"They Want to Control Everything" - Discourse and Lifestyle in Contemporary Turkey

Bädeker, Lars January 2016 (has links)
Based upon anthropological fieldwork and contemporary literature as well as an analysis of media reports and statements by government officials such as current president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, this thesis explores the interrelations between political discourses, lifestyle, and identity construction in contemporary Turkey. In the thesis, it is depicted how certain lifestyle choices are legally limited or (drawing on moral, religious, and nationalist discourses) labeled as 'bad' or 'wrong' by the current AKP government and certain parts of society. The informants interviewed for this thesis, mostly well-educated, young Turkish urbanites, feel like these restrictions of lifestyle choices limit their possibilities to freely construct and express their identities, which leads to feelings of resentment, unhappiness, and discomfort. By analyzing political developments in the 20th and 21st century, it is furthermore illustrated that authoritarianism has been a substantial part of the Turkish state project ever since the founding of the Turkish Republic. The current political events and conflicts about lifestyle and identity construction, it is argued, have to be understood in this context rather than depicting them as based upon a strict dividing line between 'secular' and 'religious' parts of society, as it is often depicted in Western media.

Assessment of healthy lifestyle practices in type 2 diabetes patients and association with glycated haemoglobin levels in Harare, Zimbabwe

Chipinduro, Joseph January 2018 (has links)
Magister Public Health - MPH / Introduction: The control of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is pivoted on adherence to a healthy lifestyle (healthy diet, physical activity and non-smoking). Zimbabwe reports a high burden of T2DM related complications suggesting an increased inability by patients to control their blood glucose levels. This study, therefore, sought to describe the healthy lifestyle practices of T2DM patients in Harare, Zimbabwe and associate these practices with their glycated haemoglobin (HBA1C) levels, a marker for the control of diabetes. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done. Participants were T2DM patients who were 18 years and older from two tertiary hospital diabetes clinics in Harare. Data collection was done using a structured questionnaire which was interviewer-administered along with height, weight and HBA1C measurements. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the study populations. Chi square test was used to calculate statistically significant associations between healthy lifestyle behaviours and demographics or HBA1C levels at the significant level of 0.05%.

Sjuksköterskans arbetssätt för att främja hälsa genom egenvård och livsstilsförändringar hos personer med hypertoni. : En litteraturöversikt / The nurse's ways of working to promote health through self-care and lifestyle changes in persons with hypertension. : A literature review

Helgesson, Elisabeth, Lundström Ebbesdotter, Gunilla January 2019 (has links)
Background: Hypertension is a global health problem that can lead to serious complications such as stroke and congestive heart failure. Nurses' work includes promoting lifestyle changes, motivating, compliance with medication, and providing regular follow-ups to improve blood pressure. More knowledge is needed on which working methods nurses use to promote health and support sustainable lifestyle changes. Aim: To illuminate the nurse's ways of working to promote health through lifestyle changes and self-care in persons with hypertension. Method: A literature review according to Friberg was chosen as the method. Database searches were carried out in CINAHL, PubMed and PsycInfo. Nine scientific articles were included after having been analysed, classified and compiled in an article matrix. Result: The analysis resulted in two main themes and five subthemes. The first theme was Creating change which described how the nurse responded to the patient's specific opportunities, expectations, knowledge needs and motivation for initiating lifestyle change. The second theme was Maintaining change which describes how the nurse guides, promotes and follows up the person to create a sustainable lifestyle change and an improved self-care strategy. Conclusion: The nurse's ways of working to promote health through lifestyle change and self-care in persons with hypertension can be designed in different ways. Regardless of which nursing philosophy lies behind it, it appears that a person-centred approach stimulates the person's motivation for a changed lifestyle through increased participation and responsibility.

