Applying lean principles to transform conventional oil and gas production operations in a Gulf State into cleaner energy

Alsayigh, Ali January 2015 (has links)
There is much interest in the protection of the ecosystem within the oil and gas industry. This is particularly significant in the countries of the Middle East where the oil and gas sectors contribute a large part, in some cases all of the country economies. A case study research analysis into the Lean and Green principles of one of the State of Kuwait organisations could offer the country huge potential and could benefit other Arabian Gulf countries. In the chosen country (Kuwait), Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has no other outlet for its business apart from oil and gas production. It also does not concern itself with other support business that could contribute to Kuwait's economy.

Cenários quantitativos de gases de efeito estufa e energia pela gestão de resíduos na Macrometrópole Paulista / Energy and greenhouse gases numeric scenarios from waste management in the Macrometropole Paulista

João Wagner Silva Alves 01 December 2017 (has links)
The Proposed National Contribution presented by the Brazilian Government at the 21st Conference of Parties in Paris 2015 defined the national commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) with other countries of the United Nations Framework Convention Climate Change (UNFCCC). To fulfill this commitment, policies have to be adopted. Quantitative GHG emission scenarios can anticipate estimates for future inventories of those gases. Scenarios can help the Government to comply with the Decree 7.390/10 and Decision 2 / CP.17 to prepare annual and bi-annual GHG emission estimates. Scenarios can also reduce the uncertainty of the national inventory and may assist in identifying low carbon alternatives. The projection of population growth, the changes on waste collection rate, the differences of collected waste composition of and the variation of operational quality of disposal sites allows to define a single future, in which the consequences of the available options for waste management in 2016 can be compared. Waste composition, lower calorific value and organic and fossil fraction in urban waste were estimated. Deadlines and targets considered in this study were inspired on National Solid Waste Act and São Paulo State policies on Climate Change. Waste treatment options, starting in 2016, raising to 30% in 2040 were simulated. The collection and combustion of landfill biogas, which until 2000 were not common in the country, are now a reality. The possibility of implementing this option in all the Macrometropole Paulista disposal sites is assumed. This study shows that, in the waste sector, recovery and the energetic use of methane, associated with recycling and treatment of organic matter from part of the collected solid waste can reduce emission over 45% in relation to the 2005 observed emission. This study also shows that incineration of plastics can increase emission over 80% as compared to that observed in 2005.

Consumo energético nos setores industriais brasileiros: uma avaliação de desempenho e estratégias para a redução da emissão de CO2 / Energy consumption in the industrial sectors in Brazil: an evaluation of performance and strategies to reduce CO2 emissions

Flávia de Castro Camioto 04 October 2013 (has links)
In a period of climate change and of an increasingly restriction of emissions, it is pivotal to focus on a development by countries towards an economy revolved on low carbon dioxide levels. The high consumption of fossil fuels results in damages on a global, regional and local level threatening long-term supply in our planet. This work has as its objective to analyze the performance of the main Brazilian industrial sectors considering their energy consumption and contributions to social and economic aspects of the country. In addition, will be measure the environmental benefits, in terms of CO2 emissions, resulting from fuel substitution in the industrial sectors of lower performance and discuss public policies aimed at stimulating the use of cleaner energy sources. So as to achieve this objective, an analysis and measurement assertion of the potential environmental contribution that a change of the energy matrix, of the sectors with lower performance as regards to its contribution to sustainable development of the country, may provide was performed. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used to determine the efficiency of the sectors. The results of this study indicated that the metallurgical and nonmetallic sectors are the ones that have the lowest performance industrial in terms of sustainable. For the measurement of CO2 emissions for each major fuel used in the sectors with lower performance, the Top-Down method proposed by the IPCC was used. This analysis indicated that, although charcoal is the second fuel in sectors that emit more CO2, it can contribute to the reduction of global warming since it comes from forest reforestation destined for the activity industrial. Finally, a brief discussion about public policies on this fuel was held.

