and, finally, one about the fraternal relationship. The article that reflects about the conjugal subsystem demonstrates that the conjugal relationship is affected by the experience of the child illness, which it demands by the couples adjustments and reorganization of roles. There is a union between the spouses; however, it occurs in the direction to the child care, while the intimate aspects of the relationship are in the background at the beginning of the treatment. The second article, which addresses parenting facing the situation of illness, suggests that the focus of the family are intended for child care at this point. As a result, there is an approximation between parents and the fallen ill daughter and a withdrawal from the other daughters. The third and final article, which discusses the fraternal relationship in the context of the disease, points to a relationship of unity and care between the brothers to deal with the situation and take account of the absence of the mother in the home environment. Considering the results presented, it can be said that, generally speaking, families joined together to confront the event. In view of this context, it can be conclude on the importance of studies and actions in health that may consider the family on systemic vision, in order to understand the interrelation between family subsystems in these terms and foment health promotion programs that may consider all the families and not just those who engage directly with the child care at the hospital.

Daughters of Ruth : enterprising black women in insurance in the New South, 1890s to 1930s

Garrett-Scott, Shennette Monique 16 June 2011 (has links)
The dissertation explores the imbricated nature of race, gender, and class in the field of insurance within the political economy of the New South. It considers how enterprising black women navigated tensions between New South rhetoric and Jim Crow reality as well as sexism and racism within the industry and among their industry peers. It complicates the narrative of black southern labor history that focuses more on women as agricultural laborers, domestics, and factory workers than as enterprising risk takers who sought to counterbalance personal ambition and self-interest with communal empowerment. Insurance organizations within black-run secret fraternal societies and formal black-owned insurance companies emerged as not only powerful symbols of black business achievement by the early decades of the twentieth century but also the most lucrative business sector of the separate black economy. Negro Captains of Industry, a coterie of successful, influential, self-made men, stood at the forefront; they represented the keystone of black economic, social, and political progress. The term invoked a decidedly masculinist image of “legitimate” leadership of black business. Considering fraternal and formal insurance, gender-inscribed rhetoric, shaped by racism and New South ideology, imagined black men as the ideal protectors and providers; women became the objects of protection rather than agents of economic development, job creation, and financial security. The dissertation explores how women operated creatively within and outside of normative expectations of their role in the insurance business. The dissertation considers the role of state regulation and zealous regulators who often targeted insurance organizations and companies, the primary symbols of black business success; in other ways, regulation dramatically improved profitability and stability. The dissertation identifies three key periods: the Pre-Regulatory Era, 1890s to 1906; the Era of Regulation, 1907-World War I; and the Professionalization of Black Insurance, Post-WWI to the Great Depression. It also considers the barriers to black women’s involvement in professional organizations. By the late 1930s, enterprising women in insurance lost ground as fraternal insurance waned in influence and as the strongest proponents of the black separate economy promoted a vision that embraced women as consumers rather than business owners. / text

To tax or to credit. Tax reforms and revolutions in socialist political economies in the 19 th century France

Coste, Clément 29 September 2016 (has links)
Histories of economic thought are relatively discrete with regards to the socialist political economies which developed in France during the 1830s and 1840s. This dissertation aims to reconsider relevant writings before putting them into the context of the history of political economy. The tax system is the starting point of this study. It is thought of as the meeting point between the political and economic spheres: the tax system is envisaged as a state apparatus, able to catalyze, to structure and to neutralize the regulatory power of the market. An interest in tax thus takes into account socialist viewpoints revolving around the independencies between the State and the market. This dissertation focusses on two maintraditions. Firstly, in Saint-Simonian political economy, embodied amongst others by Barthélémy Prosper Enfantin, Michel Chevalier, Alphonse Decourdemanche, Emile and Isaac Pereire, tax was understood from a very functionalist perspective. It was through tax that the market was structured, by restoring balance to material funds and by activating the movement of capital in such a way as to decrease interest rate. Moreover, the Saint-Simonians developed a socio-economic theory of borrowing: the development of public debt was a means to socialize credit and capital. The second tradition, that of the fraternal socialists represented by Louis Blanc,Pierre Leroux, Jean Reynaud, François Vidal and Constantin Pecqueur, refuted the Saint-Simonian theory of “unlimited public borrowing”. It proposed the reform of the economic and commercial institutions likely to provide the young Republic with the necessary resources to fund the “right to work”, without recourse to tax or to borrowing. The arguments developed were part of singular political economies which demonstrated, eachin their own manner, their opposition to liberal political economy: a capability political economy (Saint-Simonian), manifested in the technical discourse articulated in the financialdebates of the time; a republican political economy (fraternal), characterized by the philosophical discourse which attempted to reintegrate politics into the treatment of economic affairs. The reinvention of the tax system in order to reorganize society was an important objective for the 19 th century French socialists.

