Previous issue date: 2011-10-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The art that in Nietzsche s philosophy goes through all his lifetime and beyond that stretches for all posterity, is in this paper approached as being, according to philosophical thinking, the highest of the existential forms. In a consequent way, this leads to the understanding and acknowledgement that art is, in all the forms that it can be expressed by its muses - and especially for Nietzsche regarding tragic art in ancient Greece -, much more than what it seems to be, that is, inversely, the very existence manifests itself, necessarily, through art, therefore it is impossible to think of each one in an unconnected manner. More than a simple connection,existence, that is, life and art in a Nietzschean sense, in other words, creation, appear as all the crystalized forms of that that has no absolute shape or as Nietzsche described them according to his interpretation of the myths of Dionysus and Apollo. The first as being the representation of the misshapen and the hollow, that is, of the chaos and the abyssal darkness; the latter, on the other hand, as being the one that represents the rising of the being that, from the abyssal darkness, appears on the surface of existence usually and through the perception of the beautiful forms, but also through the opposing perception of the ugliness that, however, even the latter when expressed aesthetically through artistic inebriation both Dionysian and Apollonian, only occur due to its subordination to the natural artistic creation of both forms, beautiful and ugly, that is, through a soothing pathos, in other words, resisting against the unavoidable Nietzschean will to be in any way that it becomes, and all that, beyond good and evil. / A arte que na filosofia de Nietzsche ocupa todo o tempo de sua vida e para além desta estendese por toda posteridade é aqui neste escrito abordada como sendo, segundo o pensamento do filósofo, a mais elevada das formas existenciais. Uma constatação que submete de modo
consequente ao entendimento e à compreensão de ser ela, a arte, sob todas as formas que suas musas a expressam - especialmente para Nietzsche no que refere à arte trágica na Grécia antiga-, muito mais do que parece, quer dizer, inversamente, que a própria existência se manifesta de
modo necessário através da arte, portanto, que é impossível pensar uma e outra de uma forma desconexa. Mais do que uma simples conexão a existência, isto é, vida e arte no sentido nietzschiano, ou seja, enquanto criação, é uma e mesma coisa e que assim sendo, aparecem sob todas as formas cristalizadas daquilo que no fundo, não possui forma definitiva alguma ou como Nietzsche as descreveu conforme sua visão e interpretação dos mitos de Dionísio e Apolo. O primeiro mito como sendo o representante do disforme e do sem fundo, isto é, do caos ou o nada abissal; o segundo como sendo aquele que por sua vez, representa o apaziguamento da irrupção criadora, artística do ente desde o nada abissal aparecendo na superfície do existir normalmente e através do sentimento das formas belas, mas também pelo
sentimento contrário do feio que, todavia, mesmo este último quando expresso esteticamente via embriaguez tanto dionisíaca quanto apolínea, só ocorre devido sua subordinação à criação artística natural das formas tanto belas quanto feias, isto é, por um pathos que possa apaziguar, ou seja, resistindo à inelutável vontade nietzschiana de ser de qualquer modo que venha a ser, e isto tudo, para além de bem e mal.