Análise da Sustentabilidade Energética : um estudo do potencial de conservação da energia elétrica nos sistemas de iluminação e condicionamento de ar do IFS – Campus Lagarto / Energy Sustainability Analysis: a study of the electrical energy conservation potential in the lighting and air conditioning systems of the IFS - Lagarto Campus

Silva, Gilmar Silvestre da Cruz 17 February 2017 (has links)
The present study estimated the Energy Conservation Potential (PCE) of the lighting and air conditioning systems of the Federal Institute of Sergipe (IFS) – Campus Lagarto. Both systems were classified according to the Technical Regulation of Quality for the Energy Efficiency Level of Commercial Buildings, Services and Public Buildings (RTQ-C), Inmetro Ordinance n.º 372, of September 17, 2010. The analysis was done using the comparative method to check the installed power and how much could be saved if efficient air conditioning units and lamps were used instead of the current ineffective ones. With regard to the lighting system, it was verified that the institution has 66.576 kW of installed load. The efficiency of this system was analyzed by the method of the building activities included in the RTQ-C and the initial hypothesis that the system was inefficient was verified. There was a great amount of burned lamps and that many environments did not have switches to control the lighting circuit in the place where the activities are carried out, besides the lack of natural light and the nonautomation of the places with areas bigger than 240 m2. This made, after checking the requirements, the building receives the C classification. It was simulated the replacement of the fluorescent lamps by LED and found a significant energy conservation potential of 39.90% and it was found enough to completely illuminate the whole building spending only 1.01% more energy than is currently spent with the working lamps. Regarding the air conditioning system, the building has a total of 2.5665 million of BTU/h (752.166 kW or 213.875 TR), implying 271.048 kW of installed power connected to the electric grid. All airconditioned environments in the FIS - Campus Lagarto were evaluated and 91 units were found, distributed in three types: window, split floor -ceiling and split Hi-wall. Of this total, 73 equipment’s are of classification level D, being this also the general conjuncture of the system. When calculating the energy conservation potential, it reached 29.30%, and in some equipment, simple replacement can generate savings of 53.06%. Regarding the emissions from the acquisition of electric energy in the period from 2010 to 2015, the FIS - Campus Lagarto registered the consumption of 1.38 MWh of electricity, incurring 142.181 tCO2 of emissions. It was identified 106 trees planted in the institution, being the minimum quantitative recommended for the neutralization of these of 1655 trees. If FIS - Campus Lagarto wanted to use the carbon credits market to do so, it would have to pay the sum of R$ 2872.44. It is therefore recommended that the institution conduct a complete inventory of its GHG emissions and plant a forest or forest reserve outside the Campus to neutralize its emissions and use it for research and/or scientific studies. It is also suggested to the school that creates a permanent Environmental Education Project aimed at reducing waste in the consumption of electric energy and adoption of environmentally sustainable practices.

Cadres méthodologiques pour la conception innovante d'un Plan énergétique durable à l'échelle d'une organisation : application d'une planification énergétique pour une économie compétitive bas carbone au Sonnenhof / Methodological frameworks for the innovative design of a sustainable energy plan at a organization scale : energy planning for moving to a competitive low carbon economy in Sonnenhof

