Johann Nepomuk DavidSchröder, Gesine 09 September 2016 (has links)

VIII. Anhang / As a painting technician, conservator-restorer, radiologist and university teacher, Kurt Wehlte is a seminal figure in the professional history in the field of conservation-restoration. His interdisciplinary way of working and thinking shaped a professional image of the restorer that still has an impact today. Based on Kurt Wehlte's scientific estate, in particular the so-called X-ray archive, the development of art-scientific radiography in the first half of the 20th century and Wehlte's part on it is described. The estate documents his activities as a radiologist between 1931 and 1963 based on around 600 X-radiographs, also a wide range of other technical images, like early UV-photographs and IR-photographs and numerous written sources.
Volume 1, divided into Kurt Wehlte's stations in life (Dresden, Berlin and Stuttgart), sheds light on his multifaceted work and shows how his activities in the field of art-scientific radiography are linked in terms of content. Particular his series of X-radiographs taken in German Museums for Alan Burroughs' Collection of X-radiographs at the Fogg Art Museum (today part of Harvard Art Museums), gained importance in the history of science. The same applies to his interdisciplinary research, in which he developed procedural innovations, gained new insights into the evaluation of X-radiographs of paintings, and definitively proved the harmlessness of the examination method.
Kurt Wehlte also owed his successful career to political opportunism. His cooperation with organizations and cultural authorities during the National Socialist era is also a testimony to German cultural and scientific history.
Volume 2 presents a newly developed working method for the systematic recording of art technological phenomena in X-radiographs, which can equally be used for the assessment of historical X-radiographs evaluations. Possibilities and limitations of systematic recording are discussed. This is based on case studies, which are thematically linked to the scientific historical part via X-radiographs of paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt van Rijn.:Vorwort

Linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black holeKubeka, Amos Soweto 17 February 2015 (has links)
We firstly numerically recalculate the Ricci tensor of non-stationary axisymmetric
space-times (originally calculated by Chandrasekhar) and we find some discrepancies
both in the linear and non-linear terms. However, these discrepancies do not affect
the results concerning linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole. Secondly,
we use these Ricci tensors to derive the Zerilli and Regge-Wheeler equations and use
the Newman-Penrose formalism to derive the Bardeen-Press equation. We show the
relation between these equations because they describe the same linear perturbations
of a Schwarzschild black hole. Thirdly, we illustrate heuristically (when the angular
momentum (l) is 2) the relation between the linearized solution of the Einstein vacuum
equations obtained from the Bondi-Sachs metric and the Zerilli equation, because
they describe the same linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole. Lastly, by
means of a coordinate transformation, we extend Chandrasekhar's results on linear
perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole to the Bondi-Sachs framework. / Mathematical Sciences / M. Sc. (Applied Mathematics)

Postmoderní pojetí děl KURTA VONNEGUTA / Postmodern Characteristics of KURT VONNEGUTAdamová, Kateřina January 2011 (has links)
This thesis analyzes narrative strategies of Kurt Vonnegut as a postmodern author with a specific style. The first part defines postmodernism as opposed to modernism and explains all essential notions to provide the theoretical background. This part also includes a biographical element, describing the important events of the author's life, as these had a major influence on his work. Second part of the thesis analyzes the narrative style of the two selected books, Breakfast of Champions and Mother Night. The conclusion summarizes the most important specifics of the author's narrative strategies and style in the given books. This thesis presents Kurt Vonnegut as a significant and influential representative of postmodern American literature of the second half of the 20th century. Vonnegut fully employs the narrative strategies typical for this period, and by experimenting he creates his own unique style.

Literature in the Age of Science: Technology and Scientists in the Mid-Twentieth Century Works of Isaac Asimov, John Barth, Arthur C. Clarke, Thomas Pynchon, and Kurt VonnegutSimes, Peter A. 08 1900 (has links)
This study explores the depictions of technology and scientists in the literature of five writers during the 1960s. Scientists and technology associated with nuclear, computer, and space science are examined, focusing on their respective treatments by the following writers: John Barth, Kurt Vonnegut, Thomas Pynchon, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke. Despite the close connections between the abovementioned sciences, space science is largely spared from negative critiques during the sixties. Through an analysis of Barth's Giles Goat-boy, Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, Asimov's short stories "Key Item," "The Last Question," "The Machine That Won the War," "My Son, the Physicist," and Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey, it is argued that altruistic goals of space science during the 1960s protect it from the satirical treatments that surround the other sciences.

A Critique of the Learning BrainOlsson, Joakim January 2020 (has links)
The guiding question for this essay is: who is the learner? The aim is to examine and criticize one answer to this question, sometimes referred to as the theory of the learning brain, which suggests that the explanation of human learning can be reduced to the transmitting and storing of information in the brain’s formal and representational architecture, i.e., that the brain is the learner. This essay will argue that this answer is misleading, because it cannot account for the way people strive to learn in an attempt to lead a good life as it misrepresents the intentional life of the mind, which results in its counting ourselves out of the picture when it attempts to provide a scientific theory of the learning process. To criticize the theory of the learning brain, this essay will investigate its philosophical foundation, a theory of mind called cognitivism, which is the basis for the cognitive sciences. Cognitivism is itself built on three main tenets: mentalism, the mind-brain identity theory and the computer analogy. Each of these tenets will be criticized in turn, before the essay turns to criticize the theory of the learning brain itself. The focus of this essay is, in other words, mainly negative. The hope is that this criticism will lay the groundwork for an alternative view of mind, one that is better equipped to give meaningful answers to the important questions we have about what it means to learn, i.e., what we learn, how we do it and why. This alternative will emphasize the holistic and intentional character of the human mind, and consider the learning process as an intentional activity performed, not by isolated brains, but by people with minds that are extended, embodied, enacted and embedded in a sociocultural and physical context.

Between accommodation, affinity and resistance : a historical investigation of German faith missions during the period of National SocialismSpohn, Elmar, 1967- 10 1900 (has links)
The subject of this study is a historical examination of the German faith-missions (in
contemporary terms: evangelical missions) during the period of National Socialism. This
topic has been neglected in scholarly research to date. This study describes how these mission
agencies acted in the context of the unlawful regime of National Socialism. Due to a
problematic source basis, the attitude the faith missions took towards the ursupation of power
by Hitler is demonstrated based on their own periodical publications. It emerges that they
largely positioned themselves at a distance to National Socialism, racism and anti-semitism.
However these publications also demonstrate a distance to the “Confessing Church”. In the
main body the examination of eight exemplary biographies based on detailed sources portrays
an array of different positions which range from affinity to the NS-system to persecution.
Furthermore the study shows that the issue of failure or guilt hardly played any role in the
postwar period. This study leads to the conclusion the political ethics of the German faith
missions were only rudimentarily developed, and only evinced themselves in an obedience to
the powers that be and in a basically apolitical attitude. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D. Th. (Missiology)
