Considering that, a historical contextualization of the phenomenon (informal work) in which my object is inserted was developed. The analysis of the literature addressing the subject as to its concepts, as well as the field observation of the commerce inside the compositions in different days and times, substantiate this study to faithfully de-scribe the informal work carried out, which despite the illegality, represents the sub-sistence of those individuals. The relation of those illegal activities and the society in a general perspective was approached, based on the field observations and on the interviews of a selected group of workers.

In this sense, informal learning that is integrated into the daily lives of people at work, gain importance in the organizational and academic scenery. Therefore the objective of this research is to identify and analyze the factors that influence informal learning in a sales team. The methodology used was quantitative and the data were collected using online survey. The results indicate that people use informal learning as they seek to learn something new in the workplace. They reveal that environmental factors (inhibitors) are not impacting the engagement of the staff in informal learning activities and personal characteristics (facilitators) on the other hand, play the role of motivator for learning. Comparisons were also made between the sales team results and research with teachers, human resource professionals as well as information technology specialists, indicating no significant differences among these groups of professionals.

O discurso musical Rap: expressão local de um fenômeno mundial e sua interface com a educação / The rap musical discourse: local expression of a worldwide phenomenon and its interface with education

No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao_IOLANDA_ MACEDO.pdf: 2985611 bytes, checksum: e1bc545fe48a88e24ffb3f661aa64ea3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-03-05 / This study aims at examining the educational processes that are inherent to hip hop. This cultural movement emerged in the United States, created primarily by young people from African American and Latin American communities in the suburbs of New York city in the late 1970s. Four elements are present in the constitution of hip hop: the DJ, MC, breaking and graffiti writing; later, knowledge was included as another element. The performance of the DJ and the MC originates the rap genre. This musical genre is widely consumed, mainly by young people from many countries, since the rap style has gone through a process of globalization, in which the cultural industry, especially the North American one, played a key role. The movement has complex roots and, consequently, presents a heterogeneous context. In this sense, even though hip hop is related to a common collective universe, in the emergence of the street culture, it presents conflicts and contradictions, as in any other community. The hip hop movement came to Brazil through the media, but we consider that this transposition process was not based solely on the passive consumption, but on its reappropriation. This way, Brazilian hip hop is constituted as a local expression of a worldwide phenomenon. Rap, besides being a musical genre consumed by young people from the Brazilian suburbs, is also a generator of meanings, and its musical discourse is characterized as one of the stages of this production. Thus, besides listening to the songs, the public also wants to know who make them, and what their opinions, ideas and understanding of reality are. This production of meaning also permeates an aesthetic, behavioral, political and ideological construction. In order to explain such debate, we also use the concept of identity. The understanding of the educational processes intrinsic to rap is mainly due to the understanding of education in its broadest sense. In this sense, we consider that rap, as an deliberate musical discourse, propitiates a process of informal education. We aim at identifying in Brazilian rap, in which crime and violence are prevalent in the presentation of discourse, how the rappers try to convince the public to share a certain understanding of the historical reality, in particular the economic and social segregation experienced in the suburbs. Through this discourse and informal educational act, the rappers also aim at stimulating a change of behavior in his listeners, trying to lead them to participate of their action strategy towards a social change. A atuação do DJ e do MC origina o rap.

Envelhecimento, aparência e significados entre idosas do Brasil e da Espanha / Aging, appearance and meanings among old women from Brazil and Spain

