This dissertation is a descriptive grammar of Yongning Na (Mosuo), a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in southwestern China. The theoretical approaches taken are functional syntax and the discourse-based approach to language description and documentation. The aim of this dissertation is to describe the ways that the language's features and subsystems intersect to make Na a unique entity: analyticity; zero anaphora; OV word order; topic/comment information structure; a five-part evidential system; a conjunct/disjunct-like system that intersects with evidentiality and verbal semantics; prolific grammaticalization; overlap between nominalization and relativization and associated structures; representation of time through aspect, Aktionsarten, adverbials, and discourse context; and the Daba shamanic register. / text

A sílaba em yaathe / The syllable in yaatheSilva, Fábia Pereira da 18 November 2011 (has links)
In this work, we propose an analysis of the syllable structure in Yaathe, in order to identify the phonetics and phonologic characters that determine the syllabic pattern of the language and to define this syllabic default. The theoretical assumptions used in the analysis are those of Autossegmental Phonology, theoretical proposal of the so-called nonlinear phonology, which considers the syllable as part of the prosodic organization, with its components hierarchically arranged. The general and motivational arguments of this theory, as well as their theoretical and methodological approaches are explained and applied to the analysis on the basis of Goldsmith (1976, 1990 and 1995), Katamba (1989), Gussenhoven & Jacobs, (1998) and Spencer (2005). In the carrying out of the work, we use the commonly used methodology in descriptive linguistics research, involving collection, transcription, treatment and elicitation of data, which were analyzed according to the theoretical model adopted. Ladefoged (1996, 2001) and Baart (2010), among others, supplied us with the orientations for the acoustic phonetic analyzes that was executed by using the Praat program. The work is divided in three chapters. In the first one, we show combinations of segments and undertake an acoustic analysis of consonants sequences to check if they are set to true clusters or if it was a vowel, even though reduced, in the transition of two segments. In the second chapter, we analyze the syllabic structure of the language, checking how the syllable is organized and what principles and restrictions are applied in this process. In the third and final chapter, we present an analysis of the processes that directly interfere with the syllabification. / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Alagoas / Neste trabalho, propomos uma análise da estrutura da sílaba em Yaathe, de modo a identificar as características fonéticas e fonológicas que determinam o padrão silábico da língua e a definir esse padrão silábico. Os pressupostos teóricos que utilizamos na análise são os da Fonologia Autossegmental, proposta teórica da fonologia dita não-linear, que considera a sílaba como sendo parte da organização prosódica, com seus constituintes organizados hierarquicamente. Os argumentos gerais e motivadores dessa teoria, bem como seus pressupostos teóricos e metodológicos, são explicitados e aplicados à análise a partir de Goldsmith (1976, 1990 e 1995), Katamba (1989), Gussenhoven e Jacobs, (1998) e Spencer (2005). Na execução do trabalho, utilizamos a metodologia comumente usada na pesquisa da linguística descritivista, com coleta, transcrição, tratamento e elicitação dos dados, que foram submetidos à análise de acordo com o modelo teórico adotado. Para a análise fonética acústica, utilizamos o Praat e nos apoiamos nas orientações de uma vasta literatura sobre o tema, principalmente Ladefoged (1996, 2001) e Baart (2010). A dissertação apresenta três capítulos. No primeiro capítulo, mostramos combinações de segmentos e empreendemos uma análise acústica de sequências de consoantes para verificarmos se essas se configurariam como verdadeiros clusters ou se ocorreria uma vogal, mesmo que reduzida, na transição entre os dois segmentos. No segundo capítulo, analisamos a estrutura silábica da língua, verificando de que forma a sílaba se organiza e quais os princípios e restrições que são aplicados nessa estruturação. No terceiro e último capítulo, apresentamos uma análise dos processos que interferem diretamente na silabificação.