Bach, Sébastien 27 September 2017 (has links)
Companies and more generally organizations are confronted with climatic and economic issues, they have to respect a legal framework and orientations defined in larger scales (regional, national and international). An organization usually knows the goal or the objective to be achieved; however the way to do can require learning or even research. The goal of this thesis is to provide a methodology for the use of organizations to realize strategic management of their energy transition projects. From many different states of the art about energy planning and conception in particular, we show the methodological deficit which an organization has to face: if approaches and tools exist when a problem is clearly identified, how actually identify one or several problems from only a goal or intention formulation? The first part proposes an energy planning approach at an organizational scale to bring out in structured way problems which the organization may be confronted. Our approach is based on greenhouse gas emission assessments and energy/GHG management methods which are completed with conception approaches and some tools and methodologies. They facilitate the consolidation of required information and data to formulate and structure problems to solve. As a result of our approach some problems are formulated as contradictions and conflicts. The developed approach is purely qualitative and adapted to workgroup with experts. However some numerical data translate system behaviors which are sparsely mastered by project stakeholders. The second part proposes a combined method of simulation and data analysis to identify objective and cause contradictions which can or seem to prevent achieving the objectives. These contradictions are formulated in such a way to be handled with methods of resolution of inventive problems. The identification of objective contradictions is based on the transformation of experimental or simulation answers of the studied systems in binary qualitative data and on the identification of optimal Pareto of the transformed data. Cause contradictions concern conception factors or parameters which induce objective conflicts. We suggest identifying these contradictions with a binary discriminant analysis method based on supervised learning associated with ANOVA. On one hand, we show on a study case how integrate this initiative into the presented approaches in part 1 and on the other hand, how use it to obtain solution concepts in a multi-objective context (energy consumptions, GHG emissions or cost reduction etc.).

Temporal structure of individual mobility and its CO2 impact in France according to type of residential area (are citizens virtuous only on weekdays?)

Nguyen, Quang Nguyen 16 December 2014 (has links)
My thesis concern is about knowledge and in depth-understanding of the annual distribution of individual mobility in France (distinguishing daily, weekend and long distance trips) according to the residential locations (by category of urban areas) via the development of an annual CO2 emissions assessment, to address the issue of climate change. After a brief methodological description of the tool, using the dataset of the most recent French National Transport Survey (2007-2008), the paper presents some typical results, declining the distribution of CO2 emissions due to this mobility according to the zone of residence: beyond the initial descriptive analyses, a cluster analysis of mobility behavior results in four profiles of mobility according to the CO2-emissions budgets on these three time segments of mobility. It shows that each type of mobility behavior is not available (nor uniform) in only one type of space. A "cocooning effect" can be detected but it is probably not strong enough to confirm that the citizens of (large) city centers during the weekend necessarily ruin their rather virtuous behavior on week days through the use of less polluting modes. Case studies by gender, frequent travelers (pendulous or transcontinental), and some travel purposes (e.g. shopping, leisure) provide additional results. Finally, the analysis of occupancy rates of the car for local travel shows, that more passengers in a vehicle is an important factor for its energy efficiency (and therefore CO2) due to mobility.

A life cycle assessment on liquid biofuel use in the transport sector of Ethiopia

Dereje Kebede Abebe 06 1900 (has links)
Seed-oil based biodiesel production particularly biodiesel production from the nonedible oil seed bearing plant - Jatropha curcas L. - is a key strategic direction outlined in the biofuels strategy of the Government of Ethiopia. The main objective underlying the strategy include substitution of imported diesel oil used in the road transport sector while at the same time contributing to the local and global greenhouse gasses (GHG) reduction efforts. In this study the environmental benefits and costs of production and use of Jatropha biodiesel in the road transport sector of Ethiopia is assessed using a life cycle analysis (LCA) methodology. The analysis focused on determining the potential environmental impacts and net non-renewable energy saving potential of biodiesel from Jatropha oil-seeds using the following metrics: (i) Net Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction, and (ii) Net Energy Balance (NEB) relative to diesel oil. The study shows that the net GHG emissions reduction potential of Jatropha Methyl Ester (JME) is highly influenced by the magnitude of initial carbon loss occurring in the process of conversion of different land uses to Jatropha plantation, and less so on other unit processes of JME production system analysed. The NEB of JME relative to use of diesel oil per functional unit of one GJ is less sensitive to impacts of land use change and is generally positive. Where no land use change impacts is considered, or where Jatropha is grown on lands with low carbon stock such as grasslands, substitution of diesel oil with JME in Ethiopia can provide GHG emission reduction of about 43%, and for each MJ of JME produced the nonrenewable energy requirement will be 0,38 MJ. Production of JME by converting lands with high above ground, below ground and/or soil carbon stocks such as shrub lands or well stocked forest lands will result in net loss of carbon and require ecological carbon payback time of 50 to hundreds of years. The impact of introducing and use of JME-diesel oil blends by Anbassa City Bus Services Enterprise (ACBSE) bus fleets shows that, displacement of diesel oil with JME that have positive GHG reduction potential, will also contribute to the reduction of air pollutants and improvement of ambient air quality in Addis Ababa. Two key recommendations of this research work are that to ensure environmental sustainability of biodiesel production from Jatropha seeds (i) land availability and land suitability assessment for estimating the potential available land for Jatropha (and other oil-seed bearing plants) shall be conducted, and (ii) minimum requirements on GHG reduction and NEB requirements on biodiesel shall be established. / Environmental Sciences / M. Assessment of Raw Materials in Stainless Steelmaking-Their Energy Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emission