Olikheter mellan den norska och svenska klädmarknaden : en studie av Lindex / Differences between the Norwegian and Swedish clothes market : a study of Lindex

Hedelin, Emma, Löfqvist, Emma January 2009 (has links)
In today’s fashion market there are a great number of actors that offer a huge selection ofproducts. The fashion world today covers the whole world and a result of this, the competitionamong fashion companies are enormous, leading to a tough climate for companies in today’sfashion industry. There is an overproduction of goods on the market and companies mustcompete for customers because of today's homogeneous goods and prices. Caused by theglobal competition, there is an increased need for fashion chains to get to know their marketsand strategically meet the challenge to win the consumers attention. We have chosen in our study to research, describe and analyze what the main differencesbetween the clothing markets affecting a Lindex audience in Sweden and Norway are. Wehave defined ourselves to product group women’s wear. Our intention is to gain an insightinto how Lindex clothing market differs between Sweden and Norway but also to find anydifferences in culture and perception about fashion and trends. The essay has a hermeneutical approach because the aim was to interpret and analyze theempirical material we collected through our case study of Lindex and its markets. We chosean abductive approach because we, in our survey have assumed from our empirical material,i.e. inductive approach, and then linked together with our observations from the surveys andinterviews with the theories, based on the deductive approach. The focus of our essay isdescriptive because we have chosen to explain the differences between the Lindex Swedishand Norwegian market through the company’s perspective, but also from a consumer’s pointof view. We have carried out a qualitative study by gathering the material for our report fromboth interviews and surveys, together with theory to create an overall picture. In our theoretical frame of reference, we have chosen to focus on a number of key areas fromour material. We chose to primarily focus on consumer behavior, as it is central in our studies. The studies involve verbal interviews with marketing manager Nina Haugen from the LindexOslo office and Lena Renman from the Gothenburg office. Surveys on both markets provide asnapshot of the consumer view of Lindex. In the analysis part of the essay we have focusedon the similarities and differences between theory and empiri. By our study of the LindexNorwegian and Swedish market, we have found out that the concepts are similar to oneanother, but that the markets differ in important areas. We have identified the differences inhow the Norwegian and Swedish Lindex consumers view and understand their products.Simultaneously cultural aspects such as traditions and celebrations can also affect consumerbehavior. Furthermore, there are differences on how trends and fashions are perceived andassimilated by consumers. Another problem to take into account are the different demandsand needs within the market. / Program: Textilekonomutbildningen

The Role of Arts in Nordic Society: Health and Lifestyle

Zamora, Soledad January 2019 (has links)
The role of arts in both formal and non-formal education has been scientifically demonstrated to create positive outcomes in people to deal with all kinds of social problems in daily life. At present, there are international public and private institutions that support this view, such as the International Arts Education Week, celebrated for the first time by UNESCO on 21-27 May 2012 when not only artists participated, but also educators, researchers, NGO actors, and international associations. This provides us with a wider perspective on how arts and education can play an interdisciplinary role in society. The aim of this research is to study how arts (e.g., performative arts, literature, film) interact with and affect Nordic society; the kind of practices, contributions and challenges that exist within the cultural and educational sectors (based on three case studies) and their relationship between the government in the form of cultural policies in Denmark, Sweden and Finland in support of the well-being of the Nordic lifestyle whenever applying a wider perspective to the role of the arts in society.  This qualitative study is composed of three case studies, which explore the role of arts in three Nordic institutions (two public ones and a private one): 1) The Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland; 2) Skissernas Museum - Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art in Lund, Sweden; and 3) Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humbaelek, Denmark. The empirical material collected has been done through the usage of the hermeneutics—texts, semi-structured interviews of professionals (two art educators with multidisciplinary backgrounds, two art historians, and a museum guide), publications, catalogues, and active participation in cultural/educational activities in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. The data collected is analyzed within the framework of the reflexive methodology. “The Theory of Communicative Action” by Jürgen Habermas aims to understand the multidisciplinary relationship among the artistic/educational institutions, society, and government as support for the well-being and sustainability of Nordic society.  The results will reveal a multidisciplinary application of the arts as support to Nordic welfare, healthand lifestyle. The results will also show how arts can be included in people’s lifestyles in an organic manner, being a benefit for the well-being of the society and supporting the sustainability of Nordic welfare when people have a wider understanding of the application of the arts in their lives, for instance, through literature, concerts, performances, but also, attending to festivals, arts and crafts activities, gardens, parks, and even experiencing architecture.

Adlerian Lifestyle Assessment

Bitter, James Robert 17 July 2017 (has links)
Adler challenged the Freudian model (the psychology of possession) by focusing on a psychology of use and the style of living each individual adopted in a personal movement toward self-selected/ self-created (life) goals. Today, this movement is called lifestyle or one’s style of living. This workshop teaches a process for lifestyle assessment and the use of this process in therapeutic practice.