Yokomizo, Patricia da Silva 11 October 2017 (has links)
Apoio: Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) / The discourse on old age has been in force in the last decades as a synonym with decadence, promoting widely ways to combat aging through the use of products and services that promise eternal youth, especially to women. In this context, the appearance is presented by different informal educators, mainly the media and advertising, as an important resource for engagement in social life. Purpose: to investigate, characterize and compare, in the context of informal education and social engagement, how Brazilian and Spanish elderly women, with low income and schooling, construct their personal appearances. Originality/value: analysis of the potential of appearance for the management of female aging in a cross-cultural context and elaboration of a register on the ways of composing the personal aspects among a group less investigated in relation to the theme. Method: qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research, based on ethnographic method. Use of free and participant observation, informal conversations, in-depth interviews, documentation and photographic records techniques. Use of semi-structured script and field notebook. The participants were: 1) nine Brazilian women and 11 Spanish women aged 80 and over; 2) living most of their lives, respectively, in São Paulo and Madrid cities; 3) participants in community life; 4) housewives in old age; 5) low income and schooling; 6) without cognitive impairment. Application of Free and Informed Consent Term. Findings: it was found that the construction of the appearance is accomplished throughout life. For both Brazilian and Spanish, the ways of composing and meaning personal presentation are related to their informal education and their social engagement. The most active informal educators are, in particular, family members, friends and professionals of the centers of coexistence for the elderly. Among the meanings transmitted through the appearance, for both groups, the main ones were decency, naturalness and femininity. In general, no significant transcultural differences were found considering the variables age, gender, income and schooling. Conclusions: it is understood that appearance is an interesting variable for studies and actions around the ways of getting older and getting involved in different social contexts. It is suggested to continue with research on the subject, relating it to other variables not explored in this study, such as marital status and generation, which were also relevant. Housing Diversity and Consolidation in Low-Income Colonias: Patterns of House Form and Household Arrangements in Colonias of the US-Mexico Border

Reimers-Arias, Carlos Alberto 2009 August 1900 (has links)
Colonias are low-income settlements on the US-Mexico border characterized by poor infrastructure, minimum services, and an active housing construction with a high self-help and self-management component. Housing in colonias is very diverse showing house forms that include temporary and permanent structures, campers, trailers or manufactured houses and conventional homes. Most of this housing does not meet construction standards and codes and is considered substandard. Colonias households are also of diverse nature and composition including single households, nuclear and extended families, as well as multiple households sharing lots. This wide variety of house forms and households in colonias fits poorly within the nuclear household, single family detached housing idealized by conventional low-income housing projects, programs and policies. As a result, colonias marginally benefit from the resources available to them and continue to depend mostly on the individual efforts of their inhabitants. This research identifies the housing diversity and the process of housing consolidation in colonias of the US-Mexico border by looking at the patterns of house form and household arrangements in colonias of South Texas. Ten colonias located to the east of the city of Laredo along Highway 359 in Webb County, Texas were selected based on their characteristics, data availability and accessibility. Data collected included periodic aerial images of the colonias spanning a period of 28 years, household information from the 2000 census disaggregated at the block level for these colonias, and information from a field survey and a semi structured interview made to a random sample of 123 households between February and June 2007. The survey collected information about house form and household characteristics. The survey also incorporated descriptive accounts on how households completed their house from the initial structure built or set on the lot until the current house form. Data was compiled and analyzed using simple statistical methods looking for identifiable patterns on house form and household characteristics and changes over time. Findings showed that housing in colonias is built and consolidated following identifiable patterns of successive changes to the house form. Findings also showed that households in colonias share characteristics that change over time in similar ways. These results suggest similarities of colonias with extra-legal settlements in other developing areas. Based on these findings, the study reflects on possible considerations that could improve the impact of projects, programs and policies directed to support colonias and improve colonias housing.

Member Perceptions of Informal Science Institutions Graduate Certificate Program: Case Study of a Community of Practice

Ball, Lois A. 01 January 2012 (has links)
Abstract This research attempted to understand the experiences of a cohort of informal and formal science educators and informal science institution (ISI) community representatives during and after completion of a pilot graduate certificate program. Informal science educators (ISEs) find limited opportunities for professional development and support which influence their contributions to America's science literacy and school science education. This emergent design nested case study described how an innovative program provided professional development and enabled growth in participants' abilities to contribute to science literacy. Data were collected through interviews, participant observations, and class artifacts. The program by design and constituency was the overarching entity that accounted for members' experiences. Three principal aspects of the ISI certificate program and cohort which influenced perceptions and reported positive outcomes were (1) the cohort's composition and their collaborative activities which established a vigorous community of practice and fostered community building, mentoring, and networking, (2) long term program design and implementation which promoted experiential learning in a generative classroom, and (3) ability of some members who were able to be independent or autonomous learners to embrace science education reform strategies for greater self-efficacy and career advancement. This research extends the limited literature base for professional development of informal science educators and may benefit informal science institutions, informal and formal science educators, science education reform efforts, and public education and science-technology-society understanding. The study may raise awareness of the need to establish more professional development opportunities for ISEs and to fund professional development. Further, recognizing and appreciating informal science educators as a diverse committed community of professionals who positively influence science education for everyone is essential.

