Exploring the interplay of the entrepreneurial process and the incubation process

Halm, Lisa, Mörke, Oscar January 2019 (has links)
Entrepreneurship and start-ups are important factors for economic growth and development. As the surrounding innovation ecosystem is becoming increasingly complex, it gets more difficult for entrepreneurs to find the right path. Incubators are important when it comes to facilitating and supporting new ventures. In this research, we conducted 19 semi-structured interviews of which five were held with public incubators, four with private incubators, nine with incubatees and one with Vinnova (a government authority that plays a huge part within the existence of public incubators) in order to gain an understanding of the interplay of the incubation process and the entrepreneurial process. As for analyzing the collected data we used a thematic analysis with an inductive approach. Throughout the coding process, we extracted the following three main topics: role of an incubator, incubation process and interplay. However, a distinction between public and private incubators was approved as applicable that determines the incubators’ purpose, objectives and operations. Our findings suggest that incubators play an important role in supporting and guiding the start-ups by transferring knowledge and asking the right questions as a fundament for the further entrepreneurial process. Continuous communication and expectation management are shown as crucial throughout the interplay of the two processes. Lastly, the disconnection from the incubatees should be done carefully, e.g. through a non-proactive aftercare.

Möcander, Filip January 2020 (has links)
Background: A business incubator is an entrepreneurial development program för start up businesses. Firms in a start up phase are a part of the program in a certain amount of time where they recieve an office space, business advice and development. Together with other incubated companies are they developing their business ideas in a flexible office structure. Furthermore are social networks a major competitive advantage for start up businesses where they can receive competence, capital and business oppertunities. Trust is a major component in order to make the social networks to function. Building trust between to firms creates a relation where they can gain different types of advantages and resources. An incubated business can encouter different types of challenges and problem within an incubator such as homogeneus competence and business networks. Also, trust issues against other incubated businesses and finally problems with being able to develope their firm further after the incubation program.    Research Question: What similarities and differences within the incubation program are the incubated businesses comprising?   Purpose: The purpose of the study is to compare the incubated business actors expectations and experiences of an incubator.   Method: The paper has a qualitative research method and a comparative research design. Furthermore a comparative study of the incubated businesses expectations and experiences from an incubators (Foretagsfabriken). The data was gathered from four incubated businesses who are operating within the same incubator. The firms that participated in the study where Measure and Change, Varldens Chans, Lumispectra and YLDR.   Conclusion: The internal and external network has not met the expectations from the incubated businesses. It has not been organized or efficient with enough interesting actors for them to further develope their business. The trust between the incubator and the incubated businesses has been affected negatively except for YLDR. Furthmore, the acess to different types of capital has partially met the expectations that the start up comapnies had, epescially the social and the human capital. However, YLDR was the only company that where their expectations for financial capital was fulfilled.

Finns det direkta kopplingar? : En kvalitativ studie om mål och dess påverkan på inkubationsprocessen hos svenska inkubatorer / Are there any direct relationships? : A qualitative study about goals and their influenceon the incubation process of Swedish business incubators

Abukaf, Ward, Gustafsson, Johan January 2021 (has links)
Background: Business incubators are organizations with a purpose to help new ventures grow and survive their early years. There are descriptions of the general incubation process, but clear motivations of their process design are sorely missing. Some researchers suggest links between the goals of organizations and their process design, but a clear connection seems to be missing. By connecting goals and processes, this study aims to illustrate how processes are formed within business incubators as well as other types of organizations. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe how the goals of Swedish non-profit incubators influence the design of business incubators’ incubation processes. Methodology: The study is based on a constructionist perspective with an abductive approach, which in turn has led to an iterative study process. It is based on a qualitative research design and investigates 11 respondents through a small-N-study. Respondents were chosen based on a mostly goal-driven selection process, and empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with each respondent. A thematic analysis was conducted on this data to answer the research questions posed. Conclusion: The study draws clear connections between goals of Swedish non-profit business incubators and their incubation processes. These connections can be made from both organizational goals and specific goals within the organizations. Incubators' selection processes are largely affected by the different goals of the organization. This is also true for networking and guidance activities within the incubator. In addition, the study has shown that specific goals within the incubators are largely influenced by their organizational goals.

