The right of sexual minorities under the African human rights systemHuamusse, Luis Edgar Francisco January 2006 (has links)
Magister Legum - LLM / The protection of the rights of sexual minorities in Africa is a controversial issue. It is not unusual to find newspaper reports on gross violations suffered by this minority group. Gays and lesbians are victims of violence, sometimes resulting in death. Sexual minorities in Africa are often confronted with government actions such as those of the Nigerian government that recently submitted to the parliament a Bill to make provisions for the prohibition of relationships between persons of the same sex, celebration of marriage, registration of gay clubs and societies and publicity of same sex relationships. The objective of this study was to suggest possible legal protection and recognition of sexual minority rights under the African human rights system. / South Africa

'n Nuwe Testamentiese studie in hermeneutiek : die homoseksualiteitsdebat in die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk (1986-2004) (Afrikaans)Potgieter, Jordaan 18 April 2007 (has links)
The debate about homosexuality in South Africa (and possibly the Church worldwide) does not focus primarily on the acceptance of homosexual persons, but that the church would accept and bless homosexual marriages. In their attempt to get the church to accept such marriages they (pro-gay theologians) have resorted to an hermeneutics which could be considered as postmodernistic. According to this postmodernistic hermeneutics the siences have greater importance than the Bible. The Word of God has been reduced to the words of men in their thoughts about God. This is done by casting suspicion on the Bible and by using similar examples which are not generally accepted anymore. They come to the conclusion that the Bible of today has a new version of morality. Where they do make use of the Bible, they cast suspicion by saying that the Bible has very little to say about homosexual relationships as it is known today. They try to say that the Bible is mainly concerned with perversity and that the Bible knows nothing about homosexual marriages or relationships of love and trust. In this study it has been shown that the above mentioned interpretation of the Bible concerning homosexual relationships and marriages cannot be sustained. Science cannot change a theological term (like sin). All the hermeneutic keys used in the debate (antique history – history of the church; the authority of the Bible and the use thereof; Biblical sexuality and Old and New Testament evidence) reject homosexual relationships – also those of love and trust. / Thesis (PhD (NT Studies))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / New Testament Studies / unrestricted

Background: Homosexuality historically had a series of laws that spoke against their human rights. In Sweden, a healthcare law about fair treatment exists, however, not everyone got the same care. A nurse's key area of expertise is the care and understanding of patient treatment. Aim: The aim of the literature study was to explore homosexual experiences of treatment in the meetings with healthcare professionals and to look at the included articles sample groups. Method: Literature study with descriptive design based on 12 qualitative scientific articles from the search engine MedLine and manual searches. Main results: The results showed both negative and positive experiences of meetings with healthcare professionals. The elements that influenced how the meetings were experienced were the professionals' attitudes, knowledge about the subject and usage of heteronormative words. Most of the included articles informed about the participants' ages and inclusion criteria. The largest part of participants were women and nine of twelve articles were made in Europe. Conclusion: This have shown that the treatments homosexual patients got could have been influenced by the healthcare professionals’ knowledge, attitudes and personal values. The homosexuals described both positive and negative experiences where heterosexual assumption, certain word choices and feelings of doubt have occurred. An increased knowledge and education about questions concerning homosexual’s and their experiences in the meeting with healthcare can help the undergraduate nurses to develop the capability for a more individual and positive encounter for homosexual people.

Figures et imaginaires de la réussite sociale à Yaoundé : les enjeux moraux d’un débat public / Figures and imaginaries of success in Yaounde : the moral stakes of a public debateGalland, Emmanuel 23 November 2016 (has links)
Urban Cameroonians express a sense of passing through a time of “moral crisis” concerning the paths and foundations of social success. A sets of representations and imaginaries link intimately the question of success to the denunciation of moral depravity. Critique of “misguided” forms of success implies a denunciation of corruption, nepotism, scams, homosexuality and other forms of sexuality deemed to be scandalous. Criticism is also extended to “cults” and “occult circles”, “mysticism”, and “ritual crime”, as well as other practices connected to the imaginary of witchcraft and the occult. This thesis explores issues related to these critiques. By observing the practices of different urban social groups, an emic sense of the specific conceptions, figures, and paths of success in Yaoundé show that there are several constellations of norms, values, and feelings that impact how social success is judged, perceived, and legitimated. An opposition principle emerges between, on one side, a moral economy of a facility based on the speed and disconnection of productive work, and on the other side, a moral economy of merit that is articulated around the recognition of the value of hard work, talent and competence.A number of moral stakes are structured around this opposition and are seen in the denunciation discourse of social actors. Through their critique, these actors construct, in different contexts, the “scourges”, social problems, and political “causes” related to ways of becoming rich and succeeding. This is becoming increasingly visible and spectacular in recent years with major “affaires” agitating the public and political space of Cameroon.

