Interaction in mathematics classes: a study about constitutive aspects of interactive processes and it\'s learning implications.

Fanizzi, Sueli 18 March 2008 (has links)
Research over the last two decades on Mathematical Education has demonstrated the importance of communication and interaction inside classrooms. Such research points to the creation of an environment where students are able to exchange points of view, confront resolutions, and present arguments as a favorable strategy in the learning process. Analyzing the components present in interactive relationships inside classrooms, between teacher and student and among students themselves and its possible implications in learning Mathematics, was the main objective of this research paper. Such analysis was reached through qualitative research of the interpretative approach. Initially a bibliographic research was made on the following themes: language, communication and interaction related to the areas of Linguistic and Mathematical Education. Subsequently, an intervention was carried out on third graders in a municipal school in the city of São Paulo who presented an insufficient Mathematical performance. Through the analysis of the transcripts of the talks during the moments of interactions, recorded in audio throughout a project of ten mathematics workshop classes and which was lectured by the researcher, the following conclusion was reached. It was actually possible to identify in the oral manifestations, beyond the content directly related to the Mathematical knowledge, affectionate, social and cultural components. Silence, although not considered an oral manifestation was also analyzed as a form of expression in the classroom context. Even though the research was developed with previously screened students, from the application of a diagnostic instrument so that the group was educationally homogeneous, it was verified that the diversity of situations in the interactive process may influence or not the learning process of students. It was concluded that the oral expression in Mathematics classes is not always related to the direct development of the logic reasoning over the concepts and ideas of Mathematics, since the expression is composed of an emotional, social and cultural nature and that it often foregoes the mathematical discussion in and of itself or overlaps it. Nevertheless, the expression of non-Mathematical contents shall be valued in classrooms as it may stand for a preparation of a discussion of Mathematical ideas.

We attempted to investigate normative children with learning difficulties in reading, proposing music therapeutic actions as mediation to expand the understanding of these cases. The field research, a case study of qualitative approach, was developed in an elementary public school in the city of Goiania, through which data were collected in many ways: music therapeutic visits to the learners, semi-structured interviews with teachers, student's family and the school context observations. The analysis was performed using data triangulation, establishing three periods (Beginner, Intermediate and Final) considering the musical sound expressions and the inter-and intrapersonal relationship aspects of these students and the perceptions aspects of the other actors (teachers and family members), and data on the dynamics of the school, generating analytical categories. The theoretical framework that subsidized this analysis was the Complexity Theory in dialogue with theoretical references of the music therapy, education and socio-historical psychology. The results of research showed that the homogeneity characteristic of the teaching/traditional school can lead to noncompliance of the students in situations of free expression and/or creative character, tending to the manifestation of misconduct and disorder. We understand, according to the complexity, that the disorder is a necessary phenomenon and concomitant to the order, since you need to learn to build, rebuild and/or deconstruct ideas, experiences and values. Music therapy in the school allowed a space for expression of the relations and intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts of learners. We believe that, to provide significant new experiences the subject (and do experiment) therapeutic musicians from experience, it is possible to facilitate to internalization of new knowledge and, consequently, the development. Complexity theory has enabled the contextualization of learning disabilities in reading favoring the understanding of the multiple factors that are mutual.

Elever i koncentrationssvårigheter : En kvalitativ studie om läsinlärning hos elever som be- döms vara i koncentrationssvårigheter / Pupils in concentration difficulties : qualitative study on reading learning among pupils who are considered to be in concentration difficulties

Hanell, Gabriella January 2019 (has links)
In the teacher education, there has been the opportunity to adopt different approaches to how classroom teaching is planned and structured. This has, for me, developed a strong interest to investigate further how students in concentration difficulties are handled in classrooms. However, in the area of concentration difficulties and reading learning, research is scarce. Thus, the area is in need of further research. The purpose of this study is to investigate how teachers in the earlier years of the school describe reading learning among pupils who are considered to be in concentration difficulties. This was done through semi-structured interviews with six teachers from three different schools and the data was analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. The result shows that the teachers who were interviewed have a consistent view of pupils in concentration difficulties. The teachers believe that the teaching should be structured and well planned, but also that the teaching should vary within what is familiar to the pupils. The opportunities to divide the group of pupils and the fact that more teachers work together are seen as very positive. Adapting the level of texts that pupils encounter, though, is considered a challenge. The study shows that concentration difficulties affect reading learning partially, but that oth- er factors also affect reading learning.

