Transcending Death Through Organizational Birth

Fox, Matthew J. January 2015 (has links)
<p>In this dissertation, I develop and test a theory linking the legacy motive to entrepreneurship. After examining evidence in support of the desire to make a lasting impact as a source of motivation for the founders of new organizations, I propose that the importance of this motive has been overlooked, due to a lack of conceptual clarity regarding the legacy construct. I argue that examining the relationship between entrepreneurship and the legacy motive contributes greatly to understanding of both phenomena. I develop a theory of entrepreneurial legacies, in which I explain how understanding the connection between the legacy motive and entrepreneurship requires recognizing the variety of lasting impacts different people can choose to pursue. I then examine the implications of the different desired legacies for the entrepreneurs and their organizations, particularly for critical funding decisions at the beginning of the new venture, and for decisions related to succession, when the organization needs to replace the founder. Next, I conducted two studies to examine the effects of the legacy motive on entrepreneurial decision making. In the first study, I tested the relative strength of the legacy motive among firm founders and those who work for others. I developed new measures of the intended benefits and beneficiaries of a legacy, to examine their relationship to each other and related variables using an online sample of engineers. I found that engineers high on the legacy motive are more likely to indicate founding the firm they currently work for, own more of their current employer, and have filed more patents. In the second study, I conducted a qualitative examination of medical startups, examining the processes that led executives in these firms to the current stage of their careers, and the elements of their work lives that they experience as meaningful. Finally, I discuss the implications of the link between the entrepreneurship and the legacy motive, and the different ways in which people define what makes these two constructs meaningful.</p> / Dissertation

In Pursuit of Women Scientists: Using Science Plays to Promote Women Entering STEM Disciplines

Hartman, Danielle 01 January 2016 (has links)
Higher education currently seeks to increase female enrollment in STEM. Women face many challenges attempting to breach this male dominated arena with misconceptions, gender stereotypes, and few female role models. With the recent trend in higher education to encourage more women to enter the STEM disciplines and K-12 schools cutting funding for arts programs, theatre may be losing its value in the education system. The value of interdisciplinary studies is beginning to be forgotten during the grade school years as school boards battle budget cuts, but we can remind society of it through science plays. Theatre artists use other disciplines such as psychology, history, and science to enhance their work, but I argue that theatre can also help promote the needs of other disciplines. Science plays have become increasingly popular over the last two and a half decades and have done much for theatre. Science plays can assist in addressing the issues facing women attempting to enter STEM disciplines. The majority of science plays feature historical people and can therefore provide the much needed role models and address the other issues and misconceptions. To do this, science plays featuring women should target middle and high school girls as well as their teachers, parents, and guidance counselors who often discourage girls from pursing STEM interests.

Tétrault, Gabriel 04 1900 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the representations of the act of inscribing in Samuel Beckett’s short story Premier Amour with a particular focus on two specific inscriptions – namely firstly, the funeral (the epitaph the narrator composes for himself after his father’s death) and secondly, the beloved (the name he inscribes once he “falls in love”). By looking at these, the dissertation investigates the notions of both reading and writing. The dissertation is divided into two chapters: the first, which looks at the inscription as something visible and legible; and the second, which focuses on inscribing as an act which has a legacy. By using and comparing these two approaches, this dissertation demonstrates how Premier Amour can be seen as a first step towards a general comprehension of a written “literary legacy”. Specifically, the dissertation shows the linguistic construction of the conceptual interlacing of the inscriptions and the legacy it conveys and presupposes, as this interlacing is inherent to our understanding of the literary and the human world. By means of a conclusion, this dissertation considers the conflicting relationship between, on the one hand, the contemporaneousness which dreams of a world without inscription, and on the other hand, the inevitability of inscription.

Institut odkazu v českém a italském dědickém právu / The institution of legacy in Czech and Italian inheritanc

Koníčková, Markéta January 2014 (has links)
The thesis deals with one of the reinstated institutes which are introduced by act number 89/2012 Sb., that is by the new Civil Code and it is the institute of Legacy. This work is divided into five chapters, where firstly it discusses the characteristics of this institute in Roman Law and compares it with the institute of fideicommissum. In addition this work deals with characteristics of this institute in Italian law from the times of Unification of Italy up to the present day, therefore it briefly deals with both of the Italian civil codes. The most extensive chapter deals with the institute in our own legal history, especially about its form in ABGB, the "warp" and the "middle" code and it is followed by chapter, which deals with our new Civil Code, which has returned this institute into our Inheritance Law. The whole work is concluded by a comparison of the similarity of this institute in Italian and Czech legal order. This work is elaborated on positive note and its aim is to show that this is very practical institute, which is in both ours and Italian law very similar even though it has been developing for centuries. I believe that it could become normal part of donation mortis causa.

