Buscamos analisar alguns aspectos peculiares dessa obra, enfatizando-se dentre eles seu modo de narração, que combina aspectos assustadores do romance gótico com elementos da estética realista do século XIX. Também são objetos de estudo desta pesquisa o que chamamos de "espacialidade gótica", que se evidencia nas descrições do cenário principal - Wuthering Heights, a antiga e sinistra casa que também dá o título ao romance -, e os temas e motivos do gênero gótico que foram revistos por Emily Brontë, tais como o duplo, o qual é amplamente explorado em textos com inspiração gótica, a exemplo de Manfred, poema dramático de Byron. Por fim, realizamos a análise das características do casal de protagonistas do romance, Catherine e Heathcliff, visando apontar um diálogo intertextual do livro de Brontë com obras do gênero gótico ou inseridas na tradição literária inglesa, tais como Paraíso perdido, de John Milton. / Abstract: The corpus of this research is Wuthering Heights, the only novel written by the English writer Emily Brontë that since its first publication in 1847 has generated contradictory reactions that oscillate between fascination and repulsion among readers. We analyse some peculiar aspects of this work, emphasizing among them, its mode of narration that combines frightening aspects of Gothic novel with elements of realistic aesthetics of the nineteenth century. They are also objects of this study, which we call "Gothic spatiality" that stands out in the description of its main scenario - Wuthering Heights, the old and sinister house that provides the title of the novel -, and the themes and motifs of the Gothic genre that were reviewed by Emily Brontë, such as the double, which is widely exploited in texts with Gothic inspiration, such as Manfred, dramatic poem of Byron. Finally we analyse the couple of protagonists in the novel, Catherine and Heathcliff, seeking to appoint an intertextual dialogue between Brontë's book with works of Gothic genre or inserted in the English literary tradition, such as Paradise Lost, by John Milton. / Doutor

As obras que tomamos como base teórica para a análise são: Lima Barreto e o Espaço Romanesco (1976), de Osman Lins, A linguagem cinematográfica (2003), de Marcel Martin, A narrativa cinematográfica (2009), de André Gaudreault e François Jost. Propomos a verificação da desconstrução da noção de gênero e dos discursos historicamente categorizados nas narrativas, considerando a constituição dos personagens dos sexos masculino e feminino e suas relações. Abordamos a relação entre personagens de ambos os sexos, os distintos focos narrativos, os símbolos, e, a partir de tais apontamentos, observamos que a categorização de gênero e de sexo é resultado de desdobramentos sociais. Ao ponderarmos a representação do gênero nas narrativas mansfieldianas, estamos ampliando a questão para as instâncias sociais, uma vez que a literatura é a representação de perspectivas do real. Tomamos como base teórica a crítica feminista de Virginia Woolf, a teoria da performatividade de Judith Butler e o conceito de "exotopia" de Mikhail Bakhtin, a fim de avaliarmos os aspectos culturais de gênero, a tradição literária de autoria feminina, as identificações ideológicas e a constituição de personagens ficcionais / Abstract: This study analyzes of the short stories from the collection Bliss & other stories (1920), by the New Zealand author Katherine Mansfield (1888 - 1923), proposing the verification of the deconstruction of gender roles and of the historically categorized discourses in the narratives, and considering the constitution of male and female characters and their relationships. Therefore, we address the relationship between characters of both sexes, the different points of view, the symbols, and, from these concepts, we observe that the categorization of gender and sex is a result of social developments. In pondering the representation of gender in Mansfield's narratives, we expand the matter to social instances, since literature is the representation of the perspective on reality. We use, as a theoretical basis, Virginia Woolf's feminist criticism, Judith Butler's gender performativity and the concept of "exotopy" by Mikhail Bakhtin, in order to assess the cultural aspects of the gender issue, the literary tradition of women's writing, the ideological identifications and the creation of fictional characters / Doutor

