Generation Me: Millennial Intercultural Sensitivity and Conflict Management Styles in the Group Setting

Clements, Alyssa 01 May 2017 (has links)
The Millennial Generation is a young generation now required to effectively and efficiently navigate the cultural diversity that they encounter in various group settings throughout the United States. Research has examined conflict management styles and intercultural sensitivity, but few studies have investigated these two concepts specifically within the Millennial Generation. The purpose of this study is to fill the gap that exists in the current literature through an examination of the relationship between intercultural sensitivity and conflict management styles within the Millennial Generation in a hypothetical intercultural group setting. The results from 221 participants indicate that positive and negative relationships exist among the dimensions of intercultural sensitivity and conflict management styles, Millennials show a preference for conflict management styles that reflect a concern for self, and Millennials report high Interaction Confidence and low Respect for Cultural Difference. Limitations and directions for future research are also discussed.

Perna, Carlos Gabriel 25 September 2017 (has links)
In 1872 the Ranqueles signed a peace treaty with missionaries and military leaders on the frontier-post of the Pampa. This peace treaty will be the last document to regulate the relationship between the Ranqueles, indigenous peoples of Mapuche descent, and the “Christians” in the argentine Pampa until in 1879 argentine troops invade the territory and take possession of it. An analysis of letters and other written documents from this period shows, that in this environment of intercultural communication bilingual persons, lenguaraces, played a major part, even though their participation in the communicational process is not always noted. The lenguaraz had the task to interact between two cultures using his cultural, idiomatic and expressive knowledge. Eugenio Coseriu’s theory of surrounding fields is used here, to analyse how the participation of a translator, explicitly mentioned or omitted, has affected and found influence in the oral texts and written documents.

A França na música popular brasileira do século XX: visões e impressões de sambistas e chansonniers / the representation of French - its people, language and culture - in 20th century\' s Brazilian Popular Music : visions and impressions of samba composers and chansonniers

Nancy Aparecida Alves 07 March 2008 (has links)
This study, which fits into the environment of the intercultural relationships between Brazil and France, searches to analyze and discuss the representation of French - its people, language and culture - in Brazilian Popular Music. The objective is, therefore, to verify how humor, the presence of the French language and its cultural markers have contributed to a consolidated project of a national identity. Based on some Greimasian semiotic concepts and equally on the notions of dialogism and polyphonia exposed by Mikhail Bakhtin, the study intends to observe the organization of discourse, as well as to learn about the forces (modalizations) that propel the characters inside the song and how they develop whilst social players of a determined era, clarifying, whenever possible, the relationships between discourse (internal circuit) and socio-historical conditions of production and reception (external circuit). The hypothesis starts from the premise that, just like the Brazilian identity, the image of the Frenchman was also constructed. The research also includes a reference catalogue relative to the songs mentioned in the body of the work, and also a presentation on CD of the original phonograms (annexed).

Evaluating the effectiveness of a diversity training in an educational organization

Elliott, Bonnie Gail 01 January 2002 (has links)
Diversity training programs are increasingly being incorporated into organizations as a strategy to meet moral standards and legal challenges. Unfortunately, little research as been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of these programs. This study describes an effective diversity training program as one that changes a member of the organization's negative attitude about racial differences toward a positive attitude.

Etnicidad lingüística en la educación primaria de los niños indígenas del Perú desde 2000 hasta el 2015 / Linguistic ethnicity in primary education of indigenous children in Peru from 2000 to 2015

Garay Pacherre, Guadalupe del Rocío 03 July 2019 (has links)
The present work uses the Peruvian Young Lives International Study of Childhood Poverty’s School Level data to investigate the effect of the presence of different languages, except Spanish, on the cognitive knowledge of primary school children. It was found that the presence of a specific language, excepto the Spanish language, in primary education reduce at 2.22 points the score on cognitive tests. There is no evidence of this effect from the supply factors. These findings also suggest that education in languages different than Spanish at the primary level, for those children whose parents speak a language different than Spanish, it improves their cognitive results. / Trabajo de investigación

The effect on culture-bound evaluation by the Intercultural Communication Workshop (ICW) at Portland State University

Sørensen, Marion Franc 01 January 1984 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect on culture-bound evaluation by the Intercultural Communication Workshop (ICW) at Portland State University. An increase in positive evaluation of an intercultural dyad was taken to indicate a decrease in culture-bound evaluation. Methodology consisted of an adaptation of Dawes' "Direct Estimation Techniques" which was utilized in creating the testing instrument. The results are inconclusive but suggest that the ICW training may be more effective in this dimension for the American students than for International students.

Awareness of biculturalism in families of intercultural marriage

Vieira, Eleesabeth Carol-Therese 01 January 1989 (has links)
The overall purpose of this preliminary study is to generate more information in the area of intercultural marriage. The specific objectives of the study are to explore the extent to which families of intercultural marriage are aware of the issues of biculturalism that are discussed as significant in the literature; the extent to which partners of intercultural marriage discuss these issues with one another or with their children; the extent to which the family members' subjective reports of "awareness" are consistent.
