Les XIXe et XXe siècles sont caractérisés comme des siècles de la critique. La plus grande partie de cette thèse porte sur l’analyse de la « Nouvelle Critique » en relation avec l’œuvre de Jean Racine. Ce mouvement critique qui a marqué les années soixante, s’intéresse plutôt aux structures sous-Jacentes qui peuvent être dégagées d’une œuvre littéraire.Les représentants de la Nouvelle Critique qui sont en principe, Lucien Goldmann, Charles Mauron et Roland Barthes dégagent de l’œuvre racinienne, chacun de sa propre façon, une structure de base. La critique sociologique de Goldmann, la psychocritique de Mauron et la critique structurale de Barthes offrent plusieurs pistes de réflexion.Présenter les méthodes proposées par la Nouvelle Critique, dégager l’essentiel de ses théories et apprécier leur valeur en démontrant la raison qui les a rendues fondamentales ainsi que comprendre la polémique déclenchée autour d’elle sont pour ce travail des tâches à accomplir. Or, cerner les enjeux de la « Nouvelle Critique » dans la critique racinienne en examinant les critiques faites par d’autres critiques constitue l’objectif de ce travail. / The nineteenth and twentieth centuries are characterized as centuries of literary criticism. The primary objective of this thesis will focus on the methodology used by “New Criticism” in relation to the work of Jean Racine. The New Criticism was a formalist movement, popular in the sixties, which focuses on objectively evaluating the underlying structure and text from literary work.Representatives of ‘‘New Criticism”, such as, Lucien Goldmann, Charles Mauron and Roland Barthes utilized structure methods to interpret Racine's literary works. The Sociological criticism of Goldmann, the Psychoanalytic criticism of Mauron, and the Structuralism of Barthes offer several areas of consideration.The aim of this study is to present the methods proposed by “New Criticism”, to reveal the essence of its theories, to assess their value by demonstrating the reason of their importance, and to understand controversy sparked around this formalist movement. So, identifying the “challenges of the ‘’New Criticism” in Racine’s criticism’’ by examining the criticisms made by other critics is the purpose of this work.

Satire of Counsel, Counsel of Satire: Representing Advisory Relations in Later Medieval LiteratureNewman, Jonathan M. 20 January 2009 (has links)
Satire and counsel recur together in the secular literature of the High and Late
Middle Ages. I analyze their collocation in Latin, Old Occitan, and Middle English texts
from the twelfth to the fifteenth century in works by Walter Map, Alan of Lille, John of
Salisbury, Daniel of Beccles, John Gower, William of Poitiers, Thomas Hoccleve, and
John Skelton. As types of discourse, satire and counsel resemble each other in the way
they reproduce scenarios of social interaction. Authors combine satire and counsel to
reproduce these scenarios according to the protocols of real-life social interaction.
Informed by linguistic pragmatics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics and cultural
anthropology, I examine the relational rhetoric of these texts to uncover a sometimes
complex and reflective ethical discourse on power which sometimes implicates itself in
the practices it condemns. The dissertation draws throughout on sociolinguistic methods
for examining verbal interaction between unequals, and assesses what this focus can
contribute to recent scholarly debates on the interrelation of social and literary practices
in the later Middle Ages.
In the first chapter I introduce the concepts and methodologies that inform this
dissertation through a detailed consideration of Distinction One of Walter Map’s De
nugis curialium . While looking at how Walter Map combines discourses of satire and
counsel to negotiate a new social role for the learned cleric at court, I advocate treating
satire as a mode of expression more general than ‘literary’ genre and introduce the

theories and methods that inform my treatment of literary texts as social interaction,
considering also how these approaches can complement new historicist interpretation.
Chapter two looks at how twelfth-century authors of didactic poetry appropriate
relational discourses from school and household to claim the authoritative roles of teacher
and father. In the third chapter, I focus on texts that depict relations between princes and
courtiers, especially the Prologue of the Confessio Amantis which idealizes its author
John Gower as an honest counselor and depicts King Richard II (in its first recension) as
receptive to honest counsel. The fourth chapter turns to poets with the uncertain social
identities of literate functionaries at court. Articulating their alienation and satirizing the
ploys of courtiers—including even satire itself—Thomas Hoccleve in the Regement of
Princes and John Skelton in The Bowge of Court undermine the satirist-counselor’s claim
to authenticity. In concluding, I consider how this study revises understanding of the
genre of satire in the Middle Ages and what such an approach might contribute to the
study of Jean de Meun and Geoffrey Chaucer.

