Written by Latino Orsini (1517-1586), artisan and inventor of the instrument, the work was commented by Egnatio Danti (1526-1586), erudite and contemporary of Orsini, fact that indicates the approach between the practical knowledge and the scholarly knowledge, one of the particulars of the Renaissance. In the origin of this approach, it is possible to find a new way of looking for the work, conducted by the needs of the bourgeoise, class on the rise this period. It is, therefore, which the object investigated was a measure instrument called Radio Latino. This work has had as goal contributing with the studies about Mathematics History, discussing possible articulations with the teaching of the subject. The research guided up on the works developed by Saito e Dias that discuss the interfaces between the Mathematics History and the teaching of mathematics from the study of the treatise which describes the construction and use of measure instruments. The translation of the Trattato, the reconstruction of the instrument, the simulation of the construction and use, and also the reading of the works that lecture on the historical context of the Renaissance, constituted the methodological procedures of the research and enabled the elaboration of two didactical activities related to teaching of mathematics. Through these activities, we noted that the study of the instrument could promote the articulations between the Mathematics History and the teaching of mathematics / Este trabalho foi desenvolvido a partir do estudo do Trattato del Radio Latino, obra publicada em Roma no século XVI, que traz informações sobre a construção e uso de um instrumento de medida.

Sets up a new social structure of the Information Age, a company set up by production networks, power and experiences that build the virtual culture in global flows and that transcend time and space. Incarnated in this context, the Church in light of the Aparecida document is called to rethink deeply and relaunch with fidelity and courage its mission in the new circumstances Latin American and global. It is important to detect dynamics that run through and condition the Church's presence in the city. The pastoral action must be an expression of an understanding of the faith and the Church in the pluralistic and diverse context of today's reality, where the bulk of the city is to organize a genuine dialogue among all social categories. In this dialogue all can claim to force their participation in the city and reach higher levels of commitment, in order to overcome the challenges arising from structures that limit the actions and superficializam relations / A cidade se converteu no lugar próprio das novas culturas, cenário no qual são geradas e se impõem uma nova linguagem e uma nova simbologia.

Almeida, Adriano Pires de January 2016 (has links)

Ethnic Variables and Negative Life Events as Predictors of Depressive Symptoms and Suicidal Behaviors in Latino College Students: On the Centrality of Receptivo a los Demás

Chang, Edward C., Yu, Elizabeth. A., Yu, Tina, Kahle, Emma R., Hernandez, Viviana, Kim, Jean M., Jeglic, Elizabeth L., Hirsch, Jameson K. 01 May 2016 (has links)
In the present study, we examined ethnic variables (viz., multigroup ethnic identity and other group orientation) along with negative life events as predictors of depressive symptoms and suicidal behaviors in a sample of 156 (38 male and 118 female) Latino college students. Results of conducting hierarchical regression analyses indicated that the set of ethnic variables accounted for significant variance in both depressive symptoms and suicidal behaviors. The inclusion of negative life events was found to account for significant additional variance in both outcomes, beyond what was accounted for by ethnic variables. Interestingly, beyond main effects, results indicated a significant Other Group Orientation × Negative Life Events interaction effect to account for additional variance in depressive symptoms and suicidal behaviors. Some implications of the present findings are discussed, including the potential value for Latinos to broaden their attitudes and interactions with other ethnic groups.

Marketing Strategies for Increasing Latino Enrollment in Higher Education

Gomez de la Fuente, Melissa Rocio 01 January 2016 (has links)
Many leaders of higher education institutions in the United States face changes in student demographics, tightened regulatory environments, and reduced state funding. University leaders have an opportunity to leverage targeted marketing strategies in order to increase their institutions' market share in the Latino student segment. The purpose of this study was to explore the strategies that some university leaders use to increase Latino student enrollment in higher education programs. The marketing mix and the Ps of marketing theory comprised the study's conceptual framework. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 3 marketing experts from the higher education sector, who were selected by purposive sampling. Data were audio recorded, transcribed, member checked, and then coded for themes. Emergent themes describe the elements to consider when implementing a comprehensive strategic marketing plan, the challenges marketers face when trying to increase Latino student enrollment, and the importance of selecting and engaging stakeholders during the recruiting process. Marketing managers and practitioners in higher education, organizational strategy leaders, and policy makers may use these findings to understand the needs of Latino students, which may contribute to the growth of Latino student enrollment and the financial viability of the institution. Implications for positive social change include increased educational attainment for Latinos and related impacts for students' communities and society.

