Maternal Separation in the Rat : The Short- and Long-term effects of Early-life Experience on Neuropeptides, Monoamines and Voluntary Ethanol Consumption

Oreland, Sadia January 2009 (has links)
Early-life experience has profound effects on the individual’s neurobiology and behaviour later in life. The rodent animal experimental model maternal separation (MS) was used to study this more in detail. The MS model involves short and prolonged postnatal separations simulating an emotionally safe and stressful environment, respectively. The aims of the thesis were to examine the impact of individual MS on ethanol consumption and on brain dopamine and serotonin systems in adult male rats. Furthermore, the influence of separation conditions on the short- and long-term consequences of MS on several neurotransmitter systems was examined. Rat pups were assigned to either litter-wise MS for 15 or 360 minutes (MS15l or MS360l) or individual MS for 15 or 360 minutes (MS15i or MS360i). Control rats were subjected to conventional animal facility rearing (AFR). Ethanol intake was assessed in a two-bottle free-choice paradigm. Neuropeptides were analyzed with radioimmunoassay, monoamines and metabolites with electrochemical detection and gene expression with qPCR. Using the MSi paradigm, minor effects on voluntary ethanol consumption were observed. However, the monoaminergic responses elicited by ethanol were dependent on the early-life environment. Furthermore, short- and long-term consequences of MS on serotonin, opioid, oxytocin and vasopressin systems were studied. Multiple neurobiological measurements in one and the same rat offered a unique possibility to examine the effects of duration (MS15 versus MS360) and condition (l versus i) of MS. Time-, region-, sex- and transmitter-specific effects were observed. More pronounced differences were seen in serotonin measures and oxytocin in young rats. In adults these differences in basal levels were normalized. Opioid peptides differed in stress-related brain areas in young rats and in limbic areas in adults. Rats subjected to the MS15l environment that relates to natural conditions generally exhibited a different neurobiological profile than other groups. AFR rats, i.e. conventional control rats, were more similar to the putative most stressful condition MS360. Taken together, the networks examined in the present thesis are important for the establishment of normal social behaviour and derangements in these systems may result in neurobiological changes leading to the susceptibility for psychopathological conditions later in life.

In this sense, we will seek to define the problem of freedom of the will as a problem concerning the legislation of act which lead us to ask what are the rules, causes and norms governing human act. What are the laws and causes of human action? Are the natural laws and causes, desires and inclinations, or are the laws and rational motives, practical principles? We are interested in defending the notion of free rational act presuppose, on the one hand, a practical reason that guides the action from prescription that command and impose normative authority and, on the other hand, the practical-deliberative ability of the agent to recognize and judging such prescriptions. All discussion is throughout by the concept of free choice (practical freedom). Therefore, we will investigate exhaustively the characteristics of this concept, the structure, spontaneity, relation with other faculties, and so on. Overall, the conception of free will that we will defend depends, at first, of spontaneity and self- determination capacity of free choice face the sensible inclinations. We get the concept of will (Wille) from an explanation of the reflective characteristics of free choice and faculty of desire, that is, the concept of will arises as necessary to the concept of free choice. By free will we must understanding the human ability to act through representation of laws and practical-rational principles, the ability of self-determination of the desire by means practical reason overcoming of inclinations by the possibility of acting on a pure rational motive. At the end we will see that freedom of the will defense provides us with a fruitful theory of action.

Smluvní omezení další výdělečné činnosti zaměstnance / Contractual restriction of performance of other gainful activity of an employee

Štěpánová, Lucie January 2016 (has links)
Contractual restriction of performance of other gainful activity of an employee This thesis has three main purposes. The first purpose of this thesis is to analyse the non-competition clause in the Labour Code, which is the only means of contractual restriction of performance of other gainful activity of an employee. I also focus on identification of eventual problems that might occur when applying this legislation. The second purpose of this thesis is to compare selected questions concerning the non-competition clause in Czech and German law. The third purpose of this thesis is to present suggestions de lege ferenda and to propose amendments to the Labour Code. The thesis is divided into five main chapters. The first chapter is followed by the second chapter, which is subdivided into four subchapters. The first subchapter deals with the restriction of other gainful activity of an employee identical with the scope of business of the employer for the duration of employment. This restriction arises directly from the Labour Code. The second subchapter focuses on the restriction of business activities of the employees employed in public administration. The third and the fourth subchapter contain a general description of non-competition clause in the Labour Code and prohibited non-competition clause in...