Muñoz Recuay, Edison Francisco January 2007 (has links)
The Legacy information systems were created with the purpose of automate process that before of the informatics invention were made in a manual way, these systems have gained prominence over the years because organizations have become increasingly dependent of them, and the information they generate and manage have a great value. Nowadays new tendencies and paradigms make that business and organizations base the majority of their process in information systems and it is imperative that new technology can works together with legacy systems, for this reason the information must be integrated. Therefore under this context, is necessary to raise an alternative solution for integrating information of different legacy systems. In this thesis, is examined the problem, is described the importance of legacy systems in contrast with new current technological tendencies, besides is analyzed tools which we can achieve information integration and is purposed an alternative solution to problem through a multiplatform information system integrator, additionally, it proposes a integration methodology, leaving an established base to perform the development of a new system in order to replace the legacy system. The proposed solution has been proven through a case study in a business tourism sector, which was able to verify: that it is possible to integrate information from a system that handles flat files, display the information on a web interface for example, and start migration to a new relational database. After completing the proof of solution, we can say that this can integrate information regardless of the operating system and can be used in different organizations or companies.

Digital Systems and the Experience of Legacy: Supporting Meaningful Interactions with Multigenerational Data

Gulotta, Rebecca 01 August 2016 (has links)
People generate vast quantities of digital information as a product of their interactions with digital systems and with other people. As this information grows in scale and becomes increasingly distributed through different accounts, identities, and services, researchers have studied how best to develop tools to help people manage and derive meaning from it. Looking forward, these issues acquire new complexity when considered in the context of the information that is generated across one’s life or across generations. The long-term lens of a multigenerational timeframe elicits new questions about how people can engage with these heterogeneous collections of information and how future generations will manage and make sense of the information left behind by their ancestors. My prior work has examined how people perceive the role that systems will play in the long-term availability, management, and interpretation of digital information. This work demonstrates that while people certainly ascribe meaning to aspects of their digital information and believe that there is value held in their largely uncurated digital materials, it is not clear how or if that digital information will be transmitted, interpreted, or maintained by future generations. Furthermore, this work illustrates that there is a tension between the use of digital systems as ways of archiving content and sharing aspects of one’s life, and an uncertainty about the long term availability of the information shared through those services. Finally, this work illustrates the ways in which existing systems do not meet the needs of current users who are developing archives of their own digital information nor of future users who might try and derive meaning from information left behind by other people. Building on that earlier work, my dissertation work investigates how we can develop systems that foster engagement with lifetimes or generations of digital information in ways that are sensitive to how people define and communicate their identity and how they reflect on their life and experiences. For this work, I built a website that uses people’s Facebook data to ask them to reflect on the ways their life has changed over time. Participants’ experiences using this website illustrate the types of information that are and are not captured by digital systems. In addition, this work highlights the ways in which people engage with memories, artifacts, and experiences of people who have passed away and considers how digital systems and information can support those practices. I also interviewed participants about their experiences researching their family history, the ways in which they remember people who’ve passed away, and unresolved questions they have about the past. The findings from this aspect of the work contribute a better understanding of how digital systems, and the digital information people create over the course of their lives, intersect with the processes of death, dying, and remembrance.

Software patterns from legacy systems reverse engineering.

Braga, Rosana Teresinha Vaccare 22 December 1998 (has links)
The object oriented reverse engineering of a legacy system, originally developed using the procedural paradigm, is the basis for two different reengineering approaches. In the first, the reengineering is done to change the implementation paradigm by segmentation, followed by the semi-automatic transformation to an object oriented language. In the second, recurring patterns are first recognized in the object model produced by the reverse engineering, and then the reengineering is done adopting these patterns. Results obtained by these two approaches are compared to assess their maintainability, legibility and reuse. The original version of the legacy system used in this experience has about twenty thousand lines of Clipper code and refers to an electric and mechanic car repair shop. For the reverse engineering phase the Fusion/RE method is used, and a proposal is done for its evolution, adding features to detail its system analysis model abstraction phase. To change the system orientation paradigm, from procedural to object-oriented, two additional phases are proposed to be conducted after the application of the Fusion/RE method: the forward design of the system and the legacy code segmentation. Hints and rationales are supplied to conduct the code segmentaion. The code transformation from segmented Clipper to Java is done with support of the Draco-Puc machine. A strategy is proposed for pattern recognition based on the system object model obtained through reverse engineering. Through it, instances of Type-Object, Association-Object, State Across a Collection and Behaviour Across a Collection patterns can be recognized. Delphi implementation experiments of these patterns are done.