La Jaula De Oro Y Dreamers: Wellness Of Latinx Undocumented College Students In A Divisive Political Climate And #45 Era Presidency

Childs, Sarah Maria 01 January 2018 (has links)
Undocumented, unafraid, and unapologetic is how our students should be able to communicate to us; yet this is not the reality for many. There are an estimated 65,000 undocumented students who graduate from high schools every year in the United States, and another 7,000 to 13,000 enrolled in colleges and universities. As of September 2017, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has granted about 800,000 individuals deferment from deportation. DREAMers are those brought to this country, are out of status, and likely also qualify for the DREAM Act if it were passed. Many undocumented students in general are prone to experiencing stress that exists as a result of their immigration status. Fear and concerns about physical safety cause many students to keep their status a secret from peers, school personnel, and even close friends. Their fears are rooted in a system that separates families, imprisons migrants without due process, and incites violence against those who are undocumented or are perceived to be, in this country. Thus, navigating life in the shadows for them is understandable; but doing so also comes with real consequences, negatively impacting them academically, socially, and psychologically. The purpose of this study is to seek to understand the experiences of Latinx undocumented college students in the current political climate and under the current administration in terms of how their student experiences and overall wellness as Latinx undocumented students are being impacted. The study was guided by several questions: a) How do Latinx undocumented students talk about their experiences on the college campus? b) How do Latinx undocumented students perceive how the institution responds to issues they face due to their undocumented status? c) What incidents in particular have most impacted them as college students? And, d) How do students describe their own sense of efficacy and self-care as they navigate college within this current climate? Through the lens of Latino/a Critical Race Theory and semi-structured interviews with college students in New England and California, coupled with reflections from field experiences, analysis of multiple forms of data, and the researcher’s personal connections to immigration via family history—findings of this study illuminate the lived experiences, challenges, and trauma faced by these students within the ongoing political divisiveness around matters of immigration. It is important that we as higher education and student affairs personnel understand the lived experiences of these students so that we can more compassionately and competently serve the community while also enabling their success and wellness. It is intended that the findings from this study will illuminate the experiences of undocumented students and provide new ways to support and guide these students.

Latino College Student Athletes As Nepantleras: Fostering Academic Success And Athletic Identity At Two Ncaa Division Ii Institutions

Vega, Carlos Enrique 01 January 2019 (has links)
Collegiate athletic programs at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II institutions in the United States serve a two-fold purpose. They offer aspiring student athletes access to college and opportunities to play competitive college sports. Consequently, student athletes at Division II institutions experience personal and institutional pressures to compete for championships while achieving academic success. Increasing demands on today’s college student athletes’ athletic participation and performance has a multitude of consequences that could influence their academic performance and success in college. Simultaneously, these institutions and athletic programs are also witnessing another phenomenon – a transformation in their student population. Latino college student athlete matriculation continues to increase every year, mirroring their non-student athlete counterparts in higher education. Their increased enrollment on these college campuses necessitates higher education researchers to better understand this understudied population. In furthering that endeavor, this inquiry sought to illuminate an overarching research question: how does a Latino college athlete’s racial identity influence their academic success and athletic performance? Guided by Gloria Anzaldúa’s Theory of Borderlands (Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, 2012), this two-part qualitative study invited seven Latino college student athletes’ to examine their racial-ethnic identity, their academic success, and their athletic participation in Division II competitive sports. Through 12 semi-structured open-ended interviews, the researcher examined the intersections between Latino student athletes’ motivation to do well in their respective sport and their motivation to perform well academically. Among the major findings of this study, participants strongly identified themselves as Nepantleras – border crossers who possessed an intrinsic ability to seamlessly cross the world of academics and the world of athletics. Their movement across these dual world realities, in addition to balancing the expectations of their Latino familias y culturas, resulted in the participants rejecting the idea of one or the other (student or athlete) and claiming a singular identity: Soy Estudiante Deportista. Understanding and engaging with Latino college student athletes’ academic and athletic experiences at Division II institutions is vital for college faculty, athletic directors, coaches, student affairs professionals, and institutional administrators invested in their success. This study offers these institutional agents recommendations to best support their student athletes.

