Aeneas se onderwêreldse reis in illustrasie : ’n resepsie-historiese studie van tonele in Aeneïs VI

Swanepoel, Liani Colette 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Dept. of Ancient Studies) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / Throughout the centuries artists have visualised the imaginative works of Publius Vergilius Maro in a variety of art forms. Paintings, frescoes, sculptures and even tapestries have made the wordscenes of his great epic, the Aeneid, concrete. The thesis investigates only the illustration of the epic in manuscripts and printed texts or translations. The illustrations of scenes in Book VI – the journey of Aeneas in the underworld – are studied using the reception-historical approach. This is to determine whether the illustrations of the Trojan hero’s journey in the underworld reflect the reception of the Aeneid in the different eras or periods. The illustrator is a “reader” of the Aeneid text or translation and consequently his/her illustration of a particular scene reflects his/her own visual interpretation thereof. Illustrations of Book VI in manuscripts like the Vergilius Vaticanus of late Antiquity and the mid- 15th century Riccardiana Vergilius of Apollonio di Giovanni are examined. A study of illustrations in printed texts or translations range from the 1502 Grüninger edition of Vergil edited by Sebastian Brant to the Book VI illustration of Thom Kapheim in a textbook published in 2001. The aim is to establish how illustrators associated with Book VI, interpreted it, how their environment and the spirit of the age influenced their visualisation and how their illustrations reflect the reception of the epic throughout the centuries. Such a study hopes to provide a contribution to Vergilian reception and Nachleben. In the process a better understanding can be obtained for the importance and changing role of Aeneid VI and the whole epic in different eras. It is found that the illustrators of the Aeneid – influenced by the different spirit of their times and environments – brought forth unique visual interpretations of scenes in Book VI that suggest a particular reception of the epic at that specific point of time. The illustrative spectrum of Book VI throughout the centuries can be summarised as follows: revival, allegorisation, pedagogic, realistic decoration and eventually increasingly unrealistic decoration. From late Antiquity to the beginning of the 21st century, the illustrative visualisation of the journey of Aeneas in the underworld indicates that there has always been a definitive response to Vergil and his epic.

India Book House und die Comic-Serie Amar Chitra Katha (1970-2002), Eine kulturwissenschaftliche Medienanalyse

Barth, Norbert Victor January 2007 (has links) (PDF)

The work Psiquê (2010) Angela Lake, was the object studied throughout this research. The author, rescuing the classical greek myth of Eros and Psyche, recounts the story of lovers with innovative features and instigators of the imagination. The author Teresa Colomer (2003), in The formation of the literary reader: children's storytelling and current youth has allowed us to understand a little more about the Lake trajectory within the historical context of children and youth literature in Brazil. The words deserve a single chapter, where you can discuss the importance of hybrid genre and its ability to unite prose and poetry without losing the quality of text, so we were guided by studies of Octavio Paz (2012), in The Bow and the lira. The author discusses the importance of word and its plural ability to be more than mere linguistic signs. The illustrations have preserved the poetic, as raised the multiplicity of meanings in this way were studied, first, alone. The light theories Sophie Van der Linden (2011) in Order to read the picture book could analyze the images so that each of them could exhibit its potency. But as word and image can not be dissociated from this context, we developed a final chapter to show the union between the two media. We note from the reflections of Mircea Eliade (2012), in Myth and reality that Psiquê extinguishes the boundaries of literary genres, recovering and returning the poetic origins / O presente trabalho procurou analisar como uma narrativa pode ser construída a partir da interação entre duas linguagens: verbal e visual.

A Missed Opportunity : illustrated Press and Comic Films in Pre-1915 France

Houillere, Jérémy 25 January 2019 (has links)
The links between the cinema and the illustrated press were perceived very early by the observers. Now, if historians seem to agree on an "influence" of the illustrated press on the comic production of French cinema, humorous newspapers are not very interested in cinema in general and completely, or almost completely, ignore comic films. How to explain this phenomenon ? This thesis proposes to develop three lines of thought. First, we try to understand the way in which the illustrated press saw the emergence and growth of the film show at the turn of the 19th century until the mid-1910s. For most chroniclers the cinema appears as an intruder among the Parisian stage shows, deporting in a way the rivalry between theater and cinema in the illustrated press. Then, by looking at the proximity between films and newspapers, it appears that cinema borrows from newspapers as much as it recycles their comic stories, modernizes them. This leads us finally to consider the two media from the angle of their differences, both ideological and political, preventing a meeting that seemed at first sight inevitable.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Thais Regina.pdf: 7142284 bytes, checksum: 2477288921627880d68c3803d0b9746f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-02-15 / Leguminosae Juss. is the third largest family of Angiosperms, comprising 727 genera and 19,325 species. Due the great N2 fixation in the soil, this family represents one of the leading families in floristic, phytosociological studies and recovery projects of degraded areas. However, some of these species have dormancy, which hinders germination. Such species variety can lead to difficulties in identification, particularly in sterile sample collection. Therefore this study aimed to develop a list with field tips, systematic identification keys and an illustrated guide, addressing the major vegetative diagnostic features of Leguminosae arboreal of Corredor de Biodiversidade Santa Maria, PR; as well as evaluate the germination test and treatments to overcome Seed dormancy of 10 Mimosa bimucronata (DC.) Kuntze. Samples have been collected in different areas of the Corridor. Legumes collected were photographed, recording morphological and vegetative stem rhytidome, staining the inner bark and / or sapwood, presence of gum shape of the leaflets, the presence of spines, glands, hairiness, and when present, flower and fruit. The samples were identified and housed into the Herbario da Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná. For breaking dormancy were tested different treatment and also performed curve soaking to these seeds. Was prepared with a list of 29 tips field Leguminosae species found in the study area, which were made for one dichotomous key and a guide with plates illustrating the main diagnostic vegetative characteristics in order to assist in the identification of species of Leguminosae present in West of Paraná. The treatments with higher germination percentage and better germination speed were: immersion in sulfuric acid (10 min); soaking in acetone for 15 min, cutting the integument and immersion in water at 80oC (cooling in 24 hours), being the latter the most indicated. But all are efficient to overcome dormancy of M. bimucronata by increasing the percentage of germinated seeds and germination rate / Leguminosae é a terceira maior família de Angiospermas, compreendendo 727 gêneros e 19.325 espécies, representando uma das principais famílias em estudos florísticos e fitossociológicos.

