Body, Mind, Spirit: In Pursuit of an Integral Philosophy of Music Teaching and Learning

Mell, Margaret Ruth January 2010 (has links)
This dissertation investigates extant literature on the contributions of spirituality within music education from perspectives of philosophical writers in the field. It introduces Integral Theory, which features a five element heuristic: a) four quadrants of human experience, specifically, subjective, objective, individual, and collective perspectives; b) levels (or stages) of human development; c) lines of human development; d) states of consciousness; and e) types or styles of being and acting in the world. Finally, this dissertation applies Integral Theory's multi-perspective approach to the dynamic elements that engage body, mind, and spirit as teacher and learner perform, listen to, compose, and improvise music. I use Integral Theory's four quadrants of human experience to summarize, categorize, analyze, and map aspects of presenters' papers and the final round table discussion at the Spirituality Symposium, Spirituality: More than just a concept?, during the International Society of Music Education Conference (ISME), July, 2008, in Bologna, Italy. I use Integral Theory's levels of human development to map Edward Sarath's Levels of Creative Awareness, as he applies it to trans-stylistic jazz improvisation pedagogy. Sarath's melding of jazz music practices, and music theory and analysis with personal and collective non-music influences, transpersonal elements, and meditation mirrors Integral Theory's second element. Results from this philosophical inquiry show that discussions and pedagogy focusing on spirituality in music education include (a) teacher and student levels of proficiency and excellence in music, (b) personal and collective transformation, (c) diverse descriptions and interpretations of transcendence as they pertain to music's effect on persons, (d) understanding self and other especially meaning, value, belief, and moral systems, (e) receiving and dealing with emotions and feelings in professional settings, (f) brain, biological, and physical aspects, (g) personal and collective imagination, creativity, mystery, wonder, intention, attention, awareness, mindfulness, playfulness, authenticity, flow, (h) identified stake-holding cultural collectives, (i) environmental, institutional, educational, religious, and ideological factors, and (j) curriculum and experiential practices and guidelines. A close reading of flow pedagogy in early childhood music teaching shows some similar methodologies. / Music Education

Sattva: The Harmony of Balanced Living -  Architecture for Holistic Wellness

Narvekar, Sanika Mahesh 29 May 2024 (has links)
The thesis attempts to make an integrative and healing therapy center, employing a salutogenic approach to health and wellness. Salutogenesis is an approach that focuses on promoting a healthy lifestyle and prevention of disease through the creation of supportive environments. The project is based on the proposition that architectural and environmental elements can influence mental and physical well-being. The research explores how elements like light, water, structure and material can be employed to promote the energy flow in space, thus enhancing the healing quality of the environment. It dives into the concept of energy states within spaces and humans influenced by natural and architectural elements. The need for such a therapeutic center is derived from the increasing emphasis of the impact of healthy living and focus on mental health and as growing interest in preventive health measures. The thesis aims to study the role of architecture, and its influence on the harmony and holistic well being. It also dwells on the design choices like lighting, material selection, use of water features and structure can lead to creation of healing and therapeutic environments. It also emphasizes on open areas which could help in self reflection and relaxation. / Master of Architecture / The thesis attempts to make an integrative and healing therapy center, employing a salutogenic approach to health and wellness. The Haven.

Rashid, M. Ali, Wardle, E. January 2005 (has links)
No / The programmes follow the experiences of people living in or visiting the community. They range from a school leaver who feels she is learning more at Findhorn than she would at university to an Indian guru who offers himself as the community's new leader and wants to build a temple in the garden. A poignant backdrop to the series is the growing frailty of one of Findhorn¿s founders, 87-year-old Eileen Caddy, and the preparations, both practical and psychological, that community members are making for her death.