Junior High Latino Parents' Perceived Roles in Home and School Partnerships

Rodriguez-Kufner, Mytzy Vania 01 January 2016 (has links)
A rural K-12 district in the Midwest evidenced a rise in the Latino population from 2002 to 2013, yet parental participation amongst Latino parents at the junior high was low. Low parental involvement has been linked to lowered self-efficacy, which impacts student learning. Although there is a plethora of research on the positive aspects of parental involvement, there is little research on Latino parent involvement in small rural communities. Within this instrumental case study, Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler's model of parent involvement was used to explore Latino parents' perceptions of their roles and responsibilities of communication strategies within the junior high and of available resources related to parental role construction and self-efficacy. Ten Latino parents with children in Grades 7 and 8 were individually interviewed. Document analysis of school documents and researcher notes were used to bolster the trustworthiness of interpretations. Typological analysis was incorporated to look at transcribed and coded notes where 4 main findings emerged: lack of communication, helping the adolescent child, understanding school structure/governance, and learning the English language. A curriculum design plan was developed in 3 areas supporting parent self-efficacy and role construction: understanding adolescents, understanding school structure/governance, and English as a second language (ESL) approach. This study may promote social change within a rural community because the implemented curriculum design plan established Latino parental engagement by incorporating a series of workshops in Spanish and an ESL format to meet the 4 categories which help to meet state and federal education guidelines within the area of parent and family engagement.

Le Masne, Camille 30 November 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Substance Abuse, Intimate Partner Violence and Risk for HIV among a Community Sample of Hispanic Women

Gonzalez-Guarda, Rosa Maria 20 April 2008 (has links)
Among the health disparities affecting the U.S. Hispanic population today are those relating to risky behaviors such as substance abuse, intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV/AIDS. However, few studies have examined how these conditions may impact this population. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the experiences that Hispanic women in South Florida have with regard to substance abuse, IPV and risks for HIV/AIDS, to describe how these conditions may be related, and to develop a model that can be used to guide research and interventions targeting this population. This dissertation uses data collected in Project DYVA (Drogas y Violencia en las Americas- Drugs and Violence in the Americas), a pilot research study that utilized both qualitative (Phase I) and quantitative (Phase II) research methods to describe the experiences of Hispanic women in South Florida between the ages of 18 and 60 with regard to substance abuse, violence and risky sexual behaviors. Three studies were conducted as part of this dissertation. The first study utilizes data collected during the qualitative phase of Project DYVA. During this phase eight focus groups were conducted and analyzed using qualitative content analysis (N = 81). The second and third studies utilize data collected during the second phase of Project DYVA. In this phase cross-sectional questionnaires collecting information regarding demographics, acculturation, self-esteem, depression, substance abuse, IPV and risks for HIV, were administered to 82 Hispanic women. Univariate and multivariate statistics were used to explore the relationships between substance abuse, IPV and risk for HIV (study 2) and between resource availability, IPV and depression (study 3). The findings from this dissertation suggest that substance abuse, IPV and risk for HIV are closely related intersecting health issues. IPV, the condition that emerged as the most salient of the three, also appears to be closely associated with resource availability (i.e., self-esteem and income) and depression. Additional individual, cultural, relationship and socio-environmental factors that may play a significant role in shaping the experiences that Hispanic women have with regards to these intersecting conditions were also identified and organized into a model.