A study of Chinese learning difficulties and coping strategies for foreign students in Taiwan

Unknown Date (has links)
Few studies, however, were conducted to explore the actual learning conditions facing foreign students in Taiwan. That is, the influence of foreign students’ learning difficulties from all foreign language environments should not be underestimated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand foreign students of Chinese learning difficulties and their coping strategies influenced by external and internal reasons and to compare the individual student differences of learning motivation and goals, language learning backgrounds of different countries via semi-structure interviews. This study concludes with recommendations for future research. To accomplish the purpose of the study, this research adopted qualitative research methods through interviewing five foreign students who had learned Chinese in Taiwan more than one year. The interview outline was developed based on “Chinese learning difficulties and coping strategies for foreign students in Taiwan.” The conclusions of the study are as follows: 1.Among the reasons for Chinese learning difficulties facing the interviewed foreign students in Taiwan, the external reason mentioned by the participants outnumber the internal reason and the reason of Chinese learning difficulties; 2.The main reason of Chinese learning difficulties for the foreign students in Taiwan include lack of practicality, problem of word order between their first language and Chinese and the difficult Chinese tone; 3.The salient Chinese learning difficulties facing the foreign students include their dissatisfaction with practice activities in class, difficulty in understanding the local dialect Taiwanese and insufficient Chinese proficiency for continuing their study or work in Taiwan; 4.The coping strategies used by the foreign students who faced Chinese learning difficulties are mostly behavior-related, and the most frequently used strategy is “seeking solution actively”. 5.The attitude of the interviewed foreign students is generally positive. As of the coping strategies of learning difficulties of CSL, most foreign students made no response; 6.Since the foreign students in Taiwan come from different countries with various language learning backgrounds and learning motivations and goals, the Chinese teaching style in Taiwan may generate different aspects of learning difficulties and coping strategies. Based on the conclusions in this study, several recommendations are made: 1.Suggestions for relevant institutions of Chinese teaching include: (1) Enhancing the condition of teaching knowledge and ability when employing Chinese teacher, reducing the emphasis on pronunciation; (2) Establishing the advancement scheme for CSL teachers and opening workshops of multiculturalism (3) Recruiting volunteers or interns who wish to be Chinese teachers who can assist the language center after school or who can conduct Chinese courses according to their expertise; (4) Considering the educational backgrounds and learning goals of the foreign students to arrange appropriate proficiency-level courses; (5) Implementing teacher evaluation survey and providing an opportunity for students with learning difficulties to express their concern about teaching. 2. Suggestions for Chinese language teachers include: (1) Enhancing the practicality of the CSL content; (2) Observing or absorbing senior CSL teachers’ teaching experiences, heeding individual differences of foreign students with varied language proficiencies to teach according to their proficiencies; (3) Capitalizing on social and multimedia resources to help foreign students enhance their knowledge of Chinese culture. 3. Suggestions for Chinese language teaching policy include: (1) Implementing a more rigid Chinese teaching policy and gathering Chinese teachers with different orientations of teaching; (2) Establishing diversified Chinese teaching evaluation system; 4. Skolsköterskors erfarenheter av skolsituationen för elever med Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)diagnos / The school nurses´ experiences of the school situation for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) diagnosis

Palmér, Helene, Skhirtladze Segerpalm, Linda January 2011 (has links)
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is today the most common psychiatricdiagnosis among children. The purpose of this study was to describe school nurses̛experiences of the school situation of pupils with ADHD. Four to six percent of all schoolpupils have been diagnosed with this illness. Due to her daily contact with school children, the school nurse has the opportunity to assist in early detection of ADHD, and can to someextent even prevent the development of possible complications. Genetic predisposition is theprimary cause of ADHD but social factors affect the severity of its development. The methodin this study was qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach described byLundman och Hällgren Graneheim. The data collection was made through interviews with sixschool nurses. Based on the analysis, the theme; Expected to be like the others, but also notbeing able, emerged with three subthemes. The results can be used to increase theunderstanding of pupils with ADHD in their school situation. Hopefully, awareness of theproblem severity increases motivation to improve the situation in schools for all studentsand adults. There are many things that affect the situation for children with ADHD. With theright resources and conditions the opportunity to influence students' development in apositive direction occurs.

