A model for the integration of spiritual care into the nursing curriculum in Nigeria

Afolayan, Joel Adeleke January 2018 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Nursing) / Man is a bio-psycho-social-spiritual being, and his needs are informed by all these elements. The need for spiritual care in nursing education and practice is no longer a new concept in developed countries, nor even in some developing countries. However, in Nigeria, there is no consistent evidence of how spirituality is taught within the nursing curriculum nor how it is practised. The literature review also confirms that no existing set of rules or models for integrating spiritual care into the curriculum of nursing exists in the country. If nursing care is to be holistic, concerted attention must be paid to spiritual care, and to the training of nurses so that they can provide spiritual care within the context of holistic care for patients in the healthcare system. The main purpose of this academic work was to develop a model for the integration of spiritual care-giving into the nursing curriculum. This cross-sectional study used adapted modified Intervention Mapping (IM) strategies with a mixed method approach, to collect in-depth information.

Holistic Boolean Twig Pattern Matching for Efficient XML Query Processing

Ding, Dabin 01 May 2014 (has links)
Efficient twig pattern matching is essential to XML queries and other tree-based queries. Numerous so-called holistic algorithms have been proposed for efficiently processing the twig patterns in XML queries. However, a more general form of twig pattern, called Boolean-twig (or B-twig for short), which allows arbitrary combination of an arbitrary number of all the three logical connectives, AND, OR, and NOT, in a twig pattern, has not been adequately addressed. The theme of this study is on holistic (and efficient) B-twig pattern matching using region encoding and Dewey encoding schemes. We first adopt region encoding and propose a novel, direct approach called DBTwigMerge for holistic B-twig pattern matching, which although enjoys certain theoretical ``beauty'' and ``elegance'' but does not always outperform our prior approach, BTwigMerge. Based on the experience gained and in-depth investigation, we then come up with another new and more efficient approach, FBTwigMerge, which is proven to be the overall winner among all the holistic approaches using region encoding. In this study, we also studied the holistic B-twig pattern matching problem using Dewey encoding. The unique properties of Dewey encoding bring challenges and also benefits to this problem. By carefully addressing the challenges, this dissertation finally presents the first Dewey based holistic approach, called DeweyNOT, for efficiently solving the pattern matching problem with a subclass of B-twigs, i.e., twig queries involving arbitrary AND/NOT predicates. Extensive experimental studies have been conducted that demonstrate the viability and outstanding performance of the proposed approaches.

MEDICAL SCHOOL ADMISSION POLICY ANALYSIS: SUCCESS IN INCREASING AFRICAN AMERICANS IN MATRICULANT CLASSES

Jones, Kathleen Ann 01 December 2016 (has links)
The ranks of the medical profession have typically been filled by Anglo-Saxon males. A slow change in attitude appears to be leading toward a desire to increase diversity in the medical profession. Previous attempts to allow for increased representation of those underrepresented in medicine failed due to legal challenges. The Association of American Medical Colleges, an organization which oversees medical education, residency training, and research of both American and Canadian allopathic medical schools, has introduced Holistic Review as a method for creating a diverse population in a medical school class; this study investigates the way medical schools are incorporating these strategies into their medical school admissions policies and how effective these policies are in increasing diversity in medical school classes. The implication encourage admissions committees to modify the importance of certain selection criteria in an ongoing effort to increase diversity in their medical school classes.

PRE-ENTRY: EXPANDING THE METHODS BY WHICH PUBLIC DEFENDERS PREPARE CLIENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL RE-ENTRY PRIOR TO INCARCERATION

Lubiani, Katherine 06 September 2017 (has links)
The criminal justice system does not focus on individual needs outside of the defense against criminal charges and thus perpetuates the cycle that results in indigent people burdened with a criminal record. This paper first examines the current practices of public defenders. Next it explores the indirect consequences of involvement with the criminal justice system known as collateral consequences and the relatively new practice of holistic defense by which these consequences may be addressed. The paper then discusses issues that previously incarcerated individuals have upon their re-entry into society. Finally, the paper will introduce a new concept, “pre-entry,” inspired by the holistic defense approach.

An Improved Framework for Design Concept Generation Based On Experiential and Intuitive Methods

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Conceptual design stage plays a critical role in product development. However, few systematic methods and tools exist to support conceptual design. The long term aim of this project is to develop a tool for facilitating holistic ideation for conceptual design. This research is a continuation of past efforts in ASU Design Automation Lab. In past research, an interactive software test bed (Holistic Ideation Tool - version 1) was developed to explore logical ideation methods. Ideation states were identified and ideation strategies were developed to overcome common ideation blocks. The next version (version 2) of the holistic ideation tool added Cascading Evolutionary Morphological Charts (CEMC) framework and intuitive ideation strategies (reframing, restructuring, random connection, and forced connection). Despite these remarkable contributions, there exist shortcomings in the previous versions (version 1 and version 2) of the holistic ideation tool. First, there is a need to add new ideation methods to the holistic ideation tool. Second, the organizational framework provided by previous versions needs to be improved, and a holistic approach needs to be devised, instead of separate logical or intuitive approaches. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to make the improvements and to resolve technical issues that are involved in their implementation. Towards this objective, a new web based holistic ideation tool (version 3) has been created. The new tool adds and integrates Knowledge Bases of Mechanisms and Components Off-The-Shelf (COTS) into logical ideation methods. Additionally, an improved CEMC framework has been devised for organizing ideas efficiently. Furthermore, the usability of the tool has been improved by designing and implementing a new graphical user interface (GUI) which is more user friendly. It is hoped that these new features will lead to a platform for the designers to not only generate creative ideas but also effectively organize and store them in the conceptual design stage. By placing it on the web for public use, the Testbed has the potential to be used for research on the ideation process by effectively collecting large amounts of data from designers. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Mechanical Engineering 2014