Text in German, summaries in German and English / Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist, einen Beitrag aus der alttestamentlichen Wissenschaft zur gegenwärtigen Situation der westlichen Kirche zu leisten. Dabei soll der Text von Exodus 1-15 als Grundlage dienen, um das alternatives Bewusstsein herauszustellen, das dem Volk Gottes zu allen Zeiten helfen kann, sich in herrschenden Machtstrukturen zu verstehen und sich seiner Identität und Aufgabe bewusst zu bleiben.
Die Untersuchung folgt einem literaturwissenschaftlichen Interesse, das die „Endgestalt“ zum Ausgangspunkt hat. Die Erzählung weist bewusst verwendete Strukturen und Stilmittel auf, die für die Interpretation von Bedeutung sind. Die Untersuchung soll jene Stilmittel herausstellen, welche für das Thema der Arbeit signifikant sind.
Die Arbeit zeigt, dass die Exoduserzählung zum Aufbau eines alternativen Bewusstseins dient, auf dessen Basis Lebenspraxis und Zukunft von Gottes Volk geformt wird. So verstanden helfen die Texte auch der westlichen Kirche, sich in unterschiedlichen dominanten
Kontexten als »Kontrastgesellschaft« zu verstehen. / The goal of this dissertation is to make a particular contribution from Old Testament research to the present situation of the Church in the Western world. Exodus 1-15 serves as a foundational text for establishing an alternative consciousness which helps the People of
God, throughout all times, to maintain an understanding of themselves in the midst of other prevailing power structures and to remain aware of their identity and mission.
The research uses the methodology of literary criticism, where the “final stage” of the text serves as the starting point. The exodus narrative reveals intentional structuring and stylistic devices which are important for interpretation. Each of the literary devices significant to this dissertation topic will be identified.
The dissertation shows that the exodus narrative creates an alternative consciousness which in turn influences the life praxis and future of the People of God. Theorising the environment in fiction: exploring ecocriticism and ecofeminism in selected black female writers’ worksPasi, Juliet Sylvia 09 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This thesis investigates the relationship between humans and the nonhuman world or natural environment in selected literary works by black female writers in colonial and post-colonial Namibia and Zimbabwe. Some Anglo-American scholars have argued that many African writers have resisted the paradigms that inform much of global ecocriticism and have responded to it weakly. They contend that African literary feminist studies have not attracted much mainstream attention yet mainly to raise some issues concerning ecologically oriented literary criticism and writing. Given this unjust criticism, the study posits that there has been a growing interest in ecocriticism and ecofeminism in literary works by African writers, male and female, and they have represented the social, political (colonial and anti-colonial) and economic discourse in their works. The works critiqued are Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions (1988) and The Book of Not (2006), Neshani Andreas’ The Purple Violet of Oshaantu (2001) and No Violet Bulawayo’s We Need New Names (2013). The thrust of this thesis is to draw interconnections between man’s domination of nature and the subjugation and dominance of black women as depicted in different creative works. The texts in this study reveal that the existing Anglo-American framework used by some scholars to define ecocriticism and ecofeminism should open up and develop debates and positions that would allow different ways of reading African literature. The study underscored the possibility of black female creative works to transform the definition of nature writing to allow an expansion and all encompassing interpretation of nature writing. Contrary to the claims by Western scholars that African literature draws its vision of nature writing from the one produced by colonial discourse, this thesis argues that African writers and scholars have always engaged nature and the environment in multiple discourses. This study breaks new ground by showing that the feminist aspects of ecrocriticism are essential to cover the hermeneutic gap created by their exclusion. On closer scrutiny, the study reveals that African women writers have also addressed and highlighted issues that show the link between African women’s roles and their environment. / English Studies / D.