Health industry is one of the most innovative sector at the economy and it´s constituted also of great corporations and health care manufacture equipment and biotechnology small firms that compete at health equipment manufactory and biotechnology market niches. Ribeirão Preto is characterized as one of the technological region at São Paulo state. The development of SUPERA is one of the strategies adopted to consolidate the city as a health technological polar region. This work analysis the social relations between technological-based firms and institutional agents of health sector. For this purpose it´s used social networks methods to calculate specific measures such as density and centrality degree of actors. It evidences that SUPERA is at the center of studied information and cooperation networks. Theorists defend that these kind of network support companies´ innovation process and its competitiveness. The analysis of density and centrality measures so as actor´s scores of 2-mode matrices where calculated using the software Ucinet. The results confirm the central role of SUPERA for the creation of new TBFs; identify that the studied firms are inserted in low density networks and that strong relations seems to exist more frequently in cooperation relations between university-firms rather than with another institutions. It concludes that there are few entrepreneur´s information exchange relations and that they do not recognize the relevance of institutional agents in the firms innovation process. Cooperative action is almost inexistent or occurs in the informal level without relevance to the TBFs´ innovative system. The incubation process seems to be the extension of academic projects that tends to the mantain the distances between firms and market reality.

Processo de incubação e características empreendedoras: a percepção de gestores de EBT’s graduadas / Incubation process and entrepreneurship characteristics: the perception of graduated tbc managers

Goulart, Cristiane Silveira 13 January 2017 (has links)
The present work was carried out in the Santa Maria technological incubator (ITSM), in order to analyze how the incubation process contributes to the development of the entrepreneurial characteristics, in the perception of TBC managers graduated at ITSM. Thus, the data were collected through semi-structured interviews with nine managers of graduated companies, and the questions during the interview focused on their life history, professional trajectory and incubation process and through the application of the questionnaire developed by Mansfield et al. (1987), on entrepreneurial behavioral characteristics (CCE's), with the same interview respondents. The categories of analysis defined a priori were: Incubation process and Entrepreneurial behavioral characteristics. The categories of analysis defined not a priori, based on the interviewees' reports, were: Influence of family on professional choice and Need for management knowledge. The profile of the managers participating in the survey according to the measurement made from the application of the questionnaire indicates a satisfactory level of development of the CCE’s. Through the analysis of the data collected in the interviews and in the questionnaire, it was possible to evaluate that the objective of the study has been met, since according to the perception of TBC managers graduated at ITSM, the incubation process was decisive for their enterprises sustainability and, in addition, it provided the development of these individuals as entrepreneurs.

O desafio do processo educativo na prática de incubação de empreendimentos econômicos solidários / The challenge of the educational process in practice of incubation of solidary economical enterprises

Culti, Maria Nezilda 04 August 2006 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the intrinsic limits of the process of construction of knowledge through the educational action among advisors (educators) and cooperated workers (scholars) in practice of incubation of the solidary economical enterprises. It is an empiric research accomplished with educators of an Academical Incubator of solidary economical enterprises and workers of two cooperatives auto managed. Most of the analyzed material was collected through field research in the cooperatives and in the incubator. As theoretical reference we got support on the writings of Freire, Cortella, and Vázquez among others. The answers to the subjects built along the study evidence positive points that still represent progresses in the direction of the educational and other action of tension and conflicts that indicate ways for the rereading of the educational process, so much for the students as for the educators. It was evident the importance and the need of the university to act through incubators interacting with the community, taking the knowledge that disposes for the workers cooperated that difficultly they would have access in another way, as well as the positive effects that occurs of that action in the academic midst and for the workers. It was also denoted that in the process of incubation of the workers\' solidary economical enterprises there is a complexity that demands significant efforts on the part of the educators and students to reach the objectives proposed in the incubation process, that necessarily passes, for an interactive relationship and dialogic. However, it is an educational process that modifies the circumstances, the men and the women in their way of being and acting. There are difficulties of both parts, a lot of barriers that are broken and other not yet, but it is undeniable the construction and reconstruction of knowledge for the actors involved in several aspects. The educators wake up for another form of seeing the world, it stimulates the self-criticism as educator and person, enriches and modifies the form of teaching and the practice of the interdisciplinarity. It stimulates the association among teaching, researches and extension in the university. The students also change the form of thinking and acting. They feel safer, respected and empowered to interact in the society. They start to dispose of citizenship, autonomy to exercise the automanagement and better quality of life.