I do two things in my dissertation. One is to tell the history of academic research on my language from the perspective of a Native person who has been involved in this work as an assistant to non-Native researchers. The other is to explain more about my culture and language and how it works from the perspective of a Yakima person who has spoken and used the language her whole life.
My most important task in this dissertation is to explain at more length some of the most basic vocabulary about our ancient culture and way of life. I do this by writing about different important parts of traditional life - life circles, sweathouse, ceremonies, horses, and foods - and explaining the words we use to talk about these and how those words explain the deeper meaning of what we do.
I write this dissertation for the Ichishkíin speaking communities in hope that by documenting our lost traditions they will have a resource from which to learn our ancestors' ways and language. Detailing the traditional practices offers a much needed historical and social accounting of each. I include various dialects and practices shared by other Ichishkíin speaking communities. I incorporate texts, songs, descriptions of dances, and practices in Ichishkíin.
This dissertation contributes also to the fields of sociolinguistics and theoretical linguistics, as well as historical and cultural anthropology. Despite the best efforts of some anthropologists and linguists, all the work done on Yakima Ichishkíin is by researchers from outside the community and is inevitably seen and presented through the lens of the English language, Euro-American culture, and the Western tradition of "objective" scholarship. I am in a unique position to present the research on my language as a contribution to academic scholarship but from a very different perspective, that of a Native speaker and scholar. Implicit in my view of scholarship is the way researchers should work with Native people; therefore, I address how linguists can better work with community members. I discuss the protocols and etiquette expected by Native people in working with non-Natives.

The thesis, Indigenous language programming and citizen participation in Ugandan broadcasting: an exploratory study constitutes an analysis of the significance of policy on indigenous language programming in Uganda's broadcast media. The thesis is conceived broadly within a critical studies' framework. It emphasizes the role of the broadcast media in the public sphere, as well as policy on linguistic diversity in making the public sphere more accessible to the majority of Ugandans. Fundamental assumptions of the thesis are the following:
* The imperatives of the market are in tension with the need to preserve a significant
amount of indigenous language broadcasting in Uganda's broadcast media for purposes of
diversity;
* This tension can be discerned in the political-economic environment within which the
broadcast media in Uganda have evolved and operate as well as in public debate on
indigenous language programming in the broadcast media;
* The current state of the media's structure, operation and regulation have their roots in
Uganda's political history; and
* Policy on the indigenous languages has a bearing on Ugandans' capacity to participate
meaningfully in the democratic process via the broadcast media.
The thesis documents key social, political and economic factors surrounding policy on
indigenous language broadcasting in Uganda using interviews, an analysis of Uganda's
political history as well as key legal documents related to diversity and participation. It
documents public debate on the significance of language policy for the participation of
Ugandans in the democratic process through the broadcast media and examines how changes
in the structure and operation of Uganda's broadcast media, especially since the liberalisation of the airwaves in the early 1990s, are perceived by Ugandans to have affected their participation in the democratic process through the media. Finally the thesis makes
recommendations for future communication policy with regards to the role of language in

