Underdevelopment : A case-study of Nigeria

Mudei Hassan, Mohamed January 2022 (has links)
Underdevelopment has plagued Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), since independence the post-colonial African states have experienced extreme poverty, unemployment, and other economic ailments that have persisted in the region. The aim of this thesis is to critique the null hypothesis of dependency theorists that it is structural factors that cause underdevelopment instead this study proposes an alternative hypothesis through Neo-Classical Realism to explain that it is in fact state-level actors and domestic issues that are the true culprit of causing the dependent variable. The methodological approach is a single embedded case-study with an explaining-outcome process-tracing. The thesis found that the cause of the underdevelopment in Nigeria is firmly rooted in the domestic sphere and that it delves much deeper than the main factors; resource dependence, lax institutions, prebendalism, and Sino-Nigerian relations, but it is the socio-political culture that has produced the norms which the elites operate on and possibly contributing to the exasperation of the negative aspects of the main factors that have perpetuated and sustained underdevelopment in Nigeria and SSA.

St-Cyr, Amik 02 1900 (has links)

Bubble curtains with vertical tubes : A way to deter fish from hydro power intakes

Molin, Gustav January 2019 (has links)
This project was performed on assigment of Vattenfall R&D in Älvkarleby. The project was a first step in evaluating whether bubble curtains with vertical tubes could be suitable for diverting fish from hydro power intakes into fish passages. To determine this, prototypes were constructed, where one was tested in still water and one in running water. The tests in still water were carried out in a large cylindrical tank and the tests in running water were carried out in Kungsr¨annan in ¨Alvkarleby. A number of test variables were developed to be able to vary the tests. These test variables were hole size, number of holes, tube center-to-center distance, air flow and water velocity. The tests were carried out without fish, but a number of indicators were developed to be able to compare and evaluate the tests. For the tests in still water, these indicators were the width of the bubble curtain created by a single tube and the horizontal movement of the air bubbles, to determine whether the hydrostatic pressure from the surrounding water had any effect on the appearance of the bubble curtain. For the tests in running water, the indicators were the bubble curtain density, the curvature of the tubes and the movement of the tubes. All experiments were documented using cameras and the results were then obtained through image processing in the software MATLAB. The results showed that the width of the bubble curtain created by a single tube varied between 12 and 34 cm for pressures between 0.5 and 2.0 bar. It was concluded that the hydrostatic pressure was of minimal significance for the appearance of the bubble curtain, at least for depths up to 1.95 m. For the tests in running water, the air flow rate and tube center-to-center distance was of the greatest importance for the bubble curtain density. The curvature of the tubes were most affected by the size of the holes and the movement of the tubes were most affected by the number of holes.

A Collage-Based Approach to Inverse Problems for Nonlinear Systems of Partial Differential Equations

Levere, Kimberly Mary 30 March 2012 (has links)
Inverse problems occur in a wide variety of applications and are an active area of research in many disciplines. We consider inverse problems for a broad class of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). We develop collage-based approaches for solving inverse problems for nonlinear PDEs of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic type. The original collage method for solving inverse problems was developed in [29] with broad application, in particular to ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Using a consequence of Banach’s fixed point theorem, the collage theorem, one can bound the approximation error above by the so-called collage distance, which is more readily minimizable. By minimizing the collage distance the approximation error can be controlled. In the case of nonlinear PDEs we consider the weak formulation of the PDE and make use of the nonlinear Lax-Milgram representation theorem and Galerkin approximation theory in order to develop a similar upper-bound on the approximation error. Supporting background theory, including weak solution theory,is presented and example problems are solved for each type of PDE to showcase the methods in practice. Numerical techniques and considerations are discussed and results are presented. To demonstrate the practical applicability of this work, we study two real-world applications. First, we investigate a model for the migration of three fish species through floodplain waters. A development of the mathematical model is presented and a collage-based method is applied to this model to recover the diffusion parameters. Theoretical and numerical particulars are discussed and results are presented. Finally, we investigate a model for the “Gao beam”, a nonlinear beam model that incorporates the possibility of buckling. The mathematical model is developed and the weak formulation is discussed. An inverse problem that seeks the flexural rigidity of the beam is solved and results are presented. Finally, we discuss avenues of future research arising from this work. / Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Department of Mathematics & Statistics

Pocovnicu, Oana 29 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)

"Fallbacks" - betydelsen av vandringstid för Atlantlax (Salmo salar L.) som faller nedströms vandringshinder / "Fallbacks" - the importance of migration time for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) that fall downstream of migration barriers

Larsson, Pia January 2013 (has links)
In Lake Vänern, Sweden, there is an endemic population of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) that lives its entire life in fresh water. The salmon is hindered from migrating to its natural spawning sites in the northern part of the River Klarälven by nine hydro-electric power plants. None of the hydro-electric power plants have fishways so that salmon migrating upstream or downstream may pass. In the current situation, the upward migrating salmon are caught in a fish trap at the most downstream located power plant in Forshaga. From there, the salmon are driven in a truck, past eight power plants and released a few kilometers upstream of the eighth power plant at Edsforsen. This study investigated the difference in the proportion of fallbacks between early (June-July) and late (August-September) migrating salmons in 2011-2013. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the proportion of fallbacks between the early and the late-migrating salmon. Fifty-one percent of the early salmon and 13% of the late salmon fell back during these 3 years. Further, there was no significant difference between males and females that became fallbacks. Nor was there any difference in the length of early and late-migrating salmon or fallbacks and non-fallbacks.