O romance tem como elemento fundamental símbolos representados por imagens, objetos e lugares que vão revelar também ao leitor a possível crítica ao ambiente patriarcal, observada pela fuga da personagem feminina de uma espécie de confinamento, em busca de seu espaço. Considerando ainda a importância das significações para a obra literária, este trabalho também pretende elucidar como o símbolo é trabalhado na construção do espaço e das personagens femininas. No primeiro capítulo, abordamos brevemente a vida e obra da autora, como também a fortuna crítica produzida sobre o romance. No segundo capítulo, apresentamos um levantamento das principais teorias acerca da ficção científica distópica, pós-modernidade e feminismo. Ainda no segundo capítulo, buscamos analisar as personagens presentes na sociedade pós-apocalíptica e verificar as diversas vozes presentes na intertextualidade. No terceiro capítulo, utilizando teorias sobre a simbologia, analisamos os símbolos presentes no romance. Sendo assim, o trabalho também ressalta como a obra colabora para divulgar a crítica sugerida pela autora contra o modelo patriarcal de sociedade / Abstract: This dissertation intends to analyze the symbols in the novel Heroes and Villains, published in 1969 by the British author Angela Carter. The novel has as a fundamental characteristic the use of symbols represented by images, possibly built as a criticism directed to the patriarchal society, bearing in mind the main character's escape from her confinement. This work has the intention to shed a light on how the symbols are built to represent aspects such as space and the female characters. In the first chapter of this study, we touch briefly on the life and works of the author, as well as the critical pieces produced on the novel. In the second chapter we cover the most relevant theories concerning dystopian science fiction, post modernism and feminism. Still in the second chapter, we analyze the characters in the context of a post-apocalyptic society and their many voices in their intertextuality. The third chapter is dedicated to the analysis, using the theories on symbology, of the symbols present in the novel. First a review of the post-colonial theory was made. With the study of the writings of authors such as Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha and Gayatri Chakravarty Spivak will be possible to comprehend the post-colonial thought. Also, some literary texts were revisited in a way that their colonialist points of view help to built a counterpoint to the post-colonial precepts. In a second moment, Heart of Darkness was analyzed in a special way, through the recovery of meaningful parts of the text that can illustrate the mistakes and understandings of the criticisms made to Conrad‘s literary text by names that emerged in the post-colonial period, such as the Nigerian author, Chinua Achebe. With this rereading we aim to perceive the true message that Joseph Conrad wanted to send by telling the story of Kurtz and Marlow as explorers in Africa. / O presente estudo tem como objetivo fazer uma releitura da obra Heart of Darkness, escrita por Joseph Conrad, através de uma perspectiva pós-colonial. Para tanto, primeiramente será feito um resgate da teoria pós-colonialista a partir do estudo dos pensamentos de autores como Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha e Gayatri Chakravarty Spivak. Além disso, alguns textos literários serão retomados uma vez que suas visões colonialistas ajudam na construção de um contraponto para com os preceitos pós-coloniais. Em um segundo momento, Heart of Darkness será analisado de modo especial, através da retomada de passagens significativas da obra que possam ilustrar os erros e acertos das críticas que feitas ao texto por nomes que emergiram no período pós-colonial, tal qual o escritor nigeriano Chinua Achebe. Através dessa releitura, busca-se o entendimento da verdadeira mensagem que Joseph Conrad queria deixar ao contar a história de Kurtz e Marlow como desbravadores da África.

A intenção deste trabalho é efetuar uma leitura do romance O Mensageiro, do autor inglês L.P. Hartley, na forma de uma jornada ao país estrangeiro do passado do protagonista-narrador. Tal leitura é uma espécie de convite aceito para a viagem, que esteticamente deixa sugestões sob a forma de truques, fragmentos de mensagens veladas, expressões ambíguas, sombras, vazios no caminho. Todavia, Mercúrio, o mensageiro dos antigos deuses, o protetor dos viajantes, o trapaceiro, é agora um ser indistinto, cuja imagem e função passou por grandes transformações ao longo da viagem até a modernidade. Guerras, restos de experiências traumáticas coletivas e pessoais são recuperadas na rota movediça do narrador melancólico, sob a forma de substância própria para a narração. Nietzsche e Walter Benjamin são companheiros na trajetória, provendo o suporte teórico básico para a viagem. / The intention of the present work is to make a reading of the novel The Go- Between, by the British writer, L.P. Hartley, in the form of a journey through the strange country of the protagonist/ narrator´s own past. Such reading comes as an accepted invitation to make the trip together with the narrator, who aesthetically leaves suggestions under the form of tricks, fragments of veiled messages, ambiguous expressions, shadows, gaps on his way. However, Mercury, the messenger of the ancient Gods – the protector of the travelers, the trickster is now is an indistinct being, whose image and function has undergone great transformations during the journey until modern times. Wars, remains of traumatic collective and personal experiences, are visualized in form of substantial fragmented material proper for narrative throughout the unstable route of the melancholy protagonist. Nietzsche and Walter Benjamin provide the basic theoretical support throughout the route.