Seven students with learning disabilities enrolled in the second year of elementary school participated in the study. They were divided into two experimental conditions. On Condition 1, participants were exposed to Module 1 of a computerized reading and writing program, and on Condition 2, participants were exposed to the same computerized program concomitant with the phonological awareness program. Before (pre-test), during (intermediate test) and after the experimental training phase (post-test) the following tests were administered with participants of both conditions: Phonological Consciousness Test (by oral production - PCF), Phonological Awareness with Figures and Reading and Writing Diagnostics (DLE). Results show that four participants in Condition 1 completed the program within 21 to 23 sessions and the three participants in Condition 2 completed the teaching phases within 19 to 29 sessions. Concerning the phonological awareness program, participants on Condition 2 required more repetition of rhyme and alliteration activities than syllabic and phonemic activities. Results obtained from the evaluations indicate that participants of both conditions showed intermediate performance in rhyme and alliteration skills, high marks in syllabic skills and null performance in phonemic skills. In the post-test, improvement was observed for rhyme and alliteration, and syllabic skills. Participants did not consistently present improvement in phonemic skills in probes and post-tests. Regarding the reading and writing repertoire, results indicate that the participants of both conditions presented improvement in the relations evaluated at final test. The results suggest the need to improve teaching procedures for the development of phonological awareness skills.

A case study, with specific reference to the role of parents, in the teaching and learning of a residential special school for children with autism

Hubbard, Robert Graham January 2015 (has links)
Context: The purpose of this research was to examine if the educational approach (the Approach) adopted at Kilnbarn Residential Special School (the School) secured the developmental learning pathways for its pupils. All pupils were diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and many had single or multiple comorbid conditions. The research sought to understand how their parents could be substantive partners and co-creators in the design, modification, and implementation of the Approach. It was a unique feature of Kilnbarn’s Approach to fulfil the potential of parents to be co-creators and co-therapists in their child’s progress. Objective: The case study became one of the instruments in which to test the School’s effectiveness in meeting the needs of its pupils. It enabled a review of the School’s methodology, curriculum and organisational practices. The Approach was designed to provide secure developmental learning pathways for its pupils, improving their quality of life and independence. Method: The case study design, was chosen as it was considered the most appropriate research model. A Parents’ Questionnaire, distributed annually over 3 consecutive years (2004-6) was the evidential basis for this study. Interviews and collected data were used to analyse and evaluate the progress of the School through parents’ eyes. Results: The combination of parents working with professionals to maximise the culture of “technical eclecticism” seems to be, in the light of this case study, best suited to the needs of children diagnosed with autism, SLD and comorbid conditions. The child should be immersed in a consistent approach across all areas of their life. Improvements in well-being, communication and joint action routines, sleep balance, a healthy diet, physical exercise, incontinence and behaviours was observed. Conclusion The study identified that parents could be substantive partners and influencers in the design and modification of the Kilnbarn Approach. The Approach secured developmental learning pathways for its pupils and appeared to improve their quality of life. Parents as co-creators and co-therapists had regained ownership of their child’s quality of life, learning outcomes and personal development. From the experience and unique evidence of this case study schools should utilise and profit from the mass resource of their parents. It has been shown that the Kilnbarn Approach was, during the research, an effective and suitable intervention for the many children it served. It is hoped that further studies in this field will explore the concept of a “technical eclectic” approach that further validates and brings together interventions that are conceptually grounded and incorporates evidence-based focused intervention practices.

The self-perception of adolescents with learning difficulties

Claassens, Talita 30 November 2007 (has links)
Although previous research has been done on adolescents with learning difficulties or barriers to learning such as dyslexia and ADHD, no research has been done in South Africa on their self-perceptions of these difficulties. A phenomenological study was conducted through means of semi-structured, individual, face-to-face interviews. Self-perceptions that adolescents with dyslexia and ADHD form were explored. Selfperceptions are formed through comparisons with other learners and friends. Self-perceptions were left as an open-term in order to investigate the adolescents' own idiosyncratic interpretations of dyslexia and ADHD. From the interviews themes could be identified concerning their understanding of dyslexia and ADHD, feelings and cognitions associated with dyslexia and ADHD, the importance that significant others such as educators, parents and friends play, as well as the adolescents' way of coping with dyslexia and ADHD. Selfperceptions were both negative and positive and found to be influenced by factors such as age, type of support systems and sufficient coping strategies. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. Kognitiewe beheerterapie in groepsverband met leerders met ATHV / Cognitive control therapy in a group situation with learners with ADHD

Van Schalkwyk, Maria Magdalena 30 September 2002 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / In this study quantitative research is employed to determine if cognitive control therapy can successfully be utilized in a group situation to alleviate cognitive deficiency in learners with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Learners with ADHD often do not gain from traditional play- and psychotherapy due to the fact that they do not possess the required cognitive structure necessary to support successful learning. Many of these learners do not receive sufficient assistance and support due to a shortage of government supported educational psychological aid. An empirical investigation of limited scope was performed to establish whether cognitive deficiencies can be alleviated by means of applying cognitive control therapy in a group situation. A one-group pretest-posttest design was utilized where the same group of subjects was studies before and after the experimental treatment. The results indicate that the cognitive control therapy program resulted in a considerable change. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Voorligting)