Circumventing the state : illegal labour migration from Ukraine as a strategy within the informal economy

Patsyurko, Nataliya. January 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines labour migration as an outcome of the interaction between the state and the informal economy, by considering the trends of contemporary labour migration from Ukraine to Southern Europe. It contends that in both the sending and receiving countries, migration policies either disregard or severely limit labour migration, while their informal economies facilitate the development of migration. This basic contradiction sustains migration flows over time. The main argument of the thesis is that migration develops within the system of interacting informal economies. I demonstrate the embeddedness of migration in the informal economy by using the case of Ukrainian migration to Italy. / The role of the informal economy in the development of migration is examined across several dimensions. First, I argue that the recent labour migration from Ukraine emerged as a strategy of the informal economy, continuing the previous strategies of cross-border trading and short-term migration to Central Europe. These economic practices were the innovative responses of the population to the decline of the state economy and to the absence of economic reforms. Migration developed in the space between the state and the market economy. / Second, the flows of labour migration were 'invisible' to states, and developed outside state control and regulation. This thesis demonstrates that the migration policies of the Ukrainian state disregarded the process of out-migration of Ukrainian citizens. Similarly, Italian immigration policies did not recognise the existing flows of labour migration. The informal economy of the receiving state resolved the contradiction between the economic demand for migrant workers and restrictive migration policies and enabled access to the receiving economy. / However, access to the receiving labour market through the informal economy contributed to the disadvantaged incorporation of migrants and prevented their integration into the receiving society. The analysis of economic incorporation demonstrates that the informal economy channelled Ukrainian migrants to the secondary labour market with low earnings, a lack of benefits, and no possibility of professional advancement. The mode of access to the receiving economy and the resulting illegality heavily influenced the position of Ukrainian migrants in the labour market. / Finally, the analysis of Ukrainian labour migration to Italy demonstrates that alternative migration-facilitating institutions were developed in the absence of the state recognition of labour migration. These institutions paralleled the institutions of the official labour markets and allowed migrants to implement income-generating projects. In addition, migration was facilitated by the supporting institutions of the receiving society, which counteracted the restrictive immigration laws and political controls on migration. The migration-supporting institutions were predicated on the strategies of circumventing state control which developed from participation in the informal economy of the sending country. Labour migration from the former Soviet Union would not be possible without these informal practices and the culture of avoiding state control in economic activities. / The proposed analysis answers the challenge posed by the recent Ukrainian labour migration to conventional theories on migration, whose approaches usually omit references to the meso-level of migration processes, and consider either the structural-economic or the micro- determinants of migration. This thesis presents the informal economy both as a structural factor which enables migration and as a characteristic of the migrant agency that facilitates it. / By doing that, the thesis also complements the literature on migration to Southern Europe and argues that migrations are not simply encouraged by the informal economies of the receiving countries, but they emerge from, and are facilitated by, the informal economies of the sending countries. To perpetuate migration migrants creatively use the resources of the informal economy in conjunction with strategies of circumventing the state. This argument holds for a number of ex-Soviet countries, which suffered severe economic crises during the disintegration of the state-controlled socialist economies, and consequently produced significant labour migrations to Western Europe.

Regulation, Recycling and the Rise of Informality: Deposit Beverage Container Collection on the Halifax Peninsula

Atchison, David J 17 August 2012 (has links)
Why do some people in Halifax, Nova Scotia work collecting recyclables rather than in other—more formal—means of employment? Some scholars argue that informal economic activity is the product of a shift towards flexible work regimes and reductions to the social welfare system (the informalization thesis) and/or that increasingly marginalized people are forced into informal economic activities by economic necessity (the marginalization thesis). Drawing on a close analysis of provincial and municipal recycling policies and ethnographic fieldwork with informal recyclers, I argue that the informalization and marginalization theses are based on overly deterministic models of informal employment. Demand for informal recycling in Halifax is supported by a complex raft of environmental legislation designed to increase the rate of recycling. People willingly choose informal recycling as an alternative to formal employment for various reasons, but above all because it offers a tax-free, honest living, autonomy and a decent income.