Érigée, à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, en objet de prédilection de la nouvelle science de l'Antiquité (Altertumswissenschaft), la Grèce ancienne devint aussi, dans l'Allemagne savante et littéraire d'alors, objet d'un mythe tout à fait singulier, le « mythe grec » allemand.Les Allemands – telle est l'idée qui préside à la formation du Griechenmythos – sont les Grecs de l'époque moderne, ils sont reliés à eux par une « affinité élective », une parenté spirituelle idéale. Ce discours, qui perdure jusqu'au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, établit un dialogue, sans cesse renouvelé, entre le passé hellénique que l'on ambitionne de reconstituer et le présent de l'Allemagne, cette nouvelle Hellade que l'on aspire à édifier. Il revêt, dans le même temps, une place et une signification essentielles dans l'imaginaire et les pratiques discursives de la science de l'Antiquité. Laboratoire où se forme et se réinvente, durant toute la période concernée, la croyance en l'affinité gréco-allemande, l'Altertumswissenschaft fait de celle-ci le miroir de son originalité et le support de ses ambitions.Menée dans la perspective d'une histoire de la réception de l'Antiquité à l'époque moderne, la présente étude vise à retracer l'histoire des relations entre le Griechenmythos et l'Altertumswissenschaft, de Wilhelm von Humboldt à Werner Jaeger, dans une démarche attentive à l'entrelacement de la production des savoirs sur le passé grec et la fabrique du mythe. / Set up as a chosen field of study by the newly founded “science of Antiquity” (Altertumswissenschaft), Ancient Greece also became, in late 19th century Germany, the object of a quite peculiar myth, the German “Greek myth”.Germans – that is the basic assumption of the Griechenmythos – are the modern Greeks, they are related to them by an “elective affinity”, by an ideal spiritual relationship. This discourse, which endures until the end of the Second World War, establishes an ever-renewed dialogue between the Hellenic past, which one aims at reconstructing, and the present of Germany, this new Hellas ever to be built. It takes on, at the same time, a key role in the imaginative world and the discursive practices of Altertumswissenschaft. The latter, during this period, is the laboratory where the hellenists shape and reinvent the Greek-German belief, mirror of the originality of their project and medium of their ambitions.Undertaken from the perspective of reception studies, the present inquiry goes back over the relations between the Griechenmythos and Altertumswissenschaft, from Wilhelm von Humboldt to Werner Jaeger, paying attention to the interlacing of the production of knowledge on Ancient Greece and myth-making.

Navigating Female Power : (De-) Constructing the Space of the Immortal Threat in Homer’s OdysseyPartanen, Paulina January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to locate spatial manifestations of power, and acts of agency, by conducting a subversive reading of the female immortal threats in Homer’s Odyssey. With an aim to question preconceived notions on sexuality, gender and power, I draw on the theoretical perspectives of gender theorists J. Butler and J. Halberstam in my reading of non-normative female displays of power. The material in question is the adventures in the Odyssey that present female immortals, functioning as antagonists in the epos’ narrative structure. Space and power make the foundation in the deconstruction of these adventures. I approach the subject using analytical tools from the spatial methodology of K. Knott. Starting with ‘location’ I apply analytical categories such as ‘physical space’, ‘social space’, ‘properties of space’ and ‘spatial aspects’ in order to critically analyze spatial manifestations of power in each adventure. By placing the female immortal in the subject position, this work shows how she utilizes her space in order to dominate the mortal man she encounters. This is conducted through non-normative acts such as isolation and restriction. The study highlights the problem of putting ‘sex’ as the only, or dominant, focus in the reading of these adventures. The female immortals that Odysseus encounters, can by spatial analysis be shown to act autonomously towards mortal intruders that enter their territory. They present themselves as having the right to take a mortal man for a husband, as well as kill him or keep him as a prisoner. This suggests that their status as immortal exceeds Odysseus’ male gender, whilst still being restricted by the gender hierarchy of her immortal society. The spatial analysis show that the female immortal possesses the agency of the mortal female as well as of the mortal male within in their oikos. The female immortal displays power by sustaining her space, as well as by regulating the movements of the mortal man, in and out of, and sometimes beyond, her space.