A presente dissertação consiste em um estudo das imagens simbólicas dos Sonetos de Shakespeare sob a luz das teorias modernas e contemporâneas do imaginário, mito e símbolo de autores como C.G.Jung, P. Ricoeur e G. Durand. Procura mostrar parte do processo criativo Shakespeareano identificando mitos pessoais, imagens recorrentes, assim como arquétipos e padrões arquetípicos presentes nos sonetos. Divide-se em três capítulos. O primeiro, a Introdução, apresenta Shakespeare como poeta e resume algumas abordagens críticas e os problemas decorrentes que foram debatidos até então. Antecipa ainda, a discussão sobre a importância do imaginário do leitor no processo hermenêutico. O segundo capítulo, O imaginário e o imaginário de Shakespeare, divide-se em duas partes. Na primeira, apresento os campos onde literatura, mito, e símbolo relacionam-se entre si, assim como a teoria da metáfora de P. Ricoeur. A segunda parte consiste em dados gerais do imaginário simbólico dos 154 sonetos, cuja base é uma versão moderna da edição de 1609 (conhecida como The Quarto), com a análise de dois sonetos (28,146) que funciona como modelo para as demais, integrantes do terceiro capítulo. Finalmente, o capítulo 3, A hermenêutica das imagens simbólicas dos sonetos de Shakespeare, traz o estudo propriamente dito, e apresenta as imagens recorrentes, arquétipos, padrões arquetípicos e mitos pessoais encontrados nos sonetos. A conclusão reflete a tentativa de mostrar a importância das imagens simbólicas para os Sonetos, assim como apontar formas através das quais os imaginários de autor e leitor misturam-se, gerando significação. / This thesis aims at studying the symbolical imagery of Shakespeare’s Sonnets in the light of modern theories on the imaginary, symbolism, and myth put forward by authors such as C.G. Jung, P. Ricoeur, and G. Durand. It attempts at showing a part of Shakespeare’s creative process by identifying personal myths, recurrent images, as well as archetypes and archetypal patterns inherent in the Sonnets. The work is divided into three chapters. The first chapter presents Shakespeare as a poet and summarizes some critical approaches and consequent problems that have been part of the Sonnets´ critical heritage. It also anticipates the discussion on the importance of the reader’s imaginary in the hermeneutic process. Chapter two is divided in two segments. The first, where I present the grounds on which myth, literature and symbols are related, as well as Ricoeur’s theory of the metaphor; and the second, that consists of general imaginary symbolic data about the 154 sonnets, approached through a modernized version of the 1609 Quarto. In addition, there comes the analysis of sonnets 28 and 146, as models for the others to come in chapter 3. Finally, chapter three The Hermeneutics of Symbolical Imagery in Shakespeare’s Sonnets, displays the study of recurrent images, archetypes, archetypal patterns and personal myths within Shakespeare’s Sonnets. The Conclusion reflects upon the work’s attempt at showing the importance of symbolic images for the study of the sonnets, as well as considers some of the ways through which the imaginary of the writer and that of the reader bind, generating meaning.

Além da análise das duas obras, este estudo apresenta uma comparação direta entre o romance e a peça, utilizando como ponto de partida para a reflexão o modo como cada uma das histórias foram contadas ao leitor, a escolha linguística dos autores, a maneira como a temática sexual foi tratada por Cleland e por Angelis e a construção das duas personagens, tão próximas e tão distantes entre si / Abstract: This paper makes a critical reading of the first erotic book published in English, Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (1748-49), which tells the adventures of a young prostitute, and the theatrical adaptation of feminist author April de Angelis: The Life and Times of Fanny Hill (1996), which chronicles the processes Fanny Hill, an older prostitute, faces in writing a commissioned book.