Processos artísticos no continente latino-americano: uma perspectiva histórica e crítica da I Bienal latino-americana de 1978 e seu legado para a América Latina e o Brasil / Artistic Processes in Latin America: a historical and critical perspective of the I Latin American Biennial of 1978 and its legacy for Latin America and Brazil

Fatio, Carla Francisca 01 June 2012 (has links)
Initially, this work presents a research on the I Latin America Biennial of 1978 and its Symposium. Secondly, the event brought subsidies to critical thinking about Contemporary Latin America continent. We have noted the relevance of the dialogue about art in its specifically Latin American identity (neither American nor European) occurred in this biennial, and within the frames of the São Paulo Biennial Foundation. Moreover, the thesis is presented in four chapters, besides the introduction and final considerations. The chapters bring information about: (1) São Paulo Biennial Foundation, including the view of the international editions plus the fourth national ones; (2) its organization of the first Latin America Biennial, its position and expectations of the art criticism; (3) the Symposium, the presentation of some thesis, and its artists belief; (4) the thought of the art critics of this period, especially the critical view of Aracy Amaral, the procedures related to a possible II Latin America Biennial, the commissions of art critics; in particular, the comparison of the I Latin American Biennial with the 30th São Paulo Biennial, and similarities with the 54th Venice Biennial and Documenta 13, plus, the Biennial of MERCOSUR and VentoSul. We recovered some unpublished documents and were concerned to reconstruct historically the process of organizing this biennial in study. Ideas and strategies designed by the artistic director (curator) about the concept of \"Latin American art and also by the art critics involved in the Art and Culture Council as well as in the Symposium were extracted from the documents. We have also investigated the issue of the Biennial being partially unknown for so many decades, especially in studies about art in Brazil. All in all, in the undertaken study, the artistic and political scene of the 1970 and 1980s were considered whenever it is a relevant context to understand the idea of a large Latin American exhibition, its organization and its critical and cultural branches for the debate on Latin America and Caribbean. A special attention is given to the role of art in the process of integration of this region of the American continent.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Josenice Regina Blumenthal de Moraes.pdf: 951545 bytes, checksum: 2d936c3060acb6964b736fd6af060cb9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-05-10 / Within family business literature, there are currently many issues about succession, the heirs´ skills and, consequently, about the hopes of their long term survival. The realm of these issues is the main justification for this dissertation, which first considered the ensuing research question: are the heirs in family businesses heard? Following this primary research question, the main objective of this dissertation was developed: to comprehend what it means to be the heir of an ancestor that has built up and left behind a business legacy, and how this fact influences the subject´s life; and, more specifically, try to identify in which ways the heirs life is affected based on the subjects own perceptions about this process. In order to achieve these objectives, a qualitative investigation was carried out with an instrumental case study design grounded in the Systemic Approach of the family and in the Three- Dimensional Model of Family Business Development - which tries to differentiate family relationships from the business context. The analysis was also grounded in the Intergenerational Approach, when dealing with legacy and delegations aspects. The subjects of this research were three heirs that were asked by the researcher herself to join this study. Data was drawn from the recordings of semi-structured interviews carried out with the participants, and also from the following instruments applied: the Constructivist Genogram and the Family Time-Line. Preceding individual data analysis, the analysis was first broadly conducted so to, later on, identify differences and similarities amongst the cases. The results reported individual differences concerning the participants unique life stories and similarities that are constituent of the heir-phenomenon and its influences in their life, which in turn, can be generalized. This dissertation points out paths for further in-depth scientific research, specifically in Brazilian academia, that can help provide further comprehension of the heir-phenomenon within our country s peculiarities / Atualmente existem preocupações a respeito da sucessão dentro de empresas familiares, competências dos herdeiros, e consequentemente, com as expectativas de sua preservação. Essas preocupações justificam a realização desta dissertação considerando a seguinte inquietação: seriam esses herdeiros ouvidos?

Silva, Sonilda Aparecida de Fátima 06 November 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-10T10:36:50Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 SONILDA APARECIDA DE FATIMA SILVA.pdf: 2309355 bytes, checksum: 5d08cad540b57ff4317a34037855c6e6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-11-06 / This work analyses the immaterial legacy of the miners of the town of Campos Verdes, as a cultural patrimony, historically contextualizing the town from the discovery of the mine until nowadays. It also aims to evidence the miner s knowledge, contextualizing the idea of patrimony as a local identity category, establishing a relation with Choay (2001), when he shows that the new means offered by science and by technique generate a tendency to enrichment without worrying about preserving the cultural assets, either material or immaterial, as in Campos Verdes. Getting to know how the emeralds were discovered, how the town was settled and emancipated, will be important to understand its historical context, which is on the mind of the inhabitants of Campos Verdes, and that will also help those citizens, who are part of that history, feel that they belong to the cultural inheritance of those mines. In order to have this work done some methodological procedures were used, such as: ethnographic research; analysis of documents; bibliographic research; polls and oral testimonies about the local history. These procedures aimed to investigate the historical context of the town of Campos Verdes, women s life at the mines, and the knowledge of the miners.
