Education and Curricular Perspectives in the Qur'an

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: In this dissertation I attempt to find elements of education and curricular perspective in the Qur'an. I argue that there is little research in the field of curriculum instruction that discusses the Qur'an's educational aspects and, as a result, much ignorance of the Qur'an's material that deals with education and curricular perspective in the Qur'an. Researchers may find many materials that deal with reading, memorizing, and reciting the Qur'an, along with references that deal with science and math in the Qur'an. Therefore, this dissertation answers the question: What curriculum exists within the Quran? This dissertation is divided into five chapters exploring various aspects of the curriculum. The word "curriculum" is used in one chapter to mean developing the person as a whole in all aspects of life whether spiritual, social, or mental while in the other chapter curriculum is used to refer to methods of instruction. I concluded that curriculum in the Qur'an uses different methods of instructions to develop the individual as a whole in all aspects of life while granting freedom of choice. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction 2013

Under tre framework of the water scarcity that is imposed as a global threat, it is urgent that we rethink man's relationship with water resources and the reconstruction of approaches management. Given that subsidies for the management of large river basins are based on the dynamics of small basins and their interrelations, this thesis aims to pursue a holistic view for the Espírito Santo Stream Basin (ESSB), located in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil, identifying their biotic and abiotic characteristics, researching up in more detail the ecological flow. Due to the difficulties of deepening ecohydrological research across ESSB, we determined two river stretches to be studied, one bedside and the other near the mouth. In these two stretches, we sought to know its topobathymetry, sediment, hydrodynamic characteristics, water quality, fish populations and the relationship with the ecological flow. The results indicated that the two stretches studied have biotic and abiotic characteristics of moderately polluted environments. However, the particularities of the marginal areas of the two stretches imply very different flood characteristics. The first stretch has some marginal depressions, forming small ponds, with such an environment widely recognized for its importance in the maintenance and integrity of aquatic biodiversity. The two sites studied, though situate themselves in very different positions in ESSB, do not differ significantly with respect to the grain size of the sediment, water quality parameters, abundance, richness, diversity and composition of fish populations. These characteristics allowed the construction of univariate habitat suitability curves of fish populations investigated for the river basin as a whole. The habitat methodology associated to a river natural flow recognition tool identified the water surplus in the two stretches studied, signaling greater caution with respect to granting right of water use in bedside stretches since it did not identify up water surplus; in the driest months of the year. In contrast, natural streams already impose stressful condition to the analyzed species. On the other side, the mouth stretch has a water surplus flow superior than Minas Gerais State flow reference for granting in the wettest months and is still able to support it in the driest months. It should be noted, that the remaining minimum flows determined by the Brazilian legislation appears to be incompatible with the needs for ecosystem maintenance.

Dealing with foreign language anxiety A study of how English teachers in Sweden help students overcome anxiety in oral presentations in secondary school

Bergquist, Simon January 2020 (has links)
In this study, I investigate how foreign language anxiety affects students’ performance during oral presentations. The study also explores how secondary school teachers in Sweden work with anxious students before, during and after an oral presentation and what approaches and exercises they find effective to use when doing so. Foreign language anxiety is a relatively new subject within language education and impacts language learning in various, mostly negative, ways. The data is collected from interviews with secondary school teachers in Sweden. The result show how these teachers identify FLA and what effects they believe it has on their students. The result also gives insight into how the teachers approach all three stages of an oral presentation to reduce symptoms that lead to increased anxiety. The study concludes by comparing the teachers’ choices to theories within language teaching to establish a pattern of what strategies are effective when dealing with FLA. In this study, I highlight the benefits of using oral presentations based on research and why every student should be given help to overcome their anxiety, so that they are prepared to use their English in high-pressure situations, such as during an oral presentation.

A model to enhance the empowerment of professional nurses to promote the recovery of people who have been diagnosed with depression

Pearce, Shelltunyan January 2010 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The purpose of this research study is to develop and describe a model to enhance the empowerment professional nurses to promote the recovery of people who have been diagnosed with depression. Depression is a prevalent psychiatric disorder that despite its increase worldwide, often goes undetected or inadequately treated. The biomedical model's reductionist and dualistic approach proves to be inadequate for nursing practice to address depression and calls for the examination of a multifaceted holistic approach. A multifaceted holistic approach views disease as having multiple causes that are amenable to multiple therapeutic interventions. Despite research evidence about the effectiveness of such an approach, an in-dept literature search did not reveal the availability of such a model to enhance the empowerment of professional nurses to promote the recovery of people who have been diagnosed with depression. The research question that emerged was: • How can professional nurses in the Western Cape be empowered to promote the recovery of people who have been diagnosed with depression? The assumption is that this question was necessary to address. To realise the purpose of this research study, the following objectives were formulated: • To explore and describe the self reported attributes needed by professional nurses to promote the recovery of people who have been diagnosed with depression. • To explore and describe how these self reported attributes can be facilitated in the work environment. • To propose a model to enhance the empowerment of professional nurses to promote the recovery of people who have been diagnosed with depression. • To develop guidelines for the operationalisation of the model. The theoretical framework for this research study was adopted from the Critical Social Theory. The research design and method used was qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual in nature. The research was done in two phases. In phase one the researcher did semi- structured interviews with a purposive and convenient sample of fourteen (14) professional nurses who were working in the Cape Town Metropolitan area and the West Coast.

