Adult Development of Positive Personality Traits Through Character Formation Mentoring

Colborn, Robert Mark 01 January 2016 (has links)
Positive psychologists have published hundreds of empirical studies correlating positive personality traits with improved outcomes in mental health, physical health, academic and career success, resilience, relationships, and personal happiness. But there remains a dearth of research on the emergence and development of positive personality traits. This grounded theory, qualitative research sought to discover whether positive personality traits can be developed in adult mentoring relationships. Sixteen participants responded in structured interviews about the benefits of their mentoring experiences, and in addition to performing coding analysis as described by Strauss and Corbin (1990), the researcher also compared the answers to Peterson and Seligman's taxonomy of positive traits (2004). Unprompted participant responses overwhelmingly asserted increase of positive traits, as well as five other benefit categories. Improved traits appeared across a wide range of mentee characteristics, and situations, including negative ones, as long as mentors communicated unconditional positive regard and possessed desirable competencies. Social considerations of this research include the possibility that, in combination with therapies to address negative aspects of a client situation, therapists using intentional positive trait development could support recovery, resilience, hope, wisdom, thriving, and all of the benefits positive psychology has correlated to the presence of positive personality traits. Future studies building on this research may include a longitudinal study to understand what situations and character types are most conducive for positive trait development, as well as questions regarding which traits appear in which mentoring situations.

Rachel de Queiroz was a writer deeply attached to her land and her people. It builds a connection that can be seized in the experiences she had in the places she knew and also in the literary works she wrote. In face of this geography that breathes in Rachel, we propose the thesis that a primary geography is immanent to her, applying to her life and her work. To reveal this geography, we presented people, landscapes and places of great importance to the writer; analyzed writings that allow us to relate the geographic and telluric aspects which permeate her journey; and have dedicated to the seven novels that Rachel wrote, unraveling worlds she (re)created in an imaginative way. Literary geography that (re)presents, in its own and original colors, the land and the people of Brazil, Northeast, Sertão and Ceará and reveals that destinations and searches of Rachel's characters translate her own paths. Paulo Rónai, um brasileiro made in Hungary / Paulo Rónai, a brazilian made in Hungary

Zsuzsanna Filomena Spiry 03 June 2009 (has links)
When, at the age of 34, Paulo Rónai was forced into exile from Hungary due to his Jewish origin, he was already a fully-active professional. With a PhD in Philology and Romantic languages, Rónai taught French and Italian in Budapest. In addition, he was a very active translator and began to become known in the field of literary criticism. After teaching himself Portuguese, Rónai published an anthology of Brazilian poetry in 1939. Upon his arrival in Brazil, in 1941, after being saved from the Nazis through an invitation from the Getúlio Vargas government, he was able to resume his career immediately. He taught Latin and French in several institutions, including Colégio Pedro II in Rio de Janeiro, where he assumed the French chair. He intensified his activity in the field of literary criticism, publishing in leading newspapers. Throughout the half century that he would live in his adopted country, he partook in many cultural projects, such as the translation supervision and publication of the 17-volume La Comédie Humaine by Balzac and the editing of two posthumous books by Guimarães Rosa, just to name a few. In addition to his books, including articles and reviews, Rónai published more than 1,100 times. In an attempt to delineate his intellectual profile, his literary production has been researched both in Hungary and in Brazil, initially in his private library, and later in several sources. The analysis of the resulting mapping stimulated further research toward the theoretical foundation of Paulo Rónais intellectual character, as well as the impact of that theoretical foundation on his contributions. It was concluded that all of his erudite capabilities, whether philological, humanistic, lexicographic, pedagogical, or related to translation, came together as a cohesive whole and contributed to enriching his performance as a literary critic.

Strandberg, Tina January 2015 (has links)

Ancient discipline and pristine doctrine : appeals to antiquity in the developing reformation

Soderberg, Gregory David 19 July 2007 (has links)
This thesis in Church History examines the changing attitudes of Protestants toward Church History. The primary evidence surveyed is statements within major Protestant confessions, as well as the views of selected Reformers. By focusing on how Protestant confessions either quote the church fathers, or affirm the ancient creeds of the Church, the thesis presents a general overview of how Protestants have related to Church History. This thesis takes advantage of many recent studies on the use of church fathers by the reformers, and new critical study of creeds and confessions. A study of selected reformers and Protestant confessions demonstrates that an important part of the Reformation program was the claim to continuity with the early church, as opposed to the perceived innovations of Rome. A brief survey of reformation attitudes towards history also shows that appeals to church history were largely determined by the historical and polemical context of the times. Calvin and Bucer, for instance, make stronger or weaker appeals to church history depending in which polemical context they found themselves. As a result of the hardening of confessional lines, a more critical attitude towards church history developed, especially in Anabaptism and English Puritanism. Whereas the reformers and most Protestant confessions claim continuity with the “ancient church,” the Puritans claimed continuity with the “apostolic” church. This is ironic because the Puritans wanted to reform the English church according to the model of the “best reformed churches,” whose confessions affirm the ancient creeds. Thus, this thesis provides further evidence for the claims of other scholars who have argued that there are two main view of church history within Protestantism: one that stresses continuity with the church in history, and one which stresses interpretation of the Bible free from any historical considerations. As Stephen R. Holmes has suggested, one party sought to “reform” the church while the other party sought to “re-found” the church. If Protestants have developed an anti-historical attitude, it has been partly in response to polemical circumstances. A way out of current Protestant provincialism, particularly in American fundamentalism, may be found in studying the reformers' original, more positive, attitude towards church history. / Dissertation (MA (Church History))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Church History and Church Policy / MA / unrestricted

Anthropology and literature: Humanistic themes in the ethnographic fiction of Hilda Luper and Edith Turner

Shaik, Zuleika Bibi January 2020 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This mini-thesis makes an argument for the significance of a female-dominated hidden tradition of experimental ethnographic writing in British social anthropology. It argues that the women anthropologists who experimented with creative forms of ethnography were doubly marginalised: first as women in an androcentric male canon in British social anthropology and American cultural anthropology, and second as creative writers whose work has been consistently undervalued in sombre scholarly circles. The study proposes that Hilda Beemer Kuper (1911-1995) and Edith Turner (1921-2016) should be regarded as significant in a still unexcavated literary tradition or subgenre with Anglo-American anthropology.

Capillarity: A Theory Of Mlearning And Its Application In Emerging Markets

Rogers, David 01 January 2013 (has links)
The theory of capillarity is an organic metaphor invoked to explore the role of network communications as a vehicle for education in a healthy society. Capillarity is offered as a theory in two parts: a mechanism for distribution and a method for engagement. Capillarity seeks to build an architecture that reflects radical humanism's emphasis on access and inclusion as a vehicle for classical humanism's emphasis on the individual expansion of potential and consciousness. The technical instrument whereby this program of humanist education may be deployed is mLearning