Essa língua, da família Pano, é falada por 250 pessoas no estado do Amazonas, sendo a grande maioria monolíngüe em matis. O trabalho inclui a etno-história dos matis, seu modo de vida atual e sua língua, bem como algumas características da família Pano. Apresenta ainda, um estudo sobre alguns princípios de lexicologia e lexicografia e do fazer lexicográfico, como também as relações entre a lexicografia, a lexicologia e a semântica. Algumas considerações sobre dicionários bilíngües são feitas a partir da comparação de cinco dicionários bilíngües indígena-português. Esclarecemos os procedimentos adotados na compilação do dicionário matis-português, pondo em prática a metodologia lexicográfica. Consta, também, nesta tese, um capítulo sobre alguns tópicos descritivos da morfossintaxe da língua matis, a fim de auxiliar o leitor no entendimento dos verbetes do dicionário. Por fim, apresentamos o dicionário matis-português, precedido de algumas explicações concernentes à sua organização. O dicionário apresentado nesta tese compreende 1547 entradas, organizadas em ordem alfabética. A notação utilizada é a fonológica. Para cada entrada são fornecidas informações gramaticais, semânticas e pragmáticas / Abstract: The objective of this dissertation is to present the lexicon of the Matis language through a matis-portuguese bilingual dictionary. Matis language belongs to Pano family languages and 250 persons at the Amazonas State, Brazil speak it. The majority of Matis speakers are monolingual people. This work contains an ethno-history of Matis people, their contemporary way of life and their language, as well some characteristics of the Pano family languages. We also present a study about some fundaments of lexicology, lexicography and lexicographical work. The relations among lexicography, lexicology, and semantics are shown in a specific topic. We consider bilingual dictionaries, taking a comparison among five indigenous - portuguese bilingual dictionaries. At the first part of the dissertation we explain the proceedings taken in the compilation of matis dictionary, calling the attention of the reader to the fact that these proceedings follow the lexicographical methodology. On this dissertation, we present yet a chapter about some descriptive morphosyntax topics in Matis language in order to allow the reader to understand better the entries. Finally, the Matis dictionary is preceded by some explanation about its organization. The dictionary presented on this work has 1547 entries, organized in an alphabetical sequence. Language management of Nahuatl in Mexico This thesis describes the current status of Nahuatl language, and disccus its functioning and position within the institutional structures of Mexican society, as well as language community in the municipality of Chicontepec in northeastern Mexico. Nahuatl is one of the best-known indigenous languages with wider distribution across the Mexico and according to the latest census, there are one and half million speakers of the language. The aim of this paper is to present the key moments of the relationship between Spanish and Nahuatl. The paper analyzes how to manage the problems associated with the language problems associated with Nahuatl and other indigenous languages from the second half of the twenty century to the present. On the basis of empirical data describes in detail the use of Nahuatl and the transmission within the selected families and communities in the bilingual Chicontepec. In four communities discussed the linguistic behavior of the population with emphasis on intergenerational language transmission. The Nahua community have experienced over the past 30 years, the linguistic dynamic changes that result in different language skills in different generations, genders and social groups. Indian groups, segregated and silenced by the different contexts of population
density of the geopolitical frontiers. Living currently in the frontier between Brazil
and Bolivia, the Chiquitano of the Brazilian communities live in a process of
ethnogenesis, searching for favorable ways to ressignification of the ethnic
collectivity and to the citizenship of law through the identity recognition and the
demarcation of their lands. And in this way, attempting to contribute for the
strengthening and the revitalization of the Chiquitano language is that this work is
contextualized. Based on several theoretical and methodological premises, this
Thesis addresses historical, sociolinguistic, phonetic and phonological aspects of
the Chiquitano language in the Brazilian communities of Vila Nova Barbecho,
Acorizal, Central and Fazendinha, in the municipality of Porto Esperidião, in the
State of Mato Grosso. Reflections about the situation of endangered language
experienced in these communities and the Indigenous people´s involvement in the
actions for the strengthening of the identity and in the initiatives for the
revitalization of their ancestral mother tongue are also presented in this thesis. It is
also shown how the dialogic contact among the research for Doctorate, the
socialization of the linguistic data and the Chiquitano community´s motivation
served as a basis for actions and pedagogical proposals, which subsidized the
definition of an experimental orthography and encouraged didactic activities,
seeking motivation of the learners for the appropriation of the Chiquitano language
and culture. / Os Chiquitano, pouco conhecidos no Brasil, fazem parte dos grupos
indígenas contemporâneos, segregados e silenciados pelos diversos contextos de
povoamento das fronteiras geopolíticas. Habitando a região fronteiriça entre o
Brasil e a Bolívia, atualmente, os Chiquitano brasileiros vivem um processo de
etnogênese, buscando caminhos favoráveis à ressignificação da coletividade
étnica e à cidadania de direito através do reconhecimento identitário e da
demarcação de suas terras. E nesta trilha, buscando contribuir para o
fortalecimento e a revitalização da Língua Chiquitano é que este trabalho se

This paper details one journey towards the language; the struggle through a colonial terrain rife with institutional and cognitive barriers, the journey to return to Anishinaabe ways of knowing, to articulating Anishinaabe pedagogy in a contemporary urban context and the work done to fulfill the vision of the Elders. There are no “best practices” only stories that exemplify an Anishinaabe axiological framework so that the causes and effects can be better understood, taken up and improved upon.