Nationalism in Charles de Gaulle's Speeches During World War II

Amado, Mayavel 19 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In a world where conflicts and supranational entities have emerged, nationalism has become an important topic for scholars in different fields. While much debate exists on what this term actually means and encompass, little attention has been paid to the rhetoric of nationalist leaders. Through scholarly and popular literature nationalism has often been confused with patriotism and populism. This work intends to look at what nationalism is, based on patterns drawn from observations in the rhetoric of nationalist leaders (sometimes opposing them to populist rhetoric) and at the same time it intends to expose Charles de Gaulle's nationalism in his speeches during the years of World War II.

Hermansson, Carolin, Lindberg, Peter January 2010 (has links)
Background: To be cared for at home at the end of life is becoming more common. The last 10-15 years, the need for advanced care in the home has increased and the possibility to treat patients with complex medical conditions has become more possible. This has led to higher medical demands and to higher demands concerning specific nursing activities. Aim/Objective: The purpose of this study was to illuminate the ASIH-nurses' experience of treating patients at home at the end of life. Design: The study has a qualitative and descriptive approach. Two nurses from one ASIH unit in Stockholm were interviewed. A content analysis was then used to analyze the material. Result: Thirteen subcategories could be distinguished those formed five categories. Knowledge and experience due to good care, Significant others and their part in the caringprocess, Communication and understanding between patient and nurse, To adapt to customs and Personal cost of caring. Findings: The nurse within the advanced homecare facility bears a great responsibility when it comes to symptom relief. It may be relief of pain as well as anxiety. The importance of having a holistic approach that includes both patient and relatives were described as important. A good interaction between nurses, patients and relatives is a prerequisite for good care.

Coral Reef Habitats and Fish Connectivity : Implications for coastal management and fishery

Jörgensen, Tove Lund January 2016 (has links)
Coral reefs have one of the highest levels of biodiversity of all ecosystems in the world and are important for both human livelihood and food security throughout many tropical countries. However, due to increased anthropogenic pressure on marine ecosystems, especially during the last couple of decades, coral reefs have become critically over-fished, and many reefs are now in a degraded state and are facing additional future threats due to further over-exploitation, chemical pollution, sedimentation, and effects of climate change. The main aim of this PhD thesis was to understand effects of anthropogenic disturbances on tropical coastal ecosystems and fish connectivity for coastal management purposes. Therefore, linkages between anthropogenic disturbance and corals were investigated (Paper I), as well as interactions between coral reef habitat and associated fish assemblage (Paper II). Furthermore, connectivity between coral reefs and other tropical coastal ecosystems was explored (Paper III), as well as fish migration to reproduction sites (Paper IV), and evaluations of spatial ecology methods (Paper V). The result showed that coral reefs that are already exposed to disturbances, such as freshwater and nutrient run-offs, may be more sensitive to climate change, in terms of increased sea surface temperatures (Paper I). In addition, there were also clear linkages between coral reef quality, in terms of coral coverage, and fish assemblages, which displayed high spatial variability and suggesting patchy recovery after the 1997/1998 bleaching and subsequent coral mass mortality event (Paper II). This highlights the importance of understanding effects of disturbances on corals, especially in terms of synergistic effects between increased water temperatures and other coastal stressors such as decreased salinity and increased nutrients; and the indirect effects of habitat degradation on the fish community. Linkages between fish and different coastal habitats were further explored. The results showed that coral reefs were strongly connected with mangrove and seagrass beds, through ontogenetic migration of fish (Paper III). Migrations to spawning sites of groupers were related to lunar activities when thousands of fish gather for reproduction purposes during new moon, which increases the risk of over-exploitation (Paper IV). The results emphasises the importance of protecting key areas such as nursing grounds and reproduction sites. Furthermore, acoustic telemetry has become an increasingly common method in studies of fish movement, and the results showed that efficiency of acoustic arrays may increase depending on deployment strategies and habitat characteristics (Paper V). In conclusion, the results from this PhD thesis emphasises the importance of protecting coral reef habitats, as well as identifying related susceptible tropical coastal areas, such as nursing grounds and reproduction sites. Indeed, a better scientific understanding of coral reef ecology and indirect and direct effects on fish assemblages are needed for efficient and accurate coastal management decisions. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 5: Manuscript.</p>

Seeing the Forest but Missing the Trees: The Role of Judgments in Performance Management

Meriac, John P., Gorman, Charles Allen, Macan, Therese 01 March 2015 (has links)
Various solutions have been proposed to “fix” performance management (PM) over the last several decades. Pulakos, Mueller Hanson, Arad, and Moye (2015) have presented a holistic approach to improving PM in organizations. Although this approach addresses several key elements related to the social context of PM, namely the buy-in of organizational stakeholders, timely and regular feedback, and future-directed feedback, we believe that several robust findings from the PM research literature could further improve this process. Are Pulakos et al. looking at the forest but missing the trees? In the following commentary, we offer several reasons that performance judgments and perhaps even informal ratings are still operating and occurring in the proposed holistic system. Therefore, advancements in other areas of PM research may offer additional ways to fix PM.