Primärvårdens målkonflikter : En fallstudie av sju vårdcentraler i Region Skåne

Brådner, Helén, Noretoft, Cecilia January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate goal conflicts in primary care in Region Skåne and what impact the patient's free choice has on these conflicts. A qualitative case study of seven health centers in Region Skåne was conducted. Four of the health centers were located in the countryside and the other three were located in two of Skåne's largest cities. Semi-structured interviews with the head of operations for each health center were conducted.Region Skåne manages the primary care operations by determining the budget and by deciding how the current compensation system should be designed. Today's replacement system is perceived as complicated to use, but easy to manipulate. The patient's free choice, with an unlimited number of re-listing options, affects the health centers' budget plans. For some operations, a constantly varied patient base means rapidly outdated budget bases. Free choice also affects patient safety through a lack of continuity. The horizontal and vertical management system is coherent and entails a constant balancing act for the heads of operations within primary care in Region Skåne.

Assessing virtual free-choice agricultural learning: A mixed methods approach

Kennedy, Richard John 09 August 2022 (has links)
Since the mid-19th century, agricultural museums and living history sites, first in Scandinavia and then in the United States and Canada, have provided historical, cultural, and, sometimes, scientific information about farming to visitors. Many of these visitors have been school children on field trips. Assessment of this learning, however, has been scant, particularly within the free-choice style inherent in these types of educational venues. At the same time, assessment of free-choice learning, often analyzed through the Contextual Model of Learning (Falk & Dierking 2000), has taken place at educational sites like zoos, natural history museums, and science centers. This study, conducted in January of 2022 at a middle school in northern Indiana applied a two-group, mixed methods approach that analyzed knowledge gain and student attitudes about free-choice learning in an agricultural history unit. Both groups learned through traditional classroom methods of lecture, visuals, and an activity, while the treatment group participated in a virtual field trip to an agricultural museum but with a virtual component because of COVID-19 restrictions. Results demonstrated that, while the comparison group and treatment group scores between pre-testing and post-testing improved significantly, there was no statistically meaningful difference between groups. In addition, there were no meaningful differences in attitudes regarding the unit between the groups. Correlations between test scores and the questionnaire of student attitudes revealed few differences, the most significant being a significant negative correlation between feedback and scores in the comparison group. Qualitative questionnaire prompts answered by both groups and select interviews with treatment group participants were used to help explain the quantitative results. These explanations focused on a lack of novelty involved with virtual field trips for younger, technologically astute students, and, consequently, less emotionally connected and less motivated learners.

Det fria skolvalets legitimitet : En filosofisk analys om autonomins egenvärde, paternalistiska interventioner och rättviseteoretiska principer / The legitimacy of the free choise of school : A philosophical study about the value of autonomy in the context of paternalistic interventions and principles of justice.

Galatius, Jonas January 2019 (has links)
The name of this essay is The legitimacy of the free choice of school – a philosophical studyabout the value of autonomy in the context of paternalistic interventions and principles ofjustice. The aim of this essay is to examine how the free choice of school can be legitimizedthrough perspectives regarding principles of justice. The results show that the free choice ofschool can be legitimized from several different standpoints such as the intrisic value ofautonomy, the negative concept of freedom and the rights based perspective of equality.Further, the free choice of school can also be legitimized from an epistemic viewpoint aswell as through theories about fair processes and compensatory efforts. My ambition withthis study is to broaden the discourse surrounding the topic. A discussion based on ideas andprinciples is a valuable complement to the more common debate about outcome regardingthe free choice of school.