Numerical Simulation of a High-speed Jet Injected in a Uniform Supersonic Crossflow Using Adaptively Redistributed Grids

Seshadrinathan, Varun January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Minimizing numerical dissipation without compromising the robust shock-capturing attributes remains an outstanding challenge in the design of numerical methods for high-speed compressible flows. The conflicting requirements of low and high numerical dissipation for accurate resolution of discontinuous and smooth flow features, respectively, are the principal reason behind this challenge. In this work we pursue a recently proposed novel strategy of combining adaptive mesh redistribution with conservative high-order shock-capturing finite-volume discretization methodology to overcome this challenge. In essence, we perform high-order finite-volume WENO (weighted essentially non oscillatory) reconstruction on a continuously moving grid the nodes of which are repositioned adaptively in such a way that maximum spatial resolution is achieved in regions associated with sharpest flow gradients. Moreover, to reduce computational expense, the finite-volume WENO discretization strategy is combined with the midpoint quadrature so that only one reconstruction along each intercool location is necessary. To estimate a monotone upwind flux, a rotated HLLC (Harten-Lax-vanLeer-contact resolving) Riemann solver is employed at each intercool location with the state variables estimated from the high-order WENO reconstruction procedure. The effectiveness of this adaptive high-order discretization methodology is assessed on the well-known double Mach reflection test case for reconstruction orders ranging from five to eleven. We find that the resolution of the intricate flow features such as the wall-jet improves progressively with the reconstruction order, which is indicative of the reduced dissipation level of the adaptive high-order WENO discretization. The adaptive discretization methodology is applied to simulate a flow configuration consisting of a Mach 3 supersonic jet injected in a Mach 2 supersonic crossflow of similar ideal gas. It is found that the flow characteristics and especially features that are formed as a result of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability are strongly influenced by the reconstruction order. The influence of the jet inclination angle on the overall flow features is analyzed.

Early environmental effects on dominance in juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) / Tidiga miljöeffekters påverkan på dominans hos juvenil lax (Salmo salar L.)

Leksell, Lina January 2017 (has links)
The earth’s climate is rapidly changing. With climate change currently altering the environment, water temperature is an important environmental factor that will have various effects on fishes since they are ectotherms. As the changes are expected to be greatest during winter, when salmonid fishes incubate their eggs, one might expect substantial effects on egg development. In this experiment pairs of fish, matched by length, were compared. For each pair, one fish had experienced ambient cold temperatures (cold treatment) during embryogenesis and the other elevated temperatures (warm treatment, ca. 4-5 oC). The fish were tested in stream. Aggressive interactions were recorded and dominance was determined by scoring each fish’s position relative to where food was delivered from and the amount of food taken. Salmon from the cold treatment had a strong tendency to have a higher dominance score than salmon from the warm treatment. The individual with the highest dominance score was not consistently larger or smaller than the individual with the lower dominance score. The results support the hypothesis that salmonids exposed to a cold environment during embryogenesis will be more dominant. Due to climate change, it is expected that water temperature will continue to rise in the future, which in turn will alter the fish’s behaviour. Fisken testades i strömakvarie.

Hansson Järnving, Rebecca January 2021 (has links)
During autumn, the endemic Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) migrate upstream to spawn in the river Klarälven, Sweden, after which they migrate downstream back to Lake Vänern. There are plans to remove one of the power houses in Deje, and replace it with a new power house, and before that happens it is important to study the downstream passage conditions at the site. As all power plants in Klarälven lack fish passage solutions, it is important to follow up the salmon passage survival during the migration. The purpose of this study was therefore to study how downstream migrating salmon negotiate the power plant, the route-specific passage survival and what factors that could affect their passage success. In September 2020, 40 upstream migrating salmon individuals were caught, measured and tagged after which they were transported and released below the power plant in Munkfors. Their downstream migration past Dejefors power plant was studied and analyzed using acoustic telemetry. The results showed that there was no significant difference between sexes in regards of downstream migration timing. However, the power plant turned out to delay downstream migrating salmon as it took longer time for them to pass the power plant than it took them to swim down the free-flowing part of the river. Of the 31 salmon that arrived in Deje, 27 passed the power plant, of which 13 individuals survived (48%). The survival rate was higher for individuals passing via spillways (10 of 12) than turbines (3 of 15). There was a significant difference in mortality rate at power plant passage depending on the length and passage route of the salmon. Large individuals suffered a higher mortality (11 of 15) than short (3 of 12) and a larger proportion of the salmon died when passing through the turbines than through spill gates. Based on the results, there was a clear need for improved survival rates for salmon passing the Dejefors power plant. The design of the turbines could be changed for increased survival, but at the same time other solutions that will make it possible for fish to avoid the turbines and instead choose another passageway would probably be a better and more efficient solution to increase the survival of the salmon during their downstream migration.