Contributions of Individual Face Features to Face Discrimination

Logan, Andrew J., Gordon, G.E., Loffler, G. 06 May 2017 (has links)
Yes / Faces are highly complex stimuli that contain a host of information. Such complexity poses the following questions: (a) do observers exhibit preferences for specific information? (b) how does sensitivity to individual face parts compare? These questions were addressed by quantifying sensitivity to different face features. Discrimination thresholds were determined for synthetic faces under the following conditions: (i) ‘full face’: all face features visible; (ii) ‘isolated feature’: single feature presented in isolation; (iii) ‘embedded feature’: all features visible, but only one feature modified. Mean threshold elevations for isolated features, relative to full-faces, were 0.84x, 1.08, 2.12, 3.34, 4.07 and 4.47 for head-shape, hairline, nose, mouth, eyes and eyebrows respectively. Hence, when two full faces can be discriminated at threshold, the difference between the eyes is about four times less than what is required when discriminating between isolated eyes. In all cases, sensitivity was higher when features were presented in isolation than when they were embedded within a face context (threshold elevations of 0.94x, 1.74, 2.67, 2.90, 5.94 and 9.94). This reveals a specific pattern of sensitivity to face information. Observers are between two and four times more sensitive to external than internal features. The pattern for internal features (higher sensitivity for the nose, compared to mouth, eyes and eyebrows) is consistent with lower sensitivity for those parts affected by facial dynamics (e.g. facial expressions). That isolated features are easier to discriminate than embedded features supports a holistic face processing mechanism which impedes extraction of information about individual features from full faces.

Audiologisk rehabilitering : En litteratur- och enkätstudie i Danmark, Norge, Sverige och på Island

Luckey, Marianne, Gunnarsdóttir, Kristbjörg January 2011 (has links)
Audiological rehabilitation is a complicated process entailing different aspects from medical, technical and behaviour science forming a holistic treatment. Historically more emphasis has been placed on the technical and medical facets of the treatment compared to the psychosocial. Purpose: The study´s purpose was to inspect similarities and differences regarding audiological rehabilitation by examining the framework, ideology and practice in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland. Method: To be able to achieve the purpose and to get a holistic insight the study was divided into two parts, namely litterature study and questionnaires. The litterature study reviewed the countries framework and ideology. The questionnaire analyzed the audiologists thoughts on audiological rehabilitation as well as the workplace approach. Results: There is a fine thread within each country that goes through the framework, ideology and practice. Furthermore, the study showed that there are both similarities and differences between the different countries. In general the study proved that the mindset in Sweden is more holistic compared to the other countries. Conclusion: The pressure for cost-effective care is in contrast with health care laws as short-term planned health care can counteract an holistic audiological rehabilitation

Semiotic Studies on Holistic Order in Product Design

Ahmed, Saleem S January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
‘Holistic Order’ is a new term used in this study. In literature, its synonyms such as beauty, order, visual order, and aesthetic order have been in usage for a long time. Historical studies on arts & crafts from philosophical and aesthetic perspectives reveal that the term ‘beauty’ no longer holds the same meaning as it used to for centuries. ‘Holistic Order’ is the new term being proposed in place of ‘beauty’ in product design. It is argued that this term is more appropriate in present day context. Beauty has been a study of interest to philosophers, aestheticians, poets, artists, scientists, and the common man alike for time immemorial. Though the field of industrial design has been in existence since the industrial revolution in the early 20th century, the roots of this field originates from the time of Plato and Aristotle, more than 2400 years ago. In spite of this long history, there has not been a reliable tool / framework available to product designers, which they can rely on in their pursuit to designing products that are holistic i.e. able to please not only to the physical senses but also to the emotional and mental faculties. Studies in the history of arts & crafts and fundamentals of aesthetics from a new perspective have revealed a perceptible gap in the most widely used design approach. This research work is an attempt to fulfil that gap. Using semiotic and communication theory, existence of dichotomy in product design has been established. Based on this and the widely used elements and principles approach in product design, a new integrated conceptual framework for holistic order in product design has been proposed. It is argued that this framework is more suited to designing holistically than any of the available ones. The objective of this framework is to enable better understanding of the different aspects involved in the aesthetics of product design, their relationships, and the resulting attainments. Knowledge of this framework is useful to designers for designing products in a holistic manner. In the process, more attractive, appealing, and meaningful designs are enabled. Also, it is useful to design critics for identifying factors that are responsible for aesthetic qualities and values in product design. All the interdependent nature of relationships among various parts of the framework of holistic order have been explained. ‘Holistic Order Index’ is proposed as a new measure of design qualities in product design. The Framework of Holistic Order and Holistic Order Index have been validated through qualitative and quantitative methods in two studies, one involving 30 designers and another involving 108 subjects representing the society at large. In another study involving 32 subjects, reliability of the methodology has been established. Results of these studies have been discussed in the thesis and the contributions summarized.