Using Brownfields to Think Green: Investigating Factors that Influence Community Decision-Making and Participation

Stair, Charissa Ruth 01 January 2011 (has links)
Brownfield restoration and remediation is a growing concern across the United States. Brownfields are vacant or abandoned properties with real or perceived contamination. Successfully restoring these properties requires strong stakeholder collaboration, including the local community. The purpose of this study was to explore the complexities of creating a community garden on a residential brownfield site located in a low-income, high-minority neighborhood and to gain a better understanding of how a community based project develops and impacts individuals from the community. Specifically, the study investigated who chose to participate in the project, what motivated individuals to become involved and remain committed, and how individual's understanding of the project's risks and plans changed throughout his/her involvement. The case study followed 17 participants through the first year of the Emerson Street Garden, a brownfield restoration project in the King Neighborhood of northeast Portland, Oregon. Findings showed that individuals were attracted to different styles of outreach materials based on their own personality and preferences. The desire to improve the community was an important motivation for all the participants but personal motivation was not connected to knowledge retention. While the Emerson Working Group was successful at distributing knowledge to all its members, individual's flexibility to new ideas was critical for continued involvement in the working group. In conclusion, the study found that a "one-size-fits-all" method for engaging community members in urban restoration and renewal projects does not exist; however, there are best practices that can be applied to most situations. Implications for practice and further research are discussed.

Niondeklassarens dilemma : En undersökning om elevers beslutsprocess inför gymnasievalet ur ett vägledarperspektiv / Dilemma for pupils from the nine-year compulsory school.

Landare Ledin, Ann-Sofi, Erdin Persson, Marielle January 2009 (has links)
There are several choices available and the pupils face a difficult decision. This study is about the choice of upper secondary school and describes the Swedish school system during the 20th century and the theories of career guidance and social psychology that can be applied to pupils’ decision-making.</p><p>The aim is to examine factors affecting the pupils in their choices to provide increased knowledge and insight into the counselling profession. A quantitative method has been used in a study with pupils from the science programme in upper secondary school. In parallel, a literature study has contributed with data from previous research in this field. The results of the study show how pupils perceive the factors that may affect them.</p><p>The results indicate that pupils make their choices on the basis of set targets like choosing an education that provides a broad basis for further studies and are not particularly affected by their social surrounding. The study also shows that there are factors in the pupil’s social sphere affecting them which is consistent with previous research, such as parents with higher education or a social climate that now requires that young people stay in education longer than before.</p><p> </p>

Westberg, Erik January 2007 (has links)
<p>This essay compares the public debate in Sweden 1992 caused by the reforms introduced by the then government giving parents a free choice of schools for their children with the current debate in France about proposals for a similar law there. The study concentrates on the positions taken by the teachers trade unions, in Sweden Lärarförbundet and Lärarnas Riksförbund (LR) and in France SGEN-CFDT. To do so it is necessary also to study the arguments given for and against the proposals by the political parties.</p><p>Some of the differences between the debates can be attributed to different circumstances. The Swedish reform was related to the opening up of possibilities to run private schools, which previously had been rare in Sweden. The French debate has no such connections. The private schools, mostly Catholic, have a very stable share of the students and no side is openly arguing for a change of any sort. Other differences depend on the French adversity to liberalism, almost always conflated with neo-liberalism which makes market-oriented arguments much less common in French public debate.</p><p>Among the trade unions the big difference is between the two Swedish organisations, LR was overall positive to the proposals while Lärarförbundet opposed them. In France SGEN-CFDT takes a position strikingly similar to Lärarförbundets in Sweden 1992 seeing free choice as undermining the idea of a school system for all. In Sweden that idea is seen as a part of the welfare state, closely connected to the Social Democratic party. In France it is seen as a republican idea, connected to an idea of citizenship.</p><p>The trade unions of the teachers in both France and Sweden are also in similar positions as their role has become merely reactive. There seems to be little room left for them to formulate policy and push the educational systems in their prefered directions.</p>