The enigma to the paradigm : psycholysis is not homofobicRodríguez Diéguez, María Paz 20 January 2015 (has links)
This investigation aims to respond to the critiques certain authors of queer theory have addressed to Lacanian theory, namely the accusation of homophobia. At the end of his teaching, Lacan recognized « There is no sexual relation »; and with this aphorism, he opened the door to a new paradigm oriented by the real: jouissance that aims at the impossible of the sexual relation. This substitutive jouissance, as Jacques-Alain Miller named it, doesn’t distinguish between neurosis and perversion. This new reading which goes beyond the structural clinic springs from the Borromean knot, in other words, that which holds the symbolic, real, and imaginary registers of desire and jouissance together. We purport to overcome the Oedipus complex by way of the very last Lacanian teaching. In order to do so, we revisited Freud’s extremely well-known case of the “young homosexual woman”, starting from new historical elements published in her biography entitled, Sidonie Csillag: Jeune Homosexuelle chez Freud, lesbienne dans le siècle. We will regard homosexuality from another angle thanks to the new Borromean conception. Our goal shall be to find the convergences between this new Borromean paradigm of psychoanalysis and Queer theory.

Projevy body image ve spotřebním chování specifické ženské subkultury / Tokens of body image in the consumer behavior of a specific female subcultureBartošová, Veronika January 2013 (has links)
My Master's thesis deals with "Tokens of body image in the consumer behavior of a specific female subculture", which stands for lesbian community. The aim of my thesis is to capture tokens of body image of gay women in context of their specific community, particularly in the areas of body perception, grooming and adoration of a certain female beauty ideal. The thesis is divided into five main parts. The first part deals with the theoretical background, starting with basic terminology of body image, through an outline of the historical development of ideals of female beauty, to lighting the characteristics of the lesbian subculture, not only in terms of body image. Attention was also paid to the influence of media on perception of lesbians' own body image and to the media portrayal of lesbian women. The second part describes the method that were used for obtaining primary data (CAWI). It also provides an overview of the hypothetical claims, which were primarily designed to compare body image of lesbians with heterosexual women. The third, analytical part focuses on the evaluation of the collected data to verify the hypothesis, or to justify the probable cause why some of the original assumptions were not empirically proved. In the fourth charter marketing recommendations are formulated on the basis of the survey results. The conclusions highlight the most interesting points of the thesis and suggest their potential for use in business practice.

Male homosexuality in Brazilian cinema of the 1960s and 1970sHodgson, James Neil January 2013 (has links)
The representation of homosexuality in the Brazilian cinema of the 1960s and 1970s is generally dismissed as homophobic on the grounds that it confirms stereotypical and oppressive views of homosexual men. While it is true that many films produced during the era repeat conventional notions of sexual identity, this dismissal arguably overlooks a variety of subtle and subversive representations of homosexuality. To contest the prevailing view, eleven films have been selected from important movements of Brazilian cinema of the period; these include examples of avant-garde and popular filmmaking. An analytical approach informed by queer theory – a critical account of homosexuality and sexual identity – is used to make a series of close readings of narrative form and content. It is suggested that the apparent heterosexism of many of the films is shown to be tacitly or accidentally subverted via the implication that sexual identity is unstable and contested. A number of films are shown to illustrate ways in which oppressive hierarchies might be disabled through a reconfiguring of homosexual identity. It is argued that film form – the films’ self-referential or reflexive aspects, as well as the way in which the films construct spectating positions – is the central factor in subverting conventional views of homosexuality. Such form facilitates multiple readings of the content, therefore enabling a queer interpretation to be posited. Ultimately, it is argued that the value of these films lies in the sometimes contradictory fashion in which they present oppressive notions of homosexuality on-screen while at the same time gesturing towards ways in which such oppression could be challenged.