Viewing Victorian Prisoners: Representations in the Illustrated Press, Painting, and Photography

Boasso, Lauren 01 January 2016 (has links)
Victorian prisoners were increasingly out of sight due to the ending of public displays of punishment. Although punishment was hidden in the prison, prison life was a frequent subject for representation. In this dissertation, I examine the ways Victorian illustrated newspapers, paintings, and photographs mediated an encounter with prisoners during a time when the prison was closed to outsiders. Reports and images became a significant means by which many people learned about, and defined themselves in relation to, prisoners. Previous scholarship has focused on stereotypes of prisoners that defined them as the “criminal type,” but I argue prisoners were also depicted in more ambiguous ways that aligned them with “respectable” members of society. I focus on images that compare the worlds inside and outside the prison, which reveal instabilities in representations of “the prisoner” and the ways this figure was defined against a societal norm. Such images draw attention to the act of looking at prisoners and often challenge a notion of the prison as a space of one-sided surveillance.

Space, vision and identity : imagining and inventing Shanghai in the courtesan illustrations of Dianshizhai Pictorial (1884-1898)

Yu, Miao, 1974- January 2006 (has links)
This thesis investigates various representational modes and strategies in the Shanghai courtesan illustrations in Dianshizhai Pictorial. The aim of the study is to examine how Shanghai's early modern identity was imaged, imagined and contested through the courtesan figure. I argue that by establishing a new urban iconography, Dianshizhai Pictorial transformed the Shanghai courtesan from a traditional archetypical meiren to a universal image of the urban beauty. On the one hand, the modern city, previously an alien concept, was made familiar and acceptable through the image of the Shanghai courtesan. On the other hand, the ambivalence of the courtesan's new image mirrored a mixed feeling of fear, anxiety and disdain towards the emerging metropolis. The courtesan illustrations, hence, served as an important domain where different public understandings of the city were negotiated and expressed in pictorial terms.

The work of the Parisian bookseller Antoine Vérard (1485-1512) : production, use and circulation of the images in the early illustrated books

Bonicoli, Louis-Gabriel 03 December 2015 (has links)
For the purpose of my study, two catalogues were put together. The first one is a critical list of the editions attributed to Vérard (updating those of John Macfarlane and Mary Beth Winn). The second one is a list of all the cuts used in those editions with their occurrences. My analysis shows that these cuts were based on drawings of at least 13 artists. The Master of Robert Gaguin and, perhaps, the Master of the Chroniques scandaleuse were among them. Vérard probably sold books some time before he started publishing. The study shows that his use of woodcuts was inspired by bookseller-publishers from Paris, Lyons and Strasburg instead of following the manuscripts. The way Vérard used the cuts changed during his career. It could indicate an evolution in the way people read illustrations. Indeed, during the XVth and XVIth centuries, the number of book owners was continuously increasing, and so was the amount of books possessed by each of them. Vérard was probably one of the very few publishers able to produce books for every kind of reader (merchants, nobility, clergy, scholars, women), regardless of their wealth (thanks to the customisation of the copies). That is why we can say that he contributed greatly to the growing popularity of the Parisian art of illustrated books.

České ilustrované časopisy 2. pol. 19. stol. / Czech Illustrated Magazines of the Second Half ot he 19th Century

Dlábková, Markéta January 2016 (has links)
Czech Illustrated Magazines of the Second Half of the 19th Century Markéta Dlábková Abstract of the thesis Illustrated magazines are specific phenomenon in the 19th century culture. Between the 1860s and 1890s they published an enormous number of pictorial materials of diverse content and quality. Apart from general social importance they played a significant role in the world of art as well. Today they can serve as a beneficial source of knowledge about situation on Czech as well as European art scene in the period. The so-called penny-magazines of the 1830s can be seen as predecessors of illustrated magazines. They presented a cheap and popular source of knowledge and amusement, together with considerable amount of xylographic illustrations. However, it was the second half of the 19th century that witnessed a real boom of illustrated magazines. At the beginning of the 1840s, the Illustrated London News, the Leipziger Illustrirte Zeitung and L'Illustration established the character of this type of periodicals. In following years there were many other magazines rising throughout entire Europe. In the Czech lands, first examples of the type can be found at the end of the 1850s. Květy (1865-1872), Světozor (1867-1899) and Zlatá Praha (1884-1929) belong among the most successful periodicals. The thesis deals...