Synaesthetic Design Expression: The Blending of the Senses and its Implications on Brand Expression

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT This research investigates the synaesthetic responses consumers have to branded consumer product designs to aid the design development process. Through proper application of synaesthetic responses, companies can create holistic experiences and brand expressions that are loved and trusted by consumers and thus achieve brand loyalty. Capturing the hearts and minds of consumers through exceptional product experiences is one of the primary goals of any design agency, retailer or Consumer Packaged Good (CPG) company today. Thousands of new products launch every year and consumers are bombarded with advertising campaigns, package designs, POP displays, product offerings and new product forms. Breaking through the visual and verbal clutter by designing for the senses is one of the key ways design firms and companies can engage with and create a stronger bond with the consumer. Connecting with consumers can be achieved through the maintenance of a compelling brand positioning and the development of brand expressions (products) that are holistically honest and express their positioning. Holistically honest designs are designs that capture the senses and the essence of the brand. Upon initial impression, the package immediately and innately “feels” right – nothing seems amiss. This includes all of the senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing combined with what the consumer knows or believes about the brand to create a meaningful gestalt. All design touchpoints should be considered in order to attain the ultimate goal of a holistic design: graphic treatment, typography, words, scent, form, color – any type of sensory stimulator as these all influence perception and ultimately product and brand trust. This study will employ qualitative and quantitative research approaches to understand consumers’ synaesthetic responses to a brand’s expressions. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Design 2015

This study was motivated by the dissatisfaction of the body representation emerged from the dualistic tradition (body/mind) and by the modem science paradigm in which body is seen as a machine. This vision has affected the physical education, which was based on a sporting model, searching for a physical fitness. The alternative term is resulting of counter culture movement, occurred during the 60's, and it refers to a way of thinking and acting out of the western modernity standards, opposing to the dominant model of the body practices based on effort, activity and maximum results. The alternative culture has looked for solutions from the Orient for the consequences of the civilization process, expressing the reconciliation body/mind and still defending other social arrangements and relationships between mankind/nature. The Alternative Body Practices (ABPs) have shown the possibility to develop works that emphasize sensibility, well-being and creativity, making possible to mankind to rescue his/her corporeidade, seeking for a new meaning for him/herself a way to be entire, searching for a complementary vision between the individual and the nature. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to analyze the understanding that elementary, secondary and under-graduating physical education teachers has regarding to ABPs. For that, information were collected through questionnaires sent to physical education teachers of public and private institutions of Rio Claro, Campinas and Piracicaba cities, São Paulo state, Brazil, including those three teaching levels. Sampling was composed by the questionnaires which returned, totaling 52. From the data analysis, it was concluded that teachers consider necessary a work with ABPs in the elementary and secondary schools, because 80,8% of them agree that a work with ABPs is important in those teaching levels...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

FormaÃÃo holÃstica do enfermeiro:realidade e desafios / Nurseâs holistic formation:reality and challenges

Francisca SÃnia de Andrade Braga Farias 16 March 2005 (has links)

Em termos de flexibilidade, houve diferenças significativas: as participantes do grupo experimental apresentaram maior flexibilidade nas medidas (MF1), (MF2) e (MF3) / Abstract: The 10 to 13-year old child is in a growth and development stage. Literature emphasizes that flexibility is greater at this stage, although it also indicates a high prevalence of postural alterations in this population's spine. Holistic Gymnastics relates itself to posture and flexibility through methodological processes used in each class, in which aspects such as relaxation, respiration, stretching and balance are approached. Aim: To relate the practice of Holistic Gymnastics to posture and flexibility in 10 to 13- year-old females. Method: A study of experimental character with 10 to 13- year- old females of the towns of Campinas/SP and Hortolândia/SP. The sample constituted of 43 healthy girls (22 in the experimental group and 21 in the control group). The quantitative postural evaluation was carried out through photogrammetry (SAPO postural evaluation software) to analyze and measure the girls' posture and flexibility. Flexibility was also measured through the third-toe-to-the-ground distance test. After the evaluation, 9 Holistic Gymnastics classes were conducted with the experimental group. Results: Data was analyzed statistically, and the 5% significance level was adopted. The Mann-Whitney test was used for comparison of the postural alterations between groups, and ANOVA was used to compare the numeric measures between the 2 groups over time. In relation to posture, the results demonstrate that, after intervention, the participants in the experimental group showed a significant reduction in the difference of lower limb length (CMI) and an approximation of the verticality pattern (AVCE) - vertical body alignment left lateral view. An increase in the coxofemoral extension was also found for the 2 groups. In terms of flexibility, there were significant differences: the experimental group participants showed greater flexibility in the measures (MF1), (MF2) and (MF3) / Mestrado / Interdisciplinaridade e Reabilitação / Mestra em Saúde, Interdisciplinaridade e Reabilitação

Människors upplevelse av yoga : Från mattan ut i livet

Lövstaf, Esmeralda January 2017 (has links)