Les Antigones espagnoles : modalités esthétiques et idéologiques des reprises de la figure mythique, de la Guerre Civile à la Transition / Rewriting Antigone : ideology and aesthetics in the Spanish versions of the tragedy, between the Civil War and the transition to democracyBlin, Fanny 22 September 2017 (has links)
En réponse au traumatisme de la division nationale suscitée par la guerre civile et cristallisée pendant le franquisme, la figure d’Antigone resurgit avec force dans la dramaturgie espagnole. Le parcours de résistance de cette héroïne grecque devient, sous la plume des auteurs espagnols du XXème siècle, l’emblème de la « juste mémoire » (Ricœur, 2000). Partant de l’hypothèse que le corpus des Antigones espagnoles constitue un ensemble relevant d’une dynamique commune de relecture de l’histoire, cette thèse recherche, à travers un travail comparatif des structures et des symboliques, la cohérence des versions catalanes, galiciennes et castillanes, de l’exil comme de l’intérieur, pour la période comprise entre 1936 et 1989. Dix-huit pièces sont ainsi mises en perspective pour démontrer la conquête de discours mémoriels et compensatoires à partir des sources hypotextuelles que constituent la tragédie de Sophocle, mais aussi les autres versions théâtrales du mythe. La première partie examine les procédés de réécriture du mythe, de l’histoire et de la tragédie, pour qualifier les pièces et déterminer un éventuel noyau mythique ou un schéma référentiel récurrent. La notion de « (re)configurations contemporaines » au prisme du contexte politique émerge alors pour désigner les objets de ce travail. La deuxième partie analyse les convergences esthétiques et les motifs récurrents dans les textes, car les Antigones espagnoles contemporaines placent au centre de la scène la métaphore de la marge pour figurer l’exclusion politique, ou encore celle du chemin pour représenter les destins brisés et l’exil. Fondamentalement, ces œuvres forgent un tombeau littéraire pour les défunts oubliés, mais aussi un monument en l’honneur des invisibles. La dimension esthétique de cette place théâtrale compensatrice ouvre une réflexion sur son sens cathartique dans une société en recomposition pendant la Transition. En effet, le troisième volet de cette thèse est centré sur la théâtralisation de l’histoire : il s’agit d’étudier les dispositifs de déconstruction des récits nationaux à travers les différents réagencements du mythe des Labdacides. Cette clé de lecture révèle les stratégies de démythification-remythification qui président aux nouvelles charges sémantiques des épisodes mythiques, dépeignant un autoportrait déformant de la communauté espagnole en crise. À l’horizon de ces pratiques de réécriture, se lit la conception d’une époque historique comme une épopée, que la parole cérémonielle et le dispositif scénique peuvent contribuer à purger, par une distance qui englobe un large prisme, de la sacralité au grotesque. / Echoing the traumatic conflict within the nation caused by the Civil War and crystallized during Franco’s era, Antigone’s reappearance was extremely intense in Spanish dramatic creation. In contemporary rewritings, the resistance of this tragic character from Greek mythology turned out to be the emblem of a “fairer memory” (Ricoeur, 2000). This work asserts that the Spanish Antigones converge and share a common signification when it comes to rewriting History; and resorts to a comparative study of structures and symbols to shed light on the continuity between the Castilian, Catalan and Galician versions, between those written in exile or not, from 1936 to 1989. In order to establish the common dynamic, eighteen plays are compared, whose key idea is to create a memorial and a redeeming discourse based on the Greek sources but also inspired by other versions of the tragedy. Therefore, the first part examines the strategies implemented to rearrange the mythical pattern, the historical context and the tragic genre. This leads to the conclusion that there is no permanent mythical core nor a fully recurrent referential scheme. As such, the notion of “contemporary (re)configurations” through the prism of politics seems relevant to describe the rewritings. The second part analyses the aesthetic convergences and the recurring themes and metaphors throughout the texts and concludes that in the contemporary Spanish Antigones, the image of the margins embodying exclusion takes on centre stage while the image of the path is resorted to in order to evoke broken destinies and exile. Basically, these plays create a literary tomb for the forgotten deceased but also a monument in honour of the invisible –alive– ones. The aesthetic dimension of this compensatory play requires a reflection upon its cathartic sense in a transforming society during the Transition to democracy. Indeed, the third part of this work focuses on the dramatization of History, making it crucial to study the scenic devices that dismantle the official stories and political myths. This reveals the strategies of “demystification” followed by new mythifications that portray a distorting image of the Spanish community in crisis. Ultimately, these practices of rewriting show that the playwrights conceived their time as an epic and mythical phase which could be purged by theatrical ceremonial thanks to a distancing effect that covers a large prism, from sacred to grotesque.

My studio and related research are closely aligned in developing my understanding of interconnection, through my studio process of making and continuing experiences of looking at and interpreting others artists’ work.