Wenjing, Wei January 2021 (has links)
In stainless steelmaking, around 68% of the total greenhouse gas emissions come from the processing of raw materials. Thus, it is important for steelmakers to make efforts together with their raw material suppliers to implement low-carbon initiatives. To facilitate such initiatives, assessment of raw materials will provide guidance. In this work, the assessment of materials consists of two parts: i) different production scenarios are studied by using a static process model coupled with life cycle assessment approach to investigate the reduction potential of environmental impacts for Mo and Ni alloys; ii) assessment of the effect of trace element content (phosphorus) in stainless steel scrap on steel’s manufacturing cost, resource consumption and environmental impact using an online static process model. The results show that the overall GHG emission of FeMo production varies between 3.16-14.79 t CO2-eq/t FeMo (i.e. 5.3-24.7 tCO2-eq/t Mo). The main variance comes from the mining and beneficiation stages and depends mainly on the ore’s beneficiation degree. However, whether molybdenum is extracted as a co-product from copper mine or not can have an even greater effect on the total GHG emission of molybdenum due to the allocation of the impacts.  In the case of nickel alloys, the GHG emissions for producing nickel metal, nickel oxide, ferronickel and nickel pig iron are 14, 30, 6 and 7 tCO2-eq/t alloy (i.e. 14, 40, 18, and 69 tCO2-eq/t Ni), respectively. Extracting sulfide ore through flash smelting process has been shown to have the least energy requirement and greenhouse gas emissions. In comparison to sulfide ore processing, oxide ore processed in an electric furnace is much more energy intensive and less environmental friendly primarily due to high content of gangue. However, by using a sustainable electricity source such as hydro-powered electricity, or applying a thermal heat recovery, it is possible to reduce the impact from electric furnace smelting of laterite. Furthermore, the use of stainless steel scraps with low phosphorous contents reduces slag amount, alloy consumption, production cost and carbon footprint. An estimation equation between phosphorous content and scrap’s value-in-use is obtained in the study to support the development of purchasing strategy. To conclude, the application of static process model based on mass and energy balance provides the possibility to assess raw materials’ environmental impact (energy consumption and GHG emissions) and to identify potentials to realize sustainable stainless steelmaking.

Interpretations of concepts and implementation of negative emissions technologies (NETs) in long-term climate targets : A cross country comparison / Begreppstolkning och implementering av negativa utsläpp i långsiktiga klimatmål : En jämförelse mellan länder

Countries' long-term climate targets are described by different concepts who, over time, have become increasingly dependent on negative emissions technologies (NETs) in order for the targets to be reached. This thesis is a cross country comparison, examining similarities and differences in the concepts used by seven countries to express their long-term climate targets, focusing on their plans for implementing NETs. The empirical material was collected from interviews with experts from each country. Concepts in long-term climate targets can have various interpretations and there are uncertainties about what emissions that are covered within the different concepts. NETs are crucial for achieving any type of net-zero target however they are in nascent stages, except for forest management, and there are several factors affecting the possibilities to implement NETs. It is important not to focus too much on NETs to comply with the long-term climate targets, NETs should function as a complement to emissions reduction and target the unavoidable emissions. We recommend that countries clarify what emissions are included within their concept, set out specific targets for NETs and lastly put a great effort into clarifying policy instruments related to NETs.