Vínculo fraterno en jóvenes que tienen un hermano menor diagnosticado con el Trastorno del Espectro Autista (TEA) / Fraternal bond in young people who have a younger brother diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Lercari Colareta, Fiamma, Vargas Pérez, Daniela 04 January 2021 (has links)
This qualitative, descriptive phenomenological study aims to analyze the fraternal bond between young people with younger siblings diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study was developed by applying the in-depth interview technique to eight young people between 19 and 24 years old. The information collected was analyzed through three categories proposed by Czernikowksi, Matus and Moscona (2003), a) Suppression or Rivalry, b) Union or Conjunction and c) Disjunction or Separation. According to the results, the interviewees manifested ambivalent feelings, that is, they reflect on the brother with the diagnosis, feelings related to anger, jealousy and rivalry; as well as love, care and understanding. Well, they identify the restructuring in the family dynamics, which begins to revolve around their siblings; so, they claim to feel displaced and distance themselves from them, assuming this exclusion as a defense. They also expressed frustration at not having an expected family dynamic; recognizing that their role demands greater responsibilities than that of other family systems; Therefore, they went through an adaptation process, where they perceived their family situation as complicated. / Tesis

Towards the cattle economy: understanding the different economic logic of stokvels at Esihlengeni in Vryheid, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa / Ekubuyeleni Kumnotho Wezinkomo: Ukuqondisisa Indlela Ehlukile Yonmotho Wezitokofela eSihlengeni esiseFilidi, KwaZulu-Natali, eNingizimu Afrika / Go ya go ekonomi ya dikgomo: go kwešiša lotšiki ya ekonomi ye e fapanego ya ditokofele kua Esihlengeni go la Vryheid, Kwazulu-Natal, Afrika Borwa / U livha kha ikonomi ya kholomo: u pfesesa ikonomi dzo thevhekano dza ikonomi dzo fhambanaho dza zwiṱokofela zwa Esihlengeni ngei Vryheid, Kwazulu-Natal, Afrika Tshipembe

Radebe, Nompumelelo Zodwa 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English with abstracts in English, isiZulu, Northern Sotho and Tshivenda / This study explores the phenomenon of stokvels − membership-based savings schemes providing for the social and financial wellbeing of their members as well as entertainment (Lukhele, 1990). The purpose of the study is to identify the existence of a different kind of economy that is not informed by the capitalist logic. The study aims to examine the values that underpin stokvels and to locate them within a particular socio-cultural and historical context. This is a qualitative research study and my research approach included fieldwork, participant observation, in-depth interviews and the procedure of genealogy. The study, employing these methods, has enabled me to draw a connection between the Khumalo clan - the generation of Mzilikazi Khumalo who was a friend to King Shaka and is argued to have played a pivotal role in building what is known as the Zulu nation today – and my uncles. In the six months I spent at Esihlengeni, a small village in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, I interviewed 27 people, attended two funerals, one family ritual and conducted two focus group discussions with stokvel women. I found that stokvels are not centred on an African epistemic framework as anticipated in the problem statement but are still within the capitalist logic of profit and thus do not draw from the community’s traditional values. While stokvels are informed by the dominant capitalist logic, the community of Esihlengeni still draws from their cosmological worldview that provides them with a different understanding of the economy that is centred on cattle – the means that allow them to perform rituals that guarantee protection and continuity of life - to make sense of their world. Their insistence on the importance of cattle in this community is their cry to be allowed to exist and be recognised as humans that can think for themselves. I conclude by arguing that to understand this community correctly, we need to take the ontological difference seriously that we cannot possibly have only one way of existing. The community of Esihlengeni thus provides us with the economic theory that is centred on life in its totality – that takes both the physical and metaphysical into consideration to ensure the continuity of life. As such, the community of Esihlengeni should be regarded as a gift to be appreciated. / Lolucwaningo luhlaziya isimo sezitokofela – uhlelo lokonga olunika abayingxenye yalo ukweseka kwezomphakathi, ezomnotho nezokuzijabulisa (Lukhele 1990). Ingqikimba yokwenza lolucwaningo ukubonisa ubukhona bomnnotho ohlukile, ongatshelwa wumnotho ogxile kwinzuzo, phecelezi ikhephithalizimu. Injongo yalolucwaningo ukuhlolisisa izimiso ezisekela amastokofela nokuwabeka endaweni ethize yezinhlalo zomphakathi-namasiko kanye nomlando. Ngiphetha ngokuthi ukuqondisisa lomphakathi kahle, kumele sithathe ukuhlukana kwezizwe okuyimvelo yempilo ngokuzimisela, ukuthi kungenzeke kube nendlela eyodwa yokuphila. Kindling the Fires of Patriotism: The Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Indiana, 1866-1949

Sacco, Nicholas W. January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Following the end of the American Civil War in 1865, thousands of Union veterans joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the largest Union veterans' fraternal organization in the United States. Upwards of 25,000 Hoosier veterans were members in the Department of Indiana by 1890, including President Benjamin Harrison and General Lew Wallace. This thesis argues that Indiana GAR members met in fraternity to share and construct memories of the Civil War that helped make sense of the past and the present. Indiana GAR members took it upon themselves after the war to act as gatekeepers of Civil War memory in the Hoosier state, publicly arguing that important values they acquired through armed conflict—obedience to authority, duty, selflessness, honor, and love of country—were losing relevance in an increasingly industrialized society that seemingly valued selfishness, materialism, and political radicalism. This thesis explores the creation of Civil War memories and GAR identity, the historical origins of Memorial Day in Indiana, and the Indiana GAR's struggle to incorporate ideals of "patriotic instruction" in public school history classrooms throughout the state.