Here is queer : nationalisms and sexualities in contemporary Canadian literaturesDickinson, Peter 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores the relationship between the regulatory discourses of
nationalism and sexuality as they operate in the cultural production and textual
dissemination of contemporary Canadian literatures. Applying recent studies in
postcolonial and queer theory to a number of works by gay and lesbian authors
written across a broad spectrum of years, political perspectives, and genres, I seek
to formulate a critical methodology which allows me to situate these works within
the trajectory of Canadian canon-formation from the 1940s to the present. In so
doing, I argue that the historical construction of Canadian literature and Canadian
literary criticism upon an apparent absence of national identity—us encapsulated
most tellingly in the "Where is here?" of Frye's "Conclusion"—masks nothing so
much as the presence of a subversive and destabilizing sexual identity—"queer."
The dissertation is made up of eight chapters: the first opens with a
Sedgwickian survey of the "homosocial" underpinnings of several foundational
texts of Canadian literature, before providing an overview—via George Mosse,
Benedict Anderson, and Michel Foucault—of the theoretical parameters of the
dissertation as a whole. Chapter two focuses on three nationally "ambivalent" and
sexually "dissident" fictions by Timothy Findley. A comparative analysis of the
homophobic criticism accompanying the sexual/textual travels of Patrick
Anderson and Scott Symons serves as the basis of chapter three. Chapter four
discusses the allegorical function of homosexuality in the nationalist theatre of
Michel Tremblay, Rene-Daniel Dubois, and Michel Marc Bouchard. Chapter five
examines how national and sexual borderlines become permeable in the lesbian-feminist
translation poetics of Nicole Brossard and Daphne Marlatt. Issues of
performativity (the repetition and reception of various acts of identification) are
brought to the fore in chapters six and seven, especially as they relate to the
(dis)located politics of Dionne Brand, and the (re)imagined communities of
Tomson Highway and Beth Brant, respectively. Finally, chapter eight revisits
some of the vexed questions of identity raised throughout the dissertation by
moving the discussion of nationalisms and sexualities into the classroom. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Knowledge and attitudes of preservice teachers towards students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered.Morgan, Daniel J. 12 1900 (has links)
The study used a survey design to ascertain the levels of knowledge and attitudes of special education and non-special education preservice and inservice teachers towards students with different sexual orientations. The results of this study are based on 408 responses from preservice and inservice teachers enrolled at seven institutions of higher education within North Carolina, Virginia, and the District of Columbia offering teacher training programs in regular and/or special education. Two previously developed instruments were used to measure dependent variables in this study. Koch's modified version of The Knowledge about Homosexuality Questionnaire developep by Harris, Nightengale & Owen was used to measure the dependent variable of the preservice and inservice teacher's knowledge about homosexuality. Herek's Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men (ATLG) measured the dependent variable of attitudes towards homosexuals. The study found no significant differences reported mean scores for knowledge or attitude of homosexuality among the teacher groups surveyed: (a) special education preservice teachers, (b) non-special education preservice teachers, (c) special education inservice teachers, and (d) non-special education inservice teachers. Neither gender nor age were found to be factors in measures of knowledge or attitude of preservice or inservice teachers. Receiving prior instruction in serving the needs of GLBT students, or with a focus GLBT issues, contributed to higher levels of knowledge and more positive attitudes. This research identified current levels of knowledge and attitudes of preservice and inservice teachers towards GLBT youth, and this information may help outline areas of possible changes necessary in teacher preparation programs, research, and policy.

This ethnography examines the intertwining of social markers such as aging, middle age, old age, sexuality, homoeroticism and intergenerational relations. The central goal is to understand how the experiences of aging and sexuality later in life are narrated by men who use websites that provide homoerotic interactions. To this end - and based on a qualitative methodology involving in-depth interviews, "on line" and "off line" informal conversations as well as participant observation - the following questions were explored: a) the management of social categories associated to mature men with homoerotic sexual practices; b) the narrative construction of temporal and generational sensibilities; c) the ways in which positive models of aging among men with homoerotic sexual practices and / or that identify themselves as homosexual have been gestated; d) the perceptions concerning the socio-spatial transformations regarding homosexual practices and identities in recent decades and, finally, e) the management of the social support networks in the aging processes of these individuals. The universe studied is composed of men who, in most cases, considered themselves as middle class, white, with a moderately high educational background, deeply involved in on line interactions, which have between 45 and 70 years old and live in São Paulo. For these men on line interactions have impacted in a positive way. These interactions were narrated as enabling significant new friendships and erotic relationships. Moreover, in contrast to some authors of the so-called LGBT Gerontology - who tend to overemphasize victimizing and disempowered scenarios as years go by - this work has foregrounded some relevant forms of agency throughout the lives and aging processes of the men who made part of my research / Doutorado / Antropologia Social / Doutor em Antropologia Social
